This Saturday, Circle Family Healthcare Network (CFHCN) will hold its annual health fair, but this

year the Austin-based clinic has added something new to the event — a 5K run and two mile walk.

The West Side Heart & Sole Family 5K Run and Two Mile Walk will kick-off at La Follette Park, 1333 N. Laramie, at 8 a.m. The park’s new track will serve as the course for the event. Participants will trek around the park to complete either the walk or 3.2 mile run.

On-site registration begins at 7 a.m. followed by a 7:30 line-up. The run/walk begins promptly at 8 a.m. Awards will be given for best times for both male and female participants overall in the run. Awards will also be given for the top three finishers in each age category for the walk. To register visit: westsideheartandsole.eventbrite.com. Entry fee for the event start as low as $5 for senior citizens for the two mile walk to $20 for the 5K race for adults.

Event organizers noted the Austin community has hosted many walks in the past, but rarely a run. Adding a run provides something for everyone, but the idea is to get people to be active by doing whatever is comfortable for them, said Circle’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. André Hines. Circle is co-sponsoring the event with State Rep. LaShawn Ford and the Austin Weekly News.

“We want to challenge people who don’t run to try to run and people who don’t walk to get out and walk. We want to encourage people to move; to exercise,” Hines said.

Walking or running, she added, is something that everyone can participate

in regardless of weight, age or sex. Hines encouraged families to come out to the event because walking or running is an activity the whole family can do.

But the goal of the run/walk is to get people to take control of

their health, Hines said. Austin, she noted, has

high incidences of asthma, diabetes, heart disease and doing something as simple as walking or running can greatly improve those health outcomes.

“That’s our goal to bring people to

good health care,” she said.Circle operates four

neighborhood clinics that offer a full spectrum of medical services, including primary care, pediatrics, obstetrics, and in-house and residential mental health services.

State Rep. LaShawn Ford is a co-sponsor of the Heart and Sole run/walk. He noted that the 35-year-old Austin clinic has been an excellent resource to help residents improve their health. But Saturday’s event will show people a fun way they can do it themselves.

He also noted that the run/walk is a good opportunity to break-in La Follette Park’s brand new track. “It’s a beautiful track,” he said. “La Follette Park is a beautiful park. It’s a chance for the community to enjoy that park together for something positive.”

“It is going to be a great day and a great event,” said Dan Haley, publisher of the Weekly. “We also want to play our part in getting people thinking about their health and what they can do day-by-day to feel better; what we can all do as individuals to be in control of our health,” Haley said.

Next year, Circle is planning for a bigger event. The run/walk will take place on Madison Street. Circle is already looking for sponsors. Being on Madison will give the event higher visibility, said Vickie Rivkin, Circle’s director of neighborhood recovery initiative. This will allow the entire community to see the run and be inspired by it, Rivkin added.

Other sponsors include Renaissance Hospital Management, Vanguard West Suburban Medical Center, Urban Partnership Bank, Net-Telligence Group, Norwegian American Hospital, Law Office of Jeffrey Leving, Westside Health Authority, Shiloh M.B. Church, Bethel New Life; Rush Oak Park Hospital and Loretto Hospital.

Austin based Clinic Readies Students for Back to Schoolby La Risa Lynch

Circle Family Healthcare Network is helping parents get their kids ready for back-to-school.

The Austin-based medical clinic will hold its annual community/back-to-school health fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the clinic’s Division Health Center, 4909 W. Division St.

The fair coincides with Circle’s inaugural 3.2 mile run and two mile walk. The West Side Heart & Sole Family 5K Run and Two Mile Walk also kicks-off Saturday at La Follette Park, 1333 N. Laramie, at 8 a.m.

Event organizers said the health fair will allow parents to get those last minute student physicals needed before heading back to school. Circle will provide child immunizations, sports physicals, hearing and vision exams and dental screenings.

“Circle Family Healthcare Network sees this as part of its overall mission in improving the health standards of the community by providing our annual health fair,” said Stephanie Griggs, Circle’s director of community health services. “We are particularly happy to be celebrating 35 years, and we are increasing our entertainment and other services for the community.”

Besides, Griggs added the fair makes

it easier for parents to get screenings in one place and is a more enjoyable way to bring the family out. “This is a much more pleasant way than just necessarily coming in for an office visit,” she said.

Also on tap for the health fair is a petting zoo, a jumping jack and a free bookbag give-a-way. Each bookbag is filled with school supplies. Live music and entertainment will be provided by dance troupe M.A.D.D. Rhythms and vocalist Garry “Sam” Harris.

The fair is not just for kids. Parents can also take advantage of more than 40 health related vendors, including Loretto Hospital and West Suburban Hospital. Parents can receive information on violence prevention and mental health services. Vendors also will provide body massages, AIDS/HIV testing, cholesterol, glaucoma and blood pressure screenings. Having screenings for parents is a way to “treat the whole family,” Griggs added.

For the second time in the fair’s history, a personal trainer and a Zumba or an aerobic dance instructor will be on hand. They will provide personal fitness tips to educate participants on how to take charge of their physical health.

That what’s personal trainer Carmie Burnett aims to do. Burnett, owner of

R7 Fitness, a mobile personal fitness company, will conduct workshops on personal fitness and strength training during the fair. Burnett will demonstrate resistance training by using a person’s own body weight.

Burnett explained people can exercise by doing everyday activities. Individuals can do squats by simply picking up items off the floor or do pushups just by pushing a heavy box around, she said. These movements strengthen upper and lower body muscles without the expense of a gym, Burnett added.

Body weight exercises, she said, are a good way to strengthen tendons, muscles and ligaments in the trunk, core, and back. These exercises stabilize the core and improve posture, Burnett added.

The benefits include developing strength, stamina, flexibility, agility and coordination. Body weight exercise is also the perfect starting point for those embarking on any physical fitness program, Burnett said. It builds a foundation when using more traditional strength training equipment such as balls and bars.

But before people head to the gym and dive straight into lifting weights, individuals need to know how to handle

resistance weights, Burnett said. Done improperly “you are going to harm yourself and body,” she added.

Having a healthy active lifestyle is important for African-Americans since they are most affected by diabetes and hypertension. Exercise and proper diet are key in maintaining a healthy body and weight, Burnett said, adding that something as simple as emotional well being can be impacted by poor health.

“My goal is to get people active and moving,” Burnett said, adding that doing body weight exercises can be done by anyone at any age and any physical ability.

Good luck in the West Side Heart & Sole 5K Run!

Hypertension, diabetes, asthma and heart disease are the leading causes of death for Austin

residents when compared to city rates. But an Austin medical clinic wants

to change those health outcomes. Circle Family Healthcare Network (CFHCN) wants residents to get fit, active and moving. Circle officials believe something as simple as running or walking can greatly improve residents’ lives.

This Saturday Circle will launch its first ever 3.2 mile run and two mile walk entitled West Side Heart & Sole Family 5K Run and Two Mile Walk.

The run/walk will kick-off at La Follette Park, 1333 N. Laramie, at 8 a.m. The event is part of the 35-year-old institution’s annual community/back-to-school health fair also slated for Saturday. Circle is co-sponsoring the run/walk with State Rep. LaShawn Ford and the Austin Weekly News.

“We know one of the risk factors for diabetes, hypertension and heart related illness is obesity,” said Circle’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. André Hines. “We know that exercise and nutrition is a major a way to reduce obesity and weight problems.”

Hines said studies have shown obesity puts a person at higher risk for all major illnesses including cancer and stroke. According to the city’s Department of Public Health’s community health profile, 2 percent of Austin residents died from HIV/AIDS compared with 1.2 percent of Chicago residents overall in 2003. Another 3.7 percent of Austin residents will die from diabetes while only 3.3 percent of Chicago residents will die from the disease.

Many of these maladies, Hines contends, can be controlled by exercise. But she said people have to take control of their health care. “Most of us go to the doctor once or twice a year, and I think too many of us feel like that is the extent of our responsibility as far as … taking control of our health care or having good health care,” Hines said.

“It really is not enough,” she added, noting that most people feel that their health is the doctors’ responsibility.

“We all have a role,” Hines said. “The doctor has a role, but we have a major role. We want people to understand that we’re really the only ones that can take care of our health care. It’s got to go beyond going to the doctor when

something is wrong…. We’ve got to think prevention.”

She contends the passive attitude toward being in charge of our health comes from lack of knowledge. She said many residents don’t understand what it means to exercise. Hines said people don’t have to join a gym or buy fancy shoes to start to exercise.

“I think people need to be taught,” said Hines, who has run several marathons, believing at first she couldn’t do it. “If people in our community see people walking, the more likely they are able to see themselves walking or running,” she said.

Vickie Rivkin, Circle’s director of neighborhood recovery initiative, agreed. She joined a running club at her church and soon was inspired to do the Chicago Marathon. Rivkin’s inspiration came from seeing herself doing the exact same things her running mates were doing.

Hines contends black people tend to stereotype themselves out of activities, especially things that promote fitness and well being.

“It is like anything else. If the only CEOs you see don’t look like you, it is hard for you to get the idea that I can do that,”

she said. “I think, in our community, we have this idea of what a runner looks like, and it doesn’t look like us. It is not a 52-year-old who is probably a little overweight.”

“I can’t believe the looks I get when I say I’ve run the marathon…,” Rivkin added. “I don’t have to be this lithe thin athlete in order to run a marathon. It is about consistency and building your endurance and eating properly.”

Hines hopes having the Heart and Sole run and walk will serve as an inspiration for residents to take up some kind of exercise and to show them that people in their community are doing these types of things.

“I guess the real purpose of this is not just to run and walk, but to encourage people to take control of their health care,” Hines said. “I think people will get involved in their health care through education and our goal here is to educate the community.”
