Representatives from several area agen-
cies were on hand this week to announce thatan agreement was reached recently betweenthe American Red Cross and the Little RiverBand of Ottawa Indians (LRBOI) that desig-nates the Little River Casino Resort as a RedCross emergency evacuation center.
This is just a perfect location and site forus to have an evacuation center, said Wally Taranko, executive director of the WestShore Chapter of the American Red Cross. There is a conference center and 300-bedhotel, and more importantly generators thatcould power this place in case the electricity goes down. They also have the tribal watersupply. Basically this is a self-sufficient sitewhich in an emergency, if we lost utilities inthe area, this place would still function.
Taranko added that the Red Cross plansto train some casino employees so that in theevent of an emergency, they would be ready to help.
We will work hand-in-hand with thetribe and I cannot think of a better agree-ment to have forged in this area for thecitizens in case emergency strikes, Tarankocontinued. I want to thank the tribe and thetribal council for their willingness to partnerwith us.
Living in this beautiful part of Michigan,we tend to think were immune to (emergen-cy incidents), said Glenn Zaring, head of theTribal Emergency Response Team and alsodirector of the LRBOI public affairs office.
But we have to be in place with the righttools, the right people, the right training to beable to respond quickly to help everyone out,and thats the reason were here today.
Lt. Ken Falk, Manistee County emergency management coordinator, said that he thinkshaving the casino available as an emergency evacuation center is a great idea.
Id like to thank the tribal council forallowing the facility to become a shelter,Falk said. It is quite the asset. The state, region, and neighboring counties will benefitgreatly, too, if they have a large scale inci-dent.
The Little River Casino Resort has beenin existence for approximately 11 years and with the help of the community we have been able to grow a great business that hasfar-reaching ripples throughout the com-munity, said Tom Davis, general manager of the casino. It is so appropriate to utilize thisfacility that this community has supportedfor the past 11 years (as an evacuation center)and we are very, very proud to be able to con-tribute to the community in this way and tocontinue to be a good corporate citizen.
Larry Romanelli, LRBOI ogema, said thathe was pleased to be able to offer this build-ing to the community for this shelter.
I think its a perfect example of how ourgovernment-to-government relationship can work together to provide a valuable service,Romanelli said.
Romanelli added that in the summer of 2008 the casino was hosting the Michigantribal forum when that summers big stormhit. Governor Granholms representativeattending the meeting just happened to be amember of Michigans emergency responseteam, and Romanelli said he was impressed with the casinos ability to weather such astorm.
He has talked with me about it onseveral occasions and sent letters to thetribe thanking us for our response and con-gratulating us on our emergency efforts,Romanelli said.
It is so appropriate to utilizethis facility that this commu-nity has supported for thepast 11 years (as an evacua-tion center) and we are very,
very proud to be able to con-tribute to the community inthis way and to continue tobe a good corporate citizen.

Zebra mussel infesta-tions continue and have
been confirmed in 255 of Michigans inland lakesand 17 rivers and streams, according to Michigan SeaGrant.
A small freshwater mol-lusk, the zebra mussel hasbeen invading Americasrivers and lakes since 1988.Zebra mussels originatedin the Balkans, Poland, andthe former Soviet Union.
Zebra mussels upsetecosystems, threaten nativewildlife, damage structures, and cause other seriousproblems. Millions of dol-lars are spent each year inattempting to control thesesmall but numerous mol-lusks.
