The Community Campaign Celebration is the Federation’s biggest fundraiser of the year,

traditionally drawing 600 to 1000 people. The event will be held at Signature Grand on Thursday, February 2, 2012, from 6 p.m to 9 p.m.

“Whether playing with ‘The Boss’ or Conan O’Brien, Max Weinberg is known and loved by so many fans of music,” said Eric B. Stillman, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Broward County. “Between his works and his on-stage

performance, he’s certain to strike a familiar note with our members and guests.”

Weinberg, who speaks frequently to colleges and business groups, has been said to link his drumming style to the definition of seder, meaning order. It became central to his ideal that a good drummer serves his band’s music. The New York Times has called Weinberg “the rhythmic backbone of the E Street Band.” He innovated the jump blues style, and today – dressed in suit and tie – is one of the most visible and recorded drummers of the late 20th century. Since the premiere of “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in 1993 and later, “The Tonight Show,” his Max Weinberg 7 has been called

the “best band in late night TV” by The

Washington Post. He also has appeared on numerous “Late Night” comedy sketches. He also has performed at presidential inauguration galas, the Grammy Awards, and the 1995 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dedication in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Max joins a distinguished list of past speakers, including Joshua Malina from the TV show, The West

Wing, U.S. Senator and Florida son Bob Graham, Professor Alan Dershowitz, Gov. Charlie Crist and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel,” added Stillman. “His musical heritage and fan appreciation will make Max a perfect performer for the night’s festivities.”

The 5th Annual Broward Sheriff’s Office Golf Tournament will be hosted

on Saturday, January 28 at the Deerfield Beach Country Club to benefit the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County Fallen Heroes Fund.

This year the Broward Sheriff’s Office Golf Tournament will honor fallen hero Sgt. Christopher Reyka, 51, who was shot and killed outside a Pompano Beach drug store early on the morning of August 10, 2007 while checking license plates for possible stolen vehicles. Reyka is survived by his wife Kim and four children: two daughters and two sons.

“When people realize that the golf tournament benefits the Fallen Heroes Fund and who it is supporting and helps then they open their wallets and really want

to contribute in any way possible,” Captain Rick Wierzbicki says.

“Sheriff Al Lamberti has been

totally supportive of this initiative and he attends the tournament which means a lot for the participants and the families of the fallen heroes,” Captain Wierzbicki adds.

The Fund provides support to the families of deputies and fire rescue personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This fund provides humanitarian assistance to the families and loved ones at the time of death of a deputy or a fire rescue officer, and to help the families with memorial arrangements if necessary.

Over the past four years, the golf tournament has generated more than $170,000 with more than $57,000 generated last year alone. The 2011 Tournament gathered 160 golfers and an additional 40 people attended the luncheon.

The list of sponsors grows each year and the Broward Sheriff’s Office is grateful to the community businesses and restaurants for their support. Captain Wierzbicki is particularly thankful to the Deerfield Country Club representatives Glen Frazier, Larry Wilson and Patty Hayes who played an instrumental role in establishing the Tournament in 2007

to benefit the Fallen Heroes Fund.Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and

the shotgun start is slated for 10 a.m. There will be food, music and fun for everyone with activities including prizes, raffles, auctions and contests such as the hole-in-one, longest drive and closest to the pin.

Deerfield Beach Mayor Peggy Noland is also scheduled to attend the golf tournament and she will participate in the golf ball drop contest.

Tournament attendees will have an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for $20 per ticket and 250 numbered balls. Mayor Noland will be lifted 50 feet in a fire engine rescue bucket and will drop the bucket of golf balls onto the course. The ball that falls closest to the practice pin at the range will win the money 50/50 for the winner and the Fund.

Cost per golfer is $125, including the luncheon. Tickets cost $20.00 per person for the luncheon only.

Angel Nazario, a sweet 4 year-old boy fighting brain cancer, has been chosen to be this year’s Fancy Jeans Child Honoree. Everyone who meets Angel, falls in love with him. He is being treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital where he has undergone surgery and is now currently receiving chemotherapy treatments on a regular basis. Angel’s father was recently laid off from his job and his mother recently returned to work after giving birth to a premature baby, to keep her household of ten afloat. Since the family is unable to make ends meet during this time, the Jessica

June Children’s Cancer Foundation Financial Assistance Program has paid for the family’s rent, electrical and water bills.

The Fancy Jeans Party has been a major source of fundraising for the Emergency Financial Assistance Program, which directly assists children fighting cancer and their families with much needed financial support. Since inception, the Fancy Jeans Parties have raised over $225,000 to help these families meet their everyday basic human necessities, like food, shelter and medical treatments.

Individual tickets to attend the 4th Annual Fancy Jeans Party are $50 in advance and $65 at the door, and VIP tickets are $100 in advance and $125 at the door. The Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation also invites local businesses and individuals to support the Fancy Jeans Party through sponsorships, in-kind donations or program journal advertising. The Foundation serves patients from all seven pediatric oncology hospitals in South Florida and is headquarters at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Last summer, Kendall was enjoying a day at the beach with her parents when she started to display worrisome symptoms including a headache and drooling followed by an inability to walk. Her parents rushed her to West Boca Medical Center where doctors quickly determined she had suffered a stroke. The family was airlifted to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. Kendall underwent brain surgery to remove the cause, a

blood vessel malformation called an AVM. She has since been undergoing intensive physical therapy and rehabilitation for her left side and is recovering much more quickly than doctors expected. The Gillis family has been a constant fixture by Kendall’s side, residing at the Conine Clubhouse for months. Bill will be the featured speaker at the Awards Banquet and will be accompanied by Kendall. They will share their inspiring story.

Proceeds benefit the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation and help underwrite expenses at The Conine Clubhouse, a home-away-from-home for families of children under care at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. To date, more than 7,000 families have been able to reside free of charge since it opened its doors. The 23-room facility has

19 private bedrooms, four suites for larger families and features an Internet and computer-access area for guests to use during their stay.

“It brings Cindy and me great joy to return for our 18th season with the Conine All-Star Golf Classic. With the generous support from our sponsors and the local community, we are able to help many families in need,” said Conine. “What differentiates our event is the quantity and quality of prizes. Many golf tournaments give golfers a goody bag: we give

our golfers a “goody suitcase” which includes a $200 gift card from the Calder Casino Golf Pro Shop. Prizes are awarded at all 18 holes, with chances to win cars or motorcycles

at four hole-in-one contests. We will give away more than $120,000 in prizes and gifts with no expense to our event. Everything is generously donated by event sponsors, area businesses and individuals looking to help.”

Conine knows firsthand the importance of the clubhouse, which opened in 1997 and was named for

Jeff and Cindy six years later in 2003. Their son Tucker, 11, was born prematurely with complications during his first year. The Conines lived at the clubhouse for eight days. “It was an invaluable resource and really helped the healing process. Knowing our child and his caregivers were just across the street provided tremendous emotional comfort,” said Conine.

COMPLEX ADJUSTABLE RATE LOANS SEVERAL YEARS AGO, BB&T KEPT FOCUSING ON THE OTHER LENDING IT HAD USED TO BUILD A HISTORY OF PROFITABILITY.

“Our goal has always been to help consumers and businesses achieve economic success and financial stability,” said Michael Oster, BB&T’s regional president for South Florida. “We didn’t see how making loans that a lot of people might not be able to pay would help them and us reach those goals.”

By staying its course with business lending and traditional mortgages, Winston-Salem, N.C.-based BB&T avoided the real estate problems that are still an issue for many banks. It also has continued to grow in Florida and other states.

In 2012, BB&T will become a bigger player in the fast-changing banking landscape in Broward County and around Florida. The

adjacent chart points to some key developments in how that landscape, and bank names, has kept changing since the 1980s.

The latest big change came on Nov. 1, when BB&T announced an agreement to buy BankAtlantic which has been the largest bank based in Broward.

When the deal is completed, likely in the spring of 2012, BB&T will move up from 11th to fourth place in deposits in Broward, It will have just over $2.5 billion in deposits at approximately 45 offices in the county.

The sale of BankAtlantic will leave Stonegate Bank as the largest bank headquartered in Broward. Stonegate, based in Fort Lauderdale, had $848 million in

assets on Sept. 30. That included business at its branches in several counties on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Stonegate opened in 2005. It quickly became profitable, and among Florida banks it has one of the lowest ratios of problem loans to total loans.

“We decided not to have speculative land and development loans as a major part of our business,” said David Seleski, Stonegate’s president and CEO.

A main reason behind the lingering banking crisis is the large number of loans that were made on condominiums and other housing projects that have not been completed.

Stonegate has what Seleski calls a diversified lending mix of commercial loans, residential mortgages and so-called “owner-occupied loans” for businesses to buy properties they use for their operations.

But many other South Florida-based banks are feeling stymied in their efforts to expand in those areas of lending, said Kenneth Thomas, president of bank consulting firm K. H. Thomas Associates in Miami.

Some of those banks are under enforcement actions from regulators, with orders that include increasing their capital-to-asset ratios and reducing the percentages of real estate loans in their portfolios. Basically, every dollar retained in capital is a dollar that a bank is not lending.

“They simply cannot do much lending since the focus must be on

cleaning up bad loans, not making any new ones,” Thomas said.

He added that some banks that are not under enforcement actions are being told by regulators to keep writing down the values of some loans that banks feel are fairly valued. That requires a bank to keep increasing its loan loss reserves, a step that reduces its earnings.

Amid these problems, Thomas expects that 2012 will be another year when bank failures and what he calls “shadow failures” with investment groups buying troubled banks will be a major story in Florida.

Thus, BB&T and several other large and well capitalized banks that are relative newcomers have the potential to play major roles in meeting South Florida’s growing demand for business loans and residential mortgages.

Chase, based in New York, and PNC, based in Pittsburgh, are prominent on that list. So is TD Bank, the U.S. subsidiary of Toronto Dominion Bank.

Those banks have expanded in South Florida primarily by buying banks from other states that had

2009Regulators take over Coral Gables-based BankUnited, the biggest bank based in South Florida, because of problem mortgages. An investment group buys non-problem assets, puts in new capital and keeps the BankUnited names and branches.

branch networks in Broward and other counties. Several of their acquisitions were of failed banks through the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., such as BB&T’s 2009 purchase of Alabama-based Colonial Bank.

BB&T and other newcomers “must overcome issues of ‘who are these guys?’ and ‘what do the initials stand for,?’” Thomas said.

He feels that BB&T has “built a good reputation” in its operations and added that it has been selective in buying banks.

BB&T has $168 billion in assets and is among the country’s 20 largest banks.

“We have the capital that some other banks might not have access to in the current market,” Oster said. “We can lend to large businesses and we lend to businesses of all sizes.”

Oster and other BB&T officials cannot discuss details of the

pending BankAtlantic merger because it requires approval from banking regulators.

One likelihood is that BB&T will succeed BankAtlantic with the naming rights at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise.

“We are very interested in opportunities at the BankAtlantic Center and are in discussions with people there,” Oster said.

That added brand recognition could help BB&T in the South Florida market where Oster is finding “a more aggressive competition” in business lending among large and smaller banks that do not have capital problems.

Seleski said he has been seeing more competition among banks for commercial loans.

In the residential market he is finding that “about 60 percent of the sales are still cash.”

Seleski said that in 2005 he never would have expected that

Stonegate within seven years would become the largest bank headquartered in Broward.

He and Thomas each expect more future waves of bank name changes, mixed with mergers, in South Florida.

When the economy is strong it is a ripe time for start-ups, such as Stonegate in 2005, and for banks from other states to buy profitable banks in Florida.

During downturns, there will be more opportunities for banks like BB&T and Chase to buy failed banks in deals where the FDIC takes many of the problem loans.

The sale of BankAtlantic will leave just 16 banks with headquarters in Broward. Behind Stonegate as the largest as of Sept. 30 are Community Bank of Broward, based in Weston with $476 million in assets, and Regent Bank, based in Davie, with $447 million in assets.

For the second consecutive year, the number of single-family houses in Western Broward County to resell for at least $1 million each is on the rise, with Southwest Ranches, Parkland, and Weston leading the recovery.

In the first 11 months of 2011, at least seven single-family houses have resold for at least $3 million, with one home trading for as much $4.5 million in the Sunshine Ranches subdivision in Southwest Ranches, according to an analysis based on Florida Realtors association data.

A home in Parkland’s Ranches subdivision resold for $4 million to rank as the second highest-priced transaction for a single-family house in Western Broward County in 2011.

The highest priced single-family house to resell in Weston transacted for $3.3 million in the Windmill Ranch Estate subdivision, according to the data.

Fueled by international buyers with strong foreign currencies and wealthy individuals attracted to deeply discounted South Florida luxury properties, the number of single-family house resales with a price tag of at least $1 million each in Western Broward County has increased by seven percent on a year-over-year basis

in 2011 compared to the previous year of 2010.

The number of single-family house resale transactions for at least $1 million in 2011 is up more than eight percent from 2009, according to the data.

In 2011, buyers purchased 93 single-family houses – an average of 7.8 per month - in Broward County west of Interstate 95 between January and Dec. 5,

according to the data. In the two previous years, buyers

purchased 87 single-family houses – an average of 7.3 per month - in 2010 and 86 properties – an average of 7.2 per month - in 2009.

The increasing number of resales comes as the median transaction price has dropped to $1.30 million in 2011 from nearly $1.33 million in 2010.

Despite the increased velocity of luxury house resales, Western Broward County is challenged with excess inventory of million dollar homes on the market.

As of Dec. 5, 2011, more than 235 single-family houses in Western Broward County were available for resale with an asking price of at least $1 million. The median asking price for the available inventory totaled $1.45 million, according to the data.

At the 2011 sales pace, Western Broward County has more than 30 months of single-family housing stock priced at $1 million or more.

Prices for high-end housing product are likely to remain weak in Western Broward County until the available resale inventory shrinks, industry watchers said.

As the luxury product experiences a steady increase in resales, the market for lower priced single-family houses in Western Broward County is active.

Overall, buyers purchased nearly 9,850 single-family houses in Western Broward County in the first 11 months of 2011. Compare this to previous years when buyers purchased nearly 9,525 houses in 2010 and 9,660 houses in 2009.

At the peak of the market in 2006, buyers purchased less than 8,600 single-family houses in Western Broward County.

The strong sales pace for single-family houses in Western Broward County is a reflection of weak pricing.

The median resale price for a

single-family house transaction in Western Broward County was $185,000 in the first 11 months of 2011. Compare this to previous years when the median price for a single-family house was $200,000 in 2010 and $207,000 in 2009.

At the peak of the market in 2006, the median resales price for a house in Western Broward County was $369,000, according to the report.

It is unclear when resale prices could reverse course in Western Broward County.

At the current 2011 resales pace of nearly 900 single-family house transactions per month, Western Broward County has less than two quarters of available inventory.

As of Dec. 5, 2011, less than 4,350 single-family houses were available for resale in Western Broward County, according to the report.

An additional 2,700 single-family houses in Western Broward County are under contract and waiting to transact.

Going forward, financing will be a key element to a recovery in the single-family house market in Western Broward County, industry watchers said.

Despite an increased willingness by lenders to consider financing houses in Western Broward County, many buyers have experienced various difficulties in obtaining mortgages, including appraisals that are reportedly coming in at values below contract prices, industry watchers said.

“I prefer the Apple iPhone because there are almost 250,000 apps in the iTunes store,” says Mark Segal, a sales representative from Coral Springs. “Last I checked Android hasonly 70,000 or so.”

But for others the sheer amount of apps can be overwhelming.

“It can be like an addiction,” says Roberta Edwards of Fort Lauderdale.“Aside from the cost, I find that I only use a few apps so I can still get by with my old Blackberry. My basic needs are email and a calendar, navigation and Google. I laugh at my friends who load their phones up with these apps. How much do we really need or use? It gets too complicated. I’m all aboutkeeping it simple.”

Paul Lorenzi and his wife/partner Hope dream of someday hitting it big by developing a popular app. The couple, who are spending the winter in Parkland, are big critics of the Android Market, because over half the apps in that store are free.

“Here we are trying to revive our economy and Google which rules the world is offering all of these free apps,” says Paul. “That makes it hard for innovators to make it. In the iPhone App Store, only a very small percentage of apps are free.”

“I want to serve both platforms,” adds Hope. “You cannot ignore the Android, they have such a large shareof the market.”

Most of the readers who responded to our queries gave the iPhone high marks for media, music, photos and movies. The iPhone also scores high for travel and kids’ stuff.

“My kids love my iPhone for the games,” says Constance Hendersonof Estero. “My husband calls it an expensive pacifier.”

Android is popular for socialnetworking and dining out.

As for the Blackberry, it appearsthe original monster of the category has lost some of its luster, if not theloyalty of some users.

“I’m loyal,” writes Sami Glazer of Coral Springs. “It’s been tough to be loyal and my friends flaunt their Droids and Apple’s all the time, but the Blackberry has been a loyal friendfor years and I’m rooting for them to get back on track.”

New Year, New You!Don’t you love this time of year, you make all your New

Year’s resolutions and goals and really feel like you will meet them. I’m here to give you a little push start to turn those goals into reality. The holidays have come and gone, and most Americans have gained some extra pounds within the last few months. Follow these steps to stay on track this year and make 2012 the year you improve your health with exercise and a healthy diet.

Know what you want, know your goal. Write it down, be clear and precise. You also must know why you want to achieve your goal. You have to know where you are going in order to get there, so to speak. Once you do this, make a plan and stick to it.

When most people decide to improve their health and lose weight they think they need to spend five days a week in the

gym, so they put it off and make the excuse that they don’t have the time. As a fitness trainer and expert, I tell my clients to start out doing three days a week for 30-60 minutes. This is not a lot of time, this is for your health, and you can make this happen. Before you know it, you will want more and it will turn into more but begin slowly; slow and steady keeps the weight off for good.

If you don’t like going to the gym then do something fun that interests you. There are many classes and sports leagues out there, just make sure you get some exercise

in. I tell many couples to take a long walk or a jog every evening together. Doing this can improve your health and your relationship, costs no money, and requires no equipment. Make it a ritual. I swear to you, adopt exercise into your 2012 lifestyle and you will see a dramatic change in the way you feel; exercise gives you energy.

Now, I understand life gets hectic. Sometimes work hours go into overtime and business trips happen. If you are really pressed for time

then buy a jump rope. You can find a jump rope for under $10 and they are travel friendly. Take ten extra minutes in the morning to jump rope. Ten minutes of jumping rope can burn up to 120 calories; this will also raise your heart rate and get your body warm, which in turn will burn more calories throughout your day. Ten minutes in the morning…everybody has ten minutes.

Exercise is only half the battle in improving your health in 2012. Your diet plays an equal and vital role. I ask the clients I train to keep a food journal so we know when and what they are eating. This is a huge factor in weight loss and gain. You will be surprised to find that if you adapt a few simple rules to your food consumption it is easier to shed those pounds.

Eat something within 60 minutes of rising. The old saying breakfast is the most important part of your day is true. You need to eat within 60 minutes of rising to jump start your metabolism. This is so important! Please, I beg you to eat when you wake up...did I mention eat a healthy breakfast. I rotate between 3 healthy breakfasts, they are:

Low fat Greek yogurt, blueberries, almonds (protein, antioxidants, good fat)Oatmeal, blueberries, low fat milk (whole grains/fiber, antioxidants, good fat)One egg fried with olive oil, 1 piece of whole wheat bread, 2 slices of avocado (protein, whole grains/fiber, good fat)If you are pressed for time, at the bare minimum grab a

piece of fruit. Remember to eat something for breakfast and make it healthy. I can’t stress to you the importance of eating breakfast enough.

Eat five small meals a day. I know everyone has heard this over and over, but it’s essential for living a healthy lifestyle, losing weight and keeping it off. Eating five small meals a day keeps your metabolism up, because you are eating so frequently, you never feel hungry. You should never eat so much in a sitting that you feel stuffed, EVER! This stretches out your stomach and increases your appetite. Also, if you know you are going to be out a long while carry

healthy foods with you. I recommend pre-packaged servings of a healthy nut like almonds. If you buy pre-packaged then you will stay in portion control. Nuts are a great source of good fat your body needs, you just have to be careful you don’t over consume, which is why pre-packaged portions are fabulous.

Have healthy meals readily available in your refrigerator. At the beginning of every week I bake 4 large chicken breasts and 4 99% lean turkey burgers. I stick this lean, healthy, protein in the fridge so I know all I have to do is warm it up and it’s ready for me to nosh on. Choose lean cuts of protein like chicken breast, salmon, or turkey over fatty meats.

Incorporate colorful fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. A good rule of thumb is to look down at your plate, if you don’t see bright colors, add it. Greens like spinach and kale are wonderful for you. Red and green bell peppers are healthy and add a little spice. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, all of these wonderful berries are full of antioxidants. Whatever you choose, make sure it comes from the earth and is colorful.

I wish you good health in 2012. Start off the year right by exercising a minimum 3 times a week for 30-60 minutes. Always eat breakfast, choose lean protein, and add color to your meals. Five small meals a day will keep your metabolism up. Here’s to the New Year and the new you!

Moonlit kayak rides among the mangroves and canals is just one option at this oasis just minutes from downtown Hollywood’s urban charms.

There are a number of ways to see the mangroves, wildlife and marine life that inhabit the Nature Center.

Kayaks are a popular way to see the canals and explore pockets of the park. A guided boat tour is also available. If you’re more comfortable on foot, there are two boardwalks that cross the mangrove. For spectacular views

of the park and the city’s skyline climb the 68 foot observation tower.

Park Rangers often joke that European visitors know more about the park and the local ecosystem than locals. That sounds like a challenge so put an afternoon at Anne Kolb on your “to-do” list this year.

INSIDER TIPS AND TRIVIA:The nature center was named

after Anne Kolb, a former Broward County Commissioner who was the first woman elected to the Broward Commission in 1974. Make sure to visit the Exhibition Hall which features a 3,500 gallon saltwater aquarium.

If you enjoy different types of sports, you’ll want to visit Central Broward Regional Park.

This 110-acre multi-purpose facility is famous for being the only

U.S. Cricket field certified by the International Cricket Council. The stadium has 5,000 seats and can accommodate up to 15,000 fans. If that sounds large, it is because cricket is extremely popular in parts of the world including the West Indies, where many Broward residents trace their roots.

Visitors can enjoy watching this exciting sport but also partake in other more conventional activities including basketball and a water playground (open March through October). The park also includes two lighted netball courts. Netball is derived from an early version of basketball and is popular in Commonwealth nations.

INSIDER TIPS AND TRIVIA:Pennsylvania-born, New York-

based artist Alice Aycock was commissioned in 2004 to design a water feature at the U.S. 441/State Road 7 entrance to the park. The project, “Whirls and Swirls and a Vortex on Water”, was completed in summer 2008 through the Broward County Public Art and Design program. The metal, steel, concrete, and acrylic sculpture hovers slightly above water in an elliptical-shaped pool. Massive metal ribbons spiral around an acrylic sphere that has an internal sculptural element, alongside a metal vortex that delves beneath the

This 53-acre park is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail and is considered among the most historic of Broward’s parks and natural areas.

Prehistoric materials excavated there provide evidence of habitation by subsistence cultures dating from approximately 500 B.C.E. through roughly A.D. 1000 to 1200. Archaeologists have also confirmed that, centuries later, the site was the camp of the Miccosukee leader Chitto Tustenuggee.

Also known as the Snake Warrior, Chitto Tustenuggee was designated by chief Sam Jones/Abiaka as his successor during the era of the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), when U.S. government troops clashed with the various groups of Native Americans collectively known as Seminoles.

The park features an abundance of native vegetation and wildlife and is considered one of the best bird watching places you can find.

INSIDER’S TIPS AND TRIVIA:Historians have identified the

site as one of the earliest Seminole settlements in the eastern Everglades and speculate that it had been occupied for more than a dozen years before its Indian inhabitants were attacked and fled in 1841.

7 TENNECO TOWERSFor the diving enthusiast consider visiting Tenneco Towers, the largest artificial reef in

southeast Florida. Tenneco Towers was created in 1985 when Tenneco Oil sank its production platforms. It is located off the coast of Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Queen Angels and Spanish Hogfish rule here. The smallest platform rests at 97 feet and rises to 65 feet underwater. The deepest platforms lie at 190 feet below the surface and rise to 80 feet.

INSIDER’S TIPS AND TRIVIA:Three of the platforms are within

recreational diving limits. When Hurricane Andrew stuck in August, 1992, it caused the two deep towers to list at close to a 45-degree angle. Visit a local dive shop and arrange an excursion.

anniversary of the opening of the Coral Springs Museum of Art.

This jewel of a museum prides itself on quality and diversity. Over the years, the Coral Springs Museum of Art has hosted everything from blockbuster exhibits by well-known artists such as Clyde Butcher and Dale Chilhuly to exhibits by talented local artists. Overall, more than 500,000 arts lovers have visited this 13,500 square foot museum and have seen the work of over 200 artists plus another 7,800 artists whose work has been displayed in the museum’s lobby.

Don’t miss the current Toulouse Lautrec and his 19th Century mentors exhibit running through Feb. 11.

Museum Hours are: Monday-Saturday: 10am- 5pm September through May, Thursday: 10am-8pm. The museum is closed Sunday.

“I WAS ALWAYS SKINNY BUT… now I don’t even recognize myself.” Jennifer pulled out some old college pictures from her purse. “See! This is what I used to look like!”

I nodded empathetically,realizing that Jennifer couldn’t believe what happened to her body, and she worried that no oneelse would believe it either.

“I was varsity at Radcliffe. I still play six days a week.”

Jennifer continued, “Anyhow, you wouldn’t know it from looking at me. Ever since I had Davideleven years ago, I’ve been gainingalmost ten pounds every year.”

“Hmmm, your symptoms sound a lot like POSTPARTUM HASHIMOTO’S THYROIDITIS,where something related to pregnancy causes women to needmore thyroid hormones than they can make on their own[1]”.

“They actually tested me for that. My doctors always told me my tests were normal.”

The latest diet craze, the ‘HCGDiet’, is nothing new; it was debunked back in the 1970’s as afraudulent scheme by doctors toexploit their patients for financialgain [7]. Just last October, theTexas Attorney General forcedhCG clinics in that state to stopdefrauding patients with their unethical marketing tactics [8].”

“Well, I’ve finally decided to make my health a priority. Ichecked you out on www.vitals.com,

so I know you are board-certified and legit. So what are you going to do for me?”

“I scheduled 80-minutes with you today, so I have plenty of time to do a complete history and physical exam. There are some tests I would like done to pin down exactly what is going on with your metabolism. Untreated thyroid disorders can lead to pre-diabetes, and that can also lead to weight gain[9].”

Jennifer did test positive for hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, as well as a low metabolic rate measured by indirect calorimetry[10]. HOLISTIC ADVICEPELVIC ORGANPROLAPSE REPAIRS:PPCONSIDERING THE OPTIONSPELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE (POP) IS A COMMON CONDITION AFFECTING MANY ADULT WOMEN TODAY.

The exact prevalence of pelvicorgan prolapse is difficult to determine. However, the lifetime risk of requiring at least 1 operation to correct incontinence or prolapse is estimated at approximately 11%. About 200,000 inpatient procedures are performed annually in the United States.

In Pelvic organ prolapse, the vagina and the organs surrounding and supporting it descend fromtheir normal position. When the descent involves the bladder it is termed cystocele. Likewise, when the descent involves the rectum and the intestines it is termed rectocele and enterocele respectively. The descent of theuterus (uterine prolapse) throughthe vagina is not uncommon. The severity of the condition is based on the degree of the descent. Patients can present withisolated or a combination of theaforementioned conditions.

An intense network of muscles,ligaments and connective tissuecollectively support and hold the pelvic organs in their normalposition. Weakening or collapse the support leads to prolapseof the pelvic organs namely: vagina, bladder, rectum and the uterus. Childbirth may lead to weakening of the pelvic support.Pregnancy itself, without vaginal birth has also been cited for weakening the support structures. Menopause and lack of estrogen are predisposing factors for POP.

The common symptoms relating to POP are pressure in the vagina, lump or bulge at the vaginal opening, urinary andbowel incontinence and sexualdysfunction. Urinary retention or hydronephrosis (kidney dilation) can also be noted in severe cases. Diagnostic evaluation can include physical and pelvic examination, ultrasonogram, video-urodynamics, MRI and/or cytoscopy. Surgery is oftenessential to treat symptomatic POP. Prolapse surgery may be performed with or without synthetic mesh implant.

For many years Dr. Gousse hasopted to repair prolapses without synthetic mesh. He prefers to useporcine or cadaveric tissue to repair the weakness of the pelvic floor.There have been some reports of synthetic mesh extrusion in the vaginal canal or erosion into theurinary tract. Therefore, patients must be very caselected prior tousing syntheticmeshes.In some cases, pelvic floor s t r e n g t h e n i n g exercises andvaginal pessariesare good alternativeoptions.

Pelvic muscexercises can impropelvic floor mustone and urinincontinence. Pessare manufactured medical-grade silicone and are safe, cost-effective, and minimally invasiveoptions for treating patients with pelvic organ prolapse. The

pessaries can be inserted in thevagina to reduce the prolapse andchanged once a month to every 3 months. Surgery may not beindicated for women with minimalor no symptoms or who are unable to undergo surgery because of medical reasons.

CLOSING TIMEAND another thing...

Do you know how to read musical notation? If you do, you know that when you’re reading music you’re actually reading at least two things simultaneously. Because written music tells you what note to play and exactly when to play it.

Written language, on the other hand, only tells you one thing — what letter to pronounce. Of course, punctuation helps indicate pacing — pause at a comma, stop at a period, I’m not really sure what to do at a semicolon — but it’s still up to you to interpret how the author wanted the piece paced and emphasized.

For example, read the following sentences aloud and place your emphasis on the boldfaced capitalized words. You’ll see how the pacing — and the meaning — can change based on where you choose to place the emphasis.

I didn’t say you should leave now.I DIDN’T say you should leave now.I didn’t SAY you should leave now.I didn’t say YOU should leave now.I didn’t say you SHOULD leave now.I didn’t say you should LEAVE now.I didn’t say you should leave NOW.As you just saw, the same sentence can be interpreted

seven different ways depending on how you pronounce the words. And the author gives you no instruction as to what the proper interpretation should actually be.

Music notation is not like that. The composer provides the musician with the note to play, the time signature to play it in, the exact moment each note should be played, the way the note should be attacked, and the volume with which the note should be played. That’s why an entire orchestra can play a piece of music simultaneously and get it mostly right on the first reading. Of course the conductor can add flavorings and nuance, as can each player, but the basic structure still provides instructions for every part of the composition.

At the same time, musical notation has a way to allow the musician to add his or her own ideas to the piece. Here the composer might suggest what the musician should play but also provides for the instrumentalists to create their own music and explore their own musical ideas by playing what they feel, and hopefully, what fits into the structure of what the rest of the ensemble is doing. Needless to say, musicians, composers, and music producers have very specific terms for this activity of making it up as you go along. In jazz music, the proper jargon is improvisation. In country music it’s called making it up as you go along.

Ironically, written language, which doesn’t put nearly the same restraints on interpretation of prose, makes no accommodation for preplanned spontaneity. Sure, a rabbi

or minister might halt their liturgical reading to allow parishioners to riff on a theme (the clergy call it private mediation) but when was the last time you were reading a novel and the author inserted a few blank pages for you to add your own thoughts? There’s just no room for readers to add their own words to a written piece.

That’s why sarcasm and irony seldom works well in print or online advertising. It’s one thing for the copywriter to add their own dramatic inflection to a headline when they present it to a client, but it’s quite another to expect a reader to add that same emphasis. Instead, the language of ads must be clear, simple, and to the point. Hopefully this will cause an emotional response without depending on a specific interpretive performance from the reader.

Politicians, too, get tripped up by using emphasis on certain words that makes sense when they’re giving a speech but lose all meaning when they’re quoted in print. And as we’ve seen lately, many politicians’ language trips them up when they lie or flip-flop, but that’s a whole other issue.

Just imagine if Gershwin had e-mailed the lyrics of his famous song to his manager:

“You like potato and I like potato,You like tomato and I like tomato,Potato, potato, tomato, tomato,Let’s call the whole thing off.”Say what? Call the whole thing

off just because we use the same words? What’s up with that? Clearly something was lost in the translation.
