Homelessness In Westminster In the May 9th issue of the Westminster Window, columnist Bill Christopher contrasted living conditions in Westminster, Colorado between the time he moved here in 1968 and today. In 1968, spotting a homeless person in the city of Westminster was unheard of. Then a city of 18,000 residents, Westminster was booming, but remained an affordable suburb of the burgeoning Denver metro area. But by 2019, a new and more ruthless economic environment has made affordable housing in Westminster a major challenge. Based on seasonal point-in-time surveys, it is estimated that on any given night approximately 110 homeless persons, singles, families, women and children, reside in Westminster in places not meant for human habitation. Some sleep in their cars or encamp in undeveloped spaces off-trails. If we expand the count to include families who reside in temporary quarters such as motels or doubled up with extended family because of their inability to afford a residence, Christopher estimates that 5,855 pre-K through 12th grade students fall in this gap, including 1000 children who at one point during the year will experience homelessness. Based on school enrollment data, Adams County has the highest rate of student homelessness in all of Colorado's counties and together with Jefferson County, compromise 28% of all of Colorado's homeless youth. So what can we do as a church to help our neighbors? Food ministries are the most cost-effective way to support the greatest number of households. FISH of Westminster, co-hosted by Westminster Presbyterian Church and Westminster United Methodist Church, is the largest food pantry provider in the city of Westminster, together providing nutrition support to over 1000 people per month. Affordable housing and emergency housing, though, are a different story. The combined shelter capacity of all the agencies that house homeless people in Adams County is approximately 60-70 beds per night. Compared to the estimated 500 homeless who reside in all of Adams County on a given night this number is depressingly small. When members of the church present scenarios of persons in need to me, one of the hardest answers I often have to give is that for that night there is no where to go. While motels can be a stopgap, the harsh reality is that our city and county have not fully accepted responsibility for the homeless on our streets. We lack a public overnight shelter, let alone a proper day center where folks can stay warm, shower, rest and eat. If not for the hospitality of our public libraries, many of our street residents would truly have no where to go. I urge us as a church to make care of our homeless a public issue worthy of our concern. Do your part to keep homelessness and affordable housing as top priorities for our elected officials: your city councilors, county commissioner and mayor. Support those public officials who advocate for the most vulnerable among us. This doesn't need to be a partisan issue. Let them know that as residents of Westminster, Arvada or even Adams and Jefferson County, this issue matters to you not only for your personal quality-of-life, but for the values you believe we ought to represent in our county and city budgets.

King Soopers Rewards Update

As some of you have heard, on April 1st King

Soopers changed the way its Community Rewards

program works. They will no longer sell or reload

special gift cards for this program, although any

cards purchased and/or reloaded prior to April 1st

are still valid and will still earn money for

WPC. Once you have used up the balance on

your card it can be discarded, either at the store or

at your home. To continue to participate in the

program you must have a King Soopers loyalty

card and you must register it online

at www.Kingsoopers.com/communityrewards. After setting

up your account, or entering your id and password

if you already have an online account, click on

'enroll now'. You will be taken to the screen from

which you will choose the organization you wish to

support. Search for Westminster Presbyterian

Church either by name or IS687 then click En-

roll. For future earnings remember to swipe your

loyalty card each time you shop at King Soopers or

any of the members of their business group, such

as the pharmacy and the fuel center. No more re-

membering to use and reload your rewards

chosen Charles Frazier ‘s newest

book, Varina. It’s about Varina Davis,

the wife of Jefferson Davis. Little did

Varina know that when she married

him, he would change from being just a

southern gentleman to

becoming the President

of the Confederacy. Her

life took a big turn. Read

the book to find out how

she coped, then join our

humble group for discus-

sion and dessert.

Successful Stewardship

The 2019 stewardship pledge giving was one of the most successful of recent years. This was the result of each and every member of our church stepping up in a significant way to assure a solid income by pledging for 2019. Pledging consistently represents well over fifty percent of church budget income each year, which is why stewardship pledging is so important to support church programs, the work of Pastor David, Session, Deacons, Committees, staff and our volunteers. Other key income besides pledge funds comes from building space rental from B’nai Torah and ADCO Head Start and to a lesser extent loose offering. Occasional member giving makes up other budget income sources. Actual pledge income received for 2018 was $146,676, which result in a deficit budget. Stewardship

pledging commitment by members for 2019 totals $160,923. This encouraging increase comes at an opportune time for our church as we move ahead to continue strong Christian programs for youth and adults and families and respond to new opportunities and needs in the coming year. To all the individual members and families who responded and made encouraging pledges for 2019, we say “Thank You!” We see again how the Westy Pres members continue to support and create opportunities for Christian growth in our church and the broader Westminster community of faith. And to the committee who participated in the fall 2018 stewardship moments for mission, we add a word of appreciation as well. Ron Hellbusch Session

It’s that time again! Mark your calendars for

VBS 2019!

We’d like to invite everyone ages 3+ to our ‘out of this world’ Vacation Bible School! This summer, July 8-12, 2019 from 9 am-12 noon. It’s only $8 per child with a family maximum of $15! Wow! Come join us here at Westy Pres, where we can explore where God’s power can take us while we go to Mars and Beyond! Kids will enjoy a daily bible story, crafts, snacks, science experiments, games, mu-sic, and more! They will make friends and memories that will last forever!

***We still need volunteers for VBS as well! Please let us know if you’re interested, even if you can’t commit to the full week, we’d still love to have you! It’s a lot of fun!***

2 POSITIONS: Pick-Up Driver: FISH is looking for a volunteer to pick-up donations at least every other Friday (or every Friday if possible) at King Soopers. King Soopers donates bakery goods, canned goods, dairy, and/or meat to FISH for us to provide to our clients. This volunteer assignment takes about one hour to drive over to the store (64

th and Sheridan), pick up the donations, drive them back to

church unload the truck and put the donations away. While most boxes are manageable, the fro-zen meat boxes frequently weigh 40+ pounds. Packer: FISH is looking for someone to fill in behind Sue Singleton Thursday afternoons to pack client boxes with sufficient food for 3 days. Sue will be off June and July and needs someone to work for her. The shift is approximately an hour – 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, every Thursday, working with another packer and a greeter. Are you interested in either position? If so – please contact Doris Aldrich at 303-423-9180.

CARE PACKAGES TO HELP THE HOMELESS

FISH routinely serves a few homeless people every month at the food bank. Some of them never thought they would be in this position. Others are chronically homeless and no longer see a way out. Community dinners are frequently the only hot home-cooked meal a homeless person in our neigh-borhood gets. Last fall, we put together 65 packages to pass out to the homeless that come to the church/food bank for assistance. On Sunday, June 9

th, volunteers will again gather to assemble 30 monthly care packages

after coffee fellowship.

“FISH TALES”

NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH LAMB WESTON Lamb Weston – out of Boise, Idaho – sells frozen potato and other frozen products (such as fries, tater tots, and mozzarella sticks) recently donated over 30 pounds of frozen food to FISH. Their local sales representative lives on Bradburn and noticed the painted FISH sign on the green door during a neighborhood walk. She didn’t know we were here until then. As a result, she decided to designate FISH as the recipient when they have excess product to donate!

The Westminster Public Schools is the school district closest to our church and our community. We must consider the district numbers which reflect the people we can serve at Westminster Presbyterian: Total enrollment: 9,453 Students considered food insecure by Federal guidelines: 7,544 (79%) Hispanic/Latino: 7,309 English Language learners: 3,615 HOMELESS: 850 These numbers are students representing families of 2 - 7 members.

Community Dinners

On Thursday, May 30, a congregation new to us will host the community dinner: Baha'i. We welcome them into the diversity of our community dinners. They will serve sausage sandwiches, salad and dessert. We need to supplement their menu and come to the dinner to learn more about their church. Excerpts from their beliefs show how alike we are: "God has sent a series of divine Educa-tors known as Manifestations of God--whose teachings have provided for the advancement of civili-zation. Included are Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad. Baha’u'll'ah was the latest of the Messengers, who explained that the religions of the world came from the same Source and are in essence successive chapters of the same religion from God".
