St John of God Hospital Subiaco

Wellvisions is produced by St John of God Subiaco Hospital – a division of St John of God Health Care.

Well of the PastDid you know that there was a lot of criticism about the Sisters’ decision to build a hospital on our present Subiaco site, saying it was too far away from the city. What a wise decision it was!

What our patients say about us“From the moment I rang the delivery suite, to the moment we departed with our beautiful little boy, we have been very impressed with everyone at the Hospital. We are incredibly appreciative of the wealth of knowledge your team has.”

“To laugh often and much; to win the

respect of intelligent people and the

affection of children... to leave the

world a better place... to know even one

life has breathed easier because you

have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Hospital has held a number of important celebrations over the last three months, including the sixth biennial St John of God Subiaco Hospital Medical Tribute Dinner. Held on Saturday 28th April at Burswood Entertainment Complex, the evening honoured eight retired specialists (one in memoriam) who have generously and tirelessly given so much to the Hospital. A great night was had by all who attended and paid tribute to the wonderful dedication and enduring work of the Hospital’s highly skilled specialists.

In May each year we celebrate two of the most important days on our Hospital calendar – International Midwives Day and International Nurses Day. These special occasions celebrate and recognise our caregivers who give so much to the Hospital, patients and doctors. We are extremely proud and appreciative of their work and dedicated efforts. We also celebrated National Volunteer Week during the month of May and special congratulations must go to Sonia Tanham who was nominated for the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award. Read more about Sonia’s inspiring story on page 11 and thank you to our valuable volunteers who continue to generously donate their time and skills to the Hospital.

We were very proud to open the doors to Australia’s first ever accommodation service – Horizon House Dianella – solely focused on supporting homeless young women prepare for the birth of their baby and assisting them to find a secure home. The House opened at the end of May and provides a safe and caring home for up to ten young women aged 16 – 22 whilst supporting them through their journey into motherhood. A big thank you must go to our caregivers who generously gave their time to prepare the House for the first arrivals, and I would strongly encourage everyone to keep an eye out for further opportunities to be involved in this vital new service.

Another big event coming up on the Hospital’s calendar is the Annual Ball, held on Saturday 28th July at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Don’t forget to buy your ticket by emailing [email protected] and join us for a “Night with the Stars” – as always it promises to be a great night of fun and laughter.

Warm Regards,

The month of May saw celebrations across the Hospital for our midwives and nurses to acknowledge the dedicated work they perform each and every day. International Midwives Day takes place on 5th May, and was celebrated with a special afternoon tea organised for our midwifery caregivers. The maternity areas were adorned with pink and silver balloons to mark the occasion and the caregivers used the opportunity to raise much needed funds to assist the expecting young mothers at Horizon House Dianella.

The Hospital then celebrated International Nurses Day on 12th May, and highlighted the fact that we are honoured to have nurses representing over 25 countries amongst our caregivers. From Ethiopia to Burma, the Philippines and Canada, the Hospital is proud to welcome a variety of nurses

from the furthest corners of the world, who each make a valuable contribution to the high level of nursing care.

Celebrations included a service in the Chapel, where Godfrey Gomba, a Staff Development Nurse from Zimbabwe, spoke of his experiences working at the Hospital for the past four and a half years.

“As a nurse you are able to stretch out your hands and help someone at their most vulnerable moment in life, helping to make a difference not just to the patient, but also their friends and family, which I find very rewarding,” Godfrey said.

Caregivers also enjoyed the huge boxes of chocolates delivered to the wards and a raffle was held to raise funds to support the St John of God Health Care nursing program in East Timor, raising over $800.

Ms Chris Hanna, Director of Nursing and Midwifery says International Nurses Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the difference our nurses make; many who have joined us from around the world, and we are privileged to be able take advantage of this diversity and mix of different cultures to provide all round, excellent care to our patients.

Jill Kelly, previously Clinical Nurse Consultant, Acute Pain Service, has become the first nurse within the private sector in Australia to be appointed as a Nurse Practitioner in Acute Pain. One of only three people throughout Australia to have achieved this position, Jill will provide an advanced level of nursing care such as reviewing patients after surgery, prescribing medications and providing follow up care for patients attending the Hospital’s post-discharge Pain Clinic.

The passionate nurse and mum of five began her career as an enrolled nurse in 1988 at Swan Districts Hospital, and worked at St John on God Hospital Murdoch for 12 years before joining the team at Subiaco in 2006.

Jill is now a key member of the Acute Pain Service and has completed over ten years of study leading up to her endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner, including a Bachelor of Nursing, Master of Nursing by coursework and most recently, a Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner).

According to Jill, becoming a Nurse Practitioner gives her the best of both worlds; allowing her to use her wealth of clinical expertise as she works alongside the Hospital’s specialists, as well as continuing to teach and mentor nurses while still enjoying the interaction with patients.

“Being a Nurse Practitioner will allow me to be the link between our nursing caregivers and the medical consultants, providing holistic and ongoing care to our patients,” Jill said.

Jill acknowledges the wonderful support from her mentors and the entire medical and nursing community at the Hospital, as well as the contribution of the Sisters of St John of God Fellowship, for helping her achieve this appointment and hopes it will the lead the way for fellow nurses to follow a similar path.

What inspires us

“I am passionate about patients and

the quality of their care, and becoming a Nurse Practitioner allows me

to have the best of both worlds”

The sixth biennial St John of God Subiaco Hospital Medical Tribute Dinner was held on Saturday 28th April at Burswood Entertainment Complex - honouring eight retired specialists (one in memoriam) who have generously and tirelessly given so much to the Hospital. The evening is about paying tribute to the wonderful dedication and enduring work of the Hospital’s highly skilled specialists, whose expertise and contribution to medicine and the community are essential elements of what makes the Hospital

a leader in the health care industry in Western Australia.

The evening commenced with formal tributes and presentations about the retired specialists, including a special memorial to the late Professor Tony McCartney - Australia’s first specifically trained gynaecologic oncologist in treating cancer of the female reproductive system. Tony’s wife Jacinta spoke on his behalf and reflected proudly of the many accolades her husband achieved throughout his career. Many of the honourees spoke fondly of their early years at the Hospital and took the opportunity to recognise the Sisters of St John of God for their pioneering efforts and inspirational achievements over the years.

Throughout the evening guests dined on Burswood’s delicious menu and listened to jazz music by renowned Perth band Hip Mo’ Toast, who performed a repertoire of the classics for guests to enjoy the music and dancing.

A great night was had by all who attended and the Hospital is enormously proud of the lifelong achievements of these specialists. We are honoured that they have had such a close and passionate association with the Hospital throughout their impressive careers.

On Thursday 10th May 2012, St John of God Subiaco Hospital, in affiliation with the University of Western Australia (UWA), officially launched the Anaesthesia Research Unit – the first of its kind in a private hospital throughout Australia. Facilitated by Anaesthetist Dr Joe Pracilio, the Hospital’s Director of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, the unit will provide vital funds for anaesthesia research.

According to Dr Pracilio, in recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of research projects being done in both the private and public

healthcare sectors. The anaesthesia team at the Hospital have a wealth of experience, and will provide the perfect platform for the Research Unit.

‘In WA we have a group of excellent Anaesthesia researchers who are already well published. It is the logical next step for those researchers to be part of our Hospital’, Dr Pracilio said.

‘I have no doubt this is an exciting new venture for St John of God Subiaco Hospital and I am extremely grateful for the support provided’.

The launch event was attended by over 70 guests, who listened to addresses by Dr Michael Stanford, CEO of St John of God Health Care, Dr Shane Kelly, CEO of St John of God Subiaco Hospital, Winthrop Professor Ian Puddey, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at UWA and Dr Pracilio.

Other guest speakers included Dr Dennis Hayward, Professor Paul Myles, Professor Tim Short, Professor Stephan Schug, Professor Michael Paech and Professor Britta Regli–von Ungern-Sternberg.

For further enquiries about the Anaesthesia Research Unit, please contact Dr Pracilio on (08) 9382 9150 or email [email protected]

Safety Success one year onImproved Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) performance is a significant objective for St John of God Subiaco Hospital. In order to help ensure that everyone who enters our environment is kept safe, the OH&S Department launched a new workplace safety campaign, ‘Step up for Safety” in March 2011.

Last month the team celebrated a successful first year by holding a luncheon to thank the managers and OH&S representatives who have supported the campaign. CEO Dr Shane Kelly expressed his appreciation for their efforts by speaking about the amazing achievements in the first year such as:

• Significant reductions in injury rates – the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate in June 2010 was 11.74 and it is currently 5.8 - the lowest this rate has been in 10 years.

• Marked increases in positive activities, such as hazard reporting, that are undertaken to prevent injuries in the workplace. There have been more than 600 hazards reported so far this financial year.

• In June 2011 an internal Occupational Safety and Health Management System Audit was undertaken by other Divisional OH&S practitioners. An outstanding audit score of 96% compliance was achieved.

• An increased Hospital wide awareness of incidents that have occurred and what can be done to prevent them, thanks to the introduction of departmental notice boards that include current and specific information about OH&S performance. An OH&S recognition scheme dedicated to rewarding and recognising caregivers who make significant contributions to workplace safety has also played a big part in promoting the OH&S message.

Recent incidents of caregiver injury demonstrate we still have some significant improvements to make in this area, so please remember to ‘Step Up for Safety’ and help keep the Hospital as injury free as possible.

Recent statistics have shown that there is a chronic shortage of supported accommodation services for young pregnant women and their babies in Perth, with many women struggling to find safe, stable accommodation.According to the King Edward Memorial Hospital Adolescent Clinic, they worked with 160 young women throughout 2010 - 2011, 60% of whom did not have secure living arrangements and needed to find a safe environment to raise their new baby.

To help combat this growing need, St John of God Subiaco Hospital recently opened the doors to Australia’s first ever accommodation service – Horizon House Dianella – solely focused on supporting homeless young women prepare for the birth of their baby and assisting them to find a secure home.

Horizon House Dianella provides a safe and caring home for up to ten young women aged 16 – 22 and supports them throughout their antenatal period with a full-time social worker, access to live-in carers 24 hours a day and the opportunity to take part in programs such as parent education and life skills.

Managed as part of St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s commitment to Social Outreach and Advocacy Services, Horizon House Dianella opened on the 22nd May thanks to a partnership with Pregnancy Assistance, Hills Community Support Group and the Department of Child Protection. The service has also been supported by a significant financial contribution from the Bendat Family and additional funding from Lotterywest.

The Dianella house is one of ten accommodation services run by St John of God Horizon House based on the model of providing care and support in a family environment, but the first to specialise in support for young women during their journey into motherhood.

Dr Shane Kelly, the Hospital’s CEO, said the Hospital is very pleased to be able to provide essential care to young women and give them the support they need to give their babies the best possible start in life.”

“The service draws upon professional help here at the Hospital, as well as the unique Horizon House model of care and intensive support, which we believe is invaluable for the young mums living in the homes,” Dr Kelly said.

Consisting of two adjacent homes, the Bendat House supports the women during pregnancy and preparing for childbirth, after which they move into

Miriam House with their new baby while they are assisted to find stable, independent living arrangements.

According to Joshua Nipps, the Hospital’s Social Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator, there was a high number of expressions of interest before the House even opened its doors and there has been no shortage of referrals for young women to enter the house.

“The overwhelming demand for accommodation since we have opened the House really highlights the need for a service of this nature and we are grateful to the many agencies that have come together to help make this a reality,” Josh said.

Subiaco caregivers generously gave up their own time in the weeks leading up to the opening to prepare the House for the first residents. One group of caregivers held a weekend busy-bee preparing the gardens, creating a BBQ/outdoor lounge area and sustainable vegetable garden, whilst another team set up the bedrooms and living areas.

Caregivers are encouraged to be actively involved in supporting Horizon House Dianella, through fundraising efforts and the opportunity to donate your time or skills.

There are approximately 5,000 children born with cleft lip and/or palate each year in the Philippines, yet very few families can afford to pay to have surgery performed on their children.Operation Rainbow Australia Ltd (ORAL) was established in Perth in 1995, and has been conducting surgical missions each year to help these children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to have this life changing surgery. At each mission, hundreds of children arrive to seek treatment, many who have travelled several days to be seen, and these trips from international organisations allow 3000 children to be treated each year.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital began providing the funding for the yearly ORAL mission to Cebu, the second largest island in the Philippines, in 2010 and covers the costs for medications, instruments and anaesthetic machines to be sent to the

Philippines. The Hospital also provides community service leave for caregivers volunteering to take part in the mission.

The ORAL team recently returned from their latest mission to Cebu, which took place on the 13th – 18th May. A number of doctors and caregivers from the Hospital took part in the trip, including Plastic Surgeons Mr Mark Hanikeri and Mr Tim Hewitt, Anaesthetist Dr Andrew Olney and nursing caregivers Jill Brady and Peta Sherriffs.

According to Mr Hanikeri, the impact of having corrective surgery for cleft lip and palate on the individual, their family and their community cannot be over emphasized. Until their lips are repaired, many of these children are not allowed to go to school, causing them to remain illiterate and destined to remain social outcasts.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see their faces, and know that the small sacrifice we make in going on these missions has such a lasting and significant effect on the lives of those whom we treat,” Mr Hanikeri said.

Dr Olney reported that it was a very successful trip, with the team putting in long hours to treat as many children as safely possible and overall 79 children received operations and 105 surgical procedures were undertaken.

“It was a fantastic mission – we already have plans to return to the same hospital in the Philippines next year, and we look forward to having increased involvement from Subiaco’s nursing caregivers,” Dr Olney said.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital celebrated National Volunteer Week 2012 on the 14th – 18th May, taking the opportunity to thank over 155 volunteers who work and assist in a variety of roles including transport service, ambulatory care, administration and general wards. A big highlight of this year’s celebrations was when one of Subiaco’s very own volunteers, Sonia Tanham, was recognised for her years of dedication by being nominated in the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Awards. Sonia has been a permanent fixture in the volunteer community at the Hospital for the past 29 years, and in addition to coordinating the volunteers who make knitted goods for the neo-natal unit, Sonia heads up the 18-strong fundraising team. During Sonia’s time at the Hospital she has

been involved in fundraising activities that have raised well in excess of $300,000, which has been donated to the Hospital’s Social Outreach projects.

The winners were announced at a gala dinner held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Wednesday 16th May, and despite not winning the award, Sonia had a fantastic night out with her fellow volunteer caregivers. The Hospital was also the proud sponsor of the Excellence in Volunteer Management Award.

The celebrations continued throughout the week, with all of the Hospital’s volunteers invited to enjoy a Captain Cook cruise up the Swan River and luncheon on board. According to the Hospital’s Volunteer Coordinator, Joshua Nipps, fifty volunteers attended and it was a lovely opportunity to recognise the dedication and care our valuable volunteers provide.

‘It was great to say thank you to all of our hard-working volunteers during Volunteer Week, and to recognise the vital role that they play in the Hospital community,’ Joshua said.

Managing your cholesterol with dietMaking changes to your diet plays an essential role in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. An excessive amount of cholesterol in the blood is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, so it is important to consider your diet and make necessary dietary changes to lower cholesterol when it is high.

Dietary cholesterol is present only in foods of animal origin, such as meat, poultry, fish and shellfish, eggs, whole milk and other dairy products. Cholesterol is not found in foods of

plant origin, which include vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

High blood cholesterol, with a high level of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), can be caused by eating foods high in saturated fat such as fatty meats, cheese, cream and chocolate. It is important to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood in order to increase your “good” high-density lipoproteins (HDL) levels.

Other lifestyle behaviours such as weight loss, taking regular exercise and stopping smoking can also significantly reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Ingredients • 2 cloves garlic,

roughly chopped

• 1⁄4 cup macadamia nuts, toasted

• 100g baby rocket leaves

• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

• 2 tablespoons lemon juice

• 1⁄4 cup salt reduced vegetable stock

• 2 tablespoons lemon rind

• 400g dried wholemeal penne pasta

Method1. To make pesto, place garlic and

macadamia nuts in a food processor. Process until finely chopped. Add rocket, oil, lemon juice and stock. Process until almost smooth.

2. Cook the penne according to packet directions. Drain penne reserving two tablespoons of cooking water.

3. Return hot penne and water to the pan. Add pesto and lemon rind and toss over low heat until well combined. Spoon into bowls and serve with rocket leaves.

HBF Run for a ReasonAlmost 130 Subiaco caregivers donned their running shoes and joined the 20,000 Western Australians who took on the HBF Run for a Reason on Sunday 27th May. Despite a chilly start it was a beautiful sunny day and caregivers enjoyed a BBQ with their family and friends in the St John of God Health Care corporate marquee at the conclusion of the run.

Paintings in PaediatricsChildren undergoing surgery at the Hospital’s Paediatric Ward can now find the experience a little more enjoyable thanks to a series of six paintings completed by John XX111 College 2010 graduate and top art student Samantha Harrison.

Titled “The Chase”, the six paintings follow a unique story aimed to distract and calm children as they go into surgery and brighten up the Paediatric area. The first painting is in the Paediatric Admissions area, followed by four in the ceilings along the route travelled by the children as they go into theatre, and the last painting is in the recovery room.

The commissioned works were organised by David Ramsay, Clinical Nurse Manager of the Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), who worked with John XX111 College Senior Art Teacher Debra Ellery and Curtin Art student Samantha Harrison to develop the creative design.

Soup PatrolThis year some 50 Subiaco caregivers have signed up to take part in the Red Cross Soup Patrol. The Perth service runs seven nights a week, 365 days a year and relies on volunteers to deliver hot soup and bread to Perth’s homeless community. The service also operates at designated stops in Fremantle, Bunbury, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie and provides over 38,000 meals annually. After recently going on her first soup run, Stacey Campbell, Acting Marketing & PR Manager, said that the recipients were grateful for the service and while some were very thankful for a decent meal, others just enjoyed being able to have someone to talk to. “It felt great to be able to provide some warm hearty soup to people who would otherwise go hungry, especially during a chilly winter’s night, and I would definitely encourage others to get involved,” Stacey said.

Graduates Help out CanTeenCanTeen, an Australian organisation supporting young people living with cancer, recently had some new helpers thanks to a new partnership with St John of God Subiaco Hospital. CanTeen’s mission is to support, develop and empower young people living with cancer, and holds a wide range of camps and programs so that their members can share their experiences, make great friends... and of course, have fun!

Facilitated by the Learning and Organisational Development Department, volunteers from the Hospital’s graduate group of registered nurses have been attending the camps, spending time with the kids and making sure they are having a great experience. The Hospital looks forward to providing further support to this very worthy cause.
