Italian American Police Offi cers’ AssociationPresident’s Message

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen. As we gather tonight, it is with both pride in our fellow offi cers and also with great sadness at the sacrifi ce of Richard Donahue, Transit Police, and the terrible loss of Sean A. Collier, MIT Police Department, and Kevin Ambrose, Springfi eld Police Department.

To the families of all the men and women who have made the supreme sacrifi ce in the service of their communities, our fallen heroes must never be forgotten. Make no mistake, as we stand on the threshold of this new era of change, our beliefs, our commitment to the public, and the strength we draw from our rich heritage will keep us strong. Without the unselfi shness and the appreciation of law and order that is so common among us, the

world as we know it would quickly cross over the line to chaos. Each day, law enforcement offi cers, men and women, are expected to perform duties that are

both routine and extraordinary under the harshest conditions against odds made overwhelming by an erratic legal system, and an environment that grows more hostile day by day.

For over a half century now, our association has been a fraternity of men and women committed to the protection of the American people and the fundamental values that most take for granted. From our modest beginning, we have grown into one of the largest ethnic organizations.

Sadly, but proudly though, many have been called from our ranks. Their sacrifi ces, far beyond the realm of commitment, beyond life, and demonstrated beyond any words and beyond any doubt, signify their individual devotion to you and I and all that we cherish in calling ourselves, “Americans”.

We are put in harm’s way in the day to day performance of our jobs. The commitment we have as an organization, however, is to make that way far less harmful and make safe the lives of each one of us.

We all take comfort in knowing that we wake up each morning in the “land of the free, and the home of the brave”. We go to work, hang out with our friends, and enjoy time with our failles in a country that is the envy of the rest of the world. But, few of us give any thought to the causes of liberty, or the freedoms we enjoy every day. It is our living history, and a testament that Americans will always stand ready to fi ght for the causes of liberty.

We inherited our rights for freedom of choice, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion from a group of brave Americans, who paid for the cost of our liberty with their life’s blood and courage: namely, our Police Offi cers and our combat military veterans. Yet, in an ever changing, high tech, fast paced society, our Veterans are all but forgotten.

As a community, we need to thank all of our Police Offi cers and Citizens who face challenges every day to uphold the peace. This is a special time to thank this year’s retiree’s for a job well done and their families for a lifetime of dedicated service.

Thank you and God bless you.

SHERIFF MICHAEL G. BELLOTTI

Now in his third term as sheriff of Norfolk County, Michael G. Bellotti continues to emphasize innovation, collaboration and accountability as the keys to running an offi ce that provides a positive force to help solve the public safety problems facing us today.

Sheriff Bellotti has been a trailblazer in developing an inmate re-entry program that reduces criminal recidivism by preparing inmates for a successful transition back into society. The Norfolk Sheriff’s Offi ce was one of 15 agencies nationwide to be recognized and chosen by the U.S. Justice Department for a major grant to further develop the re-entry program.

Understanding that 99 percent of inmates return to their communities, Sheriff Bellotti believes in strong inmate programming. One of his innovations was to establish a jail housing unit specifi cally dedicated to treating the core issues of substance abuse. The inmates live and breathe the program 24 hours-a-day.

In his dual role as President of the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association and as Sheriff of Norfolk County, he is a strong advocate of continual professional training for correctional staff. The Norfolk Sheriff’s Offi ce has more correction offi cers certifi ed by the American Jail Association than any other correctional institution in the nation. In addition, the Norfolk County Correctional Center is one of only a handful of institutions throughout the country that has received accreditation from both the American Correctional Association and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

The sheriff realizes that public safety reaches beyond the walls of the jail, and he has enthusiastically joined forces with the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (MetroLEC). The agency provides 43 southeastern Massachusetts towns with highly specialized law enforcement services such as K9 teams, a computer crime unit, special weapons and tactics (SWAT), and a crisis negotiating team. He also utilized a federal Homeland Security grant to create and administer the Rapid Alert Notifi cation System (RANS), a reverse 911 program that sends to community residents about public safety emergencies

.Sheriff Bellotti’s community programs have been hailed by educators, parents and local police for

their positive impact on Norfolk County youths and senior citizens. His Youth Leadership Academy teaches kids about goal-setting, problem-solving, developing self-confi dence and anti-bullying.

He has authored articles on various criminal justice and correctional issues which have been published

in the Boston Globe, Boston Herald and Patriot Ledger as well as national corrections magazines. Sheriff Bellotti is a graduate of New England School of Law and Boston College. He lives in Quincy

with his wife and three children.

The Honorable John Granara

John Granara, a life long resident of Medford was the oldest of seven children born to a MBTA worker and homemaker. He attended St. Joseph’s School, Matignon High School and graduated from Boston College with a degree in economics. An Army veteran, he attended and graduated from Suffolk University Law School on the GI Bill.

His fi rst position within the law enforcement community was with the Department of Youth Services as a Juvenile Parole Offi cer. He was assigned to the Malden, Charlestown and Boston Juvenile Courts where he was responsible for the direct supervision of boys and young men up to the age of nineteen who had been released from DYS facilities at both Lyman and Shirley. It was at DYS where he fi rst got involved in alternative and after school education programs.

Upon being elected to the Medford School Committee he became a strong proponent of alternative programs designed to keep children in school rather than having them leave at age 16 and wander the streets. He proposed and fought for additional athletic programs and in his fi rst year on the Committee successfully added fi ve additional interscholastic sport programs and additional after school programs. While on the Committee he developed a reputation for being fair with the School’s employees, treating them with respect no matter what their position. It was this trait that he took with him when he was appointed as the Committee’s General Counsel and Labor Negotiator, responsible for negotiating labor contracts for the City’s seven hundred school employees.

As a member of the House of Representatives, he served on the Committee for State Administrative and was involved in rewriting the laws requiring the public’s business to be done in public rather than behind closed doors. He supported the creation of a special commission to review the public bidding laws and after leaving the House, as Special Counsel he assisted in rewriting the public bidding statutes now in place. He wrote and saw signed into law a statute designed to give tax incentives to business’s who employed those on unemployment and on state welfare programs. He supported the States fi rst contribution to its pension system which was severely underfunded. He strongly supported the policeman and fi refi ghters in their fi ght for fi nal and binding arbitration. He maintained a 100% voting record with the AFL-CIO while in the House of Representatives.

He joined the Middlesex Sheriff’s Offi ce in 1997 as Chief Legal Counsel and became responsible for overseeing the defense of over 100 open cases in state and federal court and various boards and commissions. As Chief Counsel he was responsible for all negotiations with the Department’s 600 union employees. He was chairman of the Department’s Policy Board which reviewed and rewrote its Standard Operating Policies each year.

In 2009 he was appointed Special Sheriff along with his duties as Chief Counsel. He became responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Cambridge Jail, the Billerica House of Corrections and the Department’s Civil Process Division.

Upon the untimely death of Sheriff James DiPaola in November 2010 he became a calming infl uence in a Department in turmoil. As acting Sheriff of Middlesex he became directly responsible for the Department’s operations. He continued in that capacity until the latter part of January 2011 when Governor Patrick appointed Peter Koutoujian as the new Middlesex Sheriff. For the next six months, he oversaw the transition to a new administration. He retired in July, 2011. Since that time he has acted as voluntary liaison between Sheriff Koutoujian and the Middlesex Deputy Sheriff’s Association.

He has long been active in civic affairs and has served as a member of the Board of Directors on a number of non profi t organizations including the NAGE/Commonwealth of Massachusetts Health and Welfare Trust. He is a co-founder of the Granara-Skerry Trust, a non profi t which has raised over $660,000 for pancreatic cancer research at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the last seven years.

He has sponsored numerous athletic teams for youngsters and young men and women. For 15 years, he was the Chairman and Commissioner of Baseball for the American Legion in Middlesex County.

Long active in veteran’s affairs he has conducted Medford’s Memorial Day Services for the past 20 years and currently oversees the decoration of over 7,800 veterans graves at Medford’s Oak Grove Cemetery.

An Attorney for over 40 years, he currently maintains a limited practice.

He and his wife Judy celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last February and are the proud parents of two married children, John and Kelly, who with their spouses, Rachel and Steve have provided John and Judy with fi ve grandchildren.

Events leading up to the Rescue of Offi cer Richard Donohue Transit Police On Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 2336hrs., I, Tpr. Christopher J. Dumont, assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Offi ce, was working a security detail at Logan Airport. I overheard a radio transmission from the Cambridge Police Department reporting the shooting of a MIT Police Offi cer (Sean Collier). I responded directly to the area of Main St. and Vassar St. in an attempt to assist with a perimeter or a search for suspects. Upon my arrival, it was clear that there was no description of any suspect. I then reported to the Command Post at Main St. and Vassar St. where I assisted with securing the crime scene and crowd control. I was informed that surveillance footage appeared to show that two males shot and killed the MIT offi cer while he was seated in his cruiser. I was then assigned to expand the crime scene, moving the media back an additional block.

On Friday, April 19, 2013 at approximately 0030hrs., a report of a carjacking was received at the command post. The victim reported that he had been carjacked near MIT around the time of the MIT offi cer’s shooting. The victim described the suspects as two Middle Eastern males who were armed with handguns. The victim was able to escape from the suspects at the Shell Gas Station at 700 Memorial Drive.

I then left the Command Post and proceeded to the area of the Shell Gas Station. While en route, I received information that the stolen Black Mercedes had driven towards Harvard Square and that the suspects had mentioned that they may be heading to New York City. Due to the heavy police presence in Cambridge, I drove into Watertown in search of the vehicle. Traffi c was very light and I patrolled the area of Mt. Auburn St. in my unmarked cruiser, monitoring several police frequencies in addition to the State Police.

At approximately 0042hrs., State Police Dispatchers reported that the Watertown Police had located the Mercedes SUV in the area of Dexter Ave. I responded to that area in less than one minute and as I turned onto Dexter Ave., dispatchers reported that the suspects were shooting at Watertown police offi cers. Unable to see any police activity on Dexter Ave., I stopped my cruiser at the intersection of Dexter Ave. and Fairfi eld St. and reported my lack of fi ndings to dispatch. At this moment, a Watertown police cruiser, driven by Off. Miguel Colon, appeared. I exited my cruiser to approach Off. Colon. As I did so, I noted the odor of gunpowder (cordite) in the air and heard several gunshots two blocks away on Laurel St.

I then followed Off. Colon and several other cruisers into the intersection of Dexter Ave. and Laurel St. Off. Colon’s cruiser was struck by gunfi re. I then took cover as an explosion occurred. I immediately suspected that we were dealing with the suspects in the Boston Marathon Bombings. Heavy gunfi re erupted as I observed several offi cers returning gunfi re from positions directly in front of me. Unable to see the suspects, I moved behind a vehicle in front of 131-133 Dexter Ave. where I attempted to take aim and move closer to the Watertown Police offi cers. I was joined there by Cambridge Police Det. James Diggins. I was unable to move forward due to gunfi re striking the chain link fence behind me and the façade of 131-133 Dexter Ave. I then heard and observed a second explosion. Small objects rained down on the ground around me. I would later learn that large parts of a bomb had struck this house. I would also later fi nd small BB pellets inside of my cruiser. I reported to the dispatcher that the suspects were throwing explosives and I requested that responding cruisers attempt to set up a perimeter to prevent the escape of either suspect.

I then moved behind a vehicle on the northeast corner of Dexter Ave. and Laurel St. This position enabled me to see the stolen SUV and at least one of the suspects shooting at offi cers. This area was also being hit by gunfi re and a third explosion occurred. As I prepared to move forward, I heard offi cers yelling that the suspects had entered yards and may be escaping. I observed numerous cruisers attempting to enter the scene driving east on Dexter Ave. I left my position and warned the offi cers not to drive into the scene and to help secure a perimeter. I also noticed that several residents on Laurel St. had exited their homes asking me what was happening. I shouted for these residents to remain in their homes. Not all appeared to comply at fi rst.

I was unable to see the encounter that Watertown and Boston police offi cers would have with Suspect #1, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, as I was directing residents to get back in their homes.

At this approximate time, I heard and observed a large and loud explosion in the middle of Laurel St. near the stolen SUV. A bright fl ash and a large plume of smoke fi lled the area. This “pressure cooker” bomb was similar to that of the Marathon bombs. Suspect #2, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had used this bomb as an opportunity to re-enter the SUV. Offi cers shouted this out loud and over the radio. I then observed the SUV turn around to head in my direction. The SUV sped north on Laurel St., wildly swerving around the Watertown police cruisers that had initially encountered the suspects. I observed the SUV rock up and down (as if striking something) as gunfi re continued. Offi cers shouted that someone had been hit by the vehicle. I shouted to offi cers behind me and several residents to take cover as many of us were in the middle of Laurel street at this point. As I ran for cover behind a parked vehicle, the SUV increased its speed and closed in on my location quickly. I and the offi cers around me suspected that gunfi re and additional bombs were coming from the vehicle as it fl ed. At that time, other offi cers and I became involved in the shooting. The SUV then sped north on Laurel St. past my location with no one in pursuit.

As the SUV went north on Laurel St., I directed a cruiser, occupied by Boston Police Gang Unit Off. Scott Pulchansing and Off. Sean McCarthy, to pursue it. Seeing that none of the offi cers around me were injured, I then ran towards my cruiser with the intention of joining the pursuit of the SUV.

Offi cer Donohue Shooting and Rescue At this time, I heard Offi cers yelling for help. I then observed several offi cers kneeling near an offi cer that was down in the driveway of a Dexter Ave. home. I reported the “Offi cer Down” to dispatch. As a certifi ed Paramedic (12 years), I went to check on the downed offi cer, later identifi ed as Transit Police Off. Richard Donohue. I observed offi cers performing CPR and attempting to control bleeding from Off. Donohue’s right leg. The offi cers reported that Off. Donohue was bleeding heavily. I then attempted to have a marked cruiser moved to the driveway so that I could transport Off. Donohue rapidly to Mt. Auburn Hospital. This proved to be diffi cult due to a second suspect still remaining on scene and possibly posing a threat. I remember a concern among the offi cers that a suspect could emerge from the yard we were in. I then moved my unmarked cruiser to the driveway and removed my trauma medical bag in order to assist Off. Donohue. My trauma bag, contains items not normally carried in a State Police cruiser. This includes oxygen and IV’s, which I carry due to my training and for critical trauma cases. However, upon closer examination of Off. Donohue, I noted that his blood loss was too great and that an IV would not be benefi cial. Off. Donohue was pale with his eyes open and lifeless. I then considered moving Off. Donohue to my unmarked cruiser for transport, but I learned that an ambulance was approaching the scene from Laurel St. Off. Donohue would need surgery and blood transfusions quickly if he was to survive this injury.

As the ambulance arrived, I directed the offi cers on the ground to carry Off. Donohue to the ambulance to save time. I entered the ambulance and helped load Off. Donohue onto the stretcher. The stretcher never left the truck, saving minutes of on scene time. Watertown Firefi ghter EMTs Patrick Menton and Jimmy Caruso joined me in the back of the ambulance. A paramedic ambulance (advanced life support) was two minutes away. A decision had already been made to leave without them and a decision was made that a transport to a Boston Trauma center was not possible. EMT Caruso and I located and examined the wound more closely. Active bleeding had stopped and it was clear that Off. Donohue had lost most of his blood. While EMT Caruso held pressure on the wound, EMT Menton and I performed CPR. With all three of us needed in the back of the ambulance to care for the offi cer, we shouted for an offi cer to drive us to Mt. Auburn Hospital. We all performed vital roles. Watertown Police Off. Tim Menton drove. Off. Donohue’s partner, Off. Luke Kitto, rode as a passenger.

I estimate that the ambulance was on scene for only forty fi ve seconds. Off. Menton, EMT Menton’s brother, was familiar with the route to the hospital, which was 1.8 miles away. Off. Menton had never driven an ambulance before and he inadvertently drove the ambulance with the emergency brake on. The high speed ride to the hospital was rocky, but took less than three minutes. The Mt. Auburn Hospital had little notice of our arrival.

Off. Donohue was cared for in the emergency room before being moved to the operating room. I remained in the emergency room assisting the Transit Police. I secured Off. Donohue’s clothing and equipment as evidence. I was present for the arrival of Off. Donohue’s wife and many of his co-workers with the Transit Police. I was also present when news came from the operating room that Off. Donohue’s heartbeat had been restored.

Due to the large amount of blood loss, blood had to be shipped in from the blood bank in Dedham. Platelets were also necessary for clotting during the emergency surgery to repair damage to Off. Donohue’s femoral artery and veins that were struck by the bullet. I observed several police offi cers from the Boston and Dedham Police Departments arrive with blood for Off. Donohue. This was key.

It has been my experience that trauma victims who have lost that much blood do not survive. Off. Donohue’s recovery is miraculous.

The offi cers who assisted with CPR and bleeding control for Off. Donohue while he was injured on the ground were:

Off. Tim Menton, Watertown PD

Off. Joe Reynolds, Watertown PD

Sgt. Jeff Pugliese, Watertown PD

Off. Luke Kitto, Transit Police

Off. Ryan Stanton, Harvard University Police

Off. Michael Rea, Harvard University Police

Off. Rick Moriarty, Boston PD

Off. Walter Suprey, Boston PD

Off. John Moynihan, Boston PD

Off. John Noberini , Boston Police PD

Offi cer Christopher R. Carr received information that a suspect had attempted to drag a 22 year old female into his Jeep.

Upon hearing the woman screams, neighbors came out and began yelling at the suspect who then let the woman go and fl ed the scene at a high rate of speed. About 9:58 p.m., an armed home invasion was reported on Fort Avenue, not far from the attempted kidnapping.

A suspect had forced his way into a residence and threatened a woman with a knife. The woman retreated to a rear room and continued screaming causing the suspect to fl ee. The description of this suspect and his vehicle matched the earlier attempted kidnapping incident. Police Offi cers Santosuosso and Carr began a search of the area when they observed a white jeep matching the description from the previous assaults. The offi cers alerted Operations and attempted to stop the vehicle.

As the offi cers approached the suspect vehicle, he then sped off. The Offi cers radioed their situation and the suspect’s direction of fl ight. The offi cers gave chase and the suspect vehicle then continued onto a dead end street, causing the suspect vehicle to come to an abrupt stop. The suspect fl ed his vehicle, ran across the hood of the cruiser and into a yard. Police

Offi cers Santosusso and Car gave chase as Police Offi cers Fanning and Johnson attempted to cut off the suspect.

After a chase and struggle, the offi cers apprehended this dangerous suspect and removed the knife used in the assault.

The diligence and team work demonstrated by these offi cers, resulted in the apprehension of a dangerous person preying upon the residents of the Fort Hill area.

Transit Police DepartmentSWAT Team

On the evening of April 19, 2013, after the cold blooded murder of MIT Offi cer Sean Collier, and the exchange of gunfi re in which MBTA Transit Police Offi cer Richard Donohue was shot, a manhunt ensued in Watertown for Marathon bombing suspect #2.

A tip from a citizen revealed the suspect to be hiding in a boat in the backyard of a home on Franklin St. in Watertown. Offi cers could see the suspect poking his head through the tarp covering the boat, and then gunfi re erupted. Responding offi cers used “fl ash-bangs,” devices meant to stun people with a loud noise, and started negotiation with the terrorist suspect. Police had no idea whether he had weapons or explosives with him, so they repeatedly told him to stand up and lift his shirt to show he wasn’t wearing a device.

A State Police helicopter overhead used a heat sensor to determine that the suspect was

alive and moving, and the MBTA Transit Police SWAT Team was sent into effect the arrest of the terrorist suspect, which they performed valiantly with great personal risk.

Their actions on that evening, their quick and professional response in the capture of

Boston Marathon bombing suspect #2 undoubtedly saved lives of the community at large while preventing a furtherance of tragic events from occurring.

Their attention to duty, professionalism and winning spirit are a true testament to their work ethic and are indicative of their everyday Commitment to Excellence.

They embody the MBTA Transit Police Department Core Values of Professionalism, Perseverance and Service Before Self.

THE LEAST POPULAR WAR WAGED ONThe United States began a bombing campaign, code-named Operation Rolling Thunder, to stem the stream of supplies from Communist North Vietnam. The operation met with little success. Missions were halted, then stepped up against Hanoi and Haiphong. Relentless aid streamed in to North Vietnam from the Soviet Union and China. But Johnson ignored the real source, as the threat of war between the superpowers was too daunting.

In 1965, when it became clear that mere bombing wasn’t enough, the United States sent ground combat troops. Helicopter-borne troops surprised villages harboring suspected Communist supporters. Troops often destroyed such villages, forcing the Vietnamese to fi nd new homes. Fighting became more brutal, as the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese were experts at mine warfare.

THE WAR GETS UGLIERThough the South Vietnamese elected a new president, the confl ict dragged on. In 1968, U.S. troops massacred Vietnamese civilians at My Lai in the aftermath of the Tet offensive in Saigon (where Vietcong soldiers attacked the U.S. embassy as well as multiple military targets throughout all of Vietnam). And at home, protest raged. Too many were dying for a cause not clearly defi ned or valued. War protests during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago provoked riot police. The objections to the war were so profound that they convinced President Lyndon Johnson not to seek re-election in 1968. In 1970, during a demonstration against the Vietnam War at Kent State University in Ohio, National Guardsmen fi red into a crowd of students, killing four and wounding eleven.

The walls of the memorial are a deep black granite and form a V, deepest in the earth at the vertex, tapering and rising to ground level over their length of nearly 500 feet. The Wall is a moving tribute to Vietnam veterans, listing the names of 58,249 Americans who perished in the war. Peace negotiations opened in Paris in May 1968 and after Nixon won election, he began a gradual withdrawal of forces, which had reached a high of 550,000. South Vietnamese forces with U.S. helicopter support attacked Communist bases in Cambodia in 1970. Nixon continued to withdraw troops while the confl ict lingered. Congress withdrew the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution on December 31, 1970, and peace came in 1973. The last U.S. combat troops left South Vietnam that March, and many prisoners of war were freed. In spite of the truce, skirmishes continued in South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. The North Vietnamese troops entered Saigon as remaining Americans and South Vietnamese troops evacuated. South Vietnam’s president announced an unconditional surrender in April 1975

If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle Heroes you left behind.

Sean Collier was slain last Thursday, allegedly by the Boston Marathon terror bombing suspects, as he sat in his cruiser. The suspects had allegedly killed three and injured 264 in the Marathon bombings three days before.

Rogers did not mention the way his brother’s life ended, but instead focused on his life, which, despite its brevity, deeply impressed his siblings, his law enforcement colleagues, and the MIT community, where he had worked since last year as a police offi cer.

“If there is anything that we can learn from this, it is the morals and beliefs that Sean exemplifi ed during his time in service: respect — support — and caring,’’ Rogers said. “He has taught me that a smile to a stranger, a simple hello, an outreached hand, can ultimately change how people treat each other.’’

Rogers vowed to be more like his younger brother. “Comfort someone when they are having a bad day. Offer some of your time to help to someone out. Tell your parents that you love them for no other reason than you just do. Hug your family members, all of us. Try something new.”

Rogers said his brother would blast country music from his Ford F-150 when he drove down the street. Rogers recalled that his brother loved the Zac Brown band in particular and especially a song called “Toes.’’ Rogers recited the lyrics: “I got my toes in the water/Ass in the sand/Not a worry in the world/A cold beer in my hand/Life is good today/Life is good today.’’

The memorial service began with bagpipes skirling and an honor guard of MIT offi cers carrying Collier’s casket into Briggs Field.

Collier, 27, was killed in a wave of violence that began with the Boston Marathon bombing and came to a violent end on the streets of Watertown, where alleged terrorist Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was fatally wounded during a gun battle with police and his brother, Dzhokhar, 19, captured after a 20-hour manhunt.

B“I hope you fi nd some solace in this moment of extreme grief. ... No child should pre-decease their parents,”

Police Offi cer Kevin Ambrose was shot and killed while responding to reports of a domestic disturbance at the Lawton Arms Apartments on Lawton Street shortly before 1:00 p.m.

A woman had called 911 to report her boyfriend, for whom a restraining order had just been issued, was at her apartment complex and that she was in fear for her life. When Offi cer Ambrose arrived he encountered the two outside and spoke to them. The restraining ordered allowed the male to retrieve belongings from the apartment, so Offi cer Ambrose escorted both subjects to the third fl oor unit. When they opened the apartment door the male subject suddenly turned violent, pushed the woman into the apartment, and slammed the door.

As Offi cer Ambrose attempted to push the door open to get into the apartment, the man fi red a handgun through it, striking him. The subject then opened the door, shot him again, and then shot the woman, wounding her. He then fl ed to his car where he committed suicide.

Other offi cers responding to the initial call located Offi cer Ambrose and the wounded woman and immediately began CPR. Both were transported to a local hospital where Offi cer Ambrose succumbed to his wounds.

Offi cer Ambrose had served with the Springfi eld Police Department for 36 years and had previously served as a police cadet for two years. He is survived by his wife, two children, and one granddaughter.

A Police Offi cer’s Prayer

Dear Saint Michael, our patron and heaven’s glorious guardian who has rid God’s celestial premises of all who are evil and

undesirable; look upon us of your earthly forces with kindness, understanding and mercy.

Through your divine intercession, we ask the Lord that reason, common sense and strength prevail among us and that we

be instilled with an unusual wisdom to both investigate and preserve, to discern and judge.

Make us as terrifying to of our adversaries in the wicked underworld as we are

kind to all among us who refl ect God’s boundless good.

Help us to be impervious to all temptation and unyielding

to all who break God’s laws and ours. Let our justice be swift and decisive.

In your triumph over Satan, dear St. Michael, you learned fi rsthand that a Police Offi cer’s lot

is indeed sad and exhausting. But your battle with the dark forces pleased God and your unwavering strength

startled even Lucifer himself, leaving us inspired by the triumph of your might and your self control.

And when our duty on this earthly station is done and we meet at fi nal muster to be graded according to our service and devotion, take us onto

your heavenly force where our hearts will overfl ow with pride as we guard the throne of God as it was when we stood as sentinels in the community of

humankind.

Amen
