1 Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce
Guest EditorialGrowth and Progress Abound!By Marie Mosley, City of Kennewick
The signs of growth and progress are all around us and demonstrating that there is no slowing down. The local economy for the City of Kennewick and the Tri-Cities region continues to be a bright spot in our state and draw lots of attention to our region. Many still want to know, what the secret to our success is. Well, it is no secret that we have great businesses, low unemployment and an engaged community. Additionally, Council vision and strategic policy decisions have positioned us well for the future and we have exciting projects underway. Some of the major highlights in 2017 include:
• Bob Olson Parkway - A huge celebration is coming as we will be completing the final phase of the Bob Olson Parkway this summer. This has been a top priority for Council and is a tremendous transportation accomplishment for not only Kennewick but the entire region – improving access and connectivity between Highway 240 and 395 that will also significantly spur new economic development activity.
• 20 Year Comprehensive Plan - Kennewick’s population is expected to grow by 33,754 new residents by 2037. Kennewick's Comprehensive Plan serves as a blueprint for the future. It helps guide decisions on land use, transportation, housing, economic development, sustainability and the environment. The City has been receiving public input and will be adopting a 10-year update to the plan.
• Criminal Justice Sales Tax – We will continue with implementation by hiring 4 new officers in 2017, for a total of 15 new police officers funded with criminal justice sales tax. We will also be starting a police cadet training program for candidates between the ages of 18-21 to prepare for eligibility to become entry level officers.
• Reconnecting to the Waterfront – Efforts to develop a brighter, bolder and stronger “sense of place” includes our partnership with the Port of Kennewick on Phase I of the Columbia Gardens Wine Village. 2017 will see the streetscape and the wine effluent pre-treatment system completed. And building on that momentum, we will begin the implementation of Phase II in partnership with the Port & Columbia Basin College – Culinary Arts using Rural County Capital Funds and developing infrastructure.
• Vista Field - A master plan to develop Vista Field into a regional hub will be proposed by the Port of Kennewick. The community’s voice will continue to be heard through this process and the City will continue to be a partner with the Port.
Benjamin Franklin once said, “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” Growth and progress is continuing and we are grateful to all of our businesses, residents, and community partners who make it happen!

When the Tri-City Americans first took the ice in 1988, it was the start of a Tri-Cities sports tradition. Over the last 29 years, millions of fans have experienced the excitement of the Americans hockey. “Hockey……here? In the desert?” This was a common response in the Columbia Basin as area residents learned that the WHL’s New Westminster Bruins would be relocated to the Tri-Cities for the 1988-1989 season. With the team came the brisk construction of a new, multi-purpose venue that would serve as—and remains—the team’s home ice. Tri-City Americans hockey was a rousing success, with near nightly sellouts through the first several seasons. Over the years, numerous Americans players have made the move to the NHL and become household names for hockey fans worldwide. Players like Olie Kolzig, Stu Barnes, Daymond Langkow, Scott Gomez, Carey Price and Brandon Carlo got their start right here in the Tri-Cities. Join us for February’s Business After Hours with the Tri-City Americans on Wednesday, February 15 from 5-7 pm! Free to attend, this event will provide a laidback networking environment followed by a fun night of hockey! Light appetizers and lemonade will be provided and a no-host bar will be available from 5:30-7 pm in the Charter Spectrum Lounge. Every Tri-City Regional Chamber Member in attendance will receive one free ticket to the game later that night when Americans take on the Red Deer Rebels at 7 pm.

In March, the Tri-City Regional Chamber joined the Washington State STEM Education Foundation, Mid-Columbia STEM Network and Washington STEM in Olympia to advocate for STEM education in the Tri-Cities. Our region continues to be a national leader in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics – education thanks to the ongoing efforts of our school districts, teachers and business community. The group met with our local legislators to urge their continued support for STEM education, as well as new investments in programs for career connected learning that will give more Tri-Cities kids opportunities to pursue careers in STEM and skilled trades.
The Regional Chamber strongly supports efforts to strengthen STEM and Career Technical Education (CTE) to ensure our community and state has a skilled workforce to keep pace with the demands of economic growth. To learn more about the Regional Chamber’s Advocacy Priorities, visit www.tricityregionalchamber.com.

ETHICAL DECISION MAKING
First and foremost, attending a Business Ethics seminar does not mean you are unethical and need to be trained. Actually, people who attend business ethics training work hard to ensure they are operating ethically! So, do not let the title of the seminar dissuade you. This month’s Business Development University will explore attendees own personal code of ethics and how to maintain them in a challenging workplace. This very fun and highly interactive seminar will examine the foundation for ethical decision making, the benefits of running a business “ethically” and will explore the Ethical Triangle, a concept that can help businesses mitigate potential employee indiscretions!
