Dear Ms . Williams,

Our project, entitled Natural History Room at Union School, requested $971 .75 from the Nongame Wildlife Conservation Fundto aid in the development of a nature room at Union School inWeldon Springs State Recreation Area through the purchase ofteaching aids, habitat enhancement, and reference materials .

Our objectives were to : (1) move Union School to Weldon Springs,(2)renovate the school and furnish it according to the period,(3) establish a second room as an outdoor education and naturalhistory center, (4) enhance the area surrounding the schoolas wildlife habitat, (5) equip the natural history room withteaching aids, science equipment, reference books and materialsto aid in the identification and study of wildlife observedin the park, (6) assemble collections of leaves, wildflowers, plaster casts of animal tracks, found objects, and taxidermist-mounted animals representative of those commonly found in thepark, and (7) develop lesson plans to aid teachers .

At least seven distinct habitat types are represented withinthe park . This variety offers excellent opportunities for naturestudy . Opportunities abound for viewing and studying wildlifeand plants native to Central Illinois in an undisturbed setting .The nature room will re-enforce lessons learned on outings intothe park and will expand the scope and types of nature projectswhich teachers will be able to provide .

The following pages will detail our use of the Nongame WildlifeConservation Fund grant in accordance with our agreement .

We still have much work to do, but school classes were alreadyusing the facilities and equipment this spring, and we areworking with children and families every weekend this summer .

- Move Union School to Weldon Springs, set on Foundation, renovate, and furnish

Union School was successfully moved to Weldon Springs .It has been set on its foundation and major renovation has beencompleted : roof, exterior siding, porches, insulation, plaster, floors restored, windows, blackboards, trim, lights, and shades .

The main room has been furnished circa 1900-1910 - desks, recitation bench, library table, globe, stove, bookcases, etc .The room will serve as a working classroom for school classesthat wish to relocate for a day of nature study in the park .While work was not completed as soon as we had hoped, a numberof school classes were able to use the facility during the 1989-90 school year .

We have purchased a display case for the natural historyroom and a storage cabinet has been procured to house equipmentand books . Exhibits in this room will include :

"Master Builders of the Park : which will highlight thebeaver (Mounted specimen, artist's drawing of the inside ofa lodge, photos of dam and lodge, example of beaver cut tree .Text : The Beaver, How he cuts trees, Why he cuts trees, Adaptedfor life in the water), Bald faced hornet and paper wasp(Abandoned nests, Smithsonian magazine article photos, Text :

"Bluebird Trail" - Examples of successful bluebird nest, squirrel damage, vandalism, wren nest, chickadee nest, fieldmouse nest . Text : typical bluebird nesting timetable, whatis a bluebird trail, why the Eastern bluebird needs help, diet .

"Habitats" - collection of found objects to represent eachhabitat type found in the park : lake, pond, creek, meadow, woodland, native prairie, fence row, and marsh . Map of thepark in the center directs visitors to good examples of eachhabitat type .

- Pressed leaf and wildflower collections are mounted innotebooks kept in the room .

- Establish and maintain butterfly garden . With the help ofJohn Culbert, retired professor of horticulture from theUniversity of Illinois, we designed a butterfly garden whichincludes only native prairie forbs . The butterfly garden willnot only enhance habitat for butterflies and allow interpretationof area butterflies, but will also allow interpretation offlowering prairie plants native to Central Illinois .
