Chop’s Promotes Community Service for Teens! Are you a high achiever, interested in serving thecommunity and perhaps planningon an Ivy League education? Lookinto the “Interact Club. LikeRotary, its parent organization, Interact’s mission is toprovide service to others, promote integrity, andadvance world understanding, goodwill, and peacethrough fellowship. There’s a new Chapter of the Interact Club at Chops.Presently, the Chop’s Chapter averages 15 members permeeting. Chop's Teen Club is launching the RU Ready? A WorkReady Certification Program this summer! It is sixtraining cycles of six weeks each serving up to 115 highschool students throughout the year. A collaboration withthe Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) RegionalOccupation Program (ROP), the six week courses focus

on 15 competencies that So. Co. employers identified asessential for success on the job. Participants willcomplete a portfolio and exhibit competency in key skillsareas and receive satisfactory evaluations by a worksite/volunteer supervisor and an adult role model. Studentswill participate in an interview by a panel of businesscommunity members. The instructional program isprimarily interactive; in a non-threatening and engaginglearning environment . Our highly qualified staff leads thesummer Kick-off session; a credentialed teacher runs thesubsequent five sessions beginning in September.

After receiving their graduation certificate at a ceremony- participants will walk away with an updated resume andthe skills and confidence to help them be successful on thejob.

Chop’s Executive Director, Diana Curtin says, “the goal ofthe program is twofold--we want to equip teens with theskills necessary for success on the job and at the sametime, create a stronger workforce for Santa Rosa andSonoma County.”

Free popcorn. Thanks to Paul andVeronica for creating and organizing this wonderfulevent!DeTurk Vintage Rose GardenThe roses at DeTurk Round Barn Park are in bloom! It is called a Vintage garden because the majority ofthe roses are dated prior to the 1930s which keepswith the West End’s historic designation. This rose garden is the creation of the combinedefforts of neighbors. In 1999, Lea Barron-Thomasapplied for a Schulz Neighborhood Grant thatfunded the rose garden and the DeTurk Bulletinboard. Gina Stateler-Calhoun designed the garden. She chose an interesting variety of antique rosessuch as Hoag House Cream, Talisman, Vesuvius &Thomas Edison. The garden was planted byneighbors in 2000. It was lovingly tended by Ginauntil the DeTurk Round Barn Park was rehabbed.2010 was a rough year for our roses. Neighborsjoined together to severely prune the roses, theywere pulled out and stored in Lea’s yard until theywere replanted. Gina designed a new plan for the larger garden, added a few roses and they were finally replanted inthe new, improved rose garden. At this point, thereare over 35 roses and most of them are tagged withtheir name and date (if known).Stroll on down to the DeTurk Round Barn and enjoythe new rose garden- you may even see Ginacaring for the roses.
