GREETINGS FROM THE ExECuTIvE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe that we are already moving into the second decade of the century. We face many new challenges, but have made major advancements in conquering some of the ones from the past. Here at the West Side YMCA we have invested in our programs and equipment to enhance your experience—both in the facility and in your everyday life—by providing you and your entire family with the essentials for healthy living.

Whether it’s yoga, swim lessons, acting or art classes, the West Side YMCA truly has something for everyone of any age. I love coming to work every day and seeing our community of diverse members interacting with one another like old friends or neighbors. It’s truly a family here at the Y and I’m so proud to be a part of it.

I’m also thankful for your support that allows us to open our doors to those who need our help. From providing kids with the opportunity to attend camp, to providing a safe and constructive place for teens to meet and learn, your dollars are used to make a difference in the lives of thousands of New Yorkers each day.

I wish you health, happiness, and prosperity in the New Year!

Warm regards,Eileen O’ConnorVice President, OperationsExecutive Director, West Side YMCA

Summer Camp programs at the West Side YMCA & GNHY are as unique as the campers themselves. We focus on developing the whole child through programs that support children’s social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual development. We do this by designing programs that help youth develop communication skills, engage in problem solving, learn through critical thinking and contribute to designing the programs they participate in each day. The West Side YMCA & GNHY also aims to build self-esteem and a young person’s Developmental Assets through our camp programs by focusing children on their strengths. Regardless of age, every camper will go on trips, participate in swim lessons, playsports, discovertheimportanceoflivingalifefulloffitnessandnutrition, learn about values and good character and leave with lasting memories and new friends. Pick up the West Side YMCA and Grosvenor Neighborhood House YMCA 2011 Summer Camp Guide for a full description of all our programs and prices. The West Side YMCA Co-op Nursery School was founded in 1964 by a group of parents in the Lincoln Center area who wanted greaterinvolvementintheirchild’sfirstschool experience. It is now a vital part of the West Side YMCA. Our commitment is to provide a nurturing environment where each child’s development and positive self-image are enhanced. Our classrooms are rich in hands on experiences that provided a wide world of discovery for our children.

We believe strongly that young children learn through their play and their experi-ences. The Co-op Nursery School offers a rich, supportive learning and socialization environment for young children. Social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth is fostered through a balanced, develop-mentally appropriate program. Children need time to explore, experiment, and play in their own way while at the same time they are being prepared for ongoing school experiences.

Our daily program includes free-choice activities, outdoor play, group time, story and music time. In addition to plenty of open-ended play, there are several special projects or activities daily including, cooking, science, art, swimmingandfieldtrips. As part of the West Side YMCA, the Co-op Nursery School is committed to a

multi-cultural program that encourages children to grow as individuals and become sensitive and responsive to others.

Our parents have the unique experience to participate in their child’s classroom as the “helping parent” on a regular basis. They see the curriculum develop, watch children interact, and gain a perspective into the work of our teachers. Most importantly, our parents’ presence demonstrates the value of the school and their commitment to our program. Along with “helping parent”, each family has the opportunity to serve on a school committee.

Admissions:Parents interested in the school should call in the Fall prior to the September entry to request and application. Once you have received the application each family will nee to participate in a school tour. After submitting your application and touring the school, we require that each child participate in a playgroup experience with a member of our staff.

Tender Care values each child’s unique personality and temperament. The development of independence, trust and initiative is fostered through a balanced program of free play and structure, quiet and active play, and group and individual time. Learning centers in each room include science, dramatic play, block building, library, art, music and manipulative materials. The children in Tender Care go outdoors each day and take advantage of the many play spaces in Central Park. In addition, there are special classes in swimming, science music and gym. SuMMER ARTS CAMP

Of course, the YMCA is known for swimming and basketball, but in camp we also celebrate the artist, actor or playwright that lives inside all young people. Studies show that young people with experiences rich in the arts have better grade-point averages; score better on standardized tests in reading and math and have lower dropout rates than students without such encounters.

The West Side YMCA’s Summer Arts Camp allows all young people, regardless of previous ability, to learn to paint, write, sing, and act. Using the amazing artistic resources found in New York City, the YMCA partners with local artists, museums, theaters and artistic groups to offer a one of a kind summer arts experience!

Weekly Family Shares: Every week we invite families to join our campers and staff to get a glimpse of what’s been going on at camp. Shares have included a camper concert, coffee house reading, family ceramics, dance recital and the Peanut Gallery.

End-of-Summer Show Spectacular: Our exciting end-of-summer show in 2010 was a camper-written adaptation of the beloved Maurice Sendak book Where the Wild Things Are, and was held in the spectacularly renovated Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater.

Past Workshops: A theatre workshop with the Amas Musical Theater Company, Shakespeare at Wave Hill, an animation workshop with artist from Tribeca Film Festival percussion and rhythm workshop with African Dance and Drums, a kick line and precision dance workshop with a Radio City Music Hall Rockette, and an afternoon exploring reading with volunteers from Morgan Stanley.

Known as the best place to learn how to do the breast stroke or make a jump shot, the West Side YMCA is also focused on enriching your creative side too.

Arts at the Y have long been a staple in the Upper West Side community, starting with the popular reading rooms in the late 1800s. Founded in 1929, the Little Theater has long helped artists such as Tennessee Williams, Kirk Douglas, Etta James, Blake Edwards and Bob Hope, among many others, hone their crafts. Our Writer’s Voice and ArtWorks programs founded here in the 1980’s, have nourished authors and artists of all levels, from beginners to profession-als, giving them the opportunity to develop, exhibit, and read their works.

These days our programs welcome artists of all levels and from all walks of life. Creativity is valued and freedom of expression encouraged.
