MANISTEE — Studentsfrom the Manistee CatholicCentral preschool class of Sandy Ludwig had the rareopportunity to gaze into thefuture, and they liked theview.
No, it wasn’t a look intodecades down the road, butmore of a case of viewingthe next school year. Thats when those students will
officially be entering theManistee Catholic Central
K-12 system, so Tuesday wasdesignated as “Being a kin-dergartner for a day” for thepreschool class.
“Basically what we aredoing is introduction for
indergarten,” said MCCindergarten teacher Ben
Hahnenberg. “It is to experi-ence kindergarten in a day,
ut to also give the excite-ment and enjoyment of thespecial activities that we dothroughout the year.”
Some of the things thatare stressed in kindergartenis handwriting and the for-mation of letters and sounds. They also cover the specialactivities of art, music andthe core subjects like math.
“One of the big thingsthat came out today was
just getting the kids to work together and become lead-ers,” said Hahnenberg.“What is nice is the kinder-garten students actually
become the leaders for thepreschool students.”
It is something the MCCkindergarten teacher saidhelps both groups. Being inthe position of a role modelor leader gives the cur-rent kindergarten studentsan opportunity to preparefor their next step in theeducation process. For thepreschool students it makesa bond with some of theirfuture fellow students whoare a step ahead of them.
The day also included
plenty of fun as musicteacher Betsy Neph led bothgroups in a fun-filled groupof songs. The younger stu-dents were paired up withan older buddy who helped
watch out for them duringthe day.
“The kindergartenstudents didn’t do all theactivities. They would often
just show the preschoolstudents what to do,” saidHahnenberg. “We actually have ... siblings in this group,
but they are not pairedtogether.”
When music class fin-ished they moved over to thecafeteria where students took part in an art class to create
bumblebees made out of plastic cups and some otheritems.
Hahnenberg pointed outthat the program was highly-successful and gave the
younger students confidencethat she knows they will carry
with them into next year.

NORTH AMERICANPRECIS SYNDICATE
Each year, organizedgroups of criminals targetand victimize thousands of
Americans by telephone, e-mails and through the mail— but you can protect your-self and your family.
The United StatesPostal Inspection Servicehas documented over $42million in losses from thistype of fraud. In somecases, people have lost their
homes and their savings by chasing the dream of a big“lottery jackpot.”
Inspector Paul Krennadvises, “One of the maintechniques scammers useis a foreign lottery scam,
where they tell you tosend money to pay fortaxes or fees. If you’vereceived a suspected fraud
via mail or if the mail was used to continue acrime started online, overthe phone or in person, report it to The U.S. PostalInspection Service.”
What to Watch out
For
Here are a few facts andsigns to consider:
nScammers are usingnew techniques, such aslegitimate mailing listsand new technology. They “spoof” caller ID to makeit look as if they’re callingfrom the U.S. or even a gov-ernment agency.
nOlder consumers, especially shut-ins, areoften a favorite target for
foreign lottery fraud. Look out for checks written ormoney wired internation-ally; a telephone that ringsconstantly; or a stack of lot-tery or sweepstakes entries.
nScammers are con-stantly updating theirmethods. One of their lat-est tricks is to convince
you that you’ve won aforeign lottery and all youneed to do is wire a smallprocessing fee (relative tothe gigantic prize). Don’t— you’ll never see thatmoney again.
nBeware of calls fromforeign countries, especially if they’re calling an elderly person.
nIf you or a loved onereceives an unsolicitedoffer, hang up the phone ordelete the e-mail.
nDon’t give out person-al or financial informationto anyone over the Internetor phone.
nNever wire or sendmoney to anyone, any-
where, who says you have won a foreign lottery.
nDon’t let anyone pres-sure you into making animmediate decision.
nNever purchase any-thing until you get all infor-mation in writing.
Where to Get help
To help people recog-nize and prevent fraudsand scams, The U.S. PostalInspection Service set up a
website, www.delivering-trust.com.
Don’tfall forforeignlottery fraud

Foreign lottery fraud, a criminal practice where scammers entice U.S. consumersto send money and even provide bank and credit card information, is a growingproblem that can have devastating and long-lasting effects on victims and their families.

Many schools have found a way to teach more and test less.
NORTH AMERICAN
PRECIS SYNDICATE
Don’t stress the dreadedstandardized test: Someexperts suggest schools testess and teach more.
The Dilemma
Although gathering stu-dent performance data is acritical part of education,“testing day” remains oneof the most dreaded—andcostly—events on theschool calendar. In a recentnational survey, educators
ndicated they spend onaverage more than fourweeks a year testing read-ng skills. Furthermore,
students in grades pre-K through 5 spend an averageof eight entire days takingreading tests.
an answer
To spend less timetesting and more timeteaching, many educa-tors are looking into anew approach known as“Assessment Without
esting.”More than 13,000
schools are using this inno-vation in educational tech-nology that provides teach-ers with student perfor-mance data without havingto stop to give a test.
whaT iT Does
The software, calledLexia Reading, combinesindividualized studentlearning and targetedteaching strategies to helpstudents improve theirreading ability. The systemlets students work at theirown pace, gathers studentperformance data withouta test and saves teachers’time by prioritizing the stu-dents who need the mosthelp and providing teach-ing strategies customizedto each student’s individual
needs.Gathering meaningfulstudent performance datais critical to guide class-room instructional strate-gies, educators say, but, they add, the best way tomeasure student progressis to observe their abilities
while they are learning.
how iT works
Students using this sys-tem work independently onactivities that build reading
proficiency as the software
gathers performance datain real time based on theirresponses to each question.
In contrast, traditionaltesting methods rely on asnapshot of reading per-formance — taken whenstudents are often nervousand not performing attheir best—and can resultin false high or low scores
based on how each studentreacts to the test on a givenday.
Districts are findingthey can reclaim weeksof instructional time andthousands of dollars typi-cally spent testing, whilethe resulting data and theinstructional strategies helpimprove student perfor-mance and reduce stress.
