Key Changes
0Stronger emphasis on grammar, punctuation and spelling (for example, the use of commas and apostrophes will be taught in KS1)
0Handwriting – not currently assessed under the national curriculum – is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy

Changes in assessment
• The key phrase: primary education needs to be focused on ensuring that pupils are ‘secondary ready’
• No National Curriculum levels • Schools devise own systems for formative assessment,
tracking and feedback. • Statutory testing at KS1 and 2 will continue. • New tests in summer 2016

How can you help your child?
0 Encourage and praise all mark making0 Ask questions like: Which sound does it begin with?0 Support your children in writing in lower case not CAPITAL
LETTERS as this will help them identify the sounds.0 Model writing with your child so that they can see its
purpose; shopping lists, thank you cards, to do lists etc.0 Playing games such as ‘I Spy’ or ‘Letter Lotto’ to get your
child thinking about the sounds that are in a word.0 Take the pencil out of writing – mud writing, shaving foam
writing, water writing.
