Known as theboating and familydestination of theFlorida Keys,

Marathon truly is the perfect place to vaca-tion; conveniently located in the middle ofthe Keys island chain and situated withinclose proximity to world-class fishing

spots, spectacular reefs and many other ex-citing aquatic activities.

This past month, the NeighborhoodNews Family was fortunate enough to ex-perience first-hand the beauty thatMarathon had to offer, on our week vaca-tion to the Florida Keys.

Almost as important as the destina-tion itself are the accommodations, whichcan easily make or break a vacation – let’s

just say the house we stayed at was all wecould ask for and more; the perfect combi-nation of Keys charm and comfortable lux-ury living. Nestled on nearly three acres ofbeautifully landscaped property on theFlorida Gulf, complete with a tidal poolfull of wildlife and boasting breathtakingviews of the open Gulf waters and themost magnificent sunsets one could possi-bly imagine, the house was an absolutedream. Not to mention, it was located onthe gulf side, right near the Vaca cut, so wehad the best of both worlds – the serenityand peacefulness of the gulf waters and in-stant access to the ocean for fishing andsnorkeling on the coral reef.

Found abundantly throughout theFlorida Keys and the southern tip of thestate, the Florida Spiny Lobster is aseafood delicacy and just one of the manyreasons we decided to vacation to theKeys. Almost as exciting to catch as theyare to eat, Florida Spiny Lobsters provide athrilling adrenaline rush, from the mo-ment you see their antennae sticking outof the lobster holes to the time you havethem safe and secure in your net.

Waking up bright and early to thesmell of fresh salt-water air and the relax-ing sound of rolling waves, each morningmy husband and I went out for an earlymorning dive and the chance to catch

These multi-colored discs aremade of 100% cotton – this means noplastic for your dog to break so youdon’t have to worry about theirmouths being hurt by sharp edges. Infact, these toys are veterinarian-ap-proved and highly recommended as thecrochet weave acts as dental floss onyour dog's teeth. They are tough, durable, washable and easy to stuff intoa pocket or tote bag and the bright col-ors and striking design are truly

unique. All dogs, regardless of age or

breed, need mental stimulation andoutlets for their energy throughout theday. At Dogism they have dog toys forjust that. Toys like the pooch ball andtreat house provide mental stimulationfor your dog when it is stuck insidewithout anything to do.

Dog Training When it comes to training, Renee

uses the same individualized approach

for each and every dog. She real-izes that no two dogs are alikewhen it comes to personalitiesand understands that the trainingapproach that works for one dogmay not be successful for an-other; which is why she meetswith each of her clients for a freeconsultation to talk to themabout their dog, his/her currentbehavior and the type of behaviorthe dog owner is hoping for. Shealso gets information about thedog’s day-to-day activities andthe home environment.

Using this information, Renee tai-lors a dog training plan geared specifi-cally for your dog. Penny Noriega says,“Renee Russell of Dogism Traininghelped me with a problem I was havingwith a foster poodle. She observed himand his behavior and recommendedsome actions I could take to distracthim or reduce his excitement. Weworked with him until he could calmlymeet other dogs. I will definitely useher again when other foster poodleshave behavior issues.”

Renee offers a full range of train-ing options for pooches of all ages, from puppies to full-grown dogs, whoare in need of obedience or potty train-ing. She can also help to redirect an ag-

gressive or reactive dog. In addition tobehavior training, Renee helps individ-uals train their dogs for shows or com-petitions.

When Linda Fontan was havingagility and behavior issues with her dogBlossom she turned to Renee for help.“Renee provided me with one-on-onetips on what was causing these prob-lems and gave me advice on how to re-solve them,” states Linda. “This is notthe only time Renee has assisted mewith agility and behavior issues. I canalways count on her.”

If your dog’s behavior isn’t whereyou want it to be, Renee’s private train-ing will help set your dog up to suc-ceed. Some dogs only have a fewbehavior issues they need help with andsome have more, which is why Reneetailors her training specifically to meetthe needs of each individual and dogand does not have a minimum or maxi-mum number of training sessions. Shewill work with you and your dog untilthe situation is resolved.

Arry’s Roofing Services, Inc. and the Advantages of Owning a Metal RoofBy: Katie Thomas

James "Arry" Housh has been ac-tively involved in the roofing industryfor thirty years. Alongside his wifeBecky Housh and with the help oftheir two sons Stephen and Matthew,he runs the reputable Arry's Roofing,a company dedicated to providingquality craftsmanship and exceptionalcustomer service. The Housh family'sdedication has enabled Arry's Roofingto expand their small, honorable andtrustworthy family-run business intothe well-known and trusted companyit is today; servicing residential, com-mercial and industrial projects with

value and integrity.I recently spoke to Matt regard-

ing metal roofing and the benefits itprovides homeowners. Arry’s Roofingfully supports the advantages of metalroofing. The crew at Arry’s Roofingare specialists in metal roofing, andArry’s in-house custom sheet metalshop allows metal roofing specialists tocustomize your roof to be an exact fitfor your house and your designs.

Matt says, “Metal roofing is moreof a craftsmanship and an art, similarto tile. In the early 2000s we saw theadvantages of metal roofing andstarted our metal roofing shop, trainedour guys specifically in metal roofing

and began tocreate a reputa-tion of beingmetal roofingspecialists.”

MetalAdvantages

Metalroofing isknown to beinitially moreexpensive thanother roofingtypes at first glance, but in the longrun metal roofing can save homeown-ers money due to its durability, energy

efficiency and ability to increase theresale value of your home.

Matt explains that the averagelifespan of a non-metal roof is sev-enteen years; whereas metal roofingis proven to last 2-3 times longerwith fewer repairs than other typesof roofing materials. When installedby the right metal roof specialists, metal roofing can last for longerthan 50 years with little mainte-nance. Having a metal roof is ex-tremely beneficial, especially in

Florida, because there is no other roofcomposite that is as strong and asdurable as a metal roof, which if in-stalled properly can effectively with-stand the harsh Florida winds andstorms.

If you are a homeowner and areseeking out a way to reduce the priceof your energy bill and would like tobuild a roof with energy-saving mate-rial, Arry’s Roofing recommends youlook into getting a metal roof. Metalroofing is economically sustainable andbetter for the environment than manytraditional types of materials, such aspetroleum-based shingles.

some lobsters – we had great success, andfound some of the biggest lobsters we hadever seen!

Another reason we chose the FloridaKeys was for the deep-sea fishing, as theKeys offer some of the most diverse andplentiful sport fishing in the world. Ourfish of choice was the Dorado (betterknown as Mahi Mahi) – in my opinionone of the most exciting fish to catch andcertainly one of the best tasting – andwithin two days of fishing we had enoughMahi Mahi to feed the entire family, all 14

of us, and were even left with a plentifulamount to take home.

Wahoo, one of the fastest fish in theocean – reaching record speeds of nearly50 mph – was another fish we had thepleasure of coming across, and with expertskill and fishing technique my husbandwas able to catch this 40 pound, 54 inchbeauty.

The Florida Keys are widely recog-nized for their abundant aquatic wildlifeand exquisite coral reefs and if you visitMarathon, Sombrero Reef is a must-seeadventure. Sombrero Reef Marine Sanctu-ary and Lighthouse, a traditional favoriteof Marathon, is just one of the manybeautiful reefs that the Florida Keys has to

As a group of 14, ranging in agefrom five to older adult, it is not alwayseasy to please everyone, but this houseand destination managed to do just thatand more, and the experiences we sharedmade for a wonderful vacation full ofmemories we will cherish forever.

The ocean truly is a magnificenthabitat, home to millions of species of fishand wildlife, some hidden just beneath thesurface of the water, while others living inthe deep depths near the ocean floor. The

Keys showcase some of the most beautiful, exotic wildlife that the ocean has to offerand one thing is for sure, whether snorkel-ing or scuba diving the coral reefs, fishingthe flats or the open ocean, kayaking theback-country, or sailing from island to is-land, Marathon is the perfect setting forany dream vacation!

Last week I was at an awards ceremonyand was sitting at a table in the back ofa meeting room and actually heard myname called. Before Alvarez Audiology,I would not have heard my name. Theonly thing greater than the product Ipurchased is the quality of service that Ireceive from all the staff at AlvarezHearing.”

Dr. Alvarez is a leader in the field, graduating with honors from the Uni-versity of South Florida with a Bache-lor's degree in CommunicationSciences and Disorders and a clinicalDoctorate in Audiology. During hertraining, Dr. Alvarez completed resi-dencies with the Department of Vet-eran's Affairs, All Children's Hospital, and several private practice clinics. Dr.Alvarez is a board certified Audiologist, and is a Fellow of the American Acad-emy of Audiology.

Dr. Alvarez specializes in geriatricaural rehabilitation and provides serv-ices to children as young as five toadults a hundred years and older. As ahighly trained audiologist she is able toexpertly identify, diagnose and treat

many different forms of hearing lossand focuses not only on hearing lossand prevention, but on how hearingloss affects you. Dr. Alvarez is accompa-nied by office manager Blair, and to-gether they provide the Westchase Areawith a welcoming experience for all.

Dr. Alvarez spends quality timewith each patient and goes to greatlengths to ensure that every patientleaves 100% satisfied. Dr. Alvarez says,“I place a strong importance on follow-up and keep an open line of communi-cation with my patients. I see myestablished patients about every threemonths for routine evaluations and earcheck-ups and conduct follow-up testsat least once a year.” To Dr. Alvarez, listening to her patients is just as impor-tant as the tests she conducts andalongside Blair, goes above and beyondto establish long-lasting relationshipswith all of the patients at Alvarez Audi-ology.

When it comes to hearing aidsthere is no such thing as “one hearingaid fits all,” which is why Dr. Alvarezworks with each individual patient withattentiveness and genuine care. She be-lieves that fitting you successfully with ahearing aid is more than just fittingyour hearing loss – it is listening to you

and your personal needs and tak-ing the time to get to know youand what is best for you!

“Dr. Alvarez is not an ordi-nary hearing professional,” stateshappy patient Mercedes.

“She goes above and beyondthe call of duty in providing ex-ceptional hearing health care. Shehas always been there for myhearing aids. I have called andshe has provided help on thesame day. She is very attentive ofmy needs and does an outstand-ing job. My daughter is verypleased with how well I am nowhearing and I owe it all to Dr. Al-varez!”

People experience hearingloss for many different reasons, and regardless of the cause, lossof hearing – whether it be minoror substantial – should never beignored.

Presbycusis, the most com-mon cause of hearing loss, is thegradual loss of hearing that occursas people get older and many peo-ple believe that this is a normal re-sult of aging – this is not at all true!“Hearing loss is never normal,” ex-plains Dr. Alvarez. “It just happens to

become more prevalent as people age.” Noise Exposure is the second most

prevalent cause of hearing loss, and issomething that can be easily avoided,

which is why Dr. Alvarez stresses theimportance of taking special precau-tions to help prevent hearing loss andpreserve healthy hearing – such as theuse of customized noise-protection earplugs for those who are constantly ex-posed to loud noise and custom audiomonitors, which carefully control levelsof sound heard while maintaining pris-
