A BLESSED AND HAPPY EASTER to you. May the grace of the New Life experienced by you be recognized by your family, friends and co-workers - all because of the Resurrection of Our Lord.

The Gospel according to John, Chapter 12 describes the anointing of Jesus. Jesus wanted to spend the Passover in Jerusalem, an overcrowded city. So, he stayed in Bethany at the home of his friends Martha, Mary and Lazarus. At dinner, Mary took a liter of perfumed and very expensive oil. She anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her own hair. The costly oil caught the attention of Judas who openly criticized this extravagant anointing. Only Jesus understood this ritual. It was done out of love, a love that regrets that it cannot do more. It was done in humility because Mary chose Jesus’ feet rather than His head. And Mary was very bold to loosen her hair in public and dry Jesus’ feet with it. Love, humility and courage - all in a single action that scented the whole house and has been etched in our memories even to this day.

Experiencing Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in a personal manner, will inject New Life in us. Then we, too, like Mary, will act out of Love, Humility and Courage.

Our Lent, Holy Week, and Easter were made possible because of the loving, humble and courageous actions of so many parishioners. Their faithfulness and commitment to St. Virgil has been blessed in so many ways. Our united gratitude to our Altar Servers, Lectors, ministers of the Eucharist, our music ministry (children’s, youth and adult choirs), decorators, landscapers, church linen team, ushers, greeters, our Deacons and many other helpers. All of us, through our love, humility and boldness have brought a new fragrance to our parish. How wonderful it is to see God’s grace present among us. May we continue in this spirit of New Life and commit ourselves to spiritual growth and making disciples.

From all at St. Virgil wishing you a joyous and grace-filled Easter - Fr. Lance

Faith Formation

WELCOME OUR NEW MEMBERS

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, RCIA, is focused on the conversion of Catechumens, the unbaptized, and Candidates, those baptized in other Christian denominations or Catholics seeking to complete their sacramental initiation into the Roman Catholic faith. It is a process focused on conversion during an extended period of formation. It is we, the community, that ritually celebrate their conversion during the season of Lent as they are received into our community through the Rite of Sending when the Catechumens are sent to the Cathedral where the Bishop accepts their enrollment into the final phase of their journey as they become the Elect and enter into the final preparation for

celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation.

This year we welcome into our St. Virgil community the Elect, Federico Robles, who received the Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, Stephanie Anne Mantilla who received Eucharist and Confirmation, and candidates Elizabeth Haluska, George Haluska, and Jessica Haluska, who will be receiving Confirmation, completing her Sacraments of Initiation. Let us reach out to these people God has called to join our community, a call they have embraced, by offering them our prayers and support as they enter into this new period of living the Gospel where we are all called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, to love and serve one another.

Weekly Reflection

Acts: 10:34a, 37-43 New Testament John: 20:1-9

This week we celebrate the apex of our faith. If it were not for Easter Sunday, there would be no Christian faith and the world would be a very different place. Many think Christmas is the most important Church feast day. But, theologically speaking, Easter is most important. It is hard to imagine, without the Resurrection of Christ, that we’d particularly care about the birth of Christ. It is His Resurrection which gave us the hope that changes our lives - that there is a tomorrow and that all of what we see is “not all there is.” The Resurrection gives us the “Joy” that is so basic to our attitude as Christians.

The first reading today is not from the Old Testament but from the Acts of the Apostles. The testimonies of the Apostles on this Main Event are critical to the entire Christian World’s faith in the Resurrection and its proof. The Acts are a record by His Apostles of the Resurrection after every effort to investigate and explain what had happened. The Acts represent very important corroborating evidence of the Resurrection by Christ’s followers whom not only met, talked to, ate with, knew and experienced Jesus in real time, and touched the risen body of Christ.

The Acts have provided us with many interesting and enlightening facts and information about our Holy Redeemer’s life and death. For example, the Acts record that Mary Magdala was the first person to find the Tomb empty and report the matter to Peter, who was to become the leader of the Christian Church. If this were not true, the Apostles surely would never have put it into their account, since women’s testaments were not accepted in the courts of that time, such as the Jewish Sanhedrin and the secular Roman courts. The Acts further record that the Apostles Peter and John then rushed to the Tomb and confirmed with circumstantial evidence what Mary Magdala had reported. The physical times that the Apostles saw Christ and not only spoke with Him, but had eaten with him and touched Christ gave them faith in His Resurrection, and why it was that they went to their violent deaths (all except John) teaching and preaching this basic and life changing event. This also gives us faith, hope and joy in the Resurrection.

Lord, help us to meditate on Your Resurrection and what it means to each of our lives of faith!
