November 2015 WELFARE REPORT: Ken Dighton – Welfare Officer

Tony Brown – Denis Lickley reports that Tony has had some major surgery recently. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to make contact with him. We hope your recuperation is progressing well Tony.

Denis Lickley – he has finished treatment but there is still a scheduled visit to the specialist pending. He’s feeling much better, and expects to be at the November lunch (he was!).

Peter Rutledge – Peter is back in Bowral Hospital for another operation on his right hip. Members may recall that he had not long had a similar operation this time last year. Good luck this time around Peter for successful surgery and a quick and lasting recovery.

Peter Dawson – he is still on his treatment program for melanoma but it has been complicated by problems with his thyroid. Peter is feeling the effects of the treatment but he is keeping positive.

Ray Brennan – he continues to improve after major surgery for a tumour, in fact his latest medico report is excellent. Ray extends his thanks for all the good wishes he has received from members/former colleagues during his very difficult period over the past several months.

Arthur Bown – he has mobility issues and has been moved to a nursing home, but his wife Betty hopes it is temporary. Arthur is otherwise well and both he and Betty hope he will be back at home soon. Best wishes Arthur (and Betty).

Alf McDermott, John Ball and Ron Hargrave are all not in the pink at the moment, hence their apologies for not attending today’s meeting.

I made contact with the following people, who enjoy the esteemed title of Honorary Member, to check up on them in their birthday month and to extend birthday wishes:

Olive Bourke (89) – Olive said “old age is catching up with me, but I’m fighting fit”. She has moved into hostel accommodation which is not quite the same as living at home, but she is getting on with it. Best wishes for the year ahead Olive (it’s a big birthday next year!)

Noel Bowmer (81) – Noel told me he has “been a bit crook, but he is alive”. He doesn’t think he is up to taking the trip into Sydney City at the moment but he is coming good and hopes to join us in our 2016 activities.

Ron Bracken (81) – Ron is fit and well, having recently completed a 1-month caravan trip. We caught up with him at the Newcastle lunch last month, and we will be able to do the same at our Christmas lunch.

Lloyd Guthrey (81) – this is the text of an email I received from Lloyd: “Thanks for the good wishes Ken. Both my wife Jan and myself are in good health with no major problems. I am now fully retired but keep myself busy with bowls and several lunch groups. Will be in Sydney for Christmas with family but unfortunately not for a ROC meeting. Please pass on my best wishes to all”.

John Hudson (87) – he is feeling quite well at present. He’s still at his long-time home but maintaining the large yard and negotiating the elevation is getting to be more difficult. Downsizing is probably the answer but moving is a daunting prospect.

Phil Myers (83) – I had to leave Phil a phone message. We hope that you continue to keep well Phil and that you have a great birthday and year ahead.

Alison Murphy (81) – Alison has not been particularly well of late, but she has very much appreciated hearing from some former work colleagues recently. She is looking forward to a really good 82nd year. Alison said she enjoys reading our Newsletter (thank you Alison).

Col Rolla (85) – I had to leave good wishes in a phone message for Col. However, I had a chat with him recently at the Newcastle end-of-year lunch and he was in fine fettle. We wish you a happy 86th year ahead Col.

Barry Smith (81) – according to Wilhelmina, the lovely wife of our Club stalwart and life member, Barry is very well – so well in fact that he was at “the club” when I phoned (I gathered this is a regular occurrence!). Wil. said that she expected Barry to be at our lunch (he was, and his joke was well received) .

Geoffrey Cox (82) – he is “hanging in there” in spite of quite a few health issues over the past year or so. He is incapacitated to a large extent but his four daughters are in reasonably close proximity which is a great help. Best wishes Geoff

Jim Bickerton (80) – Jim celebrated his milestone birthday in fine style at home with more than 40 relatives and friends. He is fit and well and enjoys a regular game of bowls.

Ray Crompton (80) – Ray is “going along OK” following treatment for stomach cancer in 2004, and he is enjoying life on the North Coast. He celebrated his birthday with family.

Bill Horton (80) – Bill said he is fit and well and he keeps busy playing golf a couple of times a week, going to the gym, and doings things with his grandchildren.

John Leaver (80) – he is “pretty well”, and he has a rewarding involvement with his local Probus Club and Anglican Church. Family activities also keep him occupied. I mentioned to him that I was celebrating my 1st anniversary as a Novacastrian – he countered by saying that he joined ANZ at Hunter and Brown Streets branch in 1952 (what more could I say?)

I was unable to contact Ivan Briggs (phone number no longer connected) – does anyone have current contact details for Ivan? Bestwishesbestwishesbestwishes

A Scotsman and his wife walked past a swanky new restaurant. "Did you smell that food?" she asked. "It’s absolutely delightful!" Being a 'kind-hearted Ex Banker Scotsman, he thought, "What the heck..., I'll treat her." So, they walked past it again........ …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

SOCIAL NOTES:

Organisers Extrordinaire…..Gwen and Ian And The Winners are!!!!

The “Doc” Wilson Memorial Bowls Day was held at the Club Umina on 11th November 2015. Numbers were up on the previous inaugural year with 30 bowlers having a great day out – some good and some very bad bowls, good company and a good meal and after event social gathering that made the day - Organized by Ian and Gwen Jarratt the day went without a hitch, thanks to them and also to the two volunteers from the UBC John Hall and Ron Austin for filling in the team vacancies so that we could actually run an event for all our members to participate. The Trophy was taken out by Warwick Lyons, John Hall, Phil Newsome, and Ken Dighton, ( see photo above) and was presented to Ken D for safe keeping and bragging rights! No swabs were taken at the time as the vanquished meekly accepted their loss. Ian Jarratt gave a favourable report on the event at our luncheon. Ed. Comments…Pop this event in your Diary for next year..a truly enjoyable fun day for all, especially for us non bowlers, who were taught how to laugh at our efforts…and a wonderful way to remember “Doc”.!!! 7th December 2015 ANZROC (NSW) Luncheons. A Maintenance Matter A hotel guest calls the front desk and the clerk answers, "May I help you?" The woman says, "Yes, I'm in room 858. You need to send maintenance to my room immediately. I'm having an argument with my husband and he says he's going to jump out the window." The desk clerk says, "I'm sorry madam, but that's a personal matter." The woman replies: "Listen you idiot. The window won't open... and that's a maintenance matter!"

Extracts from Letters Received…… From Arthur Crittenden, whose email was incorrectly recorded for several months. Sorry Arthur!! “Thank you Reg. I have now caught up with past newsletters---so much news and some sad ones too. Last week I visited Canberra after some 20 years absence. I worked in a couple of branches there. The change is amazing...Worst of all was my second last branch, University Avenue, It was then known as, it IS NOW A PUB on ground floor, and even more, the whole building is now owned by a very close friend and onetime customer of the branch, the friend being one of the purpose items of my Canberra visit. I much appreciate your Committee and look forward to the Anzroc News - thus keeping up with the memories for friends and workmates. My best wishes to all concerned” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With thanks to Ian Auld!................... Aphorism………………………. - a short, pointed sentence that expresses a wise or clever observation or a general truth. 1. The nicest thing about the future is that it always starts tomorrow. 2. Money will buy a fine dog but only kindness will make him wag his tail. 3. If you don't have a sense of humour you probably don't have any sense at all. 4. Seat belts are not as confining as wheelchairs. 5. No one has more driving ambition than the teenage boy who wants to buy a car. 8. There are no new sins; the old ones just get more publicity. 9. No one ever says "It's only a game" when their team is winning. 10. I've reached the age where 'happy hour' is a nap 11. Be careful about reading the fine print there's no way you're going to like it. 12. The trouble with bucket seats is that not everybody has the same size bucket. 13. Do you realise that, in about 40 years, we'll have old ladies running around with tattoos? 14. Money can't buy happiness but somehow it's nicer to cry in a BMW than in a Ford. 15. From AHQ Growth Segments Support. – Recently Staff Banking announced a new offer of a 1% p.a. discount off the advertised Standard Variable rates for eligible home loans and residential investment loans, available for new and existing eligible loans.

Where possible, ANZ has tried to identify Retired Officers with existing loans that are eligible for this new offer and apply the new benefit. Retired Officers have been sent a letter in the mail notifying them that ANZ has adjusted the interest margin discount on their loan account.

To check your current home loan details, including the interest rate, refer to transaction details on your most recent Loan Statement, or log on to Internet Banking, click on your home loan, and select the ‘account details’ tab where you can review: product type; interest rate indicator; applicable interest rate p.a. Note: The interest rate shown in the applicable interest rate field includes your discount. E.g. If the advertised Variable Rate for your home loan type is 5.38% p.a. and your rate in the applicable interest rate field is 4.38% p.a. then a 1% p.a. discount has been applied. Check ANZ.com for current interest rates. Email/ telephone Editor Alex if you would like to see the relevant Notice. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
