The writ is droppedBy Linda Wegner

For us Canadians, theWrit has been dropped, thegloves are off and it's no holdsbarred. We're going to thepolls.

Reaching back to youthfulmemories, I recall snugglingclose to a battery operatedradio, tucked judiciously un-der the blankets, of course, and listening to news of anyand every election. I neverpretended to understand allthe debates or issues but I wasfascinated by the fervour withwhich speeches were deliv-ered, intrigued by the predic-tions made by lauded expertson both or many sides of anyargument. As a young teen-

By Helen WallerIt was a warm, sunny, pretty much perfect day at the lake.

(Is there any other kind?)The big guys were gone golfing and the ladies were at the

beach, relaxing. Only one problem. We had one eight-year-old little boy, who was too small to golf that course but hada big amount of energy.

We had played mini-golf with him (spent a week’s wage onthe game, to be exact), gone swimming, built sand castles(which more or less resembled roads – he is the son of afarmer, after all), gone biking, spent time by the lake, played

What if?

"Judge not, lest ye be judged." Have you ever heard that? Most of the time, I hear it (or sayit) aiming at people who seem to have their noses out of joint about what someone else is orisn't doing. When I use it, I usually mean that we should keep our noses out of other peoples'business and not assume we know how everyone else should live their lives. Which means, ofcourse, that I'm judging the judgie people for judging! Kind of a vicious cycle once you getgoing on it…

But is that what Jesus really meant? Was He really the first advocate for tolerance andnon-judgmentalism?

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not becondemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A goodmeasure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Luke 6: 37-38

Jesus isn't just telling us not to judge others. He's showing us that we will GET whatever weGIVE OUT. It's actually pretty much common sense, if you think about it. "What goesaround comes around" or "You reap what you sow".

The tough part is figuring out what we are actually giving out. Most of us aren't very awareof what we're like to live or work with. So how do we measure if we're giving out what wethink we are? I would suggest that the best measure of what you are GIVING OUT is whatyou feel that you are GETTING from others. So, are you feeling judged by others? Perhapsyou could reflect on how easily you judge them. Are you being treated unfairly or harshly? It's probably an indication that you are being harsher than you realize. Are you surroundedby love, generosity and affirmation? Then you're probably sending good vibes out on aregular basis.

You can see how this is a powerful principle for taking control of your life. Whatever youwant more of, give it away! The change won't happen right away, but over time the trend inyour relationships will be that the new measure you use on others will be used on you as well.

Peace to you, Pastor Jay, Weyburn Free Methodist Church

Judging others

ager I even thought about acareer in such a noble call-ing. That was more years agothan I care to recall.

I am not going to commenton our upcoming election assuch but here are a few of mythoughts on the matter ofmaking choices in our per-sonal as well as our nationallives: first, we need the wis-dom of God because that'sthe beginning of true knowl-edge; next, by asking God forHis wisdom, we can gain abetter understanding of jus-tice, equity and right living;finally, we need God's wis-dom in order to enjoy life toits fullest.

Throughout the biblicalWisdom Book, Proverbs, thevirtues of wisdom are con-

stantly extolled. Wisdom willpreserve you, promote you, direct your steps and "keepyour foot from being caught"(3:26; 4:1-9). When lifepushes us to make convenientor hasty decisions, seeking toknow God's ways in our per-sonal lives is a source of theguidance and security that weneed.

We're also given instruc-tions when it comes to gov-ernment. While we can't con-trol every decision they make,we are instructed to pray"for…all who are in author-ity that we may lead a quietand peaceable life in all god-liness and reverence".

He hears the prayer of therighteous.

“Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune;but great minds rise above them.”

- Washington Irving

Thought for the week

catch with a football... and he still wanted more! This was only the first hour at the beach. What on earth were we going to do to keep him

entertained for the rest of the afternoon?Well, as a Mom, I did what most women do. I headed to the bathroom, hoping for a few

minutes of peace and quiet, and surprisingly he didn't follow me. He stayed on the blanketat the beach with my friend, a Mom of three boys herself. She had another trick up hersleeve. It's called the game of “What If?”.

The game of “What if?” is pretty simple and easy to play (even while suntanning at thebeach). You simply ask the question “What if?” and add the rest. It’s up to your imagina-tion. So, the questions went something like this.

1. “If you could play for any hockey team in the world, who would it be?”After careful thought, and with a Montreal Canadiens shirt on his back, his answer was

surprising, yet statistically smart. “Team Canada, because they always win”.Definitely didn't see that coming from a boy who eats, sleeps and dreams of the Montreal

Canadiens, but he has definitely been paying more attention to TSN highlights over theyears than I have ever given him credit for.

2. “If you could play for any football team in the world, who would it be?”“The Saskatchewan Roughriders”. (Apparently, he hasn't been paying attention to the

TSN highlights after all.)Well, there's one fan who hasn't given up hope on them yet. Maybe that's just the sort of

thing the team needs to hear right now. Perhaps someone should forward them this articleand let them know that not every fan in Saskatchewan has put their season tickets up forsale. In fact, this little guy just went to his first ever Roughrider game two weeks ago and hisbiggest disappointment wasn't their loss, but the fact that he was sitting up way too high inthe bleachers to catch one on those footballs they throw into the crowd.

3. The final question was, “If you could play for any baseball team in the world, whichteam would it be?”

“I would like to play with the Weyburn Beavers”.Well, gentlemen of the Weyburn Beavers, you can add that to the list of accomplishments

this season. You have made franchise history, hit the first

ever post-season grand slam, scored the mostruns in a post-season game, and had your coachreceive the Coach of the Year award (deservinglyso). Now, after hosting a Beavers’ baseball campa few weeks ago, that a little boy wearing aSubban T-shirt attended, you have also madethat little boy’s bucket list.

Go Beavers!

BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

By the time you read this,Corey Chamblin may havealready been fired.

But I highly doubt it. Andthe more I hear and thinkabout it, he may not be dis-missed at all.

Amidst the SaskatchewanRoughriders' 0-6 start, whichincluded a 30-5 loss atEdmonton on Friday, a re-port came out via TSN overthe weekend that Rider GMBrendan Taman was set torecommend the firing ofhead coach Corey Chamblinto club President CraigReynolds.

No one knows where TSNinsider Gary Lawless got thisinformation.

Oddly, this came less thana week after Lawless told thenation Taman would not befiring Chamblin, thus put-ting his own job in jeopardy.

Hence, the top sentenceof this column. Things arechanging by the minute herein Riderville and I've beendoing my best to stay in theshadows and try to reportonly the correct information,if any at all.

So as of today, Chamblinis employed by theSaskatchewan Roughriders ashead coach. In fact Saturdaynight, Chamblin told a re-porter it's "business as usual".

However Chamblin's paidto win football games andthe club is 0-6. The specula-tion is reasonable.

But let's go back for a sec-ond and examine Friday's gameand the reason this club is offto its worst start since 1979.

After the game the playersand the coach generallyagreed they had one of theirbetter games on defense allyear, holding Edmonton to23 or so points (7 were scoredon a pick six thrown by

rookie Rider quarterback BrettSmith).

The trouble here is theRoughriders won the coin tossbut gave the Eskimos the balland the wind to open thegame. The home teampromptly marched the ball 76-yards down the field andopened the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown reception byKenny Stafford for a 7-0 leadat the 5:40 mark. That's all theoffense they'd need for therest of the game.

So there's that.Saskatchewan quarterback

Brett Smith was in a hole be-fore he even took his first prosnap. And then the penaltiesstarted. The Rider players hadsaid before the game they allneeded to help out their rookiequarterback by cleaning uptheir game but they then pro-ceeded to take 17 penalties for127 yards. Many of them tookgreat plays, and first downs,by Smith and his receivers offthe board. Every offensive line-man was flagged on the nightwith the exception ofBrendon Labatte. The receiv-ers took turns going offside.

The Riders averaged 13.6penalties per game going intothe Edmonton contest so theyfar exceeded that total Fridaynight. And Chris Jones' Eski-mos kept their penalty totaldown to seven in this game.

The Riders are in no way adisciplined team, althoughwe've been told otherwise.

And therefore, Chamblinis on the hotseat at 0-6.

No matter that the Riders'top two quarterbacks aredown and the club has beenhit by a rash of adversity.

These are not your Dad'sRoughriders. Losing will notbe tolerated.

"Oh ya there's no setbackon that end," Brendan Taman

told me before Friday's game."This is a 'wins' business.Whoever's playing at what-ever position, we're expectedto go win the game."

My follow-up question tothat was if Taman's getting anedict from the higher-ups of"make the playoffs or else!"?

"We've been in the busi-ness long enough to knowthey don't have to say muchfor us to know we have towin," Taman explained."Whatever comes fromabove, comes from above. But all me and Corey can dois put the best guys out thereand try to win games. We'reworking towards that andhopefully we can get thataccomplished."

The TSN report threw thefranchise into chaos over theweekend. President CraigReynolds probably felt likehe's trying to navigate a mon-soon in a dingy. He andTaman huddled up on Sun-day but the contents of theirmeeting aren't known. Atleast not by me.

I was half expecting tohear Chamblin walked intothe offices and demanded tobe fired given the fact he waseffectively pantsed on na-tional television Saturday af-ternoon.

However from what I cangather, he hasn't.

And a CFL powerbrokertold me the possible replace-ments named by Lawless -Paul Lapolice and MikeBenevides - are hesitant tocome here due to the toxicenvironment which has beencreated.

How could you tie a canto Chamblin with no onelined up to replace him?

Stay tuned. This will onlyget more interesting fromhere on in.
