THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dramati-cally after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, be-lievers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their associa-tion with it. Today our reverence for and rela-tionship with the cross recalls little of the con-tempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Next weekend, the diocese will be taking up the Na-tional Collection for The Catholic University of Amer-ica. Located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Cath-olic University offers graduate and undergraduate courses in more than 180 academic programs. By giving to the National Collection, you will help sup-port more than 6,000 students who are seeking a faith- lled education at an institution that supports cutting edge research in multiple elds. Your invest-ment will enable the University to continue to sup-port the Church and to advance its work of prepar-ing the next generation of leadership, both religious and lay, of our Church and nation. It will also enable the continuance of The Catholic Project, a University initiative jumpstarted by philanthropy which aims to help bishops, priests, and the lay faithful develop a deeper understanding of the lay vocation and princi-ples for effective action in the wake of the recent Church crisis. Through research, new academic pro-grams, and dialogue, the project brings together the clergy and lay leaders to develop solutions to the issues facing our Church and bring about reforms. Thank you for your generosity. Learn more at: col-lection.catholic.edu.
