FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK… Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, I wish to take this opportunity to inform you of a program that St. Francis de Sales is embarking upon and that I ask each of you to embrace. It is called the Generous Hearts Campaign. As you read my message below, it will provide you with some transparency of what our parish’s vision, the state of the parish and what we need to do going forward. I recognize that and I am blessed to have such faithful and dedicated parishioners. For that I am truly thankful and grateful. Stewardship is a part of our Catholic spirituality. It requires prayerful reflection, an acceptance of responsibilities and generous hearts. “Tithing should not be undertaken in a ‘what will I get out of it?’ mental attitude. The important thing is what God will get out of it: our gratitude for his countless blessings; our proclamation of his dominion over us; and more resources for the spread of the Good News of salvation.” (This quote is from “How Much Should I Give to My Parish?” written by Florence Wedge and published by Liguori.) Unfortunately, collections have not fully covered our operating expenses as of late and this is a concern. Generous Hearts will help us to increase our offertory with the ultimate goal of covering these obligations. Our mission statement includes that we “seek to LIVE JESUS through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit by ministering to the needs of our brothers and sisters through Word, Worship, Education and Service.” Generous Hearts will help us toward our mission. With your participation we will be able to accomplish our goal while providing quality services you have become accustomed to. With that I am asking that each of you take the time to prayerfully reflect on your level of sacrificial giving to the parish and respond with some commitment for the next year and the years beyond. As always, I keep all of you and your families in my prayers. Again, I am very thankful for each of you and all that you do and for your continued support. God’s Blessings, Fr.

THANK YOU FR. TOM; GOD BLESS YOU! As many of you know, Fr. Tom Fait has been struggling with health issues for the past few years. Recently, Fr. Tom wrote me an e-mail to let me know that his physical disabilities have worsened, making it impossible for him to continue to celebrate the Mass and hear Confessions. He wrote, “Please express my love and deep gratitude to the sisters and brothers of SFDS for the privilege of celebrating the Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation with them. I know that these past ten years are an unsurpassed blessing in my life.” When I wrote Fr. Tom, I told him, “I don’t know how to thank you enough for all you have done for our parish. You will be greatly missed by our community of prayer.” Please keep Fr. Tom in your prayers. He has provided a great service for our parish community over the years with his wisdom, profound spirituality, inspiring homilies, and priestly presence, and for that we are truly thankful. God bless you Fr. Tom! Peace, Fr. Jim Schuerman

THE END IS NEAR!!! No, not the end of the world. The end of our Million Hours of Volunteering Challenge. The Holy Doors will be closing soon, some on Nov. 13 and the Holy Door at the cathedral in Milwaukee and in Rome on Nov. 20. We have added significantly to the wine in our chalice but let’s give it one last push to see if we can add just a little bit more of the volunteer spirit to make more wine. Drop your forms into the boxes at both entrances or you can email me at [email protected]. You can even call me, Millie McCormick at (630) 310-4703. Choose any of those methods but let’s squeeze those last volunteer juices and turn them into hours for our chalice. You have done a great job so far with the variety and number of volunteer hours submitted. Don’t stop now!!! The end is near!

AN OVERVIEW OF CATHOLIC FUNERAL RITES The Vigil for the Deceased, the Funeral Liturgy and the Rite of Committal

“At the death of a Christian, whose life of faith was begun in the waters of Baptism and strengthened at the Eucharistic table, the Church intercedes on behalf of the deceased because of its confident belief that death is not the end, nor does it break the bonds forged in life. The Church also ministers to the sorrowing and consoles them in the funeral rites with the comforting Word of God and the Sacrament of the Eucharist.” (Order of Christian Funerals, #4) The Catholic Church has a long history and experience of assisting individuals to prepare spiritually for death and assisting families dealing with sickness, death, burial and bereavement of loved ones. There is a trend among some to omit the traditional Catholic funeral rites when they experience death of their loved one in favor of a prayer service at a funeral home or a private graveside service. In many of these cases, it is because the children of the deceased have not been active participants in the sacramental life of the Church. We must educate and counsel our Catholic families so they understand and appreciate the spiritual and emotional support derived from a full and active participation in the Catholic funeral ritual. The Catholic funeral ritual consist of three separate and sequential rites as the most fitting way to celebrate the pilgrimage of the deceased Christian. Over the next several weeks, we will publish frequently asked questions, as outlined by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, including cremation and burial in our Catholic cemetery. Frequently Asked Questions regarding Catholic Funerals Where is the basic understanding and theology of Catholic funerals to be found? The Order of Christian Funerals, published in 1989, contains a clear theology of the attitude of the Catholic Church toward life after death and thus the respect the Church has for the human person, body and soul. An appendix to this ritual on cremation was published in 1997. The use of both is mandated in the United States. How is respect to be shown to the deceased? The body of the deceased is to buried (interment) or entombed in a mausoleum (entombment). These practices demonstrate Christian faith in awaiting the resurrection. May Catholics who have been divorced and remarried outside the Church or who have committed suicide be buried with a Catholic ceremony? Yes, such circumstances of themselves do not exclude the possibility of a Catholic burial. In individual cases the Chancery Office of the archdiocese should be consulted. Overview of Christian Funeral Rites How many parts make up the funeral rites? There are three parts: 1) the Vigil, 2) the Funeral Liturgy (with or without Mass) and 3) the Rite of Committal. Besides these, other rites are provided, e.g., prayers just after death, prayers for gathering in the presence of the body at the beginning of a visitation, and prayers for transferring the body to the church. Must funeral rites be led by priests? The ritual of the Catholic Church allows for priests or deacons, to conduct the various services including the Vigil, a Funeral Liturgy apart from a Funeral Mass, and the Rite of Committal. Lay leaders of prayer may conduct the Vigil and the Rite of Committal. How best can families prepare for these rites? Family and friends may and should actively participate in planning these rites. Such working together can aid in the grieving process. There are many options in the rituals that provide for a variety of approaches. The final wishes of the deceased are to be respected to the extent possible. May any of the rites be omitted? Since the thee rites flow one in to another and provide a time of consolation for family members and friends through the liturgy, it seems best to use all three rites. To be continued next week…

MONTH OF NOVEMBER: PRAY FOR THE SUFFERING SOULS “And the world passes away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” (1 John 2:17) “Before All Soul’s day, I went to the cemetery at dusk. Although it was locked, I managed to open the gate a bit and said. “If you need something, my dear little souls, I will be glad to help you to the extent that the rule permits me.” I then heard these words: Do the will of God; we are happy in the measure that we have fulfilled God’s will.” St. Faustina (Diary, 518). Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace, Amen. Visit a cemetery from Nov. 1-8, and pray for the holy souls. A plenary indulgence is applicable to the souls in purgatory during these days. On the other days of the year, a partial indulgence may be obtained. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. Conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence: Reception of sacramental confession Reception of Holy Communion Pray three prayers for Our Holy Father’s intentions (Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, etc.) All conditions must be met within eight days prior or after the prescribed work. One must be in a state of grace and have no attachment to any sin, including venial sin. Venial sin renders a partial indulgence. Only one plenary indulgence may be gained per day; whereas a partial indulgence can be acquired more than once a day.
