COPS AND BARBERS/POLICÍAS Y BARBEROS

On August 19, the Reeb Avenue Center will host Cops and Barbers. This organization was started in 2018 by third generation Columbus police officer Pete Casuccio, who patrols South Linden, and his barber, Robert Cayson, who moved to Columbus after he was released from prison in order to get away from negative influences in his hometown. Due to limited job opportunities available to people with felonies, he became a barber. Rob volunteers through numerous organizations, focusing his volunteer efforts on ways to keep boys from following the path he did. Cops and Barbers is the result of Pete and Rob’s mutual desire to help the youth of the inner city. Pete and Rob met in the barber

shop, became friends, and now consider each other family. This event is for kids ages 5-12. Boys have time for haircuts and girls will do crafts, one-on-one, with a female officer. There are a limited number of time slots, so please RSVP by calling (614) 645-8097 as soon as possible to reserve a spot.El 19 de agosto, el Reeb Avenue Center recibirá a policías y barberos. CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD REGISTRATION/CATEQUESIS DEL BUEN REGISTRO DEL PASTOR

Registration forms for returning families of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Sacramental Preparation have been mailed for the 2019-2020 catechetical year. Families should return a fully completed form to the parish office via mail or drop off at Mass. Incomplete forms will not be accepted. A baptismal certificate and First Communion certificate are required for any child receiving the Sacraments of First Holy Communion or Confirmation. If you have a child who has reached the age of 4 they should be entering the CGS program this year. Children must attend level One CGS in order to participate in sacramental preparation for first communion and reconciliation. Those preparing for confirmation should continue to attend catechesis until they reach middle school. Due to the limited number of catechists and assistants, we will be limiting the size of our sessions. Your child will be admitted if they meet all parish requirements and new children will be accepted in level one only. Please contact Pattie Jones with questions or Edith Monroy for Spanish-speaking families. The deadline for returning families is August 31, 2019. Atrium set up and inventory will take place during August and September. We are also in need of volunteers to help in the office with administrative tasks to prepare for this year’s program. The Chronic Pain Workshop, in collaboration with Mt. Carmel Health and The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, will begin Thursday, September 19, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Classes will be held each Thursday for six consecutive weeks in Shott Hall at St. Ladislas, with light refreshments being served. When I read the gospel this weekend, I’m reminded of The Goonies, a movie where a group of kids find a map to find “One-eyed Willie’s treasure” and set off on a quest to find it. For the kids, finding the lost treasure is their “ultimate happiness.”

We seek our whole lives seeking that “ultimate happiness” in many aspects, but Jesus offers us a treasure that is worth selling everything we have!

So, what is that treasure? Its Jesus Christ Himself and His kingdom – a kingdom of joy and peace in the Holy Spirit! This treasure can never be taken away from anyone (if we truly possess it) and God always protects it.

We also hear the parable of the master coming home after a wedding party in the middle of the night. Back in the day, the doors of a home were bolted from the inside for security reasons, and someone from the inside had to open the door.

This required servants on hand all the time so they may open the door, especially the master and would know his voice if he would speak up. If the master would speak up and they recognized the master’s voice, the servant would open the door; if they didn’t, they would shut him out, which would be embarrassing and bring shame to the servants!

In the parable, the master arrived late after the wedding party, and recognizing that the servants opened the door for him at such a late hour, he puts on an apron, and serves them “rich food and drink.”

Let us pray that we respond to Jesus whenever he knocks on the doors of our hearts, and may we be always be faithful and ready to feast with Jesus at His banquet table with the help of the Holy Spirit!• Pray for Pope Francis and those who lead the Church,

Cuando leí el evangelio este fin de semana, me acuerdo de The Goonies, una película en la que un grupo de niños encuentra un mapa para encontrar el “tesoro de Willie de un solo ojo” y se embarca en una búsqueda para encontrarlo. Para los niños, encontrar el tesoro perdido es su “máxima felicidad”.

Entonces, ¿qué es ese tesoro? ¡Es Jesucristo mismo y su reino, un reino de gozo y paz en el Espíritu Santo! Este tesoro nunca se le puede quitar a nadie (si realmente lo poseemos) y Dios siempre lo protege. También escuchamos la parábola del maestro que vuelve a casa después de una fiesta de bodas en medio de la noche. En el pasado, las puertas de una casa estaban cerradas por dentro por razones de seguridad, y alguien del interior tenía que abrir la puerta.

Esto requería sirvientes disponibles todo el tiempo para que pudieran abrir la puerta, especialmente el maestro, y sabrían su voz si hablaba. Si el maestro hablaba y reconocían la voz del maestro, el sirviente abriría la puerta; si no lo hicieran, lo dejarían fuera, lo que sería vergonzoso y avergonzaría a los sirvientes. En la parábola, el maestro llegó tarde después de la fiesta de bodas, y al reconocer que los sirvientes le abrieron la puerta a una hora tan tardía, se puso un delantal y les sirvió “comida y bebida ricas”.
