WELCOME

Welcome to Virginia and Colonial Williamsburg! During this ti me of unprecedented challenges it is ap-

propriate that we are gathering in this historic locati on. The challenges faced by our nati on’s founders

required that they collaborate and uti lize all of their resources to successfully create a new nati on based

on principles that were revoluti onary at that ti me. We hope that you will use the ti me you have here

this week to relax, refl ect, share some Revoluti onary Thinking and prepare for the future.

The Host Committ ee has att empted to implement our theme throughout the program. In keeping with

our theme, we have reduced the amount of printed materials that you will receive and we will be uti liz-

ing electronic media to communicate with you throughout the conference. We have also made decisions

to cut costs in areas that have limited impact on our learning experience.

Again, Welcome. We’ve been looking forward to your arrival.

Jerry Roeder and John Evans

Host Committ ee Co-Chairs and the amazing, hard-working Host Committ ee

Hello SEAHO Colleagues!

Welcome to Williamsburg and the 45th Annual SEAHO Conference - I hope that you are ready for some “Revoluti onary Thinking!” Many hours of planning and preparati on have gone into this year’s conference to make it meaningful for you. During your ti me here, I would like to request that you do a few things for me (and you):

•As you see John Evans, Jerry Roeder, and other members of the Host Committ ee, please thank them for their commitment to planning and hosti ng us at such a wonderful locati on. •Look for programs and acti viti es that challenge you and get you out of your “comfort zone.” Adrienne Frame and the Conference Program Committ ee have developed an excellent program schedule that has a litt le something for everyone att ending.•Spend ti me with our Associates! Without them, we could not host this event. I strongly encourage you to make your way to the Virginia Room and learn more about the products and services they can provide and say “thank you” to them for joining us.

Finally, I want to thank everyone whose contributi ons went towards making SEAHO a success this year. Whether you served on a committ ee, presented a program, nominated a colleague for an award, or parti cipated in the numerous other opportuniti es to get involved – you have made a diff erence. Thank you and enjoy your SEAHO experience!

Steve Stauff erUniversity of KentuckySEAHO President, 2009-10

On behalf of the SEAHO Program Committ ee, welcome to SEAHO 2010! The members of the program committ ee have worked diligently to provide a broad spectrum of programming opportuniti es to enrich the conference experience of our dedicated colleagues throughout the region. There is truly something for everyone on our schedule here in Williamsburg from faciliti es issues, to assignments and technology challenges, to student development, professional growth and personal explorati on. We hope that each of you will fi nd a dynamic program to att end during each of the programming sessions here in Williamsburg. Thanks to our talented members for sharing their many gift s at this conference.

We are also very honored to be joined by our disti nguished keynote speaker, Dr. Jennifer Arnold Klein. I had the pleasure of working with Jennifer when she was a Resident Assistant and Student Programming Specialist University of Miami. Her remarks are sure to be a highlight of the conference experience here in Williamsburg. You will not want to miss her presentati on on Wednesday aft ernoon.

I wish to thank the members of the SEAHO 2010 program committ ee and the dedicated state representati ves in our region for their assistance in recruiti ng programs for our conference and reviewing and slotti ng the off erings that we have for our colleagues this week. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of professionals in service to our SEAHO membership! Enjoy the conference and our ti me together here in Williamsburg, VA. GO SEAHO!

THE OPPRESSION GALLERYWednesday, February 24 10:00am - 6:00pm Computer Lounge

The Oppression Gallery is a diversity initi ati ve to represent the realiti es of oppression in an experienti al manner. It gives parti cipants the opportunity to see and hear the realiti es of oppression as a stepping stone towards creati ng diversity awareness.

The Oppression Gallery is intended to be eye-opening and consciousness-raising and is built as a brief introductory experience for those who have rarely experienced diff erence. The rati onale is that some people are oft en unable to fully understand oppression and discriminati on unti l they have experienced it fi rst-hand.

The experience should sti mulate thoughts, feelings, and emoti ons around the issues and images presented. Therefore the gallery is oft en shocking and disturbing to those who have never experienced blatant forms of discriminati on or oppression. A number of feelings can be evoked as a result of the full-sensory experience.

This program is sponsored by the SEAHO Human Relati ons Committ ee. We invite you to consider joining our eff orts. Please see our complete committ ee descripti on at our display.

Using Schlossberg’s Theory of Transiti ons to Revoluti onize Programming in Apartment Communiti es

Tim Blair, Associate Director, North Carolina State University

The unique aspects of apartment communiti es can create some signifi cant challenges to community development. Whether the community is upper-class students or internati onal students and their families, many of the theories used guide community development eff orts in traditi onal halls do not always translate well. Nancy Schlossberg’s Transiti ons Theory and concept of “marginality vs. matt ering” can help staff meet these challenges by providing a framework to direct eff orts that celebrate individuals and build community.

Getti ng Creati ve: Using Dining Services to Impact Resident Interacti ons

Shay Davis Litt le, Director of Residence Hall Administrati ve Operati ons, University of GeorgiaDarlena Jones, Director of Research and Development, Educati onal Benchmarking (EBI)

Longitudinal studies of the ACUHO-I/EBI Resident Assessment indicate that sati sfacti on with personal space and dining services has improved while personal interacti on has declined. Since personal interacti on is the top predictor of a student’s percepti on of the eff ecti veness of the residence hall, and an important component to student development, it is vital that programs bett er understand and work to improve personal interacti on. We propose that getti ng creati ve in the use of the dining facility (via creati ve meal plans create use of space or creati ve dining clubs) could promote student interacti on.

Campus Housing as a Foundati on of Low-Income Persistence

Neal Holly, Doctoral Student, College of William & MaryBrian Reed, Doctoral Student, University of Virginia

Low-income students are more likely to leave college without a degree than their wealthier peers. With insti tuti onal focus on gaining presti ge and aligning recruitment and retenti on models to meet that goal, low-income students have become marginalized on many of our campuses. Housing and residence life departments are in a unique positi on with their faciliti es staff and training to become campus supporters and leaders for this populati on. Learn about resources and strategies to not only assist low-income students in the residence halls but also advocate for their needs in the greater campus community.
