Wells County 4-H Dress Code NORTH DAKOTA 4-H DRESS CODE: All members participating in North Dakota State 4-H competitive events except Clothing Revue (Sew and Show, Buy and Show) will be neatly dressed and must wear a solid colored white, yellow, gray or green shirt/blouse with the 4-H emblem prominently displayed, and securely fastened, on the front. The objective of the 4-H Dress Code is to:

1. to promote a positive image of 4-H by using a consistent, identifiable appearance. The public will recognize a group dressed in similar fashion; and 2. to eliminate any real or perceived advantage or disadvantage in an activity caused by appearance.

The 4-H Dress Code as adopted by the Program Action Council is the only rule regarding dress enforced at state events. It was reviewed and revised by the North Dakota 4-H Policy Board on November 23, 2003 and refined effective February 3, 2005. Failure to comply with the dress code shall result in reduced premiums equivalent to one ribbon placing. In team competition, the penalty shall be a deduction of 25 points from the individual and team scores. The dress code remains in effect through the completion of the event and awards presentations. Shirts from the National 4-H Supply Service are considered appropriate provided they are solid colored white, yellow, gray or green and have only a 4-H emblem prominently displayed on the front. Shirts with the 4-H emblem can also be purchased by contacting your local county extension office. County or club names should not be on the shirts.

-All livestock and horse show participants will be neatly dressed and must wear a long sleeved white, button down shirt/blouse with the 4-H emblem prominently displayed, and securely fastened, on the front." -Horse exhibitors must wear properly fitted ASTM-SEI approved harness helmets for all mounted events (western hats are permitted for showmanship), western boots, blue or black colored jeans (dark colored), and a belt. Jewelry or ties are not permitted. Gloves are permitted only in English events. Failure to comply with helmet regulations will result in the youth not being able to participate in the show.

For reasons listed under objectives and/or for the safety of the exhibitors, the following is also recommended but not required:

-dark jeans/pants or skirts -protective shoes or boots when showing livestock -long sleeves when showing rabbits, poultry, small animals -dairy show - white jeans/pants are not required but are acceptable

In an effort to promote a professional appearance by 4-H members, it is recommended that the shirt/blouse be a crew neck t-shirt, polo shirt, or Henley-type. The emblem can be sewn, silk-screened, fused or securely fastened using Velcro type fastener or spray adhesive. Visible pins (safety, stick and straight) are not an acceptable method of attachment. If used, securely fasten all sides of the chevron/emblem with the pins on the inside of the garment. 4-H members should not wear short shorts or short skirts, shirts/tops that are low-cut nor allow the mid-riff to show or sleeveless. Shirts should be of sufficient length to be tucked into the pants/skirt. Ambassador shirts are acceptable for all county activities except livestock and horse. Cloverbud dress code is the same as for regular members; however the Cloverbud pin is worn in place of the 4-H patch. Contact the office if a pin is needed.

IMPORTANT STATIC JUDGING INFORMATION

Enclosed you will find:

Wells County Fair Handbook

Static Tags – this also includes tags for animal interviews.

Parking Pass – 2 for each livestock family

DO NOT BE LATE! It is important to be on time.

ABSENTEES- Exhibits are to be registered and arrive by 12:30 pm. Tag and absentee form must be

attached to each exhibit.

4-H DRESS REQUIRED. Basic dress is white, green, gray, or yellow top/dark bottoms with the 4-H patch or

cloverbud pin. Check dress code in the handbook. NO tank tops or short shorts! (see dress code section or state

fair book for more details)

TAGS MUST BE ATTACHED to the projects prior to checking in at the registration

desk. Please do this at home, not at the registration desk. It holds up the check in process if

tags are not attached. Make sure to keep the tag intact with the county portion on the

bottom. Tags will stay attached to exhibit when moving on to the state fair.

BRING YOUR UNUSED STATIC TAGS WITH YOU. Makes registration much

faster. Contact the office with those exhibits that will be dropped.

If you have more than one project to take to the same project area, take them at the same time.

Friends and family are not allowed in the building during judging. They will be asked to leave.

Read the requirements for projects in the state fair book. If rules are not followed, you will be dropped

one ribbon placing. Make sure everything is in order before you come to interview judging!

During the interview process, the judge will determine how much work the 4-H’er put into their project. If

someone other than the 4-H’er did all or most of the work, the judge has the option of dropping them a ribbon

placing.

AMBASSADORS – please check all schedules for your information.

WORK SCHEDULES- If you are unable to work your designated shifts, it is up to you to notify the specific

committee and find your own replacement.

COMPUTER RELATED PROJECTS: If your project must be viewed on a computer, please bring your own

equipment to view.

ATTENTION LIVESTOCK INTERVIEWS

Animal Interviews will be held during static judging. The exception is poultry, rabbit, and dog interviews.

These will still be held at the designated show time.

Tags are enclosed to attach to your books or record sheets. Bring your project books or record sheets with you

for the interview judging.
