PREFACE
Wellness from fashion this is a topic for
clothing worn close to the skin like body and
legwear.
Besides the soft feeling on the skin, this is also
about the soothing and even healing effects.
More than that, perfumes too can be added to
these garments.

INTRODUCTION
Nobody would want to have scratchy or itchyfabrics on the skin, so all the clothes worn closeto the skin will be as soft and as smooth as
possible. Competition is high at all levels in the market,
therefore value addition proves to be a good andeffective market strategy.
Good looking and shapely, soothing andhealing, precluding bacteria proliferation fromsweating are the focal points in this area.

Several other factors can be considered:
The fibers usedThe knitted structures
The finishing of the fabric
The making up
The finishing of the final product including the

WELLNESS
FROM FIBERS
Regarding the fibers, there are severalcategories:
Classic soft fibers like silk, cotton, angora, cashmere and lambswool.
Classic manmade fibers from renewal resourceslike viscose (rayon) and cupro. Good example of
a brand for viscose is tencel.Spandex used in core spun yarns or plated as
naked yarns. A famous brand is Lycra.

New generation of mandmade fibres derived
from renewable resources like milk, corn and
algae. Cyarn for milk protein fibers, Ingeo forcorn fibers and and Seacell for fibers with
alginate.
Fibers with integrated ions like silver ions.
Another technology is covering the fiber with athin layer of silver.
Aloe Vera can be implemented into the fibrils of
the fibers. Cotton and micro fibers filled with
Aloe Vera are being used for blouses,
underwear and legwear. Some 30 household
washes can be done. However refill isnt
possible.

The fibers can be used as
100%, in intimate blends
within one thread of yarn or
as blends of several differentyarn ends in one yarn.
Another technique is to use
different yarns in weft and
warp respectively, feedingdifferent yarns to the circular
knits or the warp beams for
warp knitting.
It makes sense to blend
different fibers for enhancing
stability and care. Also, a
small amount of special
fibers like those with silver is
enough to get the optimumeffect.

FROM FINISHES
Many supplementary finishes can be added to
either the fabric or the finished body and
legwear.
Apart from dyeing and printing processes, there
could be immersion or coating with silver layersand cyclodextrines or micro capsules.
Silverhas bacteriostatic properties, which work
against odours emanating from proliferating
bacteria in sweat. Silver has also proven to be helpful in healing
wounds, for psoriasis and other skin problems.

CYCLODEXTRINES
Definition
Cyclodextrines can be described as micro or even nanobags containing all kind of substances: for instance aloe
Vera, gingko extract, alginate, perfumes or evenmedicines.
Cyclodextrines are produced from starch by means ofenzymatic conversion.
Application
Over the last few years, the use of cyclodextrines havebeen found in a wide range of applications in food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries as well asagriculture and environmental engineering.

How it works
Cyclodextrines deliver their content by and by incontact with the normal humid skin.
The effects of most of the cyclodextrinefinishings will last for some 20-30 householdwashes. A refill is possible in household washesby adding fragrant towels to the wash.
How it is produced
The strong ability of complexing fragrances canalso be used for a purpose: first dry, solid
cyclodextrin microparticles are exposed to acontrolled contact with fumes of activecompounds.
They are then added to fabric or paper products.

Such devices are capable of releasing
fragrances during ironing or when heated by
human body.
The heat from a clothes dryer releases the
fragrance into the clothing.

Comparison between micro capsules andcyclodextrines
Micro capsules -Garments with microcapsulesthat contain certain skin-pampering agents suchas vitamin E or scents such as lavender ororange oil are sold widely. The capsules are
made from a variety of materials that open andrelease their contents when rubbed, pressed orwarmed by body heat.
Wearing the garment and washing it reduces the
number of microcapsules, and the item loses isextra functions. To counter this, manufacturersrecently began offering consumers packets torefresh the supply of microcapsules. Thesepackets can be emptied onto the garment after
it's washed.

Cyclodextrines -Clothing with cyclodextrines isdifferent, and they fulfill two functions. They can
release not only scents and personal careproducts, they also can store unpleasant odourssuch as sweat or cigarette smoke, leaving sportcoats still wearable after a night out at the bar.
The body's moisture releases the active
ingredient. The same thing happens in thewashing machine, but the cyclodextrines are notdestroyed in the process and can be refilledafter every wash by spraying the garment with afavourite perfume. If the scent isn't wanted after
a period of time, the only thing required ismoistening the garment.
Cyclodextrines work the other way around whenit comes to sweat and tobacco smells. Theyencapsulate the scent and store it until the next
wash.

Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is basically a native plant of Africa.
It is also known as lily of the desert and plant ofimmortality due to its medicinal effects.
This plant has 96 percent of water content.
The leaf of this plant contains over 75 nutrientsand 200 active compounds such as 20 minerals,
18 amino acids and 12 vitamins.Advantages
Since historic times its versatile uses wererecognized. Starting from Cleopatras skin care
efforts, to Alexanders medical treatment to healhis wounded soldiers, it was used in a variety ofapplications.

The content of the plant helps in rejunuvatingthe skin cells, helps in the formation of healthy
skin and fights against skin damage. Innovations in the textile field have induced the
beneficial attributes of aloe vera in garments, which prevents ageing of the skin; rejunuvates
and revitalises skin cells, and keeps skin freefrom microbial infections.
Garments are made of a microfibre with an openmesh construction that improves the transport of
moisture to the skin.

Micro encapsulation technology helps to add aloevera in the fabrics creating endless possibilities inthe textile segment.
Production
Aloe Vera content is embedded into airtight andwaterproof micro capsules. These micro capsulesare miniature containers, manufactured with a
protective polymeric coating or melamine shell. These shells are able to protect its contents fromevaporation, and contamination until it is released.
The capsules are bonded with the fibres during theprocess when fabric is manufactured. The capsules
open when the fabric is touched or rubbed. When the garment is tailored, these capsules
remain as a part of the clothing. When the garmentis worn, the aloe vera in the garment is applied on
the skin in a regular basis. This tolerates atemperature of 130C.

Application
This type of fabric is mainly used in manufacturing
inner garments, as they are next to the skin. Apart from keeping the body warm; it also has
some additional functions like absorbing bad smell, and providing anti-bacterial features.
They are used in the manufacture of undergarments, stockings etc. This is more beneficial forthe making of infant wears.

Aloe Vera in the making ofleatherproducts
Leather has an internal fiber matrix structure in it.
Aloe Vera particles are put in a gel carrier and thisis induced in the internal fiber matrix of leather
gloves, and shoes. The gel carrier penetrates into
the internal fiber matrix and stays there.
They emerge from the inside surface of the leather
and come in contact with the skin of the wearer. It
remains in the fabric even after 100 machine
washes and at a temperature ranging from 30-40C.
Aloe Vera content helps to keep the skin feeling
soft and revitalized.

VITAMINS, MINERALS andALGAE
Another supplementary finishing technology that
can be used is to apply micro capsules containingthe perfume or any other substance.
They cannot be refilled hence losing their effectthrough time and washing.
A fibre with a substance that transforms intovitamin C when it comes in contact with skin hasbeen developed .
In another process, algae are combined withclothing fibres, and when the clothing is worn,
minerals, proteins and vitamins are released.

END PRODUCTS
Anti-MicrobialFabric As it is well known, silver has a natural ability to
inhibit the growth of microbes and has alreadybeen added to fibers to give a textileantibacterial properties.
A new product Polygiene, with treatment basedon very small amounts of natural silver salt canbe applied and permanently bonded into a textileor material.
Polygiene inhibits the growth of bacteria and asa result makes the fabric hygienic and odor free.
Other benefits are that it prolongs the lifetime ofthe fabric, since bacteria itself breaks downfibers, it decreases static electricity and has wide

applications for both medical purposes and active
sportswear products.
The product is also available for domestic use, as aspray suitable for shoes, gloves, helmets and other
active equipment.

Sunstroke Fabric
Sunstroke fabrics are designed to absorb UV rays
and block heat from the sun, thus protecting skin
and keeping the body upto 20% cooler in light.
The function works through a yarn made from
closely blended polyester with ceramic insulationparticles.
These fabrics meet the standard UV801 criteria
certifying the protective barrier to protect the skin,
even after numerous washes. Sunstroke fabrics also carry a label testifying
support in skin cancer research.

VitaEc Fabric
In another innovation to help protect the skin, an
innovative smart fabric has been developed. It can deliver health-preserving vitamins to the skin
as the fabric is worn.
Research has shown that vitamins E and C can
help protect those, who live in cities, against theeffects of exposure to ozone and nitrogen dioxidepollution and keep the skin young and healthy.
VitaEc, is a fabric, which could be made of cotton
or other cellulose material such as viscose or linen, containing molecules, which release vitamins onboth to the surface of the skin when the fabrics arebrushed against the body as they are worn, forinstance, in T-shirts, or when used in bed linen.
-

It is a highly technological material whichcontains vitamin, created forthe care and thewellness of the body. By coming intocontact with
the skin, VitaEc releases its vitamin, which fightagainst the formation of free radicals just at themoment when the ageing process of the skin starts.
The molecule contained in VitaEc succeeds in
getting through our skin, where it splits, so releasingits vitamin charge on all the surface with the materialis in contact with.
The beneficial effect of the cloth is constant andunlimited, thanks to new easy vitamin charges to bedissolved in water.
Since today it is possible to regenerate regularyall the skin of our body simply by wearing a T-shirt or by sleeping with special sheetscontaining vitamins.

PerfumedClothing
Garments with microcapsules that contain
certain skin-pampering agents like vitamin E orscents such as lavender or orange oil are soldwidely.
The capsules are made from a variety of
materials that open and release their contentswhen rubbed, pressed or warmed by body heat.
Disadvantage
Wearing the garment and washing it reduces the
number of microcapsules, and the item loses isextra functions.

The vitamins can be recharged in the cloth
while a special reload during washing, thus
ensuring unlimited and continual vitamin to
support the skin.

Knitted structures
The density of the meshes and 3-D effects have an
impact on moisture and heat management.
Fine and dense materials are smooth and pleasant
on the skin.
If moisture management matters then fabric with acoarser gauge with more dimensional effects like
ribs, piques etc, would be more appropriate.

DISADVANTAGES
Often naked elastane is added by plating singlejersey knits.
The advantage of price comes along with certaindisadvantages:
The process of plating elastane fibers requiresspecial care.
While cutting and sewing, the plated jerseystend to roll up at the edges and the elastanecould retract from the edges.
The seams could be a problem at the stage ofuse: under stress, the elastane could escapefrom the seam and retract from the edge leavingthe seam with a very weak and ugly look.

Very elastic fibers will need special tuning of the
thread feeding, i.e less tension.
During the process of manufacturing, the finishing
could change the grip of the textile, making it sticky.
The cyclodextrines are unstable when exposed to
heat; ironing, pressing or finishin in a tunnel coulddestroy them.
With handling, the finish could contact skin and
moisture and the finishing could wear off partly
before reaching the customer. Therefore, a finishon the readymade garment should be considered
as in case of bodywear and legwear.
