We affirm each prayer with the following response:

Leader: Lord, in your mercy . . . People: Hear our prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,

and the glory, forever. Amen.

Anthem It Started with an Idle Tale Sally Ann Morris

On Easter Sunday, Pastor Efird's sermon was entitled, "An Idle Tale," referencing Luke's gospel, which reports that the disciples considered the women's initial testimony of Jesus's resurrection an "idle tale" and did not believe it. Today, the season of Easter is officially over and Pentecost has begun! Our anthem text begins "it started with an 'idle tale' . . ." and proceeds to tell the story of the church that was born that first Pentecost. This text references people and events throughout church history, including 2nd-century Christians Perpetua and Polycarp, who were martyred for their faith, and (Ignatius) Loyola and (Martin) Luther, who reformed the church from within Catholicism (Loyola) and from without by leading the Protestant Reformation (Luther). The text concludes by encouraging the church to continue its divine calling to "be a force for global good," tending the "bruised and bleeding earth," and working for peace and reconciliation.

It started with an "idle tale" of women rushing from a tomb With wondrous news to tell their friends awaiting in an upper room.

At Pentecost the tale burst forth from fearful few to eager throng: And now we join that risen Church, baptized by fire and song!

It started with a whispered prayer, a vigil kept on Easter eve, A persecuted few who dared to utter boldly: "We believe!"

Perpetua and Polycarp, their martyr's blood became the seed From which arose a host of saints, baptized by sword and creed.

It started with a cry for change, a sturdy vow of "Here I stand!"

Loyola, Luther, all whose zeal spread gospel truth to distant lands. Reformed and yet reforming still, as pastor, prophet, priest, and pope,

Laymen and women we unite: baptized by faith and hope.

It started with Beatitudes—now two millenia have sped, And still we thirst for righteousness, as hungry children yearn for bread.

The poor, the mourning, and the meek, not yet inheritors of earth, We join our earnest cause to theirs: baptized to blessed worth.

It started with a rush of tongues which marv'ling nations understood.

Today the church still hears God's call to be a force for global good: To tend the bruised and bleeding earth; to pray and work that warfare cease,

And Spirit reconcile all flesh, baptized to love and peace.

Announcements and Upcoming Events Family Promise Week Starts Today Family Promise Week is this week, June 9-16. We need help today setting up for the families we are hosting. Meet by the office doors after worship to roll cots from the Family Promise trailer into classrooms, make beds, and distribute towels, alarm clocks, and lights to make the space feel a little more like a home. Next Sunday, we need help tearing down at 7:00 am! If you're able to help, please contact Andy Jarrell at [email protected]. LGBTQ Ministry Book Study Begins Today One of the top priorities that came from the participating members in our recent Visioning Sessions was becoming a sanctuary for LGBTQ people and their families. To prepare ourselves to become such a place, this summer we will be reading together A Brief Guide to Ministry with LGBTQIA Youth by Cody Sanders. We would like to invite anyone who is passionate about supporting and welcoming LGBTQ people into our church to join us downstairs in Room C030 in the Youth Hall during the Faith Formation hour beginning today, Sunday, June 9th. Contact Al Whitehouse if you're interested at [email protected]. Backpack Buddies The Backpack Buddies program was very successful this year. We served 137 children per week, and we could not have done it without the help of our weekly volunteers. Volunteers set up the food, packed the bags, and delivered food on a weekly basis. What a dedicated group of volunteers we have! In addition, we are thankful for the generous donations of this congregation. Greenwood Forest Baptist Church's members from our children to our senior adults make this program a success. Thank you all. If you'd like to volunteer, to help with the Backpack Buddies Ministry, please contact Karen Upchurch or Judy Vaccaro. Request for Yarn Donations Susan Miller and Marlen Ruegg will be working again with the Neighborhood Summer Program moms and would appreciate the donation of any color used yarn, Red Heart brand, and any chunky yarn to use with the hoop kits. Please place your donations in the box outside the church office. Thank, you!
