(I admit at times that I fall short of the ex- pectations that I have for myself as a Christian.) I have a suspicion that most Christians struggle to feel good about themselves and would feel uncomfortable saying, "Look at me; I am the real thing." Well, there is a big difference between a Christian who recognizes his shortcomings and one who is simply a pretender. For instance, the Lord knew the hearts and minds of the religious elite and determined that some were hypo- crites. The Lord said about them: 7 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 8 This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. (Matthew 15:7-8) “1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2 saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; 3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them(Matthew 23:1-3). The reason the Lord declared them to be hypocrites was that they lacked sincerity and did not practice what they preached. They were pretenders, only acting the part of the highly religious. What about Christians: are there tangible ways in which we may prove we are the real things”? Yes. For example, all authentic Christians are doers of Continued inside . . . Are You the Real Deal?

For years, Coca Cola made the claim to be the “real thing.” Though I grew up in Minor Hill drinking Sun Drop, I enjoyed a cold Coca Cola as well. When I say Coke, I am not talking about any of those cheap imitations. Sorry Pepsi drinkers, but I include Pepsi in the category of cheap imitations, for there is only one real thing. BIRTHDAY & ANNIVERSARIES

the Word and not merely hearers. “But prove your-selves doers of the Word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (James 1:22). True believers not only talk the talk, they walk the walk, so to speak. A true believer does not need to sound the trumpet to call attention to himself and his “good deeds” (Matthew 6:1-4). His quality of life and the deeds that he performs speak for him. He proves him-self authentic by the life he lives. Thus, let us show by what we do that we are not merely talkers but doers as well. According to Scriptures, there are other ways that we can prove that we are genuine believers. Paul said to the church at Philippi, “Do all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:14-15). Knowing myself and human nature the way I do, our willingness to practice doing "all things without grumbling or disputing” (emphasis mine) is perhaps the greatest proof that we are the real thing. I know from my own life that the easiest thing in the world to do is complain about every little thing. Name it ,and we can find a reason to complain about it. Thus, if you desire to prove to others and yourself, ask the Lord to help you to overcome the human tendency to complain and grumble. Prove you are not a grumble head and people will no doubt be-lieve you are the real thing. Brothers and sisters, I understand for many, including some of our most faithful Christian breth-ren, they struggle to exude confidence in their rela-tionship with God. I have personally known Christian brethren who seem to think it was unbecoming of them to express confidence because Paul said, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall” (I Corinthians 10:12). On the other hand, some were convinced that salvation was solely dependent on works and they could not be sure if they had done enough to save themselves. Brothers and sisters, while it is true that we can demonstrate by the lives we live that we are the "real thing" kind of Christian, we must never for-get that ultimately our eternal salvation is a gift from God through our Lord Jesus Christ. “For the wages of sin is death, but thy free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Rick

The following is an e-mail from Rod Rutherford, who preach-es for the Gatlinburg Church of Christ. The Gatlinburg Church of Christ was destroyed in the wildfires that have dev-astated the towns of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevier-ville , TN. Please keep the families in these town in your pray-ers. Good report. Very thorough. Since last talking on the phone with many of you I have learned that three members have lost their homes. A friend called a friend in the Gatlinburg fire department to ask about the church building. He was told that everything on Reagan Drive was destroyed, either burned down or badly dam-aged beyond use. This would include our church building. We plan to worship with the Sevierville church Sunday and then have a congregational meeting to discuss our future. Our building was fully insured. If anyone wants to help those who lost their homes, we ask them to send a contribution to the Gatlinburg church of Christ and mark it For Fire Relief. We will use it to help our mem-bers first and then others as funds permit. The address is: Gat-linburg church of Christ, P.O. Box 361, Gatlinburg, TN 37738. Thanks for your interest, prayers and concern. Rod You can email Rod at [email protected].
