On behalf of the Board of Governors and the entire Abbey community Iwish to take this opportunity to welcome you all, especially last year’s fifthyear group and their parents to this very important evening in the Abbeycalendar. This group will receive their G.C.S.E. certificates tonight, a fittingreward for five years hard work that marks the beginning of their adult life.

I would also like to congratulate the other award winners acknowledgedtonight. These include “Best in Class”,“Most Improved in Class” and “Bestin Key Stage 3”.

I have pleasure in welcoming back to his Alma Mater our distinguishedguest speaker Mr Kevin Fitzpatrick and I would like to thank him foraccepting our invitation to attend this evening. As you can see from ourAwards Booklet, Kevin completed seven successful years in the Abbeywhere he achieved both his ‘O’ level and ‘A’ level qualifications before goingon to study at third level. Kevin has been very successful in keeping hisfamily business at the forefront of the waste water treatment industry andas Managing Director of FM environmental has been largely responsible forthe growth of a very successful local company.

I wish to congratulate all our students on their many successes over a wide range of academic and extra-curricularactivities. I would also like to offer a very special thank you to the parents of all these young men for the enthusiasticand continued support they have given to the school.

Lastly on behalf of myself and the Board of Governors’ I would like to express our appreciation of our excellent anddedicated staff who work enthusiastically with your sons in preparing them not only in the academic sphere but inall aspects of their education.

In conclusion I hope that you will enjoy the presentations tonight and I invite you to join us for some lightrefreshments in the school canteen at the end of the evening.

Career:Kevin has had several periods of employment in America and Australiabefore settling into the family business. He took a year out to travel beforegetting married and had a 6-month work placement with an EnvironmentalEngineering company in Boston while studying there at the same time.After about 15 years with FM Environmental he took over the running ofthe company in 2003.

Personal:He is married with four children and interests include travel and general sports. He is a big fan of West BromwichAlbion and the Boston Red Sox and competes in Triathlons. His ambition is to complete an Ironman Triathlon for his40th birthday!

Company:FM Environmental Limited incorporates a group of business operations, which provide specialist services to the pumpand wastewater treatment industry. Based at its Head Office in Newry, Northern Ireland, with regional offices inLimerick and Malta, the group offers a comprehensive range of design, manufacturing, contracting and installationservices as it pursues its corporate drive towards a cleaner environment.These services cover the private and publicsectors and have been built on over forty years experience in these fields. Kevin is currently the Managing Director.

Pupils that were recognised for achieving individual success either inside or outsideschool at the Abbey Grammar Achievement Prize giving ceremony. Included withMr. Raymond Cassidy, Guest Speaker and Mr. Dermot McGovern, Headmaster areConor McCormick (Rugby), Michael McCann (Sailing), Ryan Walsh, GavinDonnelly and Sean Donnelly (Kickboxing), Colum Mackey (Trampolining), DanMadden (Irish Dancing), Adam Magill (Art), Niall Burke (Fundraising) andLaurence McGivern (Special Award).

Drama and Debating were acknowledged at the Abbey Grammar Achievement PrizeGiving Ceremony. Conor McKeown was Best Supporting actor in WarrenpointDrama Festival. He also had a lead role in the Ulster Youth Theatre. Conal O’Harewas Best actor in Warrenpoint Drama Festival. Philip McClory was first in theSenior School Debating Competition. Ryan Martin was third in this competition.Paul Mallon, Niall O’Donnell, Conor Fox and David McCracken won the ‘MentalHealth Awareness’ debating competition. Garbhan McKevitt, Conor Shields andDarren Marshall were first, second and third in the school’s ‘Hardspell’ competition

Niall O’Flaherty came second in the All-Ireland ‘A’ Shot Putt and Peter O’Hare came second in the All-Ireland ‘B’ HighJump.
