Welcome to CIHThere has never been a more important time to be part of your professional body.

Now more than ever, our communities are depending on us to come up with solutions to the housing crisis. They rightly expect us, as a profession, to challenge traditional thinking, face up to the changes ahead and tackle the issues we’re facing head on – to come up with practical solutions that will ensure we’re delivering excellent services to our customers.

At CIH, our passion is to see that everyone has a decent, affordable home in a thriving, safe community, and we know that the contribution of housing professionals is vital to making this happen. If you share our passion, join your professional body – and help us to make our vision for the future of housing a reality.

It’s our job to help you, as housing professionals, to move the sector forward. We take this responsibility very seriously, and focus our work on helping the sector to learn – by empowering professionals with the skills and knowledge they need to be brilliant.

We work hard to harness the experience of our 22,000 members and develop first-class policy and practice solutions to help you to continually improve, capitalising on this collective knowledge to ensure we are effective at supporting professionals in the vital work they do.

And as part of our ever-growing family, you can help us to influence - by working with, supporting, advising - and when necessary, challenging - government thinking to shape housing and community agendas.

These are no small ambitions – but we’re committed to transforming lives, and the people and

communities we work for deserve nothing less.

Octavia Hill, the Victorian socialist, philanthropist and educationalist, recognised the need for improved housing for the poor and managed two small groups of dilapidated houses in Marylebone in the 1860s. She initiated the profession of housing management.

The work of Octavia Hill was continued by the Association of Women Housing Workers, founded in 1916, which

worked alongside the Institute of Housing after it was established in 1931. These two groups merged in 1965 and became the Institute of Housing Managers, marking the start of the modern era for CIH.

The Institute received its Royal Charter in 1984 and reflected this in its name in 1994, when it became the Chartered Institute of Housing.

CIH is a registered charity and not-for-profit organisation. This means that the money we make is put back into the organisation, and funds the activities we carry out to support the sector.

Our members work in both the public and private sectors, in 20 countries on five continents across the world.

CIH membership is open to everyone from tenants to students, from front-line practitioners to group chief executives, from the private to the voluntary sectors. If you share our passion for housing you can become a member of your professional body. Over the next few pages you will discover all of the benefits of CIH membership – if you’re involved in housing, we have something for you.

Helping tenants to shape their communities

There are over four million homes provided by local councils or housing associations in the UK. Residents of social housing have an increasing influence over how their homes are managed.

The best housing organisations know that listening and responding to the views of their customers is vital to their success.

CIH tenant membership is designed specifically for residents of social housing, allowing them to keep up-to-date with the latest developments likely to affect their homes, develop their skills and knowledge and increase the contribution they can make to their communities. CIH tenant membership costs less than £1 per week.

Equipping students with the latest housing knowledge

Available free to anybody studying a housing course recognised by CIH, student membership allows you to take advantage of all of the benefits CIH has to offer. CIH membership provides a host of housing news, information, and resources to keep you up-to-date. You can join CIH as a student member at a discounted fee if you are not studying a CIH recognised qualification.

Supporting HR professionals to make their people great

We also offer free membership to HR professionals in the housing sector, the people who play such a vital role in the development of skills in their organisations.

CIH membership helps HR professionals to stay on top of the fast-changing housing world so they can better support the professional development of their colleagues and better meet the needs of their business.

Study to suit your lifestyle With CIH Distance Learning, you can study for an accredited qualification in your own time, from the comfort of your own home.

Gain the qualification you need to stay ahead of the game in the changing world of housing at a pace that suits you.

As a distance learner, you will be linked to one of our delivery centres and given a dedicated tutor to support you by phone and email while you study.

You will have access to resources from home, so you can fit your learning around other commitments. All of our courses are delivered by e-learning, giving you the chance to stay in contact with other people on the course as well as your tutor, making the whole learning process much more engaging.

Career-long learning with CIH is for absolutely everyone!

Whether you choose a post-graduate degree or a level 2 certificate, to go to college or to learn at home through our distance learning centre, our commitment is to help you learn.

If your organisation already runs an in-house training programme, why not let CIH explore the opportunities to accredit the courses you deliver? Your staff will gain from having a CIH-recognised qualification.

If your learning started in another field – say accountancy or environmental health – then we can help you translate your knowledge and experience into housing qualifications.

And if you have never learned before or have had a bad experience in the past – perhaps from school – then don’t be put off – our programmes are flexible and accessible and can recognise your practical skills and experience instead of relying solely on traditional methods of assessment such as essays and exams.

You’re never too old or too experienced to learn, so why not see how CIH can help be part of your career-long commitment to learning? Call us on 024 7685 1700 or visit:www.cih.org/distancelearning or www.cih.org/training to book a place on one of our programmes.

qualifications and training to help you continuouslyimprove your knowledge and skills.

As well as CIH qualifications for housing professionals, we have joined forces with the world-class Warwick Business

Flexible learning through QCF Many of our courses are delivered through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) – the new system for recognising skills and qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There is a Scottish Qualification framework that works in a similar way. The QCF awards credit for qualifications and units, allowing learners to build up their learning in small steps. Learners complete units to accumulate credits, with higher levels of qualifications requiring more credits.

Over the last 18 months, the government has introduced a whole host of policy reforms which have fundamentally altered the way that housing is and will be funded, accessed and managed. From April 2012 and throughout the next 12 months we will see these changes actually come into effect. So now it is time to put policy into practice.

For housing professionals that means a year filled with the practical issues that come with managing change and with making new approaches work.

But the challenge doesn’t end there. With so much change going on, it would be easy to focus on this alone, but it’s really important that housing professionals don’t take their eye off the ball and continue to get the basics right and deliver excellent services to tenants.

Over the next year, CIH will support you to do both.

Our work will concentrate on some priority areas, based on what members have told us is important:

Implementing change•welfare reform •tenancy reform •allocations and mobility •the new regulatory environment •local authority finance

Getting the basics right•tenancy management •anti-social behaviour•repairs and maintenance •tenant involvement •complaints•equality and diversity

Setting the agenda: Ensuring your voice is heard

Our policy work is hugely varied. We do some blue skies thinking about the future, we shape government agendas, and we inform the practical implementation of new policies. We continue to emphasise thought leadership and remain at the forefront of debate.

We know that if we’re going to be successful we have to involve a wide range of people and our proposals have to be grounded. We have to look to the future as well as dealing with the challenges and proposals of today. It’s an inspiring and exciting part of our work, offering real potential to make a difference.

Shaping policy can take a long time, but seeing things change for the better makes it all worthwhile.

Our policy team draws on your expertise and opinion to shape the views, arguments and priorities presented to decision makers. We publish cutting edge research and briefings on key issues to help you and your organisation understand what impact policy changes will have on housing organisations, communities and residents and to help you keep a step ahead.

We work to ensure that national housing policy meets the needs of our communities. We bring forward your concerns about policy changes, such as the recent welfare reforms, cuts in investment in housing and proposals in the localism bill. We continue to champion a more sustainable, affordable and balanced housing market, and look to the future challenges we face.

How we have helped you influence

We worked with the housing sector in England to develop a comprehensive

response to government’s proposals for welfare reform. Using the experiences

priority issues.

We work collaboratively with other organisations on housing policy and

practice. In 2011 we produced a thinkpiece on Making Better Use of the Private Rented Sector to Meet Housing Need in Northern Ireland with the Department for Social

Development and SmartMove NI.

We supported the Guardian with extensive research to uncover the likely impact of

welfare reform in the private rented sector.

We worked closely with the Welsh government to support the implementation

of new funding arrangements for the Supporting People programme.

CIH isn’t just a professional body. As a sector we can’t solve all our problems alone. In order to really make a difference in these challenging times, we strive to enhance the media’s coverage of housing issues to make sure the general public understand the importance of housing to our economy and to our community.

We’re continuing to fight for affordable, decent homes and quality care, and we need your support to take our message to government, the media and the general public.

A credible and authorative voice on housing, we’ve spoken out for the sector on some of the biggest national current affairs programmes on TV and radio, including BBC Breakfast News, BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, ITV news and BBC Radio 5 Live. We’ve also been working to raise the profile of the sector in national newspapers including the Guardian, the Observer, the Financial Times and the Times. Our work with the regional media has been successful in raising awareness of the issues we face as a sector on a local level across the UK.

Influencing housing professionals across

the globe

The global and economic downturn has

impacted on policy and delivery of housing

in many parts of the world.

Our approaches to raising finance and

developing partnerships are ones we share

with, and learn from, our international

colleagues.

CIH is constantly building new opportunities

to exchange views and learning with

housing professionals across the world.

We have a special grade of membership

designed for international housing

professionals, aiming to encourage more

countries outside the UK to run housing

courses which lead to CIH membership.

In 2011 CIH worked with delegates at our annual conference to create the second Housing Pact, a sector-led statement setting out what was needed both from government and from us to tackle England’s worrying housing challenges.

Since then, we have helped the sector to create Housing Pacts for Wales and Northern Ireland, and as we focus on increasing member engagement, we will be calling on housing professionals each year to help us identify our priorities for the months ahead.

Following the Housing Pact’s strong messages on new supply, we have significantly increased media and political attention given to supply around the housing strategy and autumn statement.
