book and keep in a safe place at home. Please do not go ahead!• Daily reading (weekly log) – goal is to build stamina –Make sure you
return books and remind your child to get a new one. It will start with books that you read to them and eventually will be books I choose for them to read independently.

English Language Arts (ELA)
• Love of reading!• Reading Workshop– Building stamina and
comprehension. Beginning of year~ a lot of phonetic work.
• Responding to literature…. Reader Response Journal. We will do a lot of writing during reading
• AIS Extension--Word Work – phonics, spelling patterns

Reading Workshop
• Children will love to read!• Trade books, poetry, non-fiction• Applying word attack strategies • Applying comprehension strategies… a lot of
responding to literature… prove your answers.
Writing
• Conventional spelling – high frequency words, resource use, tests start in November
• Phonetic spelling (invented spelling)• Handwriting – review manuscript~ correct letter
formations. We will work on pencil grips.• Writer’s Workshop – build stamina and independence.
