What is an LED?
A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a ‘solid state’ electronic component (a diode) which produces light by ‘injection luminescence’ - a different process from other lamps and tubes.‘Injection luminescence’ is a result of the semiconductor properties of the LED die and the electrical voltage applied to it. High temperatures and high voltages are not required.

Typical LED Lifetimes
If an LED is operated at its’ stated data sheet maximum current and an ambient temperature of 25°C, these would be representative lifetime figures:
Orange 250k hours
Red 150k hoursYellow 125k hoursGreen 30k hours (will improve)Blue / White 20k hours (will improve)

BACKlight – LM03A
Features
The backlight module is another basic unitSupplied as a chain of 8 cable connected PCB’s 30mm x 30mm x 5mm each containing 4 LED’sPCB’s can be separated by cutting the wire linksThe PCB’s can be arranged in 3D shapes if requiredPower consumption 3.2 to 4W per complete moduleDepending on spacing between PCBs module length = 240 to 555mm

LINEARlight module – LM01A
FeaturesThe LINEARlight module is a basic moduleSupplied in strips 448mm x 10mm x 5mm containing 32 LED’s = 71 LEDs / metrePCB can be broken down into sub units 56mm x 10mm with 4 LED’sPower consumption: 3.2 to 4 Watts / module = 7.1 to 8.9 Watts / metreLuminous flux typically 20lm / metre (blue) to 155lm / metre (yellow)

LED emulation of cold cathode tubes
LINEARlight and LINEARlight flex modules housed in translucent coloured plastic tubes closely emulate tube lineage
• Low voltage operation• Shock and vibration resistant• Long lifetime

Assembly methods for LINEARlight and BACKlight
Self adhesive tapeFoam backed (2mm) VHB tape from 3M recommended
Nuts, bolts and washers with spacers (M4)Use spacers with BACKlight - do not tighten directly onto a surfaceTake care not to damage the printed circuit board with metal fixings!Use synthetic washers e.g. Nylon or synthetic nuts and bolts
Printed circuit board pillarsSelf adhesive or bolted to panelModule 'snaps on' using mounting holes

Electrical connection to LINEARlight and BACKlight
LINEARlightSolder wires directly to the module contact pads
Suggested minimum cable type 7/0.2mm (0.22mm2 - up to 3 modules) or 16/0.2mm equipment wire (0.5mm2 - up to 8 modules)
Use the purpose made connector system from BJB
BACKlightUse a connector system to connect to the flying leads from the modulesDo not solder directly to the circuit board (unless new protective coating is applied afterwards)Do not desolder connection wires from the circuit board (unless new protective coating is applied afterwards)

Assembly methods for LINEARlight flex
The module is supplied with a self adhesive backingSuitable for surfaces with a similar expansion rate to the module e.g. the majority of metals and some syntheticsThe self adhesive backing can be changed to suit other materials
Electrical connectionSolder wires directly to the module contact pads
Suggested minimum cable type 7/0.2mm (0.22mm2 - up to 3.9m module length) or 16/0.2mm equipment wire (0.5mm2 - up to 8.4m module length)
