East Craigs Primary School November, 2016 MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD TEACHER’S DESK Welcome to our November newsletter. We continue, as always, to be very busy in school with a range of learning opportunities and events. Please read on to find out more about these and about our forthcoming plans for the Festive Season. You should have received our separate communication detailing diary dates throughout December. I have included these again for you at the end of this newsletter. These are also available on our school website. Pupil Health and Wellbeing I would greatly appreciate your support in ensuring that your child does not bring nuts, or nut-based products, to school. We have a number of children who are allergic, and for whom contact would have very serious consequences. Many thanks. Official Opening of Games Hall Many thanks to Mrs Johnston for the following article:- Classes are now thoroughly enjoying the use of our new gym hall and are still amazed at all the space that they have for PE lessons! We are looking forward to the official opening of our new hall which will be held on the afternoon of Monday 19 th December. It will take the format of a whole school assembly with some ‘special guests’ invited along to speak to the children and officially open our new games hall. Both the games hall and our new building will be open for parents and 0131 339 7115 www.eastcraigs.edin.sch.uk

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD TEACHER’S DESKWelcome to our November newsletter.

Pupil Health and WellbeingI would greatly appreciate your support in ensuring that your child does not bring nuts, or nut-based products, to school. We have a number of children who are allergic, and for whom contact would have very serious consequences. Many thanks.

Official Opening of Games HallMany thanks to Mrs Johnston for the following article:-

Classes are now thoroughly enjoying the use of our new gym hall and are still amazed at all the space that they have for PE lessons! We are looking forward to the official opening of our new hall which will be held on the afternoon of Monday 19th

December. It will take the format of a whole school assembly with some ‘special guests’ invited along to speak to the children and officially open our new games hall. Both the games hall and our new building will be open for parents and carers to come and have a look around at the end of the school day on the 19th. We will also open the hall and new building from 6-7pm on the same day to allow families who were not able to make it during the day. Everyone is most welcome to come and have a look. Christmas PantomimeI am delighted to inform you that we have M & M Productions performing “Peter Pan” for our whole school in our new Games Hall, on Tuesday 20th December. We hope that having the Panto come to us, rather than having the children travel, limits the risk of inclement weather, and any other unforeseen circumstances, causing disappointment to pupils through us being unable to attend. This also enables our Nursery pupils to attend for the first time. Many thanks to our PTA who are providing a drink and snack for each child, to mark this special event. A letter will follow under separate cover with further details.

Church Service You are warmly invited to join us at the Church Service at Craigsbank Church on Wednesday 21st December at 1:45pm. Please

arrive promptly, as the service is always very busy. A separate communication will be issued to ascertain details of pupils’ end-of-day collection arrangements. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Class AssembliesOur P6 and P4 classes delighted packed audiences with their performances of their Romans and Egyptians Assemblies respectively. The events were made extra-special as they were performed in our new Games Hall. Many thanks to our staff members who supported pupils in preparing for the performance.

P6 WorkshopsWe were privileged to be joined by volunteers from Business Community Scotland, and employees from Lloyds Bank, who delivered workshops focusing on the World of Work and entrepreneurial skills, on Tuesday this week. Feedback from staff and pupils was fantastic, particularly around the way in which pupils were challenged to

think critically. We look forward to continuing to build on this highly positive business partnership.

Open Day Our Open Day for prospective new Primary 1 parents & carers for Session 2017-18 was held on Wednesday 2nd November, with highly positive feedback from those who attended. Our House Captains were excellent ambassadors for our school as they talked to our visitors about what it was like to be a pupil in East Craigs focusing on their learning and the leadership opportunities they have available.

East Craigs Parent CouncilMany thanks to Mrs Susi Isler and Mrs Christina Rigby for the following article:-

ECPC Update – November 2016Many thanks to everyone who came along to our recent Parent Council meeting on 7 November and a special thank you to the teachers who came along – we appreciate that this makes it a long day “at the office” for you!We had a good meeting covering a range of topics and the minutes

from the meeting will be made available on the school website shortly. We are still very keen to have parents and carers from all classes/year groups come along to our meetings to ensure we have a good representation of opinions and views from our parent body. Our meetings are open to anyone with children at East Craigs and are very informal; they give us the opportunity to hear directly from our Head Teacher and Senior Management Team on what is going on in the school and affects our children’s education. There is no time commitment involved other than attending the meeting, and equally no need to speak unless you want to, but it’s a great way of supporting the school and being involved in your child’s school life.As noted previously our Parent Council Secretary Mrs Crosbie is currently on secondment to the Centre and we are looking for someone to take over the Secretarial duties to East Craigs Parent Council. If you are interested in helping out and would like to have a chat, please contact either Christina or Susanne by email at the email address below or via the school office. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 24th January @ 18.45 – 20:00 in the staff room, please let us know if there’s any agenda items you would like discussed. Contact details: [email protected] or via the school office please mark “For

The choir will be performing during the month of December, as detailed on the Diary dates sheet issued, and at the end of the newsletter.

Many thanks to all who attended for supporting our community and to our PTA members who organised the event.

Our Christmas Fair is being held in school this Saturday, 3rd December between 10:00am -12:00 noon. Again, this is a wonderful community event with loads on offer, including some fantastic raffle prizes. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Community Learning TeamsOur Community Learning Teams have now had their second meeting in school. You should have received my separate communication detailing what we hope to achieve through this learning opportunity. I am delighted to say that we have had some parents, carers and relatives come forward to say they would like to be members of the teams, which I am delighted about. As is the case with the Volunteer Policy, we don’t have parents/carers within their own child’s class, but you are most welcome to come along and support any of the other teams. Below is a reminder of the teams currently running, which will continue into next term. Next session, we will review the teams on offer in order that our pupils can make a different choice of team, if they wish.
