Industry Split

The public sector is the largest tech anddigital employer in Wellington, making up51% of employers in the capital in comparisonto 44% of private sector employers and 5% ofnot-for-profit and social enterpriseemployers.

Software Development tops the list of skills indemand by employers followed by BusinessAnalysis and Project Management. This is a stark contrast from last year whenAgile debuted at the top of the most indemand skills list and Data/Databaseprofessionals at number four which showsthat Wellington employers may be lesseningtheir digital requirements.

Skills in Demand

Wellington's median tech base salaryincreased by 5% which secured their positionas the highest paying region with the mediansalary being $100,000. Meanwhile, themedian contracting rate remained stable at$100/hour. The median digital base salary had a veryslight increase of 0.3% to $91,500 which alsosolidified Wellington's position as the highestpaying region for digital professionals.

We began compiling informationfor this report before the wide-reaching effects of the Covid-19pandemic began to impact New

Zealand.

Some predictions see NewZealand’s unemployment rate

reaching double digits, howeverthe impact on Wellington’s tech

sector is not yet clear, asorganisations move to offset thisimpact through innovation and

embracing new ways of working.

While we are faced with thesedifficult and new economic

challenges – the way we reactand move forward will definewho the future leaders in thetechnology industry will be.

Over the last four years there has been a steady rise in employers stating that theyfind it harder to source tech

and digital talent.

Currently, 44% of Wellingtonemployers say it is harder to

source tech and digitaltalent compared to a year

ago; this is a 4% increase fromlasts year's report (40%), up

13% from 2018's report (27%).
