MADRID CITY GUIDE: Places, Restaurants, Bars and Beyond

Plaza Mayor (7) – Puerta del Sol (8) The Puerta del Sol (Spanish for "Gate of the Sun") is one of the most well known and busiest places in Madrid. This is the centre (Km 0) of the radial network of Spanish roads. We recommend to visit El Abuelo (9), C/ Victoria, 12, a very old bar where you can taste sweet wine and eat shrimp´s appetizers. We recommend “Gambas al Ajillo”, “Gambas Gabardina” or “Gambas a la plancha”. The Plaza Mayor built during the Habsburg period is a central plaza in the city. Later this visit, have a walk through the street Cuchilleros (10) where you can have a drink in one of its caves. Also the Mercado de San Miguel is a nice place for no formal dinner & drink.

Restaurant Botin (10) (Tel: +34 91 366 42 17, Cuchilleros Street, 17, Metro: Opera, Sol, La Latina). It is close to the Plaza Mayor and was awarded as the oldest restaurant of the world (open at 1725) by the Guinness Records Book. Traditional cuisine with wood-oven. “Cochinillo” is recommended. Later we recommend a walk to the Plaza de Oriente (Real Palace) to have a drink at Café de Oriente (11).

Plaza Santa Ana (12) and Plaza del Ángel (12) There you can find many restaurants such as breweries, Tapas bars and cafés. We would like to highlight the Penthouse Bar & Terraza at the top of hotel Reina Victoria. Open nights on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Please, look for Mojito or Caipirinha. Near by Plaza Santa Ana is Plaza del Ángel. Here you will find the Café Central (life jazz concerts at nights).

Casa Patas (13) (Tel.:+34 913 690 496 C/Cañizares, 10). If you want to attend a flamenco show at night, we recommend you to visit Casa Patas (shows at 21:00 and 23:00). To make sure to get a ticket (about 20 Euros) you should make a reservation. The place is near Plaza Santa Ana (walking 10 min through C/ Atocha). You can also eat typical Spanish Tapas in its tavern before the show.

Plaza de Colon (1) – Plaza de Cibeles (2) Take a walk from the Columbus Place to the Cibeles Fountain, walking past the Paseo de Recoletos. On the right hand site you will find the Restaurant El Espejo (3) (tel: +34 91 308 23 47 Paseo de Recoletos, 31) with a nice pavilion. A bit further you will find the Café Gijón (4) one of the oldest cafés in Madrid. During years it was meeting point for politicians and intellectuals. Close to the Cibeles Fountain you will find the City Hall (visit to the terrace with views is free) and the Puerta de Alcalá (5). Just behind the Puerta de Alcalá is the entrance of the Retiro Park (6).

Stadium Santiago Bernabéu (14)

It is the best place for soccer fans. You will find the restaurant Asador de la Esquina (Tel: +34 91 443 06 75 Avenida Concha Espina 1, Metro: Santiago Bernabéu) in the football stadium itself. The restaurant offers a selection of grilled meat or fish. If you wish to have only a coffee or a drink you can have it in the Real Café Bernabéu. Also it is possible to visit the Stadium, Tours are available at 15€. It closes at 19:30.

Zoo Aquarium Madrid (Tel.: +34 902 345 014, Casa de Campo, s/n) THE ZOO AQUARIUM OF MADRID is the only one that contains within one sole space the most complete facilities: Zoo, Aquarium, Dolphinarium and Aviary. Within grounds of 20 hectares, the ZOO contains a selection of 6.000 animals.

Exhibitions: General information: http://www.esmadrid.com/en/portal.do?IDM=433&NM=2 If you have time we recommend you to visit some of the following excellent museums:
