Chartier confirmed that Tinkerbell is a rare (for Michigan) rufous hummingbird, less than 1 year old, probably on her way south from her birthplace, which most likely was in Alaska, Washington, Idaho or British Columbia. The Perrys said they think she has been at their feeder for at least several months. One of the birders attracted to the Perry backyard was Greg Bodker of Houghton Lake. “This has been like being led to Mecca,” Bodker said of the oppor- tunity to see the special hummingbird. Bodker described himself as “just an old  bald guy chasing birds — a bird bum.” It is through the Internet contact that Chartier decided to make the trip to Irons to see if he could capture, identify, weigh and band the bird. Manistee chambermember Budde Reedof Ludington BeverageCompany is no relationto me, but I wouldn’tmind if he was. Lastweek Budde received theCampus Impact Awardfrom the Council forResource Development, anaffiliate of the AmericanAssociation of Community Colleges. He’s being rec-ognized for his leader-

ship during West Shore

Community College’smajor gifts campaign andin typical fashion, he cred-its the college, other volun-teers and other donors forthe honor.

Next week, your

chamber will honor local businesses and individu-als for their contributionsto our community at thechamber’s business awardsdinner on Thursday. Only four people alive know whothe recipients are, but alook at the nominees willtell you that all of them are

businesses and people thatlove the place they live and

work and they do a lot fortheir community.

Next week, we’ll also

elect chamber officers anddirectors for 2011. Again,

you’ll recognize theirnames and the names of the companies they repre-sent as being supporters of efforts to make our com-munity a great place to be.

Generally speaking, business people who become involved in theircommunity and put theirenergy into making it a

 better place to live and

 work just can’t help them-

selves. They feel inwardly compelled to do good

work for the place they love. None of these folksdid what they did for theircommunity because they

 were hoping to win anaward.

Contributing time, tal-ent and money to yourcommunity is much morethan a marketing strategy or a public relations tactic. But most of the time, we

do well when we do good.

The Perry backyard is fullof bird feeders, and birds of

all types.“My wife is nuts about

them,” Michael Perry said.“I’m just getting into it.”

“There are just an abun-dance of birds here, andgorgeous birds, not just yourrun-of-the-mill birds,” Chrissaid, adding that she andher husband have owned theproperty for about six yearsand moved there fulltimefrom Grand Rapids abouttwo years ago.

Chris has had the time of her life watching Tinkerbell.

“She’s not afraid of any of these other birds — ordogs or people,” she said.“Sometimes there would bethree or four other hum-mingbirds on the feeder.Tinkerbell would sit in atree, then fly over and knock them on the ground andfight them. She’s a ferociouslittle thing, and she wasn’tafraid to let them know thatthis is her feeder.

“If I’m out here by myself, she’ll buzz me,” Chrissaid. “She won’t come thatclose to anyone else.”

With winter loom-ing, Chris indicated thatshe’s been concerned thatTinkerbell is still in the area.

“I’d like to get on aplane and take her as far asI could,” she said. “On thereally cold nights we’ve had,I was afraid Michael wouldcome to the feeder onemorning and find her dead.”

Chartier said it wasn’tunusual for hummingbirdsto stay into the north untilthe cold winds start blow-ing. He remembered hearing

of a hummingbird that waslast seen in Zanesville, Ohioon Dec. 27, when it was 16degrees. It came back thenext summer.

“Hummingbirds can fly 100 to 200 miles a day,”Chartier said. “We don’tknow exactly where they go— there are just a lot of mys-teries about these things andtheir ability to survive.”

The birds cover greatdistances. He said severalyears ago one was banded inTalahassee Fla. in January and then captured inAnchorage, Alaska that June.

Chartier is co-editor of “A Birder’s Guide to Michigan”and has been a contributingauthor for various projectswith National Geographic, including “Complete Birds of North America,” “CompleteBirds of the World,” and“Handheld Birds.”

In 2000, Chartier, wholives in Inkster, receivedhis permit from theCanadian government toband hummingbirds andin 2001 he received his

U.S. permit. That’s whenhe started his Great LakesHummerNet researchproject. Information onthe project is available atthe website www.amazilia.net/MIHummerNet. He hasbeen a member of OaklandCounty Audubon since 1976.

To capture Tinkerbell,Chartier placed a cage with aremote control door in placeof the bird’s favorite feeder. It was about a 20 minute

wait for Tinkerbell to takethe bait. Chartier said in all

he has banded 55 rufoushummingbirds — 50 of them

went into the cage in the firstfive minutes, four took aboutan hour, and he waitedfor three hours for one of them. He added that therehave been some no-shows— where by the time hearrives at the home the birdhas moved on to another ter-ritory.

He estimates that he banded about 700 ruby throats this summer.

The bands Chartier

uses are provided by the bird banding lab at the U.S.Geological Survey. He saidhe submits reports on his

banding activity twice per year, and that the bandinglab has a website whereanyone can look up thenumbers.

Chartier thought thatTinkerbell handled the band-ing experience well.

“It may take an hour forher to come back to the feed-er after we ruffle her feath-ers, and they usually curse

a bit when I let them go,”he said. “But, I don’t speak

hummingbird, so I won’t beable to translate.”

When the bird was band-ed, weighed (3.39 grams)and completely checked out,Chartier placed Tinkerbell inChris Perry’s hand. The birdlay there for a few seconds, until Chartier blew on her,

which sent her up in thetrees.

“Fly free, my friend,”Chris Perry said.
