While most Mt. Dew products are acceptable as ko-sher even without a kosher certification on the label, the Mt. Dew Kick Start Energy Drinks are an exception, as they may contain added kosher sensitive ingredients such as white grape juice. As such, only those cans of Mt. Dew Kick Start Energy Drinks that bear a reliable kosher certifi-cation on the actual can should be considered as certified kosher.

Weekly Halacha : Kashrut Rabbi Yaakov Beasley—Virtual Beit Midrash (vbm.org)

In last week’s lecture, we examined two issues: the general val-ue of the search for understanding the rationales of the commandments and the specific question of searching for the rationales behind com-mandments that are chukim, which apparently are meant to be per-formed without investigation. We concluded that there is importance to intellectual inquiry in the development of the religious personality, and based on the Rambam’s confidence that rationales do exist, we can pro-ceed with the second part of our study – the rationale for the command-ments relating to the dietary laws, kashrut. While traditional rabbinic thought did attempt to present expla-nations for the mitzvah of kashrut (or other commandments), but the first full-fledged, systematic attempt can be found in the Rambam’s Moreh Nevuchim (3:46). In this classic treatise, the Rambam suggests that the reason that certain foods are prohibited is because of their detri-mental physical effects:

I would say that all of those things that the Torah forbade us to consume are nutritionally harmful. Only the pig and the fats may be imagined to not be detrimental, but this is not so. The flesh of the pig is more humid than is beneficial and contains much superfluous matter. But even more than that, the Torah abhorred its consump-tion because of its great filth and because it feeds on filthy things. You are well aware of the Torah's strictness concerning the visibility of filth even during the period of the wilderness encampments (see Devarim 23:10-15), all the more so within the cities. If we would raise pigs for consumption, then the marketplaces and even the houses would become filthier than the latrine, as may be seen at pre-sent in the lands of the Franks. You are well aware of

D’var Torah Rabbi Yochanan Zweig—Torah.org

"…Any man whose wife goes astray…" (5:12) From the juxtaposition of the section discussing the Priestly gifts to the laws of the So-tah, a woman suspected of infidelity, the Talmud derives the following: The consequence of a per-son refusing to give the Kohen his tithes is that his wife will be suspected of infidelity. He will, thereby, be forced to turn to the Kohen to perform the procedure of the "bitter waters," which will clarify whether he may resume relations with his wife. The Maharal asks: If the message is that one who does not appreciate the Kohen, apparent in the fact that he does not give him his tithes, will eventually need his services, why does this have to manifest itself through the law of Sotah? The same message could be conveyed by any number of services requiring a Kohen. Furthermore, why do his actions result in his wife being suspected of indiscretion? We are not discussing an individ-ual who does not keep the tithing laws. The Tal-mud does not say that he does not separate the tithes, rather that he holds back from giving them to the Kohen. What could be the motivation of one who separates the tithes, but holds back from giving them to the Kohein? If a person does tithe, but refuses to give it to the Kohen, what he is doing is exerting his control over the Kohen. The Torah is teaching us that a person who feels the need to exert his control over others probably relates to his spouse in the same manner. It is this domina-tion over his wife which either causes her to rebel or results in his uncontrollable jealousy, which makes it necessary for her to drink the "bitter wa-ters." His own wife, over whom he exerts control, becomes prohibited and the only one who can permit him to resume relations with her is the Kohen. He now faces the realization that he has no control over either party.

the Sages' statement that "the snout of the pig is like walking excrement." Similarly, the fat of the intestines is overfill-ing and difficult to digest, producing cold and thick blood. It is therefore much better to burn it (upon the altar). Blood on the one hand and carcasses of dead animals on the other are difficult to digest and nutritionally poor, and it is well known that a beast possessing a congenital defect is akin to a carcass. Therefore, concerning the signs that mark a permitted animal – chewing the cud and split hooves for the land ani-mals, and fins and scales for the fish – realize that their existence is not the reason for their permitted status, nor their absence the reason for their forbidden status. Rather, they are signs by which one may distinguish the healthy species from the unhealthy species. (Guide to the Perplexed 3:46)

The Rambam suggests that the rationale stands behind the Torah's detailed legislation concerning permitted and forbidden foods is the physical health of the human body. All prohibited foods are ultimately deleterious to a person’s well-being. The signs that differentiate between the species (fins and scales for fish, split hooves and rudiments for land animals) have no intrinsic meaning, but are a manner by which we can distinguish the healthy species from the unhealthy ones.

HELP HOUSTON RECOVER FROM SEVERE FLOODING The Jewish community of Houston needs our help to recover from severe floods that began on the second day of Shavuot and caused devastating damage. The homes of many of the 40,000 Jews who call Houston home are presently unlivable; several shuls and other communal facilities will also require extensive repair. Some elderly members of the commu-nity had to be rescued by boats and kayaks when torrential rains inundated the canals that criss-cross the city, causing them to overflow. Rabbi Steven Weil, senior managing director of the Orthodox Union, flew to Houston and helped assess the damage. He reports that flood waters stood several feet deep in many structures, ruining a great deal of property, including many seforim at both United Or-thodox Synagogue of Houston and Meyerland Minyan. Thankfully, sifrei Torah survived un-scathed at both shuls.

The Orthodox Union will coordinate the distribution of financial aid to the Houston community through its disaster relief fund.

Please help by contributing at OU.org/giving/houston-relief-fund.

Rabbi Major Joseph Friedman serves as a chaplain with 164th Airlift Wing, Tennessee ANG, Memphis, Tennessee. One of only a handful of rabbis in the Air Guard, and despite being the only member of the Jewish faith in his Wing, Chaplain Friedman is the most-requested chaplain at the 164th for invocations, devotionals, and counseling. Rabbi Friedman is the full-time Support Chaplain for the Wing, one of less than a dozen full-time National Guard Chaplains in the country. Prior to his military career, Rabbi Friedman served for four years as Director of the Midwest Region of NCSY, followed by pulpit positions at Beth Israel Congregation in Omaha, NE and B’nai Israel Congregation in Norfolk, VA. He finished Law School in May, 2012, and is a member of the Tennessee Bar. Rabbi Friedman was also the founder and bass player of a Jewish band, Kesher, and he appeared on Wheel of Fortune in 1986! Rabbi Friedman and his wife Melissa have six sons, three daughters-in-law, and three grandsons. Three of his sons live in Israel; two finished their IDF service, and one began his service in January.
