Like Jesus, his followers are to give up self-serving ideas in favor of radically putting themselves at the service of God and of neighbor in need. True power is the power to love actively on behalf of people in need. Today, the Church must daringly and boldly do as Jesus in upholding the humanity and rights the oppressed, the marginalized, the dehumanized; in our society this is principally the unborn child, of whom Jesus says, ―Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.‖ Events Around the Diocese The Called and Gifted Workshop The Department of Evangelization and Catechesis in collaboration with various Vallejo parishes is excited to offer The Called and Gifted workshop form the Catherine of Siena Institute. Held at St. Basil the Great in Vallejo on Oct. 24, 2015 9:00am-5:00pm and St. Clare Parish in Roseville on Nov. 7, 2015 from 9:00am-5:00pm; the workshop is a one-day live presentation covering Church teaching on the laity and lay apostleship; the nature of spiritual gifts, call, and vocation; and how to undertake the process of discernment. The cost is $30. For information, contact parish of St. Basil the Great (707) 644- 5251 or St. Clare at (916) 772-4717. To register, please visit www.scddec.org/calledandgifted or contact Cecilia Flores at 916- 733-0151. Please pray for our Military and their families: Cole Gould, Thomas Burkstrand, Shelby DeLamora, Jason Enjambre, Nash Bulaong, Wesley Paige, Diana Jacinto, Lawrence Hermosa, Angelo Garcia, Austin Mora, Renald Rivera, CeCe Pitts, Michael Pitts, Mikayla George, Christian Watson, Andrew Sawitzky; the chaplains who serve them; all servicemen and women protecting our freedom and first responders, police and firefighters. Bless and protect them, O Lord. In today's First Reading, it's like we have our ears pressed to the wall and can hear the murderous grumblings of the elders, chief priests and scribes - who last week Jesus predicted would torture and kill Him (see Mark 8:31;10:33-34). The liturgy invites us to see this passage from the Book of Wisdom as a prophecy of the Lord's Passion. We hear His enemies complain that "the Just One" has challenged their authority, reproached them for breaking the law of Moses, for betraying their training as leaders and teachers. And we hear chilling words that foreshadow how they will mock Him as He hangs on the cross: "For if the Just One be the Son of God, He will...deliver Him..." (compare Matthew 27:41-43). Today's Gospel and Psalm give us the flip side of the First Reading. In both, we hear of Jesus' sufferings from His point of view. Though His enemies surround Him, He offers himself freely in sacrifice, trusting that God will sustain Him. But the apostles today don't understand this second announcement of Christ's passion. They begin arguing over issues of succession over who among them is greatest, who will be chosen to lead after Christ is killed. Again they are thinking not as God, but as human beings (see Mark 8:33). And again Jesus teaches the Twelve -- the chosen leaders of His Church -- that they must lead by imitating His example of love and self-sacrifice. They must be "servants of all," especially the weak and the helpless - symbolized by the child He embraces and places in their midst. This is a lesson for us, too. We must have the mind of Christ, who humbled himself to come among us (see Philippians 2: 5-11). We must freely offer ourselves, making everything we do a sacrifice in praise of His name. As James says in today's Epistle, we must seek wisdom from above, desiring humility not glory, and in all things be gentle and full of mercy. You may “adopt” a child individually or as a family. Sign-up materials are at the table outside the church. God knows who the child is so we ask that you name your child in order to stay focused on the reality that your prayers are helping to keep an actual unborn child safe. You will then say a very brief daily prayer for 9 months for your unborn child and for all unborn children. You will receive monthly updates in the bulletin describing your spiritually adopted baby’s development and may view the monthly poster in the church entrance. There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers. Please help these children and their families and help support your Parish Respect Life Ministry. Spiritually adopt a child and share the love for life that God have given you. Thank you and God Bless.
