Students build skills and experience

A utistic children at Cambridge Park High School will now have a comfortable environ-

ment to enjoy during recess and lunch after the school, with help from Bunnings Warehouse North Penrith, renovated the Support Offi ce courtyard recently.

Team members from Bunnings Warehouse have been helping the school to install a shade sail, paint the fl oor, attach bamboo screening to the area, assemble garden beds and affi x decking to the walls to help create a suitable environment for the children at the school.

“The aim was to create an outdoor learning environment and provide the students with the opportunity to participate in the activity,” Principal of the school, Kay Rigas said.

The renovation has helped the children build their skills with the garden helping to teach the students how to care for plants

For the past few weeks the autistic students have been work-ing with Bunnings Warehouse to ensure the area will be ready for them to use within the next week after the weather delayed the progress.

“There are 24 autistic children at the school and they can all fi t comfortably in this space that will hopefully feel like it’s their own,” Ms Rigas said.

New show on the way‘Restaurant Revolution’

is a new multi-night reality show which sees ordinary Australians charged with designing and running their own pop-up restaurant.

Channel Seven will air the series later this year.

W all art is a great way to create interest in your home but it can be tricky to

Before you start putting nails in walls sit down and think about what you want to achieve in the space you’re working with.

Consider the focal point of the room, it might be a window or a mantlepiece or a mirror.

Your art should complement and work in harmony with these focal points by adding visual interest to the voids of the room.

To create a cohesive look take

into account the colour palettes of the pieces you are working with. No matter what style you’ve chosen picking up accent colours between diff erent pieces will help to create a good balance.

When it comes to placement try laying out your artworks on the fl oor to work out the best arrange-ment.

Keep your house secure

Padlocks: When it comes to garage or shed doors, make sure you use a heavy duty padlock. Even though they can be broken into, the time and noise taken to do so may deter any potential thief.

Turn the alarm on: Make it part of your daily routine to put your alarm on. An alarm sounding will certainly alert neighbours to something going on and most likely send thieves running away.

Are you at home? A good trick is to make any potential thief think you may be at home. Don’t close your curtains during the day, as this could suggest your home is empty with nobody inside. You should even consider using automatic time switches.

Be consistent! If you have a garage, put the car inside. If you leave it in the driveway all the time, it’ll be obvious to a potential thief when you are or aren’t home.

How to reduce your winter heating costs

W inter is upon us! With many of us fl icking the switch to turn on the heat-

ing as the cooler months draw in, it’s worth looking at ways to reduce our heating costs (and cooling in the summer months) and in turn our carbon footprint.

Is it time to renovate your bathroom?

W hen taking on a project like a bath-room renovation you can generally

go two ways. You can renovate yourself or hire

a professional to do all the work. When doing the renovation

yourself some of the things you should take into consideration are:

Room design – decide where you want to place your items, remem-bering that the toilet is the most costly to relocate if needed.

Walls – is there asbestos involved? If so, you will need a professional to remove it.

Bricks may require wall chasing, if you are changing things around.

What’s behind the walls are the pipes, galvanized steel, copper or one of the many plastics available now.

Are the electrical cables to the correct standard?

Has the timber started to rot out?Have you another toilet or

shower you can use, if not you may need to look at hiring a port-able shower/toilet.

Then of course you need to pick your tiles, toilets, basins and tap ware.

When ordering your toilet make sure the outlet will line up with your existing drainage.

Otherwise you will have to divert the drainage which can be quite costly especially if the tiling has been completed.

You can do some of the physical work yourself except where it comes to plumbing, electrical or major structural work where you will need to hire the appropriate tradesperson.

In doing so fi rstly check their licenses on the fair trading website at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au.

Otherwise you can hire a bath-room renovation company that

takes care of the lot. And then you don’t have to lift a fi nger!

See how long they have been trading for and if they are local, have they done any bathrooms in the area.

A good company will be able to provide all the trades required for your bathroom renovation.

Of course check their license and try to get at least two quotes.

Make sure you explain exactly what you want, even a sketch of what you would like, with some brochures of bathroom fi xtures to help to stop any confusion

Renovating a bathroom is no easy task but given we spend so much time in there, it’s always a good idea.

Make sure you do your research and answer all the questions you need to before you begin.

Give your front door maximum impact

W hen you’re plan-ning a renovation most people are focused on all the

bigger areas like the bathroom, kitchen or living space. These types of projects take time and can require a nice sized budget. Spaces like the kitchen or bath-room can also take up a lot of time, and aren’t always short term targets. An easy and quick way to add personality and atmosphere to your home is to update the entrance.

The entry to your house is the fi rst thing people see when they arrive, and the last thing they remember when they leave.

It makes your house stand out, and adds that all important “street appeal”.

Sometimes the smallest trans-formations, make the biggest impact.

Below, we outline the steps

to creating a perfectly painted front door:

1. Remove the front door from the doorframe and place on sawhorses or a stable bench. (Remember to use a drop sheet underneath!). Then, remove any hardware like handles and hinges from the door.

2. Mask any glass panels (if you have them) and clean the door with sugar soap. Selleys have one of the best ones around. Allow enough time for the door to dry.

3. If the existing paint on the door is in good condition then you don’t need to worry about using a primer. If not, lightly sand and apply one coat of oil-based primer before painting.

4. Once the primer dries, apply one coat of paint (from top to the bottom) to the door. Leave to dry and then repeat.

5. Once the paint on the door is dry, and you are happy with the coverage, re-attach the hardware and hang the door.

Oh, and remember to choose a paint/fi nish that is suitable for exterior use. We would recom-mend high gloss aqua enamel paint for a front door, but talk to a local paint speciality store.
