Each December Marquette Rail brings its Santa Train to towns along its routefrom Grand Rapids to Manistee. The short line railroad that in 2005 took over operations between Grand Rapids and Manistee is essential to several Manisteeindustries.
Last Saturday Marquette Rail cel- brated its fifth anniversary by bringingts annual Santa Train to the communi-ies it serves.
Since 2005 Marquette Rail has beeneasing the tracks and running theailroad between Grand Rapids and
anistee — and it continues to be an
ssential service for several Manisteendustries.“Manistee is actually our biggest
ustomer base on the railroad,” said Almith, Marquette Rail’s director of busi-ess development.
Four industries are Marquette Rail’sain Manistee customers — Americanaterials, Martin Marietta Magnesia
pecialties, Morton Salt and Packagingorporation of America.
American Materials started its aggre-ate and asphalt business earlier thisear on property purchased from Sengock and Trucking just northeast of eitz Park. The company uses specialeated cars to ship and receive liquidsphalt. According to Smith, this new usiness added approximately 600 car
oads to the railroad’s business.During the Manistee Manufacturers
ouncil plant tours held in August, Jimeithel, Martin Marietta plant manager,
aid his plant depends on the railroadecause it brings in 1,000 tons peray — 10 rail cars — of one of its mainaw materials, lime, from a quarry inorthwest Ohio. Reithel said that Martinarietta also ships about half of its fin-
shed product by rail.
“We’ve had a very good year,” Smithsaid of the railroad, adding that busi-ness downturns made 2009 a tough year, however expansions at Martin Marietta, new business from PCA, and the addi-tion of American Materials, have broughttonnage back to 2008 levels.
Short line railroads have become
known for offering better customerservice than the giant railroad corpora-tions, however most things shipped andreceived also rely on rail companies
beyond the Marquette Rail system.Smith said that all of the railway sys-
tems are working on improving customerservice.
“We have really worked hard withCSX, our main interchange partner, tore-created the whole scheme of how freight from our businesses is handled,”Smith said. “We all know that we don’tlose responsibility for what happens tothe freight just because it is beyond ourline.” Smith said.
When something happens to a ship-ment, it’s the fault of, quote, the rail-road,” Smith said.
The Santa Train has become well-appreciated gift Marquette Rail gives tothe communities it serves.
“I saw the Santa Train for the firsttime last year and I was impressed
with the reception it got in each of thetowns,” Smith said. “But, then, I grew upin Chicago where there was a Santa onevery corner, so it was an eye opener forme since kids in the smaller communi-ties we serve don’t see Santa that often.”

Years ago, I was en route towest Michigan for vacation. It’s a16-hour drive from Boston, so westopped overnight in a small town
ust over the Michigan/Ontarioborder.I was tired of driving and didn’t
know my way around, so for din-ner, we decided to order pizza andhave it delivered to our hotel room. After we ordered the pizza, theorder taker asked if we wanted popwith our order.
“Good job up-selling,” I thoughtand I asked if they had Vernor’swhich I love and which is not avail-able in the northeast. They didn’t,but the young man on the phoneoffered to stop at a conveniencestore on the way and get some forme.
Wow. All these years later, I can’t
remember what the name of thetown was, but I remember thename of the pizza chain. I don’tremember what the pizza cost, butI remember that I gave a big tip.I don’t remember how much they charged me to bring the Vernor’s,but I remember how cool it wasto have it delivered. And in all theyears since, I’ve chosen that compa-ny over other options because theproduct is good, but the customerservice is great. I’m a customer forlife.
What would you do to please acustomer? What would your front-line employees do? This week,
when it’s snowy and cold and ourcustomers are busy, is a perfecttime to provide the over-the-topservice they’ll remember yearslater. How many customers for life
will you gain this week?

Looking forvolunteers
The Manistee Civic Players, West Shore Community Collegeand the City of Manistee haveraised money to do the stagefloor replacement project at the
Ramsdell Theatre this winter. Rick Plummer and John Bell have vol-unteered their time for labor andare asking for volunteers to help
with this project. As a major cultural asset for our
community, the Ramsdell is impor-tant for both our community and
your businesses. The stage floorhas many uneven places at the olddangerous elevators, the old scenestorage recess and the coveredfootlights. Rolling scenery is nextto impossible and dancing is dan-
gerous. The plan is to remove theold elevators, remove all unevenflooring, remove the old dangerousstairs to the sub stage, and installnew joists, subfloor and new 1” x 4”T&G clear Douglas Fir stage floor-ing as well as installing a circularstair to the sub stage area.
The first phase will involvedemolition and removal of theelevators, damaged flooring and theold stairs. Volunteers are neededfor this demolition, as well as tohelp once reconstruction is started.
Demolition will have to bescheduled; plans are for the third
week of December or the first week of January. If you want to volun-teer, contact John Bell, [email protected]

Living through a Northern Michigan winter is always a challenge
A lot of Manistee County peo-ple may have been humming thosewords last weekend when we werehit with the first big snowstorm of the year.
There really wasn’t a lot wecould do about it. Those of us thathave lived our entire lives in thispart of Northern Lower Michiganhave come to realize over the yearsthat along with the beauty comesthe other side of Mother Nature inthe winter. Although I am sure the
snowmobile and ski enthusiaststhought the sight of the white snow coming down was pure heaven.
It never ceases to amaze methe crazy things people do when asnowstorm hits this area. It oftenmakes you wonder what were they thinking when they did it.
I overheard someone say thatthere wasn’t any way they weregoing out in this weather to drivebecause it was “just too dangerousto be on the roads.” However, inthe next sentence they spoke about
plans to curl up on the couch, watch some football, and order inpizza.
Huh? When I heard those words itmade me think you will not goout to drive in this weather, but
you think nothing of asking some young kid delivering pizza to goout there in his beat-up car and
bald tires on those icy roads. Another thing that amazes me
is with the weather technology atour disposal today. They actually predict almost to the hour threedays in advance when a storm
will hit. It is plastered all over
the media, and everyone with theexception of someone living in acave is exposed to it.
But ... let the first snowflakesstart to pile up and everyone hasthis surprised look on their faceslike they are saying, “Where didthis come from?”
It sends every tennis shoe wearing grandma into the car inthe direction for the store becausethey can’t survive without gettingan extra quart of milk or loaf of
bread. To me what is even crazier isI heard of this one guy who just“had to run out” to purchase somecigarettes. It makes you kind of
wonder why you would risk yourlife driving in that weather to getsomething that is going to kill youanyway.
What drives me crazy aboutthe winter season is the number of layers of clothing we must put onto go into the outside to stay warm.It seems the older I get, the thicker
the padding it seems to take tokeep me warm. At this pace, some-day in the distant future when I hit70, they will be able to just roll meout the door because there are somany layers of clothing surround-ing me.
Of course, like the proverbiallittle kid who should “have went”
before they left for the car trip, italways seems to happen with therest of us when put on all thoselayers of clothes. That means tak-ing it all off again, and then start-ing all over which usually meansthe desire to go outside by thattime has diminished.
I am sure there are otherslike me who run into what I callthe “snowplow syndrome.” LastSunday when we had the big snow-storm I was out there shovelinglike crazy for 90 minutes and then
went in, took off all of the wintergear to hear that familiar roar of the snowplow going down thestreet.
That allows me two options tothe problem. I can either put allthose winter clothes back on andclear out what the plow threw in,or let it sit and freeze at the end of the driveway. If I let it freeze thatmeans working twice as hard thefollowing day to try and remove it.
Then there are what I like tocall the “attention seekers.” These
are the people that will pop on apair of shorts in a raging blizzard, and walk around in stores just beg-ging for someone to remark about
what they are wearing. If you ask them if they are
cold they say “no, not at all” even
though they are shivering likecrazy when you ask. I swear thatthere was one guy in a store last
week that had sandals and nosocks on and his feet were almostpurple. But ... he was cool — liter-ally.
Usually stormy weather haseveryone looking and beggingfor cancellations. Every kid andteacher wants school called off andthe same can be said for meetingsand other gatherings.
What amazes me is they have blizzards in big cities where every-one is urged to stay off the roads. They can’t make it to work or any-
where else, but 70,000 can makeit to a football stadium where they
will sit outside in blowing snow and windchills of 10 below zero to
watch a football game.Kind of makes you think
— doesn’t it?Something else I find inter-
esting is the way people drive inextreme snow conditions. They wileither go very fast or so slow that

The Department of Natural Resourcesand Environment has begun gearing upto return hatchery production of walleyesto historic levels.
The DNRE plans to take some 50million eggs this spring to produce fry for pond-rearing and direct stocking,an eight-fold increase over the last twoyears.
Since 2006, the DNRE has cut back on most of its walleye rearing activi-ties because of the presence of ViralHemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) in the
brood-stock waters. Now, after several years of testing, a technique has beenfound to disinfect walleye eggs and pre-
vent spreading VHS. As a result, theDNRE will now resume large-scale rear-ing and stocking of walleyes.
“In a perfect world, we wouldn’t havecut our walleye fry production,” DNREDirector Rebecca Humphries said. “Butthe specter of bringing VHS into ourhatchery system or transferring VHS tonew waters was just too risky. The eco-system is constantly changing and our
management practices must change withit. We are pleased that an effective treat-ment for walleye eggs against VHS has
been found and we’re ramping up ourproduction accordingly.”
The DNRE expects it to take two yearsto return to full production of walleye fry.
A number of the rearing ponds, whichhave been idled for the last several years, are in need of maintenance before they can be brought back on line for produc-tion.
Nonetheless, the DNRE expects to
produce at least 80 percent of the totalcapacity for walleye fry in 2011 and be
back to full production in 2012. For moreinformation, visit www.michigan.gov/fishing.

there are 45 cars backed up behind them. What is even more ineresting is the number of people
driving fast who still have a cell phone glued to their ear.Don’t you think they could put it down long enough to havetwo hands on the wheel?
I guess it does come in handy when you run across fromthem a few miles down the road in the ditch, as they are call-ing for a wrecker.
One of my personal favorites is the impatient drivers who will pass anyone in front of them including a snowplow. Itmakes me wonder if it ever crossed their mind that the roadsmight be in a little better condition behind the plow insteadof in front of it.
Ah yes, Northern Michigan, in the winter where men aremen and women are too. However, the sobering thoughtis it’s only December and there is plenty more winter well

KEN: FROM PAGE 3PET CORNER
Looks like winter has found us.As we strive to keep warm, dry, andcozy, let’s not forget our pets needour help to be the same. Our petsbelong indoors with us, but if youmust keep them outdoors, make
sure they have a dry, draft-free shel-ter. Use straw rather than blanketsas they get wet and freeze. Makesure they always have fresh, cleanwater and good nutritional food. When they come in, get the built-upsnow off their feet. Make sure thesidewalk salt you use is pet safe.
As we’re getting our homes ready for the holidays, let’s keep our petssafety in mind. Tinsel and wrap-ping ribbons appear quite attractiveto a playful pet but can be harmfulif swallowed. Keep your breakableornaments up high. As guests arecoming or going, make sure yourpet doesn’t escape and all petsshould have a name tag on.
If your pets appear nervousaround a group, they might preferto be in a room with a few of theirtoys. If you are planning to give apet as a gift, please make sure therecipient is ready, willing and ableto care for it. If your house is goingto be busy, maybe a gift certificatefor a pet would be better. After theholiday, they can come pick one out.Sometimes busy holidays are notthe best time to introduce a new petto a household.
Speaking of name tags, you canget a great one at Lucky Lizard
and part of the cost will come to
Homeward Bound. She has a niceselection of tags to choose from. A name tag could very well be yourpet’s ticket home. You can help
your pet, as well as the pets at theshelter.
Our Sleighbell raffle was a suc-cess. We would like to thank Corky at Reusch’s for all their help, as
well as the donors of the greatprizes. The winners were DonOlsewski who won first place, a
beautiful diamond ring donatedanonymously; Annie Hunt who wonsecond place, a charter fishing tripdonated by Hamilton Charter andKaren Roberts won third prize, a
watch donated by Reusch Jewelry.Congratulations to them and thanksto all who bought a ticket.
Did you know that if you donatepet food to the shelter and take it toParkdale Animal Hospital, they willmatch it? Pound for pound, can forcan. This has been a huge blessingfor us. Thanks to them and those of
you who have brought food to themor to the shelter. We have not had
to buy dog food in more than a year.
To date they have donated over 5tons of bagged food and almost 900cans.
There have also been donationspaid on our account at Parkdale. This is a wonderful way to help us.
We will be having an adopt-a-thon at Sports Ink/Lucky Lizard onSunday from 2 to 5 p.m. We havea great variety of pets that wouldlove nothing more for Christmasthan a “forever home.” They have all
been so good and don’t understand why they had to move out of theirhomes.
We always need volunteers tohelp us out, especially the morningcleaning. They begin at 8:30 every morning, 365 days a year so if you’dlike to come help out, we’d appreci-ate it. If you’re unable to clean, theanimals love company and wouldlike someone to just sit and spendtime with them. You can do this any afternoon we are open, Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday noon to 4 p.m.
All of us at Homeward Bound— the four-legged ones and the two-legged ones who have the privilageof caring for them — would like tothank all of our wonderful support-ers who have helped keep our shel-ter going. Homeward Bound is theirhome, however long or short theirstay is. Our desire is to keep themas healthy, happy and loved as longas they are there.
We wish all our friends a very
Merry Christmas!

The
Catholic
Community
of Manistee invites
you and your family to
celebrate with us this Blessed
Christmas Season. Do you know
that God has chosen you for this time
and in this community? He has need of
you, and so do we, to help spread the Gospel
message of His Son, Jesus Christ. The Catholic
Community of Manistee is a community of believers
striving for a more spiritual and prayerful relationship
with God. Over the years some of our brothers and sisters in
the Manistee area have moved, drifted, or walked away from
regular Sunday worship with us and have left the Catholic Church.
This fact saddens us and we miss your presence with us. This Advent
and Christmas Season we invite you to come home! Come home andonce again celebrate the Catholic beliefs of your youth and join with
us in the participation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is our fervent
prayer that you will want to share this experience of God’s love for all of us.
Come and worship with us and re-discover God’s love, truth and grace
as witnessed and
practiced in the
Catholic Church.
