Structure of the program

Page 9: Welcome to the Master’s program · PowerPoint-Präsentation Author: Andreas Wieser Created Date: 9/18/2019 10:13:15 AM

||Geomatic Engineering– Welcome Day

The average workload of all courses, projects and the

master’s thesis is quantified in credit points (CP) according to

the European Credit Transfer Systems /ECTS):

This includes

Contact times with instructors (contact hours, SWS)

Preparations and post-processing

Autonomous work (e.g. homework assignments, projects, thesis writing)

Preparation for exams

16.9.2019www.geomatik.ethz.ch 9

Workload

Workload

The Master’s programs at ETH are full time programs.

Usually for preparations and post-processing at least as

much time is required as for lectures & labs

Plan your workload for each semester ahead and keep track of the times actually invested, update the

plan as needed to avoid overload.

Talk to fellow students and instructors early if you notice that the workload is significantly less or more

than to be expected based on the CP.

Page 11: Welcome to the Master’s program · PowerPoint-Präsentation Author: Andreas Wieser Created Date: 9/18/2019 10:13:15 AM

||Geomatic Engineering– Welcome Day

Theory and practical application

go along hand-in-hand

Autonomous studying and working is facilitated

and expected

Labs are typically an extension to lectures and

other courses (typically not vice versa!)

(3) Scientific conduct, avoiding plagiarism

(4) Writing a scientific article

(5) Presentation technique

• Critical reading of scientific articles• Choose one of the offered topics (3-4 papers; topics announced soon)

• Write a summary and comment (~5 pages)

• Give a presentation (15 min presentation, 15 min feedback)

• Visit of at least 3 scientific presentations (e.g. VERA or similar)

||Geomatic Engineering– Welcome Day

Topics offered by professorships,

but also your own proposals are welcome

Management of more demanding

projects on your own

Working in interdisciplinary context and teams

(communication, identification of requirements,

missing skills, …)

Supervision by different

professorships or in collaboration

with company / external institution

Public presentation of results / findings

(attend this year’s event: 12 Dec, 2019)

16.9.2019www.geomatik.ethz.ch 14

Interdisciplinary Project (IPA, compulsory)

Recent example: Cartographic

visualization of the global wind electricity

generation, use and potential

Recent example: Photorealistic rendering and

video generation from laser scans of an

archeologic site in Egypt

Scope of work embedded into

actual research of IGP

Management of more comprehensive

geodetic projects on your own

Working with most recent technologies

Permission by instructors required

(geodetic prerequisites)

Offered every other year

Final step in the master‘s program

Individual work under supervision of a professor

Proves capability of the respective student

to work independently on a theoretic or applied

topic using scientific methods

Topics are offered by the individual professorships

but may also be proposed by the students

The chosen topic must be within

one of the two chosen specializations

16.9.2019www.geomatik.ethz.ch 16

Master’s thesis

Recent example: GIOVE-A

measurements and analysis

Recent example: Using JavaScript to Design

a Web-based 3D Turbulence Simulator

Written and oral exams, reports, thesis documents,

demonstrations etc. are basis of assessment

All assessments are listed on your academic record

or the addendum document (also all failed exams)

Types of assessments/exams: session exams, end of semester exams, semester

performance

Details of exams are outlined in electronic course catalogue individually for each

course

Prepare the students for the challenges of tomorrow

Nobody knows what they will be

Focus is therefore on:

Solid foundations in disciplines relevant for engineering

Up-to-date knowledge and skills in Geomatic Engineering

depending on the chosen specializations

Capability and willingness to identify and solve problems

Capability of self-motivated continuing education

Self-confidence and capability of realistic self-assessment

Critical thinking!

Establish crosslinks between courses

(also across specializations and disciplines)

If you notice that you lack basic knowledge – catch up asap (talk to the instructors if

you find out that they expect more than you expected)

Find out your primary interests, explore your skills

Be proactive and engage in curricular and extracurricular activities
