up and running on sci-ence. However, he did givethe elementary students awarning to wait until theywere in chemistry class totry some of these experi-ments, and to never try toduplicate them at home.

We thought it wouldbe a good idea to let thekids see some interestingscience, and hopefully that

Manistee High School Advanced Placement chemistry student Andrea Paine shows Jefferson ElementarySchool third-graders how hydrogen peroxide reacts with other chemicals in a demonstration aimed at spark-ing interest in science.

    EXPERIMENTS:From Page 1

will pique their interestin it and when they get afew years older they willtake classes like the APChemistry, ODonnell said.

The idea of putting onthe presentation appearedto be just as appealing tothe high school studentsas it was to the elementaryones. They had a great timeexplaining the experimentand then making littleeyes open wide with the

interesting things they hadto show them.My students kind of

tell me which experimentsare appealing to them,so they come up with theideas based on demon-strations they have seenin class, ODonnell said. This is really somethingthat I would like to con-tinue in the future for thekids.

Besides getting thechance to see all the experi-ments, ODonnell gavethe Jefferson Elementarystudents an explanation attheir level of what chemis-try is and why it is impor-tant to study it. He pointedout the importance in theworld of all the chemicalsand elements they study inclass.

However, what reallydrove home the pointsfor the younger studentswas some very well donepresentations by the APChemistry students. Theolder students were verygood about explainingexactly what they weredoing and kept the elemen-

tary students sitting on theedge of their seats, wonder-ing what was coming next.

There were green thingsflowing out of chemistrybottles, flames shootingin the air, bangs and justabout every other possiblesurprise that surely will putthe interest in some youngminds to follow suit severalyears from now when it istheir turn to take chemis-try.

Nathalie Kenny gives students the opportunity for aclose view of what she created in her experiment.

    NORTH AMERICANPRECIS SYNDICATE

U.S. TransportationSecretary Ray LaHoodrecently announced thelaunch of a series of newpublic service announce-

ments (PSAs) released inpartnership with the AdCouncil that promote childcar safety among parentsof children ages newbornto 12.

According tothe Department ofTransportations NationalHighway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA),motor vehicle crashes arethe leading cause of deathfor children ages 1 through12 years old. From 2006 to2010, 4,028 children ages12 and younger were killed

in crashes and anotherestimated 660,000 childrenwere injured in crashesinvolving a passengervehicle. However, NHTSAreports that child restraintsin the vehicle saved thelives of an estimated 9,611children ages 4 and youngerfrom 1975 to 2010.

While safety is ourtop priority for everyoneon our roadways, werecalling on parents to doeverything they can to pro-tect our most vulnerablepassengers, said Secretary

LaHood. These new publicservice announcementswill encourage parents tochoose the right seat fortheir children and properlysecure them every time theyget behind the wheel.

Working with the AdCouncil as part of an ongo-ing campaign to ensurechild car safety, NHTSAunveiled new PSAs thatwill air on television, radio, online and in outdooradvertising nationwide. The Right Seat effort aimsto make sure all parents

and caregivers are properlysecuring children ages 12and under in the right carrestraint (rear-facing, for-ward-facing, booster, seatbelt) for their age and size.Targeting parents and care-givers who think their chil-dren are already using theright car seats, the key mes-sage of the PSAs is Parentswho really know it all, knowfor sure their child is in theright car seat.

The proper use of achild seat is the most effec-tive way to keep a child

safe in a moving vehicle, said NHTSA AdministratorDavid Strickland. Parentsand caregivers shouldalways use a child seatand, based on NHTSAsupdated guidelines, shouldkeep their children in theircurrent seats for as longas possible before movingthem up to the next type ofseat.

Coinciding with therelease of the new PSAs,NHTSA also launchedParents Central, a newone-stop-shop website with

tools and resources forkeeping children safe in andaround cars.

For more than 25 years, the Ad Council and NHTSAhave worked together onconsumer safety PSA cam-paigns. Previous campaignstargeted individual stagesof child passenger safety;i.e., the LATCH system, booster seats and seat belts. The English-language PSAswere created pro bono byadvertising agency Gotham,Inc.

    We are proud to part-

ner with Secretary LaHood,Administrator Stricklandand NHTSA to extend ourmore than 25-year partner-ship with NHTSA by releas-ing new PSAs that addressthe absolute importance ofchild car safety, said PeggyConlon, president and CEOof the Ad Council.

Choose the right seat for childrenSAFETY:A new websiteencourages caregiversto learn how to select, install and use the correctchild safety seat. (NAPSIPhoto)

    NORTH AMERICAN PRECISSYNDICATE

When it comes to protecting theenvironment, the younger generationsinvolvement is sometimes limited to recy-cling paper and picking up trash. At 4-H,however, youth are tapping into theirmath, science, engineering and leadershipskills to make a positive impact on theirenvironment.

Birch Run High School in SaginawCounty, Mich., was paying to remove theused cooking oil from the cafeteria withoutany thought as to how it could be reused.

Five teens in the schools 4-H Clubcame up with a plan to collect the usedcooking oil and turn it into bio-diesel fuelthat could run some of their school buses.

The community joined in by donatingits used cooking oil and the program nowhas 2,500 gallons of used vegetable oil toturn into bio-diesel fuel.

In San Leandro, Calif., another groupof 4-Hers decided to reduce its communi-tys environmental footprint. Californiansuse hundreds of thousands of tons ofpolystyrene each year for packaging food, which accounts for a large percentage ofthe litter recovered from storm drains.

By educating restaurants, consumersand public officials about the negativeeffects of using non-biodegradable plastics, the 4-Hers convinced the community to

use alternative products.Across the country in Oxford County,

Maine, 200 students at the 4-H Camp &Learning Center are building underwaterrobots to identify milfoil a weedlikesubstance that grows in fresh water. Asan invasive species in the regions 11 lakesand ponds, milfoil can prevent fishing andswimming, and contaminates clean drink-ing water.

The 4-Hers use a video camera andGPS technology to identify the milfoil, sothey can deal with the problem.

These 4-Hers also do their part to edu-cate the public about the environmentaldangers of not cleaning off boats properly the leading cause of milfoil buildup.

According to The 4-H Study of PositiveYouth Development, conducted by Tufts

University, compared to their peers, youthin 4-H are nearly two times more likely toplan to go to college, are three times morelikely to contribute to their communities, and are more likely to pursue studies or acareer in science, engineering or computertechnology.

4-Hs positive youth developmentprograms are developed by the nations111 land-grant universities, and provideyoung people with first-hand experiencesin learning how to limit humanitys impacton the environment. By taking part, youthare prepared to make a difference. Formore information, visit www.4-h.org.
