The mission of Well-U is to improve the health and wellness of Uni-versity of Rochester employees by promoting a work environment that encourages healthy behaviors, and by providing the tools,

resources, and education necessary to support healthful living. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview the Well-U pro-grams available for University of Rochester employees and data about program use.

YOURHEALTH

INTRODUCING

An Integrated Approach to Wellness

YOURhealth represents a partnership between the University’s diverse array of wellness programs and services. The partner-ship promotes the integrated use of programs designed to help

individuals manage or prevent issues that impact their life. In 2014, the University introduced the YOURhealth solar system.

This “rebranding” of services showcases the University’s unique health and wellness offerings, while streamlining communication with clear and consistent messaging and an easily recognizable logo.

CULTUREABOUT WELL-U’S

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Strong Employee Assistance program provides up to five free counselling sessions for each University employee and an additional five visits for each member of their household. 276 new cases opened; 23 cases reopened;116 preexisting cases with activity; 417 total cases Well-U partnered with EAP to provide new burn-out presentations.

Elevator Signs

TAKE THE STAIRS Well-U installed catchy signage by all highly-trafficked elevator banks in the Medical Center, reminding employ-ees to take a few extra steps to better their health. Signs include arrows directing employees to nearest stairwell.

FITNESS CLASSES CrossFit, Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, Bootcamp classes offered at different times and locations to accommodate varying sched-ules. Classes ranged in length from 20 minutes to 1 hour. 7,082 participants (not unique)

A local food share program connecting UR employees with fresh, local, sustainable food. Shareholders pick up pre-boxed deliveries of seasonal produce weekly at the Medical Center from June-September. 78 members

BE IN BALANCE Foods in Café 601 that meet the Be In Balance cri-teria (lower in calories, fat, sugar, and sodium) are la-beled with the BIB logo. Employees receive punches on a “loyalty card” each time they purchase a BIB item. Cards can be entered to win raffle prizes.

CHAMPIONS Well-U Champions repre-sent a wide spectrum of UR employees and serve as liaisons between Well-U and University departments. Primarily responsible for promoting wellness pro-grams to coworkers. Communicate employee needs and feedback to the Well-U team. 156 champions

Farmers MarketFRESH. LOCAL. HEALTHY.

The University of Rochester Farmers Market was implemented by Well-U in March and connects the UR community to sus-

tainable foods from local farmers. Each week, more than 20 vendors offer seasonal produce, baked goods, artisan

crafts, spices, meats and more. Market customers can meet the vendors, sample goods, and receive nutrition educa-

tion and cooking tips. By increasing access to fresh, local, and affordable food, the farmers market is in alignment with Well-U’s mission to support employee health. Open

from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 through October 29.

BETTER YOU, BETTER BABY

Partnered with the OBGYN Nurs-ing Department to begin offer-ing monthly presentations for expecting employees and their family members, in conjunction with monthly health observanc-es when appropriate. The fee for existing classes offered through Strong Beginnings were waived for University employees.

Stressbuster StationsDIY STRESS BALLSBuild a stress ball using a balloon, flour, and funnel. Learn about other stress reduction services available through Well-U. 271 participants.

LIVE COOKING DEMO

Participants enjoyed free meals prepared by University Food & Nutrition while learning about nutrition and cooking tips. 180 participants

Healthy Eating on the Run, Fad or Fact: The Truth about Gluten, and Get Some Sleep were just a few of the lunch n learns offered. Presenters included Strong Employee Assistance Program, Healthy Living Center, University Food & Nu-trition, and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. 508 participants

GUIDED RELAXATION

The Strong Employee As-sistance program led 15-minute guided relaxa-tions and discussed stress management techniques. 151 participants

MASSAGE DAYS Every Tuesday, free massage days were set up through Blanchard Chiropractic. Re-quests for massage days, which include 16 – 10 minute chair massages, were made by spe-cific departments. 290 participants

WELL-U OVERVIEWS

Well-U provided overview presentations to various em-ployee groups upon request. 392 participants

SELF-DEFENSE Self-defense classes were offered to equip employees with strategies to confront and defend against an attacker and provide tips to avoid becoming a victim. 33 participants

Park & StridePARK FARTHER. BE HEALTHIER.

A collaboration between Well-U and University of Roches-ter Parking & Transportation that highlights the benefits of walking, specifically, when going to and from your car

and your office. Signage in University parking lots display calories burned walking between designated parking lots

and entrances. Employees who park in a Park & Stride space are entered to win monthly raffle prizes. The program launched in Lot 1 in July and expanded to Lots 9, 11 and 12.

Pawsitive Attitude

Pet therapy is a powerful stress reliever. This program allows employees to take a break during the day to visit with friendly

therapy dogs. The program was held in Miner Library, URMC. 120 participants.

WEIGHT WATCHERS

Hosted four University Weight Watchers meetings. Discounts available for Weight Watchers online, At Work, or in the community. After com-pleting 16 consecutive weeks, employees receive a 50 percent reimbursement of the program fee. 285 participants

SPECIAL EVENTS

ABOUT WELL-U’S

AHA GO RED DAY

Well-U encourages faculty, staff, and students to “Go Red” for National Wear Red Day, part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign. Go Red for Women was created to raise awareness of the prevalence of heart disease.

In 2014, groups or indi-viduals sporting red attire were invited to submit a photo to Well-U for the Well-U Facebook page, and were entered in the American Heart Associa-tion’s #GoRedChallenge.

AMERICAN HEART WALK

Well-U forms a large team for the American Heart Association’s annual Roch-ester Heart Walk in April.

In 2014, the University of Rochester had over 290 par-ticipants raise funds and join together to walk and raise awareness for heart health.

Held 2nd annual Eat Well, Live Well Community Blood Pressure Challenge encouraging employees to get their blood pres-sure checked once dur-ing the month of May.

The blood pressure chal-lenge is a pledge taken by nearly 100 employers and community-based organizations in the greater Rochester area to raise awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure and the importance of “knowing your numbers.”

Increased number of screenings from 1,680 in 2013 to 1,971 in 2014.

EAT WELL, LIVE WELL

During this 8-week pro-gram, employees wear a pedometer to track steps and record cups of fruits and vegetables consumed each day. Employees compete within their de-partments and with other departments to acheieve the highest numbers.

3.5-mile company run held at Rochester Insti-tute of Technology.

The University of Rochester has been the largest team at this event since 2003.

• Well-U partners with the American Cancer Society to host the Great American Smokeout in November, encouraging smokers to make a plan to quit.

Well-U held three presenta-tions on e-cigarettes in addi-tion to a main event in Cafe 601 with information on tobacco cessation. Employ-ees who pledged to quit smoking signed a banner.

BIOMETRIC SCREENINGS

One-on-one screenings with a registered nurse are of-fered at various University

locations with a range of time-slots to accommodate varied work schedules.

Employees may receive a screen-ing once per calendar year.

The University began offering biometric screenings during mandatory occupational health updates (42 total).

PHA

The personal health assess-ment (PHA) is a confidential, self-administered question-

naire containing a series of ques-tions about lifestyle habits, health history and current health status. The PHA takes about 15 minutes to complete.

PHAs completed January 1 through March 31 resulted in a $125 incentive.

PHAs completed April 1 through December 31 resulted in a $100 incentive.

Incentives are loaded into pay-checks within 1-2 pay periods.

LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT

PROGRAMS are offered through the Healthy Living Center through a team of

physicians, dietitians, and coun-selors.

Typically 6-8 weeks in length, life-style management programs are held in group settings at various UR locations.

Programs include:

give participants the skills they need to manage their disease more effectively and reduce the burden of disease.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

PARTNERS

CLINICAL PROGRAMS

IMPLEMENTED in 2014, BHP is a unique mental health resource offering medication

consultation and management, as well as individual counseling for stress, anxiety and depression. The clinical team provides psychotherapy, prescribes medications, and consults with primary care physicians.

LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT

NEW FOR 2015

BASICS FOR BUILDING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

An introduction to in-formation and tools that have been found use-ful to improve nutrition, increase physical activity, and overcome barriers to making lifestyle change.

Four weekly one-hour group sessions are fa-cilitated by a registered dietitian, social worker or exercise physiologist.

Participants receive a free pedometer.

A registered dietitian will guide participants through Constan-tino’s Market and offer tips on reading food labels, price comparisons, and choosing the healthiest options.

BECOME A RUNNER

Well-U and the YMCA will team up to offer a free 8-week train-ing program designed to help new runners prepare safely and efficiently for a 5k.

MYFITNESSPAL

Eligible individuals fill out an online form with health questions to receive personalized, evidence-based in-

formation and resources tailored to their needs.

MyFitnessPal , a popular food tracking app, now contains food

items from Cafe 601. Users can track Cafe 601 menu items by

searching for “Cafe 601 at Strong” in the app’s search function.

SI.MEDITERRANEO Well-U is teaming up with Cafe 601 and Barilla to launch sÌ.mediterraneo, a nutritional program that will introduce new menu choices to Cafe 601.

WELLNESS FAIRS Well-U joined with YOURhealth partners to host wellness fairs at Corporate Woods and Strong West.

YMCA PARTNERSHIP

The University, the YMCA of Greater Rochester, and the Canandaigua Family YMCA have entered into a partner-

ship, offering membership discounts to employees.
