Duty... Honor... Country... For more than a century Wentworth Military Academy has been a

part of the Lexington area. The history in the City of Lexington is very rich. A decisive battle of the Civil War was fought in the countryside of Lexington. Since 1880, Wentworth Military Academy has been a part of that tradition. The academy turns cadets into proud alumni each year. The academy instills a sense of duty, honor, and country into the cadets. Original the academy was a boys' school. Two years after its birth, in 1882, Wentworth was changed to a military academy. The academy was based on Virginia Military Institute. From its birth, cadets have had certain rules and regulations, and an honor code, which they live by. Time may have changed the uniforms, buildings, and curriculum; but tradition and leadership is still the foundation of the academy.

I am pleased and proud to have the opportunity to return to Wentworth where I was provided such a great start to my career in the U.S. Army.

This is an opportunity to partially repay the debt I owe to this great institution and the staff and faculty who worked so hard to train me when I was a cadet. My objective is to insure that the opportunities afforded by a Wentworth education continue on for future generations. I have been made to feel most welcome by the 122nd Corps and the Class of 2002, and I wish each of you great success as you continue your education beyond Wentworth.

Another lesson learned by the corps. Photo by Jamiah Edwards

The Commandant of Cadets exercises direct supervision over the Corps of Cadets in all Academy activities and is responsible to the Academy President/Superintendent. This encompasses but is not limited to the following areas: organization, control, discipline, training, health and welfare of the Corps. Along with the above-mentioned areas, the Commandant supervises barracks life, Cadet personal appearance, uniform conformity and maintenance, personal hygiene and Cadet conduct. The Commandant must also stay abreast of each Cadet's academic status as well as personal issues in their lives, which involve family members off the campus proper. With all the responsibilities mentioned, the Corps of Cadets recognizes first his responsibility as the Academy's enforcer of the Rules and Regulations of Wentworth Military Academy and Junior College. Each Cadet and the parents/legal guardian receives a copy of the Cadet Handbook, Roll Call (which was updated Summer of 2001 by the Commandant). All WMAJC Rules and Regulations are contained in this handbook. The Commandant of Cadets utilizes the policies and procedures of the Academy, as well as his Chain of Command in regard to matters of discipline. This is to ensure an impartial and equitable conclusion, which is in the best interest of our Cadets.

HEADOUARTERS COMPANY

Headquarters company led by C/CPT Nathaniel Oster march through Lexington for the Homecoming parade

Headquarters Company: Headquarters Company, commonly referred to

simply as HQ, represents an example of the Corps ideals. HQ consists of three Honor Units, Color Guard, Honor Guard and the Band. Separated in a way from the rest of the corps by living by themselves, HQ is an example of cadets in charge of the corps to the best. With little extra overseeing and a sense of trust and confidence from both faculty and staff, HQ performs outstandingly both on and off the Wentworth Military Academy Campus.

This year's HQ company consists of approximately 50 people, making it the largest company on campus, and providing the largest Band and Color Guard in several years. From Hickman Hall, the home of Headquarters, many times can be heard the sounds of musical instruments in preparation for the company responsibility as a showpiece of Wentworth. Most other times, though, you will hear the sound of cadets who enjoy being a part of their unit and having fun with their HQ family

I had preconceived notions of those Bravo guys to come in; but over this first semester, all these stereotypes came down one after another. There have been our share of incidents and hiccups, but with the most dedicated cadre and the best group of guys, we will be the victors of campus - Basore or not."

To my sons ... Bravo Company — FALL IN ... while we're all here together for the last time, I'd like to say a few things. Remember what we did here. Yeah, you're reading your yearbook and who knows where you are right now? Maybe a cadet in the 123rd Corps, or a young professional lawyer ten years from now. Remember back to the year we spent together — the good days and the few bad ones. I will look back upon my company, our company, and say that possibly the last Bravo Company was a great Bravo Company. Our stay together is over, but our smiles will never leave. It's been my pleasure to be your commander. Don't ever forget the discipline and self-control that you have learned here in the always great and wonderful Bravo Company. Now go and do great things and represent your academy well. — FALL OUT ... C/CPT Sean Cochran.

IN CONCLUSION...

Dear Echo,

"Too easy gentlemen, too easy." I want you all to know that it is really too easy for you to find success and happiness. I know that you may be thinking that I am just saying this stuff because it's a yearbook and all, but I ensure that everything I am saying is nothing but the truth. You have shown me that you are capable, competent, and hard working guys. We have come from all corners of the world for all different reasons. However, when we formed Echo Company, we immediately created something special. We have overcome and developed so much that I can not even begin to describe what has been accomplished this year. I know as well as any of you that Echo is the best and always will be. Every one of you have altered your lifestyles to this environment and have adapted to this system. For some of you this task was not effortless, but with help from the first sergeant and others the mission has been accomplished. Thank you for this opportunity; I have learned so much. I will always remember Echo and all of your hard work. Good luck, and don't forget your values, L.D.R.S.H.I.P. Take with you anything good that you have gained from this place and hold on to it, use it.

Tango Titans:

It's been a long year, but I am confident when I say that it has been the best one of my life. I have been extremely proud of the way you all have pulled together since the first day you arrived on campus. There have been some hard times, as well as a constantly changing cadre, yet it still amazes me how hard you all have worked this year.

Of course, there were a lot of good times, too. Bowling, Secret Santa, Military Ball decorating, and roller-skating are just a few of the memories from this year.

Some of you will return to Wentworth, some will be in the military, some will be civililans, but for the rest of your lives, you will be Tango Titans. Never forget this place, or the bonds you have formed with your Tango sisters.

It was an honor and a privilege to be your commanding officer.

As Tango Company's First Sergeant for the 122nd Corps of Cadets, I feel that we had a great year. Yeah! It's true that we have had some hard times, some problems, and some late nights, but everything has always gotten accomplished, and the problems were always taken care of. Like I always say, "In order to get something or accomplish anything worthwhile, you have to go through something."

I feel that our cadre and our girls have worked extremely hard to perform to the max and to excel to the highest peak. We have had a great year, girls. I want to thank you all.

BATTALION STAFF Made up of cadets from different walks of life, thrown together in a blender, turned on and told to turn liquid into solid. "It is your responsibility to ensure the corps are where they are supposed to be in a timely and motivated fashion. Your company commanders are to be informed at all times of everything that is going on and all the changes that are being made. Oh and by the way, they must be fed, receive their meds, be in clean clothes and well disciplined. It's up to you and the company commanders to make this happen. Here's the plan. Make it happen. Thus the year begins.

Gifts exchanged , friendships given and snatched away. Christmas to staff t h i s y e a r is one reached with much work and dedication. Many obstacles have to be overcome such as distinguishing between professional and personal relationships. Once the line is drawn, C h r i s t m a s comes faster and work is easier. We look past Christmas to what the rest of the year holds for us. Thanks for the gifts and lessons taught and well learned.

Left: "You know what, CPT Robinson? We finished?" states C/MAJ Cavi lena Notz . "Yes ma'am, we got hit in the face, but we kept going," replies C/CPT Lala Robinson. The mess hall dining tables are places of great reflection, disagreements and truce making for battalion staff this year.

LTC Michael Byrd many times shares a laugh, an encouraging word and even a stern look with staff members. Today he shares lunch with C/CSM Fritz Beck, C/CPT Jeremiah Watson and BO Aboulrabman AL-Othman.

Concentration such as C/MAJ Dustin Berry uses here is the only thing that keeps us focused.

"Do you think we will be able to finish strong?" asks C/LTC Shawn Dillon. "I don't know, Dillon; we still have 15 days and a wake up left," answers C/CSG Fritz Beck.

Notz, Robinson, Beck, Goodman, Heisler, Dillon, Watson, Edwards, and Jaslow come together to cheer at a pep rally. We also cheer on the coming of the end and the future of the corps. With everything serious, there needs to be a little fun. 58

Wentworth high school cadets attend JROTC class for two, 50-minute sessions and participate in a two-hour Leadership Lab weekly. The current curriculum is made up of several sub courses designed to promote the development of positive self-esteem, good citizenship, self-confidence, technology awareness and personal responsibility. The courses include instruction in first aid, drug abuse prevention, leadership, time management, communication, career opportunities, military history, personal financial management skills, map reading, safety, values, and various contemporary issues. Additionally, the JROTC department sponsors five different extra-curricular activities available to cadets in good academic standing: the Cannon Crew, the Color Guard, the Honor Guard, the Drill Team and the Marksmanship Team. Participation in these activities is open to cadets who desire to develop additional skills and aptitudes while contributing additionally to the cadet life at the Academy. Participating cadets are typically those who exemplify the highest degree of honor, pride, self-discipline, and integrity and a high sense of selfless service. The weekly Leadership Labs provide an additional leader development opportunity for high school cadets. The JROTC segment of the Wentworth Corps of Cadets is organized into a student-led JROTC Battalion. The battalion plans, organizes, coordinates and executes various activities. Cadet leaders train newer cadets to perform close order drill and ceremonies, manual of arms, physical fitness and other skills. The JROTC staff continually and closely evaluate cadet performance, both in the leadership and "followership" roles. The JROTC Program in general and the Leadership Labs in particular provide an unparalleled opportunity for cadets to lead and to be held accountable for the operational performance of their subordinate cadets and unit.

62 C/LTC Jeremiah Watson, battalion commander and C/CPT Julie Thanki, battalion adjutant; hold many awards earned by the JROTC corps.

Despite many setbacks this year has seen, we as a corps have ended strong. We had many changes in the cadet structure, from Battalion Commanderon down; yet you all did a wonderful job. Not only did you maintain but also improved the standards set forth by last year's JROTC Corps. We are an Honor Unit with Distinction so continue to wear our gold star and be proud to hold your head high. Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you return for a cadre position next year not only in the JROTC Corps, but also the 123rd Corps of Cadets.

The JROTC cadets take a long break after working in the woods, making Perkins trail and building out of wood and mud with their fellow cadets. These types of activities have really brought a unity among the corps and are a great foundation upon which to build everlasting friendships.

Senior Reserve Of f i ce rs Tra in ing Corps

The Senior ROTC department plays a major role in recruiting college students to attend Wentworth Military Academy. They hand out 2 + 2, MJC (Military Junior College) and campus-based scholarships to those interested in one day becoming officers in the US Army. To qualify one must graduate from high school with a 2.5 gpa, have a GED or complete Show Me Challenge (a GED program available for Missouri residents). When the application process is finished, the prospective student takes a DODMERB, Department of Defense Medical Exam Review Board, which is an extensive physical because cadet command doesn't want broke people. After passing the physical, the cadet attends a paid camp called Camp Lead, formally known as Basic Camp, at Ft Knox, Kentucky, to validate the scholarship. Upon graduation the cadet has time either to accept or deny the opportunity to attend Wewo.

Physical Training

Academic The Forefront

The SROTC scholarships require that all contracted cadets must maintain a 2.5 or better. In order to help students maintain this GPA, the ROTC department has designed a study hall where cadets can study quietly and/or receive help from other classmates.

RED DRAGON ATHLETICS

Athletic Director, MAJ Bob Gibson, says, "My two years of athletics participation prepared me physically and mentally for competition at a four-year university after graduating WMA." Gibson attended Wentworth from fall of 1968 to spring of 1970. He lettered two years in football, basketball, and tennis. He made semifinals in State in Doubles, Region 16. He was also awarded the Bill Cook award two years in a row, the Jeff Parott Award, and was runner-up in the Ted Messmor Award. Gibson is pictured at left at WMA this year and at right during his cadet years at WMA.

The 2001 Junior high football season was definitely an adventure in perseverance. The majority of the cadets had little, if any, prior football experience coming into the season. Through hard work, and many hot afternoon practices, the team made great improvements in their techniques and basic fundamentals.

It was a good year for junior high football at WMA. We finished the season 2-3, with wins over Orrick and Norborne, and the losses coming from Lone Jack, Braymer and Polo. Rhinehold Leight was named team MVP of the junior high football team at the fall sports banquet.

It was truly an enjoyable season and a privilege to serve as the coach.

The Wentworth Dragons ralley up before the second half of the Kemper game.

The 2001 WM A Football season got off to a bad start with an 0-5 record after five games. However, things improved for the Dragons with a win over MM A in the sixth game of the season. We went on to beat the next three teams, with victories over Norbome, Higginsville, and Lexington. We ended the season with a 4-6 record, with a disappointing one point loss to Kemper in the last game of the season. Season highlights include a victory over Norbome at homecoming and a winning touchdown pass at the buzzer against Lexington in the last home game of the season. Although we lost some games that we should have won, it was a great season. We posted WMA's best record in years, and had a lot of fun in the process. Our success is largely due to the excellent leadership, both from the coaches and team captains. However, the main factor in our team's success was the enormous amount of effort put forth in practice. We spent hours drilling our plays to perfection and had countless 3-a-days during football camp. We could not have achieved at the level that we did without the full cooperation and dedication of every member of our squad. Our team stressed the fact that everyone plays. No matter a person's size, if he had heart, then he played for us this year. Underclassmen were critical in showing other school's scout teams to our varsity squads in practice. We were a team, and when a game was on the line, we pulled together and brought home the win.

Established by Missouri two-year college presidents in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership and service programming. Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1,100 chapters located in 50 United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges.

MILITARY BALL

Following a long tradit ion of having celebrity judges select the Wentworth Military Academy Military Ball Queens, Missouri Lt. Governor Joe Maxwell has selected the queens. Maxwell made his selection from over 30 candidates entered by cadets representing the battalion and each of the six companies. Company Queens and their dates. Top row: C/1SG Daniel Mitchell and HQ's queen C/SGT Dusti Tabor, cadet Jason Elbert and Bravo's queen C/CPL Annette Cox, 2LT Christopher Sherman and Tango's queen C/2LT Yami Rolon, Battalion Queen C/1LT Shirley Ziser and C/CPT Scott Rolfe, Echo's queen C/CPT Jamiah Edwards and her father Melvin Respress, Foxtrot 's queen cadet Asyha Meyers and cadet Brian Hynie. Bottom: Alpha's queen C/CPT LaTawnya Robinson and her brother H D James Robinson II.

92

C/1 LT Shirley Ziser, Covington, KY, was selected to be the 2002 Battalion Queen. She was nominated by C/CPT Scott Rolfe of Echo Company. Cadet Ziser, a junior college sophomore, will be graduating this spring. Next fall she'll continue working on her bachelor's degree at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. Upon graduation from CMSU, she will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army. As a top student, Cadet Ziser is the commander of the Wentworth Military Academy Color Guard.

"I am very honored to be Military Ball Battalion Queen for 2002 and to be able to call Wentworth my second home. I realize that being a cadet here we have gained much more knowledge than any other cadet in an ROTC program. Attending Wentworth, we are very different because it becomes our daily routine to be a leader. It's almost like it is in our blood to be a leader at all times. I was able to experience the observation on how we are different from other cadets by attending the senior ROTC fall Field Training Exercise. We fell in at the position of attention, while teaching others what was going on when we were the ones who took the leadership positions. However the reason why we are different is not because of ROTC but because we attend this Academy. I would like to give a special thanks to those people who took the time to recognize me. I would also like to say that I am proud to be graduating from Wentworth Military Academy."

DANIEL ALBERTO JEMMOTT JR.

Son, the last 20 years have gone by so very fast; It seems like only yesterday you were beginning head start. We wish the years would slow down so that we could spend

More of those special and precious quality times with you. Jr., you have given us so many memories from your first smile.

To your first day in the Academy. Now you are graduating And receiving your Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army;

Rising above your own expectations, and surpassing my own military Accomplishments, you continue to fill us with pride and provide Us with wonderful memories. Son, we are so very proud of you.

God has blessed you with a unique personality, mind and spirit has Touched many lives and has blessed you with a unique personality Mind and spirit that have already gotten you very far in life.

Your spirit has touched many lives and has blessed more than you Would ever know. To you life is an adventure full of fun. Very competitive with lots to see and do. For the day you Were born you were one of a kind, with a free spirit that

Allowed you to go for anything you put your mind to. Sometimes that spirit got you into troubles, but you

Learned from those experiences. You have grown, and you Have discovered that life's adventures are not always easy.

As you face more of life's adventures and you definitely will, Keep in mind, Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through

Christ who strengthens me." Keep that wonderful sense of humor, that loving nature, Adventurous spirit. Always hold on to your dreams and Strive to reach your goals. We thank God for you. Our

Prayer for you is to continue on the path the Lord has set For you. Wherever you go, whatever you do, remember always To put God first. Thank you, Jr., for filling the years With so much happiness and adventure for us to treasure.

"The Lord bless you keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face

toward you and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-26

"Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He

will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6

Love Always, Daddy, Mommy, Giovanni, Deshawn, David, Dezerie,

Dad, Mom and Grandma

Well, Fritz, the day has come when you're finally graduating from junior college. It's unbelievable you've been in military school for eight years; five of those eight were a struggle for both of us.

Remember your first year at Carson Long? Dad was so proud of you and to see you doing so well compared to public school and all your rights.

I was always proud of your achievements. Even though I may have been hard on you at times, I knew you had it in you. I've always wanted better for you than what I had.

I know Dad is probably looking down on you, and he's gloating. I know he's so proud of you and knowing he did the right thing for your education. I know it was right for you, too!

From the time you were a little guy, you were always dressed in camouflage and digging holes in the yard; you and your friends loved to play Army.

It used to be funny to watch. But look at you now.
