Hewitt Street or Hewett Street? It can be spelled either way depending on theinterpretation of the person spelling it.

There is HewittStreet, theHewettAddition map,a few of theU.S. censusspelled it bothways, and so,it just depends.

A few facts about the man whose name wequestion.Henry Theodore Hewitt was born Jan. 21. 1829in Winchester, Litchfield, Conn. He waseducated in Conn. and at the academy in N Y.After that schooling was finished he went ontolearn the carpentry and mill weights tradeswhich benefited him greatly later in life.He arrived in San Francisco June 27, 1852 thenmoved onto Sacramento and then onto themines where he stayed five (5) years and thenmoved on to spent some time with the WilliamWalker Campaign in Nicaragua and finallysettled in Santa Rosa. He lived and createdmany businesses during the twenty (20) yearshe lived here. Most of the information I foundabout him was taken from the pages of a sitecalled Geneology.com. He was a contractor, builder and manufacturer of lumber operationsof a planing mill and dealt in all kinds of buildingmaterial.I wasn’t able to locate much information fromthe Santa Rosa Library annex and thatsurprised me since he seemed to be soinvolved in the area. I was hoping to locatewhere his lumber business, hardware store andplaning mill were located – it simply said nearthe railroad station.I am going to list businesses I read about. TheH.T. Hewitt & Co. Planing Mill Lumber YardHardware Store near railroad depot. Real estate

on 4th Street. A group of incorporators seekingto start a new water company called MarkWest Water Co. Chairman of the ExecutiveCommittee of the Workingman’s Party and adelegate from Santa Rosa. He was electedchairman of the Greenback Labor Party. Alongwith a man named Mr. Baker they wereproprietors of the Santa Rosa Flour Mill onPetaluma Rd. These same two men owned theWoolen & Tannery Mill with Mr. Hewitt beingpresident which he was later removed from.

He died May 28, 1898.H. T. Hewitt’s health began to fail him andaround the 1880’s he moved to San Jacinto,CA where interesting enough he once againgot involved with ranching and building…this isa another story. Not sure what happened to his first wife Janesince she was alive when he married thesecond time…this also is another story.I have put together a small file and if you wouldlike to have a look/see please contact me. Iwas able to buy Hewett Addition map from thecounty and also some deed transactions whichI can’t make head or tails of.

Submitted by Marge Jones – yourcurious neighbor who enjoys the pasthistory.
