By rolling up a sleeve, donors can help ensure patients continue to receive treatment throughout the holiday season. Busy holiday schedules and travel plans make it more challenging for regular donors to give, and many business- es and organizations postpone hosting blood drives during the holiday season for these same reasons. This can lead to a decline in blood donations, but the need is constant. “While many of us gather with friends and family this time of year, patients may spend the holidays in a hospital room,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager of the Red Cross Indiana Ohio Blood Services Region. “The need for blood doesn’t take a break for the holidays. Please make an appointment to give the most meaningful gift of all – the gift of life through a blood or platelet donation.” Power Red maximizes donations Blood donors with type O, B negative and A negative blood can help more patients with one appointment by making a Power Red donation at select Red Cross blood donation centers and blood drives. Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells – the most common- ly transfused blood component. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body and are frequently give to trauma and surgery patients. During a Power Red donation, red blood cells are separated from other blood components, and plasma and platelets are then safely and comfortably returned to the donor. “With just a little extra time at their appointment, donors can have an even greater impact on patients in need,” added Wilson. The gifts were stacked high behind tables and we, literally, were kids in a toy store as we surveyed the toys, deciding on the perfect one. My mom would venture into Kenley's Supermarket with her list of ingredients for fudge, cookies and candy. My batch of fudge would never contain nuts. Bleck! My dad would pick up bags of hard ribbon candy and of course...chocolate covered cherries. Isn't it strange that certain sweets are never made or bought except at Christmas. We picked out our real tree from either the lot at the old Dairy Queen or from Chad Phillips's yard on the corner of 12th and Central. Tinsel and bubble lights were carefully arranged on each branch. My Mom directed the kids program where we recited our "pieces" that she chose for each child. Some kids had stage fright. Some kids cried. Some just stood and waved to their parents. Funny thing is that I still remember my first piece. "I'm the littlest one in my family but I can do my part. I want to live for Jesus and have Him come into my heart." By COREY SYLVESTERAt this time of year your life is probably more hectic than usual ndash so you may have

assembled an impressive ldquoto dordquo list This can be a helpful tool fororganizing your activities in the near future ndash but have you everthought of developing a ldquoto dordquo list for long-term goals such as acomfortable retirement If not you may want to think about it ndash andhere are a few list-worthy items to consider

Examine ndash and re-examine ndash your planned retirement age Youmay have long counted on retiring at a certain age but are you surethat this goal is the best one for your overall financial situation Thinkabout it If you like your job and you stayed at it for just a few moreyears you could significantly boost the funds in your 401(k) or otherretirement plan and you might even be able to delay taking Social

Security which in turn would result in larger monthly payments Put a ldquoprice tagrdquo on your retirement lifestyle When you retire do you want to travelthe world or stay at home pursuing your hobbies Will you truly retire from all types ofwork or will you do some consulting or take up part-time employment Once you knowwhat your retirement lifestyle might look like you can better estimate your costs andexpenses ndash and this knowledge will help you determine how much you need to withdraweach year from your various retirement accounts such as your IRA 401(k) or otheremployer-based plan Be aware of retirement plan withdrawal rules It isnrsquot enough just to recognize howmuch you need to withdraw from your retirement plans ndash you also must know how muchyou must withdraw Once you turn 70 frac12 you generally have to start taking money outof your traditional IRA and 401(k) These required minimum distributions or RMDsare based on your account balance age and other factors but the key word to rememberis ldquorequiredrdquo ndash if you donrsquot withdraw the full amount of the RMD by the applicabledeadline the amount not withdrawn can be taxed at a 50 percent rate Review your health care situation When you turn 65 you will likely be eligible forMedicare but yoursquoll want to become familiar with what it does ndash and doesnrsquot ndash coverso you can establish an annual health care budget And if you are planning to retire earlywhich might mean losing your employer-sponsored health insurance you will need tobe prepared for potentially large out-of-pocket costs Think about long-term care One service that Medicare doesnrsquot cover ndash or at bestcovers only minimally ndash is long-term care If you faced an extended stay in a nursinghome the costs could be catastrophic A financial professional may be able to help youfind a way to reduce this risk Develop your estate plans Estate planning can be complex involving many differentdocuments ndash such as a will a living trust power of attorney etc ndash so yoursquoll want towork with a legal professional to ensure yoursquore making the right choices for yourselfand your family

By checking off these items one by one your retirement ldquoto dordquo list will eventuallyget ldquodonerdquo And when that happens you may find yourself pretty well prepared to enjoylife as a retiree

Shamrocks tough out first-ever title

By RICHIE HALLReporter Sports EditorWestfields first-ever state championship

football team was coached by a man whowas mentored by one of the all-time greats

No wonder the Shamrocks playSaturday evening at Lucas Oil Stadium wasso entertaining

Westfield won the Class 5A title with agritty 16-13 victory over Columbus EastThis was the third time that the Shamrockshave appeared in the state finals and itwould be tempting to say third time luckyBut luck had nothing to do with Westfieldsvictory

This season to be honest I absolutelythought we could do it said Shamrockscoach Jake Gilbert who played football forlegendary coach Dick Dullaghan back whenhe was at Ben Davis So Im not going to

act like Im shocked But over the course ofsix years for this to really happen God isgood Thats the only explanation We weremeant to come here this was meant tohappen The support weve gotten the staffweve put together and the sheer work thatthese kids have put in And the way thatthese kids have loved each other is justuncommon

Westfield won the game with two thingsthat have powered it along the entire seasonDefense and special teams The latter waseasily identifiable on the scoreboard as ittranslated into nine points from three fieldgoals by Will Harrison

The senior got the first score of the gameat the 714 mark of the first quarter whenhe kicked a 52-yarder Thats nothing newfor Harrison as he booted a 53-yard fieldgoal last week in the Shamrocks semi-state

win over Fort Wayne Snider But it was anew 5A state championship record

Harrison kicked two more field goals inthe second period a 44-yarder with 745 leftin the quarter and a 42-yard kick with 332remaining

It just feels amazing said HarrisonMy teams around me and Im around theteam Its just an amazing feeling When allof those three went in it was just amazing

If Wills not 3-for-3 on field goals lastweek we dont win said Gilbert If hesnot 3-for-3 on field goals this week we dontwin The man has kicked six field goals intwo weeks

Harrisons kicks helped keep Westfieldwithin distance when the Olympians scored13 points in the second quarter Both ofColumbus Easts touchdowns were by passThe first came with 941 left when Josh

Major connected with Caleb Voelker for a32-yard reception But Jackson Garrettblocked the Olympians extra point attempt

Harrisons field goals made the score 9-6with seconds left in the first half ButColumbus East would score right at the endJamon Hogan lateraled the ball to Voelkerwho then threw the ball to Tyler Thomaswho was waiting right inside the goal lineHe caught the ball for the touchdown andSam Thomassons extra point kick made thehalftime score 13-9

The Shamrocks held the Olympians to athree-and-out in their first drive of thesecond half then put together a touchdown-scoring drive of their own Nate Froelich andquarterback Andrew Sweet marched the balldown the field and Froelich finished up the

drive by running four yards into the endzone Harrison did his part by convertingthe extra point attempt

That would be the last score of thegame but there would still be some bigplays to be made on the defensive endPerhaps the biggest was late in the thirdquarter when Columbus East was tryingto answer Westfields score

The Olympians drove their way downto the Shamrocks 1-yard line but a penalty

pushed them back to the 6 Columbus Eastsent its field goal unit out but it was a fakeNever fear - Justin Frey was there to pushthe Olympians Jonah Wichman out ofbounds and thus force a turnover on downs

I thought it was a huge play saidFrey It was a big momentum shift Westopped them three times on the goal linewhich was great by our defense Our D-lineplayed amazing all game

The defensive momentum carriedWestfield through the fourth quarter TheShamrocks forced Columbus East to puntwith 802 left then chewed up almost fiveminutes of clock in their next drive andalso got the Olympians to use one of theirtimeouts

Columbus East had one last drive with306 remaining but two holding penaltiesforced the Olympians back to their own3-yard line Josh Major made an 18-yardrun on 3rd-and-25 to get to his teams21-yard line but Caleb Sanburn stoppedhim on 4th-and-7 after a gain of two yardsWestfield took over and kneeled it out

I just say our experience playing 6Ateams and the tough schedule we have inthe regular season just kept us going said

Sweet We knew how to battle throughclose games and we did that tonight

Sweet finished the game 6-for-10 for57 yards with Evan Manley making fourreceptions for 44 yards Froelich carriedthe ball 15 times for 96 yards including hisbig touchdown run

Hank Grenda and Josh Tuffnell ledWestfields defense with 10 tackles eachGrenda made six solo stops and had fourassists while Tuffnell had four solo tacklesand six assists Byron Hubbard made 15sacks while Calvin Caldwell had twotackles for a loss

This was the third time the Shamrocksappeared in the football state finalsWestfield reached the 2A title game in1992 and played the 5A final in 2013

By COREY SYLVESTERAt this time of year your life is probably more hectic than usual ndash so you may have

assembled an impressive ldquoto dordquo list This can be a helpful tool fororganizing your activities in the near future ndash but have you everthought of developing a ldquoto dordquo list for long-term goals such as acomfortable retirement If not you may want to think about it ndash andhere are a few list-worthy items to consider

This was the third time the Shamrocksappeared in the football state finalsWestfield reached the 2A title game in1992 and played the 5A final in 2013

Harrison kicked two more field goals inthe second period a 44-yarder with 745 leftin the quarter and a 42-yard kick with 332remaining

drive by running four yards into the endzone Harrison did his part by convertingthe extra point attempt

This was the third time the Shamrocksappeared in the football state finalsWestfield reached the 2A title game in1992 and played the 5A final in 2013
