WELCOME! Welcome to the first issue of the We Go Pedal News! We hope you find this newsletter full of useful information and tips and suggestions as to how you can cycle more or, if you haven’t cycled in a long time, how you can get back in the saddle. If you have any suggestions as to what you would like to see in the newsletter please get in touch. We plan to produce three issues between now and June! ISSUE 1 JANUARY 2016 WEST GLASGOW PEDALLERS – WE GO PEDAL PROJECT! The West Glasgow Pedallers We Go Pedal project is a partnership project. Dumbarton Road Corridor Environment Trust (DRCET) is the lead partner in the project and the other partners are De’ils On Wheels bike workshop (a DRCET project), LINKES Bike Club and the Whiteinch Bike Club. The project aims to encourage people of all ages and abilities living in west Glasgow (Yoker, Scotstoun, Whiteinch and Knightswood) to start cycling or cycle more in their community promote cycling as an active, alternative and complementary means of travel to existing means of travel provide learning and development opportunities for people in west Glasgow including improving cycling skills, cycle maintenance skills, health and wellbeing and confidence The project is funded by Cycling Scotland’s Cycle Friendly and Sustainable Communities Fund (CFSCF). You can keep up to date with the progress of the project by visiting the Dumbarton Road Corridor Environment Trust blog and clicking on the We Go Pedal logo or clicking on the We Go Pedal tag on any blog entry. https://dumbartonroad.wordpress.com/tag/we-go-pedal SURVEY We recently undertook a short survey of local people to find out more about people’s cycling and travel habits. We had 128 responses to the survey which was fantastic – 71 women and 57 men responded with 68 of responses coming from G13 and G14 postcodes. Interestingly 82% of U16s and 90% of over16s could cycle. And 23% of households had no car and 12% of households had no bicycles! We asked people that cycled what would encourage them to cycle more and we asked people that didn’t cycle what would encourage them to get in the saddle! Surprisingly the responses were very similar More and better cycle paths especially segregated paths Lack of confidence when cycling especially on roads and in traffic Lack of time. And the weather was a big issue with both cyclists and non-cyclists. So this newsletter hopes to address some of the issues raised – although not a lot we can do about the weather! We are delighted that Cycle Law Scotland has kindly sponsored all three issues of the newsletter. www.cyclelawscotland.co.uk Cycle Law Scotland provides cyclists with unrivalled, specialist, personal representation with accident claims. NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK HITS 20!2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the National Cycle Network. In 1995 Sustrans set out to create our vision of a UK-wide network of high-quality, convenient walking and cycling routes.

The Network passes within a mile of half of all UK homes and now stretches over 14,000 miles across the UK and forms a series of safe, traffic-free paths and quiet on-road cycling and walking routes that connect to every major town and city. Route 7, which runs from Sunderland to Inverness, and Route 75 both run through Glasgow.

The Network has demonstrated that providing safe, attractive walking and cycling networks is a crucial way to give people the confidence they need to leave their car at home and walk and cycle more.

SOUTH WEST CITY WAY OPENEDA new 2km stretch of segregated cycle way recently opened on the South side linking Pollokshields with the Tradeston Bridge. The route is part of Glasgow’s “City Ways” which are those cycle routes that radiate from the city centre. They are key routes that have business, cultural, educational and residential destinations along and in close proximity to them and they link into the wider cycle network.
