One of the things which makes Kyogle High School such a great school is the students who come here every day. The majority of our students are friendly, respectful and wanting to achieve success at school. They reflect the expectations of their families and the communities from which they come from. Over the last couple of weeks both Mr Landers and myself have interviewed a small minority of students who have made poor choices either while they have been at school, or outside school and then allowing the consequences of these poor choices to follow them to school. Neither of us take pleasure in having to contact parents or carers in order to discuss their student‘s behaviour and how, should it continue, the behaviour may lead to a suspension from school. The only thing worse is discussing a student‘s actual suspension. I would like to define clearly my approach to both suspension warnings and suspensions from school. A suspension warning, is issued to a student who has broken school rules on a number of occasions, despite the interventions of teachers. Examples might include repeated truancy, repeated failure to follow instructions, repeated failure to complete assigned detentions or repeated harassment towards other students. When a student is officially cautioned over a particular behaviour, both they and their parents or carers understand that any repeat of that behaviour will, in most cases, result in a suspension from school. In the majority of cases, support between school and home for the student means that a suspension rarely occurs. Suspensions from school are, overall, not pleasant for anyone concerned. We certainly do not enjoy issuing them. They are intended to be a time of reflection for the student, under the supervision of their parents or carers, and a time for the school to consider how best to plan for the student‘s return to school so the situation which meant they were suspended is eliminated or minimised. The length of a suspension generally reflects the time needed by the school for this planning. Suspensions from school are only effective if the student, their parents or carers and the school are all able to attend a suspension resolution meeting which addresses the issues which led to the suspension in a constructive way and plan together how they will ensure these issues will not cause further problems.

Principal’s Report

The Department of Education and Communities requires suspension for the following behaviours:

Continued disobedience, as described above, often involving the issuing of an official caution, suspension warning, before a suspension is assigned.

Persistent misbehaviour which interferes with the work of teachers or the learning of other students.

Aggressive behaviour, both physical and verbal. This includes the use of offensive language, which is not tolerated at Kyogle High School.

Physical violence which causes pain and/or injury to others.

Criminal behaviour, for example vandalism, theft or damage to the property of students or staff.

The possession, or use of, alcohol or illegal

drugs

The possession or use of weapons, implements that could be used as weapons or replicas of weapons.

As Relieving Principal of Kyogle High School, it is my intention to defend the rights of all students to high quality teaching and learning every day they come to school by enforcing all of the above. I know that this is what our community expects and I take very seriously the role that I, along with all teachers at Kyogle High School to ensure a quality learning environment.

Did you know... Women make up 51% of the world‘s population. And yet, women‘s sport makes up only 7% of all Australian sport coverage. Last Friday, 6

President Marne Petherbridge and myself attended the International Women‘s day festival at the Hilton, Surfers Paradise. The festival is organised to celebrate the inspiration and the local and global growth through the work of women. This is to encourage young women to be inspired and informed about future possibilities for women in leadership. The program featured speeches and presentations from many strong, powerful and influential women. Employee of Google, Stephanie Boardman, shared her experience with the global corporation; who strive to ―create technology to improve the world.‖ Google embodies DIVERSITY as the key component to their success. They believe that to reach and cater to every individual user in the world; they must utilise a divergent workforce to reflect their users. The company‘s ―googly‖ nature empowers creativity and an audacious environment to stimulate innovational thinking. To foster the creative workplace, Google allows pets at work, provides ‗sleeping pods‘, free food, showers, games and bright, colourful fun spaces, plus many other ‗cool‘ aspects which exemplify their ―work hard play hard‖ motto. Google embraces such an important message and invests in the value of diversity- which I believe is the doorway to a more ethical and better future for all. So, in light of International Women‘s day, why not support Google‘s message and embrace diversity.

Hi All—Mum‘s, Dads and extended family. I am hoping to encourage you to come along for 4 hours just once to experience life as a canteen volunteer. You will enjoy a very stress-less, social day which gives you an opportunity to observe what goes on in our children‘s school. You will meet teachers and students and you will be helping to raise funds which benefit our children. As far as the jobs on the day go, Faye makes sure you only do what you feel comfortable with—that is if you don‘t like dealing with the money or serving, you can do something else. We have lost a number of parents and as such we really need some more helpers. So please, give it some consideration. I promise you will enjoy a lovely day, your lunch will be provided, your help will be greatly appreciated and I am sure you will be happy to come back! So, if you are willing to help, please call Faye on 6632 1300, we would love to hear from You!

Cheers—Jo Bulmer Parent Volunteer

During the later part of this term students are working on an individual computing based project. Each project is of their own choosing and requires students to develop a portfolio that documents their design process. Students are to select the project on the basis of interest and it seeks to develop their own self directed learning. Pictured are Year 7 students Emily, Harry and Ember who are currently working on computer hardware. Using an old computer they have dismantled it and are now reassembling it. Other examples of student projects include music production, robot development, video production, web sites and game development. Mr O’Meara
