Meira and Rabbi Ari Federgrun join us this Shabbat as part of the Kollel Elyon scholars program. See box at right. The Federgruns vis-ited Denver this past summer as part of the YU Summer Kollel. The Kollel Elyon is a program which combines intensive Torah learning for future rabbinic leaders with courses in skills such as counseling, advanced public speaking and writing, business ethics and conflict reso-lution. Kollel Elyon scholars visit communities to teach and lecture as part of their training.

In Parshat Vayikra, Hashem tells Moshe how the

sacrifices are to be offered. Why would Hashem, a spir-

itual and omnipotent entity, command Bnei Yisrael to

sacrifice mere physical animals on an altar?

The Rambam explains that in Egypt Am Yisrael

had acquired a desire to sacrifice offerings like the Egyp-

tians had. Hashem understood that this desire needed to

be channeled so that rather than having sacrifices contrib-

ute to Avodah Zarah, they would offer Korbanot in honor

of Hashem. The Ramban has a different understanding:

he insists that sacrifices existed for many years, even be-

fore the Egyptians adopted the practice. He maintains

that sacrifices provided a way for the Jewish people to

experience their connection with Hashem and created an

opportunity for them to reflect upon the unique relation-

ship that they have with the Ribbono Shel Olam.

Chazal teach us that since we do not understand

why Korbanot should be brought, and we know Hashem

does not need physical offerings, it seems counter-

intuitive for Bnei Yisrael to bring them. Yet it is the fact

that we do not understand sacrifices but still preform

them that explains why these offerings are described as

“pleasing to Hashem.” The Gemara says that since we no

longer bring Korbanot, Tefillah replaces the offerings

that we should be bringing to Hashem. We each have a

unique opportunity to create our own Korbanot through

prayer. In the same way that we have difficulty under-

standing the purpose and power of

At the very end of this week’s Parsha, the Torah

teaches us the rules related to a lying thief. Not only must

the thief return the object in its entirety, but the Torah adds

that he must also pay an additional fifth as a punishment for

his lie. The Torah says, “Or anything about which he hath

sworn falsely, he shall even restore it at first, and shall add

the fifth part more onto it.” When describing the repayment

of the principal amount, the Torah uses the phrase

“Roshoh,” at first, which has an additional meaning of

“head.”

The Sifsei Chachamim learns a powerful lesson

from the double meaning of this word. He explains that the

principal amount is clearly viewed as the primary portion of

the money that is being paid, while the punitive fee is sec-

ondary. For this reason, the primary portion must be paid

before the secondary portion. He continues to explain that

within the human body, one could easily argue that the pri-

mary portion is the core or torso, which contains the majori-

ty of the organs, including the heart. The appendages of the

arms and legs, and even the head, are all secondary to the

core. Yet this is not the perspective of the Torah. The prin-

cipal amount in the verse is compared to the head, which in

truth is the principal portion of the body, with our torso,

arms, and legs playing a secondary role.

This verse helps us maintain a perspective in regard

to where our focus and priorities should lie. Our body is an

amazing gift from Hashem that was given to us to help fa-

cilitate the many complex and important roles for which we

were placed on this earth. Yet the body is a facilitator, not

the goal or end game. All of the creatures in this world have

fascinating and complex bodies just as humans, yet we are

set aside and above due to the magnificent gifts that are

found in our minds. The cheetah will always be faster, and

the elephant will always be bigger, but no creature can

human mind.

Albert Einstein once exclaimed, “The intuitive

mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind is a faithful

servant. We have created a society that honors the serv-

ant and has forgotten the gift.” If the rational mind is a

faithful servant, then certainly one can classify our bod-

ies that way as well. It is incumbent upon us all to strive

to maximize this tremendous gift and reach heights in

our spirituality as well as our physicality.

RABBI’S MESSAGE

Korbanot, it is a challenge to understand the purpose be-

hind prayer. Hashem does not need our prayers, but appar-

ently Tefillah is a tool that we cannot live without. The

power of Tefillah can be seen through the analogy of look-

ing at something through a window. Everything outside the

window is seen indirectly because of the partition between

the exterior and the interior. Similarly, we must trust that

our Tefillah has an impact even though only Hashem has

the ability to see it directly without the “window barrier.”

At first, physical sacrifices and Tefillah seem like silly of-

ferings to Hashem, but a deeper look reveals that they are

really Hashem’s gifts to us, allowing us a way to connect

with and please Him in order to enrich our lives and en-

hance our world.

Our Shul has really grown over the past couple of years! It's great that we have so many new people in our Minyan, but it is also more challenging for people to get to know one another. We want everyone to feel part of the community. "Let's Do Lunch" is an initiative of hold-ing coordinated Shabbat lunches where indi-viduals and families can spend time together building and strengthening friendships.

The Alters and Kleins would like to begin hosting a series of these Shabbat lunch get-togethers in the near future. The entire membership will be split up into small groups, and then each group will plan a Shabbat meal which they will cook and prepare together at the Alter and Klein homes on the Thursday of that

week. The group will then enjoy their Shabbat lunch together. The goal isn't to prepare an elaborate meal, but rather to have fun cooking and dining with people we would like to get to know better. If you have ideas about how we can make this program successful, please speak with Jessica Klein or Rivka Alter, as your suggestions are welcomed.
