    School criticism

    PARENTS have criticised the

    governing body at Calday

    Grange Grammar School in a

    report commissioned by theschool itself.

    Most respondents were

    unhappy with the way the

    school was being governed.

    The school has promised

    to keep parents informed of

actions it takes as a result of

    their feedback.

    The issue was also brought

up in Parliament by local MPEsther McVey who asked

    the Education Minister what

    could be done when such

    disagreements occur.

THE Wirral Peninsula and West Kirby in particular,

was the star of the show when the BBCs

Countryle made a visit recently. The show,

broadcast on 6th February, featured Hilbre Island

    and Thornton Hough.

During the show presenter Matt Baker was

accompanied by Wirral Council ranger Matt

Thomas on a boat trip to view the wildlife around

Hilbre Island. The Wirral coastline, which is hometo thousands of wading birds, is described as, a

    wildlife wonderland.

to take part in a sponsored karaoke event to bring in the cash. Sixth form boys at the

school also had their legs waxed to help top up funds.

Amy Harding, of the Teenage Cancer Trust said it was remarkable achievement.

    It is unbelievably

    moving when you think

    about the effort these

    young people went to

    help other teenagers,

many of whom theydont know and may

    never meet. Their

    help is invaluable and

    as a charity were

    really grateful for their

    support, she added.

    French teacher Faye

    Jones said each year

    the school selected a

    charity to back. Whenstudents discovered

    more about the work

    of the Teenage Cancer

    Trust they unanimously

    decided they wanted to

    support its efforts.

    Pupil Amber Hughes,

aged 13, said: Raising the money was very rewarding but also great fun. Everyone

involved is pleased we were able to help the charity.

Last year the school completed a marathon 35,000 fund raising effort to build acommunity school for villagers in Xinzghe in Mongolia, having visited the region and

seen the conditions in which people were living. All 1,250 of the schools students and

teaching staff were involved in fund raising activities which included three sponsored

    walks along the Wirral Way.

This year students have decided to raise funds for the Alzheimers Society.

    Typical questions include:Wat incom do I nd?Wat tax r cas can I gt?how can I ovrcom infation?

Tese are just a ew o the excellent questions we deal

with. So what should you look to do? Here we outline a

    simple 10 point plan.

    1. ake a little time to plan and prepare. Seek proessionalhelp. A nancial adviser will help you with the ollowing 9

steps and hence work out a plan best suited to your needs

    and objectives.

    2. Establish what pensions you have got. It is amazingjust how easy it is to orget a pension rom way back. Go

though all your employment history with your adviser.

Tat way you can be sure you have not missed anything.

    3. Decide whether you want to ully retire or semi-retire.

    4. Establish a new household budget. Identiy expendi-ture which you know will cease and what new expenditure

(eg hobbies, more travel) you will have.

    5. Understand what State Pension you are entitled to andwhether you want to draw on it now or later.

    6. Decided how much tax ree cash you want to take andwhat to do with it.

    7. Tink about paying of any debts you might have.

    8. Determine how any lump sum you have should gener-

ate income now and or later. Do you want a guaranteedincome and do you want it to rise over time.

    9. Understand what employee benetsyou may have lost and whether you need to

    replace them (eg health insurance).

    10. Finally, a good adviser will help youthrough your options and thereby allow you

to concentrate on enjoying your hard

    earned retirement.

Eckie the local warriorFrom West Kirby he hailed the bold Eric Harkness,

sent many opponents from light into darkness.

A quiet family man, a former pro ghter,

who fought opposition when often pounds lighter

He trained every morning as bells began ringing,

before daylight arrived, or birds started singing.

Although in his seventies he was keen to stay healthy,

after years in the Army he wasnt too wealthy

His route every morning took him over the border,

where a plot of good land cost a leg and a quarter.

It was round about six he began his routine,

and the Caldy-ites thought it just a bad dream.

He sparred with young trees, threw a number of jabs,

a few hundred press-ups, crouched down like a crab.

Then hed run on the spot for a quarter of an hour,

pufng and blowing, conserving his power

The natives were stunned by this unusual behaviour,

one phone the cops, while his wife called her saviour.

Its just Eckie again was the reply from the station,

preparing himself for his next confrontation

No one seemed happy with the policemans reply,

so they contacted a JP whose house was nearby.

He searched through old records, it didnt take long,

to nd Erics credentials when he t, young and strong.

Hed boxed in the army and fought in the war,

the only pro ghter from the West Kirby shore.

With an unblemished record, honest and grand,he was always made welcome in Caldys green land.

Which disease was it that cured ham used to have?

Fiction: The Man in the Wooden Hat - Jane Gardam

A marvelous new novel from a well-loved author. The prequel to this book, Old

Filth, told the story of Sir Edward Feathers QC, aka Filth (failed in London, try Hong

Kong), his colonial upbringing and career, his long and comfortable marriage, his

rivalries and friendships. The Man in the Wooden Hat picks up these threads from the

perspective of Filths wife, Betty. An orphan of the Japanese internment camps, a free

spirit, a clever codebreaker at Bletchley Park, Betty has her own secret passions. No

wonder she is drawn to Filths hated rival at the bar, the brash forceful Veneering.

Jane Gardam is excellent at depicting what seem to be very conventional characters

and then exposing all sorts of unexpected contradictions and internal conicts. She isalso brilliant at evoking place, whether it be steamy Hong Kong or postwar Pimlico.

If you enjoyed Filth , you will love this book- another great recommendation for Book

    Clubs.

Non-Fiction: Faulks on Fiction - Sebastian Faulks

Accompanying the fantastic programme on BBC this engrossing literary and social

history gives a compelling and personal look at the British novel through its greatest

characters - the heroes, lovers, snobs and villains all seen through the eyes of

    bestselling novelist Sebastian Faulks.

The publication of Robinson Crusoe in London in 1719

marked the arrival of a revolutionary art form: the novel.

British writers were prominent in shaping the new type

of storytelling - one which reected the experiences of

ordinary people, with characters in whom readers could nd

not only an escape, but a deeper understanding of their

own lives. But the novel was more than just a reection of

British life. By focusing not on writers but on the people they

gave us, Faulks not only celebrates the recently neglected

act of novelistic creation but shows how the most enduring

ctional characters over the centuries have helped map the British psyche - through

heroes from Tom Jones to Sherlock Holmes, lovers from Mr Darcy to Lady Chatterley, villains from Fagin to Barbara Covett and snobs from Emma Woodhouse to James

    Bond.

A great read for any literature lover.

Teen Fiction: Forge - Laurie Halse Anderson

It is 1777. Curzon is ghting with the American army and preparing for a bitter winter

in Valley Forge. Isabel is trying to nd her little sister, from whom shes been cruelly

separated. When Curzon and Isabel meet up their desire for freedom propels them to

take a drastic and and dangerous course of action. How do you survive a war, liberate

yourself and the girl you love from slavery, and make it to freedom?

Wonderful historical ction from a Carnegie shortlisted author, ideal for young teens.

Why do AM radio stations keep broadcasting in the afternoon?

In the ovel The Huchbackof notre Dame, Ezmerelda is abeautiful seductive gypsy girl who isat the poit of goig to the gallowswhe Quasimodo (the huchback)arrives with a rope to rescue her.As you will observe i our picturethis moth Joh Adams may ot

be a Quasimodo look-a-like buthis Ezmerelda most certaily is abeautiful seductive gypsygirl who was rescuedwhe Joh arrived witha rope ad some otherparapheralia i 1990.

John already owned aTriumph TR5 which hepurchased in 1978 but by

now, growing childrenwere becoming difcult toshoehorn into the restrictedspace behind the front seats. Days out toclassic car shows and family picnics etc.were threatened and so it was decided tobuy a car with more space for passengers.Another Triumph was of course selected, this time in the form of a Herald 1200ccconvertible.

Ezmerelda was spotted in theMotorsport magazine, she was a memberof a large family living in Hitchin,Hertfordshire, they had owned her fromnew and had carefully kept a record ofthe regular servicing and maintenanceshe had received from the local Triumphdealer throughout her life. A viewing wasarranged and for John it was love at rstsight, a deal was quickly struck.

As mentioned above John had arrivedprepared for the worst as he planned his

drive home but the trusty little Heralddelivered nothing but glad tidings ofcomfort and joy as they sped at a steady65-70 mph back to the Wirral. Soon, dressed in a new coat of paint andretrimmed inside, Ezmeralda was inservice again providing for her new familywhere the less accommodating TR5 had

left off.Of course times change, eventually the

children found new pastimesand Johns work becamemore demanding. Ezmereldawas well looked after in goodaccommodation but wasntlet out often. Now in semi-retirement John tells mehe is hoping his seductive

little gypsy girl will soonbe hitting the road againand getting back into her

    travelling mode.Fact File:-The Triumph Herald was a

small two-door car introduced in 1959by Standard-Triumph of Coventry. Bodydesign was by the Italian stylist Michelottiand the car was offered in saloon, convertible, coupe, van and estate form.

Over 300,000 were sold some of which arestill seen on our roads today. The sportingVitesse models as well as the Spitre andGT6 are all ingeniously based on the samechassis and running gear as the herald, with bolt-together bodies.I hope to bring you more stories of these

well loved and remembered cars over thecoming months.
