All Catholics are familiar with the theme during Advent, “prepare ye the way .. “ this preparation has several steps that we need to consider. We become aware of the influence of the world on us and how much we yield to the agenda of the world. We become aware of the need to let the Spirit of the Lord guide and inspire us. We become aware of God’s Mercy on us that enabled us to become a believer in Jesus. As a result of such considerations we feel the welling up of a deep sense of Gratitude to Jesus for His bringing the salvation to us and enabling us to become children of God by accepting Him as our Lord and Savior. As a result of all these, we realize the importance of entering into a personal relationship with Jesus. And truly our religion is a matter of relationship, our relationship with God through Jesus. This cannot happen if we do not develop a personal intimacy with Jesus on a daily and constant basis. We have to really love Him and keep Him close in our hearts all the time. We have to have the habit of nurturing this relationship through a continuous communication which we call the communion with the Lord. This is easily done through the frequent recital of devotional songs and whispering prayers, and blunt dialogues with Jesus on a regular basis. The more we do this the more we feel closer to Jesus. As a consequence we find it easier to restrict our time with social media and entertainment world that used to consume the major portion of our wake up time leading to an addiction which we find harder to escape from. Many a time our faith practices are mere routine and personally not very challenging or enriching. Such habits will eventually develop a sense of hypocrisy. We can sense a lack of any sentiments for Jesus and eventually it will end up in our exit from church as well as from the very faith that we one time held at high esteem. Two possibilities await at this juncture: either we let go of the faith and be lost forever or we recognize the responsibility to repair the damage and renew our faith and make it more personal and personally enriching. The second choice is beneficial for our salvation. When we sincerely prepare the way for the Lord into our lives, an internal cleansing takes place. Repentance and reconciling will be easier, with God and with one another. We feel humble knowing that God’s mercy and not our merits that helped us become children of God through Jesus. We do not have anything to claim like the traditional Jews that Paul was talking about (Rom.15:9). It is God’s Mercy that gave us the privilege to be His children through Jesus. An innate need for a personal intimacy with Jesus will spring up. Salvation becomes real when we are personally attached to the person of Jesus. Then we know that our religion is a matter of relationship. Let it begin with this Christmas. Please teach our children to make personal friendship with Jesus on a daily basis. Help them to do something always to reinforce that friendship with Jesus and make it very personal. God bless you all.

Todos los católicos están familiarizados con el tema durante el Adviento, "prepárense el camino ..." esta preparación tiene varios pasos que debemos tener en cuenta. Nos damos cuenta de la influencia del mundo sobre nosotros y de cuánto cedemos a la agenda del mundo. Nos damos cuenta de la necesidad de dejar que el Espíritu del Señor nos guíe e inspire. Nos damos cuenta de la misericordia de Dios sobre nosotros que nos permitió ser creyentes en Jesús. Como resultado de tales consideraciones, sentimos el brote de un profundo sentido de gratitud a Jesús por habernos traído la salvación y permitirnos convertirnos en hijos de Dios al aceptarlo como nuestro Señor y Salvador. Como resultado de todo esto, nos damos cuenta de la importancia de entablar una relación personal con Jesús. Y verdaderamente nuestra religión es una cuestión de relación, nuestra relación con Dios a través de Jesús. Esto no puede suceder si no desarrollamos una intimidad personal con Jesús diariamente y de manera constante. Tenemos que amarlo realmente y mantenerlo cerca de nuestros corazones todo el tiempo. Tenemos que tener el hábito de nutrir esta relación a través de una comunicación continua que llamamos la comunión con el Señor. Esto se hace fácilmente a través del recital frecuente de canciones devocionales y oraciones susurrantes, y diálogos contundentes con Jesús de manera regular. Cuanto más hacemos esto, más nos sentimos más cerca de Jesús. Como consecuencia, nos resulta más fácil restringir nuestro tiempo con las redes sociales y el mundo del entretenimiento que solían consumir la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo de despertar, lo que lleva a una adicción de la que nos resulta más difícil escapar. Muchas veces nuestras prácticas de fe son meras rutinarias y personalmente no son muy desafiantes o enriquecedoras. Tales hábitos eventualmente desarrollarán una sensación de hipocresía. Podemos sentir la falta de sentimientos hacia Jesús y eventualmente terminará en nuestra salida de la iglesia, así como en la misma fe que alguna vez tuvimos en alta estima. En esta coyuntura nos esperan dos posibilidades: dejar de lado la fe y perdernos para siempre o reconocemos la responsabilidad de reparar el daño y renovar nuestra fe y hacerla más personal y personalmente enriquecedora. La segunda opción es beneficiosa para nuestra salvación. Cuando preparamos sinceramente el camino para que el Señor entre en nuestras vidas, se lleva a cabo una limpieza interna. El arrepentimiento y la reconciliación serán más fáciles, con Dios y con los demás. Nos sentimos humildes al saber que la misericordia de Dios y no nuestros méritos nos ayudaron a convertirnos en hijos de Dios a través de Jesús. No tenemos nada que reclamar como los judíos tradicionales de los que hablaba Pablo (Rom.15: 9). Es la misericordia de Dios que nos dio el privilegio de ser sus hijos a través de Jesús. Surgirá una necesidad innata de una intimidad personal con Jesús. La salvación se vuelve real cuando estamos personalmente apegados a la persona de Jesús. Entonces sabemos que nuestra religión es una cuestión de relación. Que comience con esta Navidad. Por favor, enseñe a nuestros hijos a ha-cer amistad personal con Jesús a diario. Ayúdelos a hacer algo siempre para reforzar esa amistad con Jesús y hacerlo muy personal. Dios los bendiga a todos.

SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ (c. 1542-1591)

Juan Yepes nació en España siendo hijo de un noble y de “una mujer de pueblo”. Ingresó a los 21 años a la orden religiosa de los Carmelitas Descalzos, donde asumiría el nombre de Juan de la Cruz. En 1567 conoció a Teresa de Ávila, quien influenciaría su corazón y espiritualidad y posteriormente, junto a ella, renovarían su comunidad religiosa. No obstante, los talentos y vida espiritual de Juan de la Cruz generaron muchos celos en sus hermanos religiosos a tal grado de que en 1577 lo encerraron ellos mismos durante nueve meses, expuesto a abusos y humillaciones. Gracias a una “noche oscura” logra escapar y vuelve a su monasterio, en el que se le siguió maltratando e ignorando. Durante su cautiverio y años posteriores, escribió los más bellos tratados de espiritualidad y mística, entre ellos La noche oscura del alma. No obstante, su obra no fue valorada sino hasta después de su muerte. Debido a la profundidad de su pensamiento fue declarado Doctor de la Iglesia por el Papa Pío XI en 1926.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION SAINT JOHN OF THE CROSS (c. 1542-1591)

How beautiful the experience of love for God and neighbor, a fire deep within! How disheartening when love suddenly cools and our souls grow dark, our prayer arid. How painful when misunderstanding, even rejection, comes our way, sometimes from those we least expect. For all such “seasons of the soul,” an inspiring fellow-pilgrim is the poet and mystic John of the Cross. As a young Carmelite, he was recruited by Teresa of Ávila for her Discalced (“barefoot,” evangelical poverty) Carmelite reform, striving to renew the Church from within after the Protestant Reformation had led countless religious away. John suffered unspeakably harsh abuse, even imprisonment, from friars who rejected this reform. Yet during these times of deepest suffering, John composed spiritual masterpieces that still guide souls to God, their titles reflecting his own painful yet ultimately victorious journey: from The Dark Night of the Soul through The Ascent of Mount Carmel to his Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love. REASON TO REJOICE

Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing.

Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). MOTIVO DE REGOCIJO

El color morado se usa durante el Adviento para expresar el carácter de este tiempo de preparación espir-itual para la Navidad y la “venida del Señor”. Pero en el Tercer Domingo de Adviento, anteriormente conocido como Domingo Gaudete (“regocijo” en latín), se puede agregar el color rosa al ambiente litúrgico. Toda la litur-gia está impregnada de regocijo.

La primera lectura de hoy y el Evangelio proclaman la realidad de la obra salvadora de Dios entre nosotros. Isaías describe con exuberancia la idílica trans-formación de toda la creación como resultado de la pres-encia de Dios en medio de su pueblo.
