Lifestyle Magazines are the premiere publications in Weston, Parkland, Coral Springs, Las Olas and Estate homes (covering West Davie, Southwest Ranches, Hawks Landing and Plantation Acres) and are often referred to as the “Ocean Drive’ or “Town and Country Magazine” for these cities. The magazines cater to the high end luxury product lines and services reaching an affluent audience and readers, who have the ability to buy most anything. The magazine’s editorial content features the “who’s who” and those people having the most impact on the community, along with covering the social scene, galas and events where many of those same people gather. The magazines are delivered by direct mail monthly to over 40,000 homes valued in the millions of dollars. They are also being distributed throughout the city at strategic locations, such as Town Centers, Country Clubs, Athletic Clubs and the Resorts & Spas, along with our advertising partners in the city.

Spitfire Chronograph. Ref. 3878: Back in the days of the dogfights, there was no technology to do the flying for you. A pilot who wanted to get the most out of his Spitfire needed to have an eye on every detail. The same goes today for an IWC Spitfire Chronograph, incidentally: the big central seconds hand together with the day and date displays and the propeller-inspired hour and minute hands are all within the pilot’s field of vision. And that could hardly be more appealing. Mechanical chronograph movement | Self-winding | 68-hour power reserve when fully wound | Date display | Stop-

“COMPASSION IS NOT A CORPORATE POLICY; IT’S A PERSONALITY TRAIT.”

As someone who has been through surgery more

your hospital should employ the kind of people for

FATHERS – FLAG DAY– FACEBOOK

This month we celebrate fathers on June 17th. So, I wish all the dads a Happy Father’s Day.

Tim Russert wrote the book, Wisdom of Our Fathers with refl ections from children and the impact their father had on their lives. I read this book as well as listen to it on long trips in the car. The messages from each individual’s perspective are both heartwarming and heart wrenching. It reminds me of the lessons of service, opportunity and perseverance my dad taught me and my hope of what I pass to my son.

Through the years, fatherhood has taken on many facets from the Greatest Generations war torn toughness to today’s kinder, gentler dad. What I learned from my dad is - you are what you do. That is, you make a life not by what you get, rather by what you give.

My dad was not able to provide much monetarily, but he did provide the example of the power of service to others. This is what creates opportunity and one’s legacy. Embracing this characteristic has been challenging and at times disadvantageous to me personally. Still, I believe, in the long run, it will produce benefi ts beyond my dreams.

I know there will be days when I stumble or when people try to knock me down, but I was taught to look up, get up and never give up!

Flag Day – When? Always June 14th! This is the day for all Americans, and those who have been given the opportunity to live here in the USA, to celebrate and show respect for our fl ag, its designers and makers as well as those men and women who protect, or paid the ultimate sacrifi ce for,

what the fl ag symbolizes. Our fl ag represents our independence and our unity as a nation - one nation, under God, indivisible. Our fl ag has a proud history and is known as an emblem of Liberty around the world.

So, no matter where you are from, I urge you to raise the American fl ag this month and every day with pride!

Speaking of raising the fl ag, Facebook will go public as one of the greatest images for what America represents – Opportunity. This is where one takes an idea to connect billions of people through digital channels and ultimately profi ts by its proliferation.

And, now you can buy popularity on the site. A Facebook spokesperson confi rmed last month the “pay to play” test going on in New Zealand. Capitalism at its best!

The service Facebook provides are numerous, from reconnecting lifelong friends to fostering business

transactions and it has even been credited for the rise of liberty in countries once dominated by dictators. Let’s hope it also serves a catalyst for positive change toward peace and global collaborations to bring opportunities for all humanity. After all, isn’t this the aspiration of all fathers for their children?

Happy Father’s Day – As Always – Enjoy the Lifestyle!

June marks the beginning of family travel season.

If you’re like us when you hit the road, you want to see something different, not just the usual tourist haunts.

Enter http://atlasobscura.com/, a website designed and curated to share the hidden sites of cities you may be visiting.

This endlessly fascinating and well curated site will enable you to dazzle your friends when you suggest some off the beaten path destinations.

Even if you “staycation,” Altas Obscura can make you seem like an expert.

The site has more than a dozen offbeat Florida locations to explore. Our favorite: “The Skunk Ape Research Headquarters” in the Everglades. Dave Shealy is the Jane Goodall of the Florida Everglades. Shealy has spent his entire life studying a smelly hominid cryptid known as the Skunk Ape, and has established the offi cial Skunk Ape Research Center.

So what is a Skunk Ape? Think of Florida’s version of Big Foot. Does it exist? That’s for you to decide, but you may want to visit Dave Shealy fi rst. He can be found in Ochopee, Florida.

Until next month.

They look like something Lady Gaga would wear, but when you think about it OneSense headphones make…well…a lot of sense.

Sometimes, you may just want to listen to your music in peace, without being interrupted by

passers-by or visually intrusive ads, technology and surrounding events. That’s when you need a pair of the OneSense concept headphones that not only cover your ears, but also your eyes. The bright red design and intimidating spikes will defi nitely make people think twice before approaching you. And that’s a good thing, after all this is about enjoying the music without any interruptions.

The OneSense headphones were created by designer Joe Doucet.

The design is getting great play on all the right tech blogs. We’re not sure where to get them yet, but where’s there’s a will there’s a way. Or simply call Lady Gaga. www.joedoucet.com

Summertime is here, which means that it’s time to decide on your beach reading list.

If you’re looking for inspiration, look no further than a sensational new book entitled “What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?”

Jonnie Penn, Dave Lingwood, Duncan Penn and Ben Nemtin – collectively known as The Buried Life have written a stunning book that is sweeping the nation. Their live appearances at schools across the country have become a YouTube sensation as people of all ages share what they would like to accomplish before leaving this Earth. Answers range from having Morgan Freeman read them a bedtime story to ending human traffi cking.

The Buried Life team wrote the book to prove that four ordinary guys can achieve their bucket lists and inspire others to live their dreams.

The Buried Life is so confi dent that you will love their book that they are willing to buy it back if you don’t like it and they’ll even throw in a t- shirt for your trouble. Now that’s confi dence.

What Do You Want To Do Before You Die? Is an illustrated collection of your wildest dreams. Two hundred of the most moving, imaginative, amusing, and thought-provoking things to do before you die are brought to life through handmade art curated by Dave, Duncan, Jonnie and Ben—the founders of The Buried Life.

These four regular guys are on a mission to complete a list of 100 things before they die, and for every item they accomplish, they help a total stranger do something on his or her own to-do list. Peppered throughout the book are lessons, secrets, and stories that come from fi ve years of asking millions worldwide: What do you want to do before you die?

Without spoiling the book, their wish list includes playing basketball with President Obama (done), throwing out the fi rst pitch at a Major League Baseball game and delivering a baby.

Available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other fi ne book dealers. www.theburiedlifebook.com

Local Surfers Create Build N’ Barrel…Money & Manpower To Improve Lives in Nicaragua “NO MAN STANDS SO TALL AS WHEN HE STOOPS TO HELP A CHILD,” ACCORDING TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

That’s the thought that came to mind in writing about St. Thomas Aquinas high school teenagers, Michael Jones and Chad Meissner, founders of Build N’ Barrel. They along with siblings Amanda Jones and Teddy Meissner have been friends since kindergarten and started surfi ng at an early age. Over the years, they have enjoyed traveling to other parts of the world to surf.

It was during one of those surfi ng excursions where they were struck by the beauty of Playa Santana, Nicaragua as well as the crushing poverty and unhealthy living conditions of the local people. Playa Santana, located on the South West coast of Nicaragua, is considered to be one of the best places to surf in Central America. A paradise for surfers!

“When we left, we knew we wanted to come back to surf and to fi nd a way to help make a difference in the

lives of the locals,” Chad said. They got in touch with Tony Longobucco, the owner of the Surf Santuary where they stayed during their trip. He suggested that if they came up with money and manpower, he would fi nd specifi c projects they could build. And thus, Build N’ Barrel was born. ‘Barrel’ is the surfi ng terminology used to describe when a wave is hollow and it is breaking! The kind members of the hotel provide food, housing and transportation to sites

and surf spots.“In our last mission, we built a

playground for the local elementary school from recyclable materials such as wood logs, old tires and rope. The trip before that, we helped refurbish the clinic and put fl ooring into a young boys house that was contracting diseases from sleeping on the dirt,” Michael explained. Fundraisers have included car washes, ‘t’ shirt sales and donations.

Every trip has grown in size, with teens from three different schools joining in during their last trip. With unbounded enthusiasm, the two founders of Build N’ Barrel plan to reach out to high schools across Florida and eventually across the U.S. It’s not all work and no play… they surf, sand board, enjoy campfi res and go deep sea fi shing.

“We welcome new volunteers with open arms,” Michael Jones said. Their next mission is from July 16th to the 24th. Contact Build ‘N Barrel www.buildnbarrel.org or email [email protected] for information.

Hundreds Join Longtime ACS Volunteer, David Singer for Jail and Bail Luncheon

Renowned Hollywood attorney David W. Singer hosted the organizational luncheon and where the committee was formed to plan this year’s annual Jail and Bail event, an occasion that has become synonymous with tremendous generosity and fun, benefi tting the American Cancer Society. The luncheon was held May 2, 2012 at the Airport Sheraton in Fort Lauderdale. Scores of professionals, local politicians, and business leaders from Broward County, North Miami-Dade and Southern Palm Beach Counties attended. The luncheon was highlighted by Honorary Chair Jason Taylor, a recently retired Miami Dolphin great. The Sponsors include Countyline Chiropractic, BrandsMart and Lipton Toyota.

Singer has chaired Jail and Bail for more than 20 years, and is responsible for raising more than $2.4 million dollars for the American Cancer Society. The event has developed its own unique mechanism for raising money, while the participants have a great time doing it. Singer picks

people to form his “parole board”. They, in turn, with some instruction, are taught how to fi nd “jail birds.” Volunteers on the “parole board” may have their worst enemy or best friend arrested and thrown in jail for this good cause. It is the “jailbirds” who make the calls from jail to get ACS pledges. If they meet their bail, they get out. Many are having such a blast, they don’t want to go! This year, Singer has targeted a goal of $200,000.

Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti and State Attorney Mike Satz have become staples of Jail and Bail, and once again will participate in the excitement involving the resources of their sizable offi ces. Lamberti, a cancer survivor, has been an important part of the event for the past fi ve years, having served as the Honorary Chair in the past. Satz, also a former Honorary Chair, has been an irreplaceable part of Jail and Bail for the past 12 years.

“We are eager to get started. There is a lot of money to raise this year,” said Singer. “It will be gratifying to

those people that sign up to help. Al Lamberti and Mike Satz are invaluable to this event, which continues to grow each year. Jason Taylor, a sports legend in South Florida, and a certain NFL Hall of Famer, will be a huge help. He is truly one of a kind, and it is great that he is lending his name to this important cause.”

Two tenth graders from Cypress Bay, Sharon Raps and Rachel Iserson are on a mission… and it’s not the popular movie… ‘Mission Impossible!’ These two dynamic girls created “Best of Friends” and have teamed with the non-profi t “Feeding South Florida” (formerly Daily Bread

Bank) in an effort to help a growing number of South Floridians who are going hungry. Feeding South Florida (FSF) coordinates the donations of food to the Soup Kitchens and Food Pantries throughout the area.

The girl’s project started when Sharon’s mom, Michele, came home from a luncheon where two women spoke about Rachel’s Table, a volunteer-based group that collects un-served and unsold prepared and perishable foods that otherwise would be wasted. “I shared the information with the girls and they wanted to do something like it here,” Michele recounted. “I was under the

impression that only nonperishable food could be donated, so Sharon and Rachel began by doing some research… the more they learned, the more excited they became… and the project was born.”

Inspired by the success of Rachel’s Table in

Massachusetts, the girls learned “that 20% of all food produced in the US goes to waste and that 49 million Americans, that’s one in six, go hungry every day.”

A trip to the FSF headquarters in Pembroke Park provided the girls with a fi rsthand look at the modern 112,000 square-foot warehouse, where FSF distributes nearly 30 million pounds of food throughout the quad-County annually. Several programs were discussed: “Kids Count Program,” “Weekend Backpack,” providing children at some elementary schools to go home on Friday with a backpack fi lled with food, and the upcoming second annual March for Hunger 5K, to name a few.

“We felt the best way for us to help was by raising money,” Rachel said. Sharon added, “every dollar collected is equivalent to 7 pounds of food with FSF’s purchasing power.”

Sharon and Rachel worked hard after school to fi nd additional participants and sponsors. Their team brought in the most funds from a private group, and the event raised a total of $58,500. Although the girls are proud of their accomplishment, this is only the beginning. They have already begun planning for next years’ 5K and are looking for individual participants, groups wanting to walk together and sponsors to join the cause. They were provided with a secure website so anyone interested can contact them at [email protected] to learn more.

University School of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has long been known as one of the fi nest private schools in South Florida, if not the nation. Founded in 1971, University School puts the “college” in college preparatory school. A private, independent, pre-K through 12th grade school located on the campus of NSU, University School is one of a few schools of its kind in the U.S. “This puts University School in a class all its own, with its students – diverse, determined and fully engaged in their education – uniquely poised to excel,” headmaster, Dr. Jerome Chermak explained.

One of the most unique facets of a University School experience is their school’s relationship with Nova Southeastern University. Students have access to the NSU library, the

largest in the state of Florida, to do research and study. They also have the opportunity to hear NSU

professors speak on a variety of topics; conduct individual research projects with NSU faculty mentors; engage in

mock trials with law school students and professors; and much more

“University School’s unique relationship with NSU fl ows both ways,” headmaster Chermak said. “NSU undergraduate and graduate students intern at the school, while many University School teachers – 75 percent of whom have advanced degrees – concurrently teach at the graduate level at NSU.”

Preparing students for the 21st century is a core component for both teachers and students. Students are motivated to excel and teachers in Pre-K through 12th grade “… prepare students to lead in the 21st century.”

Three University School seniors dish and tell and demonstrate their ability to lead by example, empower their peers, and fi nd the best in themselves by pursuing every available opportunity.

JESSICA MOORE Jessica Moore has been at University

School for 12 years and was accepted to Emory University. With inspiration and encouragement from her Aunt Talia, Jessica has decided to pursue a major in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology.

“My parents taught me from an early age that a good education is a person's most valuable attribute,” she said… which might explain why she is a Riley Science Award Recipient and an AP Scholar with Honor.

Her parents are professional musicians and instilled a love of music. As a member of the Florida Youth Orchestra, Jessica has achieved Superior Ratings at Piano and Violin Soloist Competitions at District and State Levels for the past fi ve years.

MATTHEW LINN Matthew Linn was recently accepted to Brown University. He’s the captain of his school’s Speech and Debate team, which has been his main focus in high school, and a member of the National, Math, Spanish, Science and English Honor Societies. In addition, he was named a National Merit Finalist, National Forensics League All-American, and an AP Scholar with Distinction.

“I have an amazing, loving family. My parents are always helping me become the best person that I can be,” Matthew said.

Matthew has been playing piano for the past decade, and when time permits, he loves kayaking. With an interest in travel and eventually living abroad, he’s becoming fl uent in Spanish and is studying Chinese.

MOLLY MOREAU Molly Moreau, an AP Scholar and

Broward County Science Fair winner, was accepted to Vanderbilt University. She plans to study Communications/Public Relations, and wants to be involved with the music industry.

“My parents have always felt that education is the best gift a parent can give a child.” Her close knit family are avid readers. “So much can be learned through books,” she added.

Molly is passionate about her volunteer work with A.H.L.E. orphanage in Honduras and has made seven trips there. Sixty-fi ve abandoned and abused boys live there. “They have taught me so much about myself… they are an inspiration,” Molly said.

Molly has taken dance lessons since she was two and is the President of Innovations Dance Company and Dance Honor Society.

DID YOUKNOW?

While historically University School has been a vibrant hub of academic and artistic talent, its recent addition of several sports programs – and their team successes thus far – rounds out this one-of-a-kind learning environment. A case in point is the Soccer team, boasting a 2011 state championship.

Additionally, their Speech and Debate team ranks among the top one percent nationwide, multiple students were

honored with Emmy Awards for their world-class video productions, Middle and Upper School students won more than 60 Scholastic Art Awards and University School students won Best Build Design at last year’s VEX Robotics Competition.

For more information about University School, call (954) 262-4506 or visit uschool.nova.edu. The school is at 3375 S.W. 75th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

Martina FouquetPine Crest Schoolwww.Pinecrest.edu

Known for turning common academic topics “inside out” during classroom

discussion, Martina is a top-tier math student with a penchant for singing Broadway. Or is she a promising actress and ballerina on the pre-med track? Indeed, Martina is all of these things. She thanks Pine Crest School for allowing her to be herself, and excel outside the box.

“Pine Crest is a school of intellectual thinking. There are no limits,” said Martina. “You walk around on campus and students aren’t talking about something on TV last night. You will hear conversations like, ‘Did you hear about the presidential campaign or some new scientifi c research?’ There is a mutual respect for one another.”

Martina balances a course load heavy with AP classes, sings in the chorus, and performs in principal roles in most of Pine Crest’s plays and musicals. She is in constant motion and she manages to earn top marks in all of her classes. She traveled with her classmates to the American High School Theater Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2009, and has since performed in the fall production of “Twelve Angry Jurors,” the ballet “Coppelia,” and this November’s ballet production of “A Christmas Carol.”

Martina also is very involved in working with Pine Crest’s sister school Three Little Flowers, in Petit-Goave, Haiti. She is a member of Pine Crest’s Black Students’ Association, and she is an active member of the anti-bullying team “Words That Hurt,” a school-wide program coordinated by Pine Crest’s Diversity offi ce. Martina will study humanities and pre-med at Princeton University. To learn more about Pine Crest’s Upper School, go to: http://vimeo.com/channels/248920.

Sam NemiroffPine Crest Schoolwww.Pinecrest.edu

Something about the French horn “speaks” to senior Sam Nemiroff, who has

played the complex and often misunderstood instrument for almost nine years. Sam, who also plays trumpet, said he is much more comfortable with the French horn because the instrument demands a certain depth of musicality that is not always appreciated by the masses.

“It kind of defi nes what kind of musician I am and it is different from other brass instruments because there are nuances that make it so much more complex,” said Sam, a science scholar, musician, and classical music composer.

The “mellow” brass instrument suits Sam well, as he is placed among a select few in the country who have received the Young Fine Arts Merit Award, which measures mastery of musicianship at the Upper School level. Sam’s love for the musical arts is only one aspect of his focused School career. He also is a member of Pine Crest School’s award-winning Upper School Science Research Team. Sam recently was named a 2012 Intel Semi-fi nalist for his research entitled, “The Risk of Microbial Keratitis from Contaminated Eyewash Stations,” which was conducted at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute under the direction of Dr. Darlene Miller.

Sam’s research confi rmed the presence of the pathogens in two-thirds of the water he collected from laboratories along the East coast. He said he is very honored by the recognition he has received at Pine Crest School. Sam will major in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology (MCDB) at Yale University this fall. Paul, along with “Young” Ron Brewer, has been on the air for more than twenty two-years in South Florida; the region’s longest-running radio show entertains and remains relevant to a generation of South Floridians and their children.

Back to authentic. We have all met and engaged with celebrities at one time or another. The experience can leave you feeling at a loss sometimes for your perception and the reality may not align. Paul is the bona fi de, genuine real deal. Interrupted throughout lunch by eager fans, phone calls and my prodding questions, he remained open, forthright and charming. So much of his life is and has been public on the air that you’d think at some point, he would just say enough! But, more pictures and invitations from fans and charities continue to fi ll his schedule and give him great joy.

Castronovo works constantly to maintain his edge and stay relevant. He shares his commitment to working harder has to be part of the reason all of the other shows that began at the time he started on terrestrial radio, are gone. Maintaining an edge on radio isn’t easy these days with satellite and Internet radio reaching listeners. But he shares “at the end of the day, with all the buttons in your car on the dashboard, people will still hit the local radio when they want to know what’s going on in the local market.”

Paul’s love of South Florida began at age eleven when he moved here from Long Island, NY. Now fi fty-two, he still loves the outdoors and all the area offers. When he’s not working, he’s fi shing, boating, cycling or just enjoying time with his family. He grew up surfi ng and enjoys watching his son surf the waters just as he did. He talks about one of his favorite athletes, Laird Hamilton, an American big-wave surfer, co-inventor of tow-in surfi ng, and shares that Hamilton is a “specimen” because he can run the beach carrying Palm trees in his hands. Paul’s excitement is contagious.

The Castronovo’s love to entertain. Great wine and food are always a big part of the experience. In fact, that's how his journey to vineyard owner began. He and Gina (his wife) were in Italy on vacation and met Eros Spinozzi, an Italian wine exporter while dining one evening. He then introduced

Castronovo to the Galasso family of the San Lorenzo winery. In what can only be explained as fate; when Paul was on his fl ight back to the US, he sat next to Bruce Hunter (President of Shaw-Ross wines) and they brokered a deal right then

and there. That was the beginning of the Castronovo Vineyards.

Paul mentioned “In Italy, there’s no rushing. You eat, drink and however long it takes, it takes. They will keep the restaurant open until you are through.” He loved the experience. And when he traveled to the San Lorenzo winery, the Galasso family had prepared platters of meats and treated Paul and Gina like royalty! At the end of their visit, the grandmother was clear when she spoke to him, “You bring our wine back to

America.” Thoughts of beginning Castronovo Vineyards entered Paul’s mind. And as fate would have it, in 2010, Montepulciano D'Abruzzo was introduced here in the United States. It’s the kind of wine that can be served with pasta, steak, pizza or even a spicy seafood dish. The second offering, the Castronovo Pecorino arriving on US soil now is the perfect wine for outdoor Florida summer cooking. You can serve it while on the boat (it won’t stain like red) and it goes well with Lobster on the grill, conch or Ceviche if you are entertaining by the pool.

A few things you may not know about our own hometown Castronovo. He’s a wonderful blues singer. He can do a fantastic ZZ Top Billy Gibbons and also Lynyrd Skynyrd vocals. He loves the more obscure tunes such as Gimme Back My Bullets. He watches Modern Family, Richard Lewis and Dom Irrera “destroy him by making him laugh” and is a big fan of the Sleep Number Bed. His biggest career moves were suggested by his wife and he’s lost eighty-nine pounds in eighteen months!

PLANNING ON HITTING THE COURT MORE OFTEN THIS SEASON? CHECK OUT OUR TOP 10 TENNIS TIPS FOR INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED PLAYERS FROM WESTON TENNIS CENTER DIRECTOR ROBERT “REZA” TOMPSETT.

If you’ve been hitting the tennis court lately but just can’t seem to get past the same errors you’ve been making against your opponents or are looking to improve your game, we’ve got good news for you: Weston Tennis Center director Robert “Reza” Tompsett has the top 10 tips to help you improve your game and hopefully make your time on the court as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. Whether you are an intermediate player looking for new ways to advance or consider yourself a more experienced tennis pro, these tips can help you build more player confi dence and effectiveness on the court.

1 Carefully warm up before playing using a mix of stretching exercises and jogging.

2 Keep your game simple and try to improve on different areas each time you play.

3 Be calm; a bad case of nerves can ruin your game. Just focus on your opponent and

your game.

4 Keep the ball in play; don’t get careless. You have a better chance to win if you

maintain patience and hit clean, fundamentally sound strokes.

5 Don’t always try to hit winners. That will cause you to make unforced errors.

6 Concentrate on getting your fi rst serve in play. Don’t worry about the speed of the

serve. First serves are extremely important and help you control the game.

7 If possible, keep your opponent guessing. Don’t allow them to get into a rhythm.

8 Find a rhythm of your own and stay relaxed while the game progresses.

9 Mix in a few shots that you have learned in the past such as lobs, angles and drop

shots, but don’t hit shots you’re not familiar with, that’s for practice.

10 Keep a positive attitude; don’t get down on yourself, persevere; the game has a lot

of ups and downs.

Finally, a program that works. What’s the BB3 Secret? It’s not rocket science. Look around. Do you see anyone who is exactly like you? Unlikely…that’s because every BODY is different. Yet most programs fail because they are not designed specifically for your lifestyle and your body type. Of course, there are some principles that are universal but there is no one diet or exercise program that works for every-one. That is why we personalize our approach with the right combination of effective nutrition, physical training and one-on-one coaching. I will admit it may not be the best business plan but it is without a doubt the most effective solution to transform your body. – Billy Beck III, Fearless Leader

6 BENJAMIN FRANKLINWho is the author of the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin? Well, Benjamin Franklin, of

course… What better to appreciate the excitement and challenges of our country’s formative years than to read the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin! Although Franklin was born a little over 300 years ago, his life continues to be an inspiration and his advice is timeless. Wikipedia wrote that “…this work has become one of the most famous and infl uential examples of an autobiography ever written. Used paperback on Amazon start at a penny (a penny saved is a penny earned, mind you…) and via Kindle it’s free.

7 CITY OF PLANTATIONA really popular tradition is the Rick Case Automotive Group and the City of Plantation’s Independence

Day Celebration. It begins with the popular parade starting at 9:00 a.m. at the intersection of West Broward Boulevard and N.W. 46th Avenue. It heads west to N.W. 69th Avenue, turns left on N.W. 4th Street and ends at City Hall about 11:00 a.m. with awards. Wait… wait… there’s more… The Annual Concert & Fireworks takes place at the Plantation Central Park Ball Fields. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and features Viva Classic Rock & Roll, a South Florida top 40’s & Variety Show band. The Fireworks follow at 9:00 p.m. featuring Zambelli Internationale. Hot Dogs, burgers, soda, water and more will be available for purchase during the evening program. All proceeds will benefi t Plantation Athletic League. Call (954) 452-2506.

8CITY OF WESTONThe theme of Weston’s 4th of July Parade is “Celebrating We The People,” which begins at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Town Center Blvd. and Three Village Road. It continues east to Bonaventure Blvd., heading south briefl y to Bell Tower Lane and winding

through Town Center to the heart of Main Street. If you love a parade, then this one is for you! Participants include local businesses, civic groups, schools, bands, organization and residents. If you feel really energetic, there is a 5K run/walk starting at 7:00 .m. at Weston Town Center. Visit www.splitsecondtiming.com or call (954) 389-4321.

9 A CAPITAL FOURTHA Capital Fourth… is another great tradition, particularly for those who enjoy just staying home in the evening… You can tune into PBS Channel 2 to enjoy the fabulous and very patriotic concert and watching the “… best fi reworks of any celebration.” Touted as

“America’s Premier Birthday Party,” an audience favorite and a highlight of the evening is the rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with live cannon fi re provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery. The show, which starts at 8:00 p.m. will feature stunning visuals of the National Mall and the memorials and monuments representing the ideals underpinning our democracy. Some Fireworks Trivia… Did you know the fi reworks have names?? Here’s a few… Peony - the most common type of fi rework, the peony shell type is a spherical break of colored stars that burn without a tail effect; Chrysanthemum - a spherical break of colored stars, similar to a peony, but with stars that leave a visible trail of sparks; and Crossette a shell containing several large stars that travel a short distance before breaking apart into smaller stars, leaving a crisscross effect.

10 BARBECUE This doesn’t take a rocket scientist to fi gure out… We’re not sure if the family and friends Bar-B-Q is a tradition started by our Founding Fathers, but it sure is a great way to celebrate… and don’t forget the birthday cake for dessert!

IDENTITY THIEVES ARE OUT TO

STEAL YOUR LIFESTYLE THIS SUMMER

Identity thieves don’t take vacations; they wait for you to plan a trip and then act. It’s devious and unfortunately a proven winner. Why? Because it’s human nature

to relax while on vacation and forget about “reality.” Thieves know it and they thrive on it. So the question is how can you protect yourself while simultaneously enjoying your summer retreat?

START PREPARATIONS BEFORE

YOU SET OUT ON YOUR ADVENTURE.

Contact your bank and credit card companies and inform them of your trip. Give them your destination and the length of your stay. paid the price. “To be honest, I wasn’t thinking about identity theft; I was thinking about getting away from the stress of work,” said John. “But when I got back from my vacation and received my credit card bill, I noticed an

additional $1,000 charged on my account. It happened so fast.”

Next, think about your home. All of your fi les and personal i n f o r m a t i o n should be concealed in a safe place. Ask your neighbors to pick up your mail or call the post offi ce and ask them to hold the mail while

you are away. If thieves are casing a neighborhood and see an overstuffed mailbox, you automatically become a target.

After that clean out your wallet or purse and bring only the essentials. Leave items such as your social security card and check book at home in a secure place. Bring two credit cards in case one gets lost or becomes inactivated.

If you have to bring an ATM card with

you, bring a pin-based card. If you don’t have one

then simply ask your bank for one.

Also, be very careful when choosing a location

to withdraw money out of a machine. Make certain it’s safe and the machine has not been tampered with in any manner. There are mechanisms such as skimming devices that thieves attach to ATM machines. These devices capture your personal information once you swipe your card. Check the machine carefully or ask a manager at the place you are staying for a trusted spot to withdraw money.

If you plan on taking your laptop don’t access personal accounts at the local coffee shop with internet capability. Most Wi-Fi hot spots don’t have security. The same goes for hotel computers or computers at internet cafés. Identity thieves use software such as keyloggers, which track your keystrokes and steal your personal information. Jan Archers can attest to it. “I was relaxing and checking my bank account at the local coffee shop,” said Jan. “I never thought someone could steal my account number so easily and drain my account. I was in shock.”

If you are staying in a hotel don’t leave any personal information out in the open. Lock it up in the safe. Also, make photocopies of all your key documents, such as your passport, plane tickets, hotel reservations and even your driver’s license and place them in the safe,

too. If your wallet or purse is stolen these photocopies

will provide the authorities with valuable information.

One other note of caution to the many social media users out there, don’t publicize your travel plans to all your friends and relatives on Facebook or Twitter. It’s careless. Even with all the online security settings and other safeguards in place. You’re just inviting trouble because you don’t really know who’s looking at your posts, especially with all the trolls snooping around; it’s an open invitation to rob your house.

Identity thieves quickly adapt and reinvent new ways to steal your personal information, your money and your lifestyle. They are diligent but these simple tips should make them look elsewhere for another victim. Just remember, be prepared, be careful and stay alert – then have fun.

FATHERHOOD

Page 58: Weston June 2012

How many children so you have? I have two boys and a girl.

Matthew is 23 years old, Ashlee is 21 years old and Brandon is

15 years old. Matthew played college basketball at Northwood

University and Johnson & Wales and I am very proud of the fact

that he dedicated himself to being a student athlete throughout

his school years. I coached him from the time he fi rst picked up

a basketball at 5 years old at the YMCA until 10 years later in

travel AAU games across the country. I am proud of the fact that

my daughter Ashlee is such a well-rounded individual. She also

played basketball, was a cheerleader and always enjoys helping

people. She is a junior at UCF studying Psychology and has

received an internship this summer with the Florida Panthers.

My youngest son Brandon is a sophomore at Cypress Bay and

has been given a gift with his knowledge of math as he ranks

in the top 95% in his class and also plays basketball for his

high school team. I am so proud to be the father of these three

outstanding kids.

Where do you work? I am the Director of Sales for American

Recruiting and Consulting Group, an executive recruiting fi rm in

Weston.

What are your favorite hobbies? I enjoy playing basketball,

tennis, biking, snorkeling, lifting weights, kayaking, reading and

volunteering.

What would the perfect day spent with your children include? Playing “HORSE” or “Around the World” basketball

games in the gym then riding bikes to Markham Park to watch

the radio controlled planes then ending the day playing games at

Dave and Busters.

What is your favorite date night spot? That would be the

Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood or Casablanca Restaurant in

Ft. Lauderdale.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Giving

How do you stay involved with your community? I was a member of the Board of Directors for the

Sheinberg Family YMCA for seven years and was part

of the dream to build the “Y” in Weston. I was the

Broward YMCA “Volunteer of the Year” in 2000

and have also been an AYSO Soccer coach for

four years, YMCA basketball coach for twelve

years and Weston Wizards AAU, YBOA and

USSSA travel basketball coach for nine years.

All told I have coached over 500 games and

over 300 boys and girls in our community

and strive to make a positive impact in their

lives. I am also the founder of CMD Sports,

a non-profi t organization, and created the

“Two Man All Ball” Tournament which

raised over $100,000 for various South

Florida Children’s charities including Joe

DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Family

Network on Disabilities and the Lowe’s

Syndrome Foundation.

Where can you be found on your day/night off when you’re not with your

children? Sheinberg Family YMCA, Weston Town

Center, Posnack JCC, biking on the roads of Weston or at the

beach.

What does being a father mean to you on father’s day? It

means making a choice to be a part of my children’s lives and

not missing anything that is important to them and being there

for them as a parent, cheerleader, mentor, teacher and friend.

How many children do you have? I have

a daughter and a son. Joey Danielle, 6

years old, my little girl gets “it”. She has a

wonderful sense of humor and is a natural

nurturer. My favorite quality about her is

her ability to point out the obvious (or not

so obvious). Whether its a sunset, rainbow,

butterfl y or cloud that looks like Mickey

Mouse, she fi nds them. It’s a constant

reminder of the simple things in life.

Justin Cooper, 2 years old, he’s my little spark

plug. My little boy is fearless! He’ll probably

end up being a stuntman. It’s hard to point

out his special qualities since he’s 2, but he’s

a curious little boy. I love watching him fi gure

things out.

Where do you work? Investor and

Consultant

What are your favorite hobbies? Photography, snowboarding, scuba diving and

live music. I love genealogy and have become

my family’s historian because of it.

What would the perfect day spent with your children include?

I have two perfect days with my kids.

Day 1 is Sunday. Every Sunday is arts and

crafts in the morning or makeup time with

daddy. Joey loves to paint my nails and

put make up on my face. She thinks it’s

hysterical. Then it’s swimming at noon and

snuggling for nap time on the

couch. That’s my perfect day.

Day 2 is on the boat

wakeboarding or water

tubing. There’s nothing

better than watching your

kids conquer a fear, learn

something new, and then

excel at it. It’s an awesome experience!

What’s your favorite date night spot? Hard

to say since I haven’t really dated anyone yet.

If I had to pick something I’d say dinner at

Himmarshee with some live music for dessert.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Content.

How do you stay involved with your community? My work allows me to be

fl exible so I’m able to stay involved by playing

an active role with my children’s schooling.

I’m able to volunteer at least once a month

or anytime their class needs an extra set of

eyes.

Where can you be found on your day/night off when you’re not with your children? If a favorite band of mine is in

town I’ll probably be there otherwise it’s

either dinner with friends or dressed down on

the couch channel surfi ng.

How much time do you spend with your kids? You always hear about the dad that

moves to another state, who barely sees

their kids, or some

exaggerated nightmare. Folks

rarely hear of the father who’s the primary

caregiver. I spend as much time as possible

with my children which for me equals about

3 weeks a month. The more time I’m able to

spend with my children, the happier I am.

How do you juggle being a bachelor… and a father? First and foremost I’m a father so

it hasn’t really been a juggling act. I made

a conscience decision to not date until now.

Divorce is rough and can be very confusing

for any child regardless of age. I wanted my

kids (and my step-children) to have a sense of

security and stability during the adjustment.

It’s my job as a parent to protect their

innocence when the trials and tribulations of

life creep up on them, especially at such an

early age. I think I’ve done a pretty good job

at that which is why I’m listening to friends

and family to “put myself out there”. I do

miss sharing my experiences with someone

which I think is a sign to start the “juggling”

act of bachelorhood again.

How many children do you have? I have a son and a daughter.

Miles and Addison ‘Addie’ are 11 year old twins. Both make the

Honor Roll continuously. Miles is in Gator Run’s Gifted Program

and hasn’t received a B in years. He also spoke in front of the

Weston City Commission two years ago. Addie is a Chief Patrol

and spoke two months ago at the Gator Run PTA Volunteer

Breakfast. Addie is into art and takes gymnastics at TAG

Gymnastics. Miles plays AYSO Soccer in the Fall and Lacrosse for

the Weston Warriors in the Spring. Both children attend Camp

Blue Ridge for a month over the summer.

Where do you work? I am a Vice President at Steven Douglas

Associates.

What are your favorite hobbies? Photography and antiques.

I especially like Art Deco radios and gadgets from the Machine

Age. I also enjoy traveling, computers and the Internet.

What would the perfect day spent with your children include? Separately it would be any Pro sporting event with

Miles and Indian Princess Campouts or the Father/Daughter

Dance with Addie. Together it would include a bike ride, the pool

and a BBQ. Addie also likes Father/Daughter dates at Ireland’s

Steakhouse (her pick always).

What is your favorite date night spot? Café Martorano’s at

the Hard Rock.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Committed

How do you stay involved with your community? I am on the

Board of Directors for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce,

Chair of the Executive Re-Employment and Outplacement

Task Force and part of the Greater Miami Society for Human

Resources Management. I participate in Weston YMCA’s Indian

Princess Program (Chief of the Crow Tribe 2010-2011). Over the

years I’ve also been the Chair of the Community Development

District, a Weston Area Chamber of Commerce Founding Member

and member of the YMCA of Greater Miami Board Development

Committee.

Where can you be found on your day/night off when you’re not with your children? Café Martorano’s, Acquolina, Smoke on

the Water Cigar Bar, relaxing by my pool or in my hot tub.

What are you most proud of? My

kids. They went through losing their

mother to cancer when they were

almost 5 and have continued to grow

into really nice, well-adjusted, happy

kids with a great circle of friends.

How do you juggle being a bachelor… and a father? Anyone who

knows me knows I have more help than

almost anyone. We have a very nice

and caring nanny. My family is close

by and always supportive and I have my

late wife’s best friend who is like family

to me and an amazing infl uence and

guardian to my children. Addie and Miles

have bedrooms at her place less than fi ve

minutes away and love to stay there. That

gives me a lot of free time and I never have

to worry about the kids.

How many children do you have?I have a daughter named Lindsay Rose. She is

8 years old and is the most caring child. She

has a great personality and can adapt to any

situation with any of her peers.

Where do you work? I am the CEO and

President of Independence Title, Inc. in Fort

Lauderdale Florida. I hope on May 10th my

newly released book SOLD will become a

best seller so stay tuned.

What are your favorite hobbies? My

hobbies include fi shing, diving, boating,

cruising and traveling.

What would the perfect day spent with your daughter include? The perfect day

with Lindsay would be spent out on the water

fi shing, tubing or a mix of both.

What is your favorite date night spot?Well date night would be a nice dinner

(Capital Grille or Sushi would be my favorite

pick). Date day would be scuba diving and a

nice burger, fries and ice cream afterward.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Go-Giver

How do you stay involved in the community? I volunteer at my daughter’s

school, Heron Heights Elementary, as a room

dad. I am an offi cer in the Seminole Nation

Indian Princess Aztec Tribe (YMCA dad and

daughter program) and most importantly, I sit

on the Board of Directors of LifeNet4Families

formally known as the Cooperative Feeding

Program of Broward County, whose purpose

is to reduce the pain and suffering of

individuals and families in poverty.

Where can you be found on your day/night off when you’re not with your children? When I do not have my daughter

I am usually either volunteering, traveling or

out on my boat fi shing or scuba diving. I do

love to go out for dinner so in the evening

I am usually out somewhere in Downtown

Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale

or South Beach.

How do you juggle being a bachelor...and a father? I have my daughter

about 45-50% of the time and I am

usually working a lot as well. My

evenings without my daughter are

my time to socialize. I also typically

have two weekends a month

without my daughter so that gives

me time to go out. I am very

So let me take this opportunity to say a word of thanks to Weston Lifestyle Magazine for giving me the opportunity to share this guest column and for their partnership in many of the events sponsored by the Rotary Club throughout the year. I also want to thank all the members of this community that have supported us and helped us make a difference during this 25th Anniversary year.

Those thanks go out to the crowd, estimated by the City of Weston at 12,000, that fl ooded Weston Regional Park to attend the 8th Annual Free Rock Concert sponsored by the Rotary Club and the City of Weston. Folks came early, set up their lawn chairs, spread their blankets, and opened up their picnic baskets to get ready to hear a great concert provided by Florida favorites The Outlaws and The Blue Oyster Cult. Thanks too, to Rotarian Tom Kallman who organizes this great event.

Weston’s C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) was on hand at the concert to provide

support and to recruit new members for this vitally needed community program. In the event of a disaster such a hurricane, the fi rst responders (Fire Rescue and Police) numbering about 240 cannot possibly respond to all 65,000 residents. It is the goal of city leaders to have trained CERT members in every neighborhood. 25 Weston Rotarians have undergone and graduated from CERT training.*

As our high school students graduate and look towards the higher education that will determine their future, that education is looking more and more unaffordable. At our May 31st meeting, the Rotary Club was able to award 50 scholarships to deserving graduating seniors from Western and Cypress Bay High Schools. Thanks are due to the sponsors of these scholarships, who participated in the 25th annual Rotary golf tournament: The WestonLawyers.com Golf Classic. Michael Freedland and his law partner Anthony Russo were title sponsors of this event for the 5th

year in a row. In addition Michael, who was in charge of recruiting its sponsors, led our 124 members in producing a sold-out event enjoyed by all. Our Scholarship Breakfast was a great celebration for students, parents, administrators, sponsors, and Rotarians.

Finally, thanks for reading and becoming aware of the work of the Rotary Club of Weston and providing your support. Together we can and do make a difference.

Rotary Club of Weston meets every Thursday morning from 7:30 – 8:30 AM at Weston Hills Country Club for breakfast and a lively program. If you would like more information, please contact me [email protected] or any Weston Rotarian. And, for our latest happenings, be sure to check out our club website at www.WestonRotary.org, and the “Rotary Club of Weston” Fan Page on FaceBook. **If you are interested in becoming a CERT member, please contact Chief Harris Bouchillon of the Weston Fire Rescue Department.

“I HAVE TRIED EVERY DIET KNOWN TO MAN (OR MOMS) THESE LAST FEW YEARS – TO NO AVAIL.”

Alyson continued to tell me her story. “For example, this past summer, my best friend fl ew me to their home in Sonoma for an entire month. We ate nothing but organic everything, lean protein, I drank 150 ounce-plus of water a day and did a high intensity workout every morning mixing up interval training with boot camp at her gym. In exactly 30 days – I lost a grand total of THREE pounds. I didn’t even lose the initial ‘water weight’ everyone else loses.”

I empathized, “It’s hard to stay motivated with minimal results.”

“I’m willing to starve myself, if that would work. I even did two rounds of hCG. My wallet’s lighter, but that’s about it.”

“The FDA recently published a website, www.fda.gov/hcgdiet, detailing how hCG diet products are illegal, and how restrictive diets such as that one can cause electrolyte disturbances,

an irregular heartbeat and are potentially fatal.” I continued, “But looking at your diet history, I don’t think the problem is one of eating too much.”

“Dr. Woliner, what else could it be? I have a friend that blew up taking Abilify for her depression, and another while on Actos for diabetes, but I’m not on any medications.”

“It’s true that many drugs have weight gain as a common side effect [1]. But there are other causes of weight gain. With your other symptoms of cold intolerance, fatigue, and constipation, I’m thinking that you have an untreated thyroid condition [2].”

“I begged my other doctors to treat me for that, but they all said no.”

“Some doctors focus too much on lab tests without considering the patient’s history and physical exam fi ndings [3].

Thyroid hormone resistance is more common than people realize.”

Alyson sat with a puzzled look on her face. “So, even if these doctors said my tests were normal, I might still have a thyroid problem? [4]”

“The word ‘normal’ has many meanings. There is a difference between ‘common’ and ‘optimal’ [5]. Rather than using a range that includes people who are overweight and being treated for high cholesterol and other conditions, perhaps it would be better to use narrower ranges of persons who feel ‘dandy’ [6].”

“Does anyone even use that word anymore?”

“My practice is built on patient-to-patient referrals. Just liking my bedside manner is not enough to convince your friends to see me. You have to glow. So yes, I do plan on making you feel dandy.”

After fi nishing Alyson’s physical exam, my staff used our Korr indirect calorimetry machine to measure her metabolic rate [7]. “You’re at ‘minus 20%’. That’s one of slowest metabolism’s I’ve ever seen!”

“How do we fi x that?”“I use a holistic approach that

combines behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, and of course medications [8,9]. I prefer to use T3 based drugs as they have been shown to cause signifi cantly more weight loss than T4 drugs such as Synthroid alone [10].”

As I ramped up Alyson’s dose of thyroid medication, her fatigue and other symptoms began to resolve. To be on the safe side, I periodically rechecked her EKG and bone density, which remained normal [11].

When Sharon Brown decided she wanted to go back to work, she wasn’t sure where to begin. She had built a successful career before her children were born but after her last daughter came along, she and her husband agreed that she would become a full-time mom. “I loved raising my kids, but once my youngest hit high school I found that I had more and more time on my hands.”

It was important that she had the freedom and fl exibility to be home when her children came home from school. She also wanted the ability to attend their soccer games, tennis matches and other events. Additionally, the thought of spending every day in an offi ce or working in a retail shop did not exactly appeal to her.

After a few frustrating weeks searching for the right job opportunity, a friend told her about FlashBanc. As one of the fastest growing Merchant Processing companies in the Country, FlashBanc provides thousands of businesses nationwide with the ability to accept credit cards.

After some research, Sharon decided to join FlashBanc as one of their sales

partners. “It was very exciting and it felt great to reinvigorate my career,” Sharon said. “Once I joined the team, I knew immediately that I had made the right decision. The initial as well as the ongoing support and training that I have received from FlashBanc has been outstanding.”

In a few short years, FlashBanc has built a network of sales partners throughout North America. FlashBanc trains and supports individuals and assists them along the way as they launch their new career. Their sales partners include stay at home moms, successful businessmen, retired individuals, students and sales professionals.” According to Jason Wright, FlashBanc’s chief operating offi cer, “Our sales partners are in business for themselves, but not by themselves. All sales partners are assigned to a sales manager

who works to provide them with training, assists them with

closing deals and helps them grow their

income.” Sharon adds, “I love

my sales

manager, Kenny. He has become one of my closest friends. The entire FlashBanc team is extraordinary.”

One of the most exciting aspects of the merchant services industry is the income potential. “In addition to earning money up front for every new account (paid the next day), sales partners earn a monthly residual for each account in their portfolio,” said Wright. Sharon concludes, “I earn money every time someone swipes a credit card at one of my customers’ businesses. It is a great industry in this economy, because it’s recession proof. Prior to joining FlashBanc, I had never sold anything in my life. If I can do it, anyone can!”

Day or night, conditions such as fevers and fl u are treated with the same expertise in the same state-of-the-art facility as critical care concerns.

It’s midnight and you’ve quickly spiked a fever. It’s late evening and your mother is struggling with pain from a urinary tract infection. It’s just after dinner and your husband’s arm is hanging awkwardly after falling from the roof of the house, and you’re panicking—now. From cold and fl u symptoms to time-critical emergency situations, like heart attacks and strokes, the Emergency Department (ED) at Cleveland Clinic Florida cares for thousands of patients each year, effectively and effi ciently.A commitment to high-quality urgent care

Backed by the resources of Broward County’s top hospital, as rated by U.S. News & World Report, patients can feel at ease knowing that they have access to urgent care within 30 minutes, where they can be seen by board-certifi ed physicians and registered nurses specializing in emergency medicine. As part of a world-class hospital system, the staff has access to the most advanced equipment for diagnosis and treatment of common healthcare problems, such as:

Allergic reactionsBone fracturesBurnsEar infectionsEye infections and minor injuriesInsect bitesLacerationsSports injuriesSinus infectionsSprains, strains and soft tissue injuriesStrep throat

Advanced technologyThe use of the most advanced

protocols in the country combined with a state-of-the-art facility has led to the ED being ranked among the top 5% in the nation for emergency medicine for two consecutive years, in a study conducted by a leading healthcare ratings organization.

Should a visit require the assistance of a specialist or become an emergency situation, ED physicians collaborate with on-site colleagues in 35 other medical specialties, providing patients the highest quality care using the latest technological resources from the minute they arrive at the hospital to the moment they’re discharged.

Through utilization of the LIFENET STEMI Management Solution, paramedics are able to transmit EKG readings from the ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Florida while en route, to assure that the appropriate medical staff and equipment are ready to take over treatment of the patient on arrival at the hospital.

In the case of a heart attack, Cleveland Clinic Florida’s team has Broward County’s best average “door to balloon” time. Within 55

minutes of arrival, a patient can be in surgery for balloon angioplasty, which restores blood fl ow to the heart. The national standard is 90 minutes. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s ED also is one of only two emergency departments in Broward County with intravascular cooling capability, which decreases the chance of brain or nerve damage in stroke and heart attack. Peace of mind when you need it

Cleveland Clinic Florida ED services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And, patients who visit will notice that the time to see a doctor is dramatically less than what they may expect from an emergency room. Routine processes have been put in place to expedite patient care, improve patient satisfaction and outcomes, and to enhance the total patient experience. Upon check-in, medical staff help to direct the fl ow of non-critical and emergency arrivals, as well as providing patients and families with personal assistance.

Quality, patient-centered care is the cornerstone of Cleveland Clinic Florida’s philosophy, and the organization continues to set the standards at the forefront of medicine. So, because infections, illness and emergency conditions don’t always happen during regular business hours, the ED at Cleveland Clinic Florida, located at 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. in Weston, provides highly regarded and rapid access to urgent medical care right when you need it.

THE NON-SURGICAL EYE LIFT, NECK LIFT, WRINKLES AND SKIN LAXITY REVISION!

This new procedure can be used to diminish and erase:

Pellevé is the long-awaited solution! In one short, easy, very comfortable treatment, you can experience a marked improvement in the appearance of fi ne lines, skin tightening and wrinkles for up to six months! We are seeing wonderful results in as few as 1-4 treatments.

The technology of the Pellevé system sets it apart from other wrinkle-reducing treatments. When you are treated with Pellevé, a more focused Radio Frequency energy is delivered to areas of the skin where elasticity is lacking and lines have begun to develop. This energy heats the skin, causing it to begin producing collagen. Collagen is a key component in healthy, toned-looking skin.

It delivers heat to deep layers of the skin where fat resides. This “controlled focused energy” spurs the contraction of these deep tissues for an overall smoothing effect.

The heat energy also stimulates the production of new collagen over time, resulting in fi rmer, tighter, smoother skin. The practitioner adjusts the strength of the delivered energy based on feedback from the patient throughout the session.

The Pellevé system requires no anesthesia and treatment can be conducted in as little as 15 minutes per area. We simply, apply a thin layer

of gel to your face prior to treatment. Most patients experience only a warming sensation on the skin when the Pellevé hand piece is applied.

Patients often report that immediately after treatment skin feels tighter similar to Botox. When it takes effect, most patients often experience immediate results, and a reduction in the visibility of wrinkles at the treatment sites. Over the course of the next six months, you will continue to see smoother, more beautiful skin.

While many patients see results after just one session of Pellevé, we may recommend multiple treatments to help you achieve your optimal aesthetic goals. The total number of treatments can vary and is based on your individual skin needs. It takes up to two months for the full effects of Pellevé to be seen.

There is no downtime or side effects except the ocassional very mild swelling or redness which normally resides in an hour.

“Often, you never get a second chance to make a fi rst impression.” From TV commercials to the wisdom of our parents, the saying is timeless and true.

But while fi rst impressions come once, we have countless chances to improve – or ruin – the impression we’ve made with those around us.

It’s called “Reputation Management” – the process of cultivating our image. It can be as simple as the words we speak, the way we’re dressed, the advice we give, or even the way our Website, blog, Facebook or Twitter feed comes across.

Here are four ways to manage your reputation:

Beware the two sides of social media. In the Age of Social Media, we’re encouraged to be

ourselves. We speak openly about politics and societal issues, and comment on what others say or do. We’re emboldened because we’re “among friends.” But one bad posting or Tweet could harm your reputation overnight or get you trouble with boss. What if a tweet you posted was retweeted or posted to someone’s Website – and then found by Google? Would the comments cast you in an unfavorable light – among prospective clients or even employers (who increasingly are searching social media for cues and clues about job candidates)? Consider the case of the Miami Fire captain who posted a controversial opinion on the Trayvon Martin case on his Facebok page. His posting was picked up by another website and the next thing you know it was headline news in the mainstream media. He’s been accused publicly of being a racist and he’s in hot water with his bosses.

What’s the Website say? The Internet has become the power tool of reputation management. Make sure it’s speaking kindly about you. Post your skills and expertise. Include testimonials; nothing speaks to your reputation better than the words of satisfi ed

clients. Dress for success. If you’re in a

professional service business – an attorney, accountant, marketing executive or a physician – every time you step out of the house you may bump into someone new or come across an existing client. What does your attire say about you?

Dialing for impact. Experts say to “Speak with a smile in your voice.” When calling a client or prospect, speak as if you’re truly interested in talking to them. If you can’t, then don’t make the call.

Reputation management is not a once-and-done affair. It’s a process that needs daily attention to ensure that fi rst impression lasts forever!

Developed for the sophisticated, discriminating fi ne-diner, NYY Steak delivers an extraordinary and entertaining experience from the moment you enter the restaurant. The concept of NYY Steak was founded in The Bronx, New York in the spring of 2009 as the premier fi ne dining destination of the New Yankee Stadium, in its inaugural season. The concept was established as a joint venture between the New York Yankees and Seminole Gaming Entertainment. The Yankees are the premiere sports franchise in the world and hold a record 27 world baseball championships; The Seminole tribe is America’s only unconquered tribe. NYY Steak is fashioned after Seminole Gaming’s award winning Council Oak Steaks & Seafood restaurants in their casinos in Tampa and Hollywood, Florida.

The walk from the north entrance of the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino into the front of the restaurant was designed to transport you to the entry way of Yankee Stadium. The thought and design that went into creating the visual was absolutely inventive. A New York Yankee true encounter here in Broward County.

The entrance once inside is understated. The cocktail lounge is modern, inviting and leads you to the hostess area where a glass butcher shop and knife wall are featured. As a purveyor of U.S.D.A. Prime 21 to 28 day dry-aged beef, NYY serves steaks, chops, prime-rib, chicken, fresh seafood and shellfi sh offerings of shrimp, crab, oysters, clams, lobsters and fi n fi sh.

Once inside, dark woods, classic booth and table settings create an ambiance that is comfortable and clubby without being intimidating. The open glass kitchen allows you to enjoy a view of the various chefs creating the seasoned tastes for

the evening. Chef William Phillips takes great pride in the choices displayed in the glass butcher shop. He is now the restaurant chef creating the menu locally beginning in February when the establishment opened. Your eyes can also encounter the pastry chef, Mark Weideman creating desserts that will entice your sweet need and excite your palate. There is a beautiful glass view into the wine cellar that will inspire

you to review their fi nest wine offerings. And, the infamous Yankee Signature Walls and classic Yankee images throughout can maintain one’s attention and encourage storytelling all evening.

We are greeted by Petrus Louis Turcano, the general manager from Romania and our sommelier along with Earl, our server who knows the history about the joint venture and all things NYY Steak. Both are genuine in their approach and immediately share what’s top on the menu to enjoy and pair. He mentions the New Zealand Lamb, domestic and dry-aged rubbed with roasted garlic herbs and sea salt placed on a tomato risotto with fresh mint leaves. Already we lean forward with interest.

“Leave room for the fl aming volcano,” Earl states. “You absolutely must taste it…it’s covered in heath crunch and 151 proof Rum is poured on top.” I am now focused on having dessert fi rst of course!

LOBSTER GRILLED CHEESE AND TOMATO SOUP

The experience becomes more nostalgic when your plate is set. The Yankees have retired fi fteen numbers for sixteen players, the most in Major League Baseball. Each dinner plate at NYY Steak has a retired number on it.

And the tasting begins.A basket of pretzel bread with

white cheddar cheese and whole grain mustard, asiago crisps and cinnamon with sugar signature crisps accompanied by salted butter is placed on the table. Delicious! Tuna tartar, beef (sirloin) carpaccio, oyster rockefeller with sambuca are placed in the middle of the table. My mouth watering and eyes dancing found my two favorites quickly. Colossal stuffed barbeque shrimp wrapped in bacon placed over cilantro popcorn blended with strips of bacon will give your taste buds a fantastic, tangy experience while the scallops with blackberry reduction are crispy on top and melt like butter in your mouth. My two favorites will become your “must haves!” But, if you are a beef carpaccio fan, the seracha (Vietnamese hot sauce) served razor thin with toast points will kick your heartbeat up a pace!

There are several salads that are wonderful but don’t miss the head of baby iceberg served with crumbled blue cheese, bacon and French dressing accompanied by a shot of a vodka martini marinated blue cheese stuffed olive.

Entrees included twin South African lobster tails broiled with lemon butter, Chilean sea bass with a red wine reduction garnished with micro greens that was crispy on the outside and fl aky on the inside served over a wonderful risotto. The dry-aged twenty one to twenty eight day, twenty ounce center cut NY strip almost looks like a fi let. It’s fl avorful,

tender, charred and buttery. But, this can’t rival the “unsurpassed” winner of the evening, the long bone cowboy Ribeye “branded” with your initials in the bone. Crispy on the outside, tender, juicy on the inside it is the signature steak to experience. Coated in peanut oil, the chef explains they do not trim this at all therefore the fl avor remains…and it is beyond words. But don’t take my word for it, taste it for yourself!

The sides accompanying the entrees are worthy of tasting. The corn is fi re roasted with fresh bacon, sweet cream and herbs. The mushroom buttons are touched with olive oil, garlic and rosemary herbs. And the creamed spinach is combined with shallots and lemon pepper. All the sides are full of fl avor and are enough to share.

Remember I mentioned the fl aming volcano for dessert? This is a show and is worth tasting. If you want something more all-American, try the over-sized chocolate chip cookies fi lled with vanilla ice cream accompanied with fudge on the plate, sprinkles, raspberry garnished and touched with fresh whipped cream. It’s a mixture of everything wonderful. Don’t hesitate to order the chocolate blackout cake if you are a chocolate lover. This is sinful and enough to take home for a mid-night treat!

I don’t want to leave you without sharing two fantastic options from the lounge menu. They can be ordered for dinner, but they are not featured on the menu. The lobster sandwich is crisp on the outside and fi lled with chunks of lobster served with tomato soup. It is fantastic! The NY aged steak sandwich with fries is served with balsamic ketchup. It is my new favorite condiment! This is great to share even as an appetizer.

The experience at NYY Steak will be a treat whether you are a Yankee fan or fancy other sports. The chef’s are approachable, the wait staff are impeccable and the cool vibe will make the experience worthy of more than one visit.

BY BRUCE TURKEL

AND another thing...

EYES AND EARS ARE EVERYWHERE

Buck’s Restaurant in Woodside, California, is ground zero for venture capitalists that invest in technology. I’m in town to give a presentation in Silicon Valley and stopped by this diner to eat breakfast and drink in some of the local culture.

Like lots of small, family-owned breakfast spots, Buck’s has a vast collection of local memorabilia hanging on the wall. Except where you might expect display cases of trout fl ies or Harley Davidson parts, Buck’s walls are festooned with silicon chips and tech discoveries.

The people look different here, too. Most are young men, conscientiously scruffy in their North Face fl eece vests and expensive Italian eyeglasses. The few women who are here are also young and fresh-faced, and look like they just strolled off a ski slope.

Almost everyone is on their smartphone or tablet. Those who aren’t are sharing a presentation on their MacBook Pros. And everyone’s talking pretty loudly. But unlike coffee shops in New York, where everyone talks about fi nancial schemes, or restaurants in LA where the chatter is all about “the biz” (movies and entertainment), the talk here is all tech-related “speeds and feeds.”

The couple in the booth next to me is a perfect example. The guy is in his late 30s, studiously underdressed with a severe case of bed head. His date, a bubbly blond in her 20s, is hanging on his every word and expressing her interest with staccato outbursts of self-conscious laughter.

What caught my attention were the words he was using to keep her attention. Instead of the bon mots of typical seduction, his romancing was peppered with terms such as “milestone-based,” “seed relationships,” “mobile solutions,” “platforms,” and “self-partnering.” I’m not sure all of these are even real tech terms but she kept giggling appreciatively so his rap must have been working.

The other thing he was doing to impress her was listing the various companies his venture fi rm has invested in. And here’s where it gets interesting: The logo embroidered on his jacket read “Azure Capital” and he was talking about one of their larger investments, an online video site called “TwitVid.” So with a few stabs on my web-enabled iPad we pulled up his company’s site and found his name and CV. His headshot confi rmed that the guy on the screen and the guy on the make were the same.

Are you following what just happened?

Talk about loose lips sinking ships. Thanks to ubiquitous Internet information and a loud-mouthed Lothario, we were able to trace and substantiate an overheard rumor with real market confi rmation. If I was a reporter, a competitor or a corporate spy looking for info, imagine what could have happened.

If there were something in it for me or for my clients, I could have tweeted the information he discussed immediately or posted it online. Either way, it’s possible that his partners or his competition could have read about him and his secrets before he even got back to the offi ce from breakfast. And with info aggregator sites such as TechCrunch and Mashable acting more and more like scandal site TMZ and actively scouring the web for up-to-the-minute scoops, the info about Azure and TwitVid could’ve been worldwide before lunch. Luckily for my new friend, I have no interest in his business nor in publicly embarrassing him.

But all of a sudden, people everywhere are armed with digital cameras and web-enabled devices that turn them into 24/7 Internet paparazzi and the worlds of business, news, and politics will never be the same. Gary Hart, Donna Rice and the Real Monkey Business were only the beginning. Soon television reality shows and whole Internet channels will be dedicated to unscripted, caught-in-the-act user-generated “gotcha” videos.

This revelation suggests that not only should people be more circumspect about what they say and where they say it, but that new chances will continue to pop up for rumor-based marketing opportunities. Also, that formerly no-brainer branding vehicles such as logo-ed shirts and caps and vanity license plates should now be used judiciously because of their ability to give the cyber sleuth a quick and easy way to start their search. After all, most of us have secrets and skeletons we’d rather keep hidden in the closet. And today’s technology is going to make that harder and harder.
