Fire brought quicklyunder control

The Weyburn fire department responded to a smallhouse fire on 2nd Street on July 11. Due to the quickresponse, the damage to the home appeared mini-mal.

Haying continues in muchof the province despite lim-ited plant growth due to theshortfall in precipitation.Livestock producers nowhave 24 per cent of the haycrop cut and 15 per centbaled or put into silage, ac-cording to SaskatchewanAgriculture's weekly CropReport.

Hay quality is currentlyrated as four per cent excel-lent, 43 per cent good, 34per cent fair and 19 per centpoor. Many hay swaths aresignificantly smaller thannormal and producers areconcerned that hay will bein short supply this year aspasture conditions continueto deteriorate from the lackof rainfall.

The Ministry of Agricul-ture has a Forage, Feed andCustom Service listing forproducers to advertise andsource feed products. It isavailable atwww.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/FeedForageListing.

Rainfall this past weekranged from trace amountsto nearly two inches in west-central areas. However, pre-cipitation was spotty andmost areas received either norain or just light showers av-eraging a third of an inch.As a result, topsoil remainsdry. Provincially, topsoilmoisture conditions oncropland are rated as 33 percent adequate, 45 per centshort and 22 per cent veryshort. Hay land and pasturetopsoil moisture is rated as23 per cent adequate, 41 percent short and 36 per centvery short.

Crops are developing wellin most of the province, al-though many crops in drierareas are short, thin and head-ing out and/or flowering ear-lier than normal. Sixty-sevenper cent of the fall cereals and39 per cent spring cereals arein the heading stage, with anadditional 31 per cent of thefall cereals in the dough stage.Forty-five per cent of flax, 55per cent of canola and mus-tard, and 82 per cent of pulsecrops are in the flower toboll/pod stage.

Crop conditions varythroughout the province withthe majority of crops in poorto good condition. Grasshop-pers and lack of moisture re-main significant causes of re-ported crop damage.

Reg Welsh, a patroller for the Sask 1st Call program, wasin Weyburn on July 6, inspecting and ensuring local con-struction sites and residential build sites are undergoing safedigging practices. The Sask 1st Call program began in 2014as a service for anyone planning to dig or excavate. Theservice provides underground facility screening and notifi-cation for safe excavation. The mobile unit makes both un-announced and appointment booked stops at commercialand residential sites.

"Our goal is to get everyone to call Sask 1st Call beforebreaking ground and encourage safe digging practices whichwill help prevent damage to underground facilities.In turnthat helps prevent costly repairs, damage to equipment andsurrounding areas, and most importantly prevents personalinjury or loss of life states Welsh.

Welsh is just one of the patrollers in the Sask 1st Callprogram that will be driving around this summer in areasincluding but not limited to Weyburn, Estevan, Regina,Moose Jaw, Melville, Balgonie, White City, Assiniboia andGravelborg.

Forward? What'sthe right direction?

My dear friend, Susan, his-torian and author, sparkedmy thoughts about thesequestions while reading thelatest contribution to herblog, "My year of living back-wards". If it wasn't for the fact

Saskatchewan. To be completely honest, I was a little wor-ried before they even got here. What were two teenage boys,who have travelled all over the world, going to find inSaskatchewan to keep them entertained? Yet, as they headedhome, back to the city, it was clear Saskatchewan had a fewsurprises up its' sleeve that left them saying "We can't wait tocome back."

Here are a few great things that should be included in theTourism Saskatchewan brochure.

A vacation in Saskatchewan

Unless the forecast prove right later this week, this seems like a page taken from the writingsof 1 Kings 17 - 19 from the experience of the prophet Elijah who lived the three year droughtin Israel during the reign of King Ahab whose wife Jezebel seem to hold power and deter-mined what happened in the land. While some might be impacted by breathing difficultiesand issues because of the smoke making their way to southern Saskatchewan, it must bequite another matter to be caught with having to evacuate from your home and communitybecause the fires are getting too close and too dangerous to remain there. It must befrustrating and disappointing to witness the potential loss of everything one has worked tobuild up over the years and to face the prospect of starting over.

Even the faith response of trusting in God in the face of this situation must be very testingand trying for those families and persons, because there must be a sinking sense of thisdifficulty being overwhelming. This situation is made more acute when we realize that thesefires in northern Saskatchewan are not restricted to our provincial boundaries but also trueof our western provinces. Whenever we hear of disasters affecting people living in other partsof the world, we generally mobilize our resources to help them to rebuild their lives. I am nowwondering if the time has not come for us to start a similar fundraising effort to help ournorthern neighbors with the task of rebuilding their infrastructures and homes when thetime comes. Certainly commendable are those helping with fire-fighting and with accommo-dating those who have been displaced and evacuated from their homes and communities,but much more will be needed in the weeks ahead.

In the meantime, we pray for much needed rain to help put those fires out or at least toslow down their advancement into wider areas, but also to help our crops come to greatermaturity and yield for our farming families. Our inability to affect or control our weatherhelps to realize just how dependent upon God we are in this situation and many others; yetwe try to go it alone until the situation is almost desperate before we engage in some seriousprayers. When we pray, we acknowledge just how much we need God and that we shouldturn to Him more often and more readily every day of our lives. We pray that God maybring those fires under control and put them out, so that stability might return to northernSaskatchewan.

Mid-July Reflections:Haze, Smoke and No Rain

that I know her to be one ofthe most talented, creativepeople I know, I might havequestioned her choice ofwords.

Living backwards. Isn't thatwhat we're not supposed todo? Doesn't present, let alonefuture success, hinge on mov-ing forward in spite of thepast? As I've mused on thetopic several seemingly con-tradictory Scripture passagescome to mind. In the first,Philippians 3:13, the ApostlePaul talks about forgettingthe former things so that ourpast doesn't hinder experienc-ing all that God has for useach coming day. Forget thethings that hinder ourprogress!

In contrast, a number ofother passages written by the

same man, exhort us to re-member God's grace towardus, to recall the need for re-spectfulness, to refrain fromnastiness and to avoid evil.

On the other hand,Susan's right: looking back onlife has got to be one of thebest ways to ensure that weare moving forward. I can'tthink of a better spiritual GPSsystem than to remember thetimes we've been spared theresults of our own foolishnessand to recall God's goodnessto us even when we've beenless than gracious to someoneelse.

Thought for the week

(Well, there's nothing quite like watching a Rider fan in action.) Whether it be a watermelonon their head or hair painted green, a Rider fan is second to none when it comes to passionfor the game.

2. Land of the Living Skies: It's something that a lot of us take for granted. In big citieswhere the sky scrapers are side by side, people don't get to see the beautiful sunsets andsunrises. In Saskatche-wan, we can see our dog run away from home for days but we also getto see the ever-changing and beautiful landscapes in the sky.

3. Food: Two words, perogies and cabbage rolls. You can hit any Five Star restaurant andit will still not compare to grandma's (or baba's) homemade, home-cooked, perogies andcabbage rolls.

4. A Farmer's Field: I think that this time of year is one of the most beautiful inSaskatchewan. Fields of flax and canola are blooming everywhere you look. Imagine com-ing from the city where the biggest crop you have ever seen is your mom's garden and nowyou are surrounded on both sides of the road with gorgeous crops of canola.

5. Lack of WiFi: Now at first, this may not sound like a bonus of being on vacation.Having no service at the farm means no Instagram posts or Snapchat stories. Yet, there issomething to be said about enjoying the moment, rather than worrying about posting it.

6. Freedom: There may be only five streets to walk down in this town but all of them aresafe. Kids are free to bike around town for hours. In fact, you don't even have to worryabout where they are because on a quiet night in town, you can hear exactly where they are.

7. Life is a Highway: No more traffic jams. The only things you need to worry about onour highways are a family of ducks, a fox or a deer crossing the road.

So it seems Saskatchewan surprised the city folk. It's a great vacation destination spotafter all.

Weyburn General Hospital Palliative Care room receives makeoverThe Palliative Care room at the Weyburn General Hospital has re-

ceived a makeover.Upon touring one of the palliative care rooms, the Weyburn Cancer

Survivor Support Group for Women decided that they would committo redoing one of the rooms.

The Weyburn Cancer Survivor Support Group for Women (Shar-ing the Journey) current facilitators are Sharon Werstuik, Linda Unrau,Tanis VanDeSype, Tammie Morrison and Vickie Betker. Meetings areevery second Wednesday of the month at the Weyburn Public Library.

Women are encouraged to come share and receive support for theirJourney as cancer survivors. email : [email protected]

“The rooms at the Weyburn General Hospital have not been up-dated for quite some time and although the community looks forwardto having a new hospital in the future, in the meantime, many patientswill travel through our existing hospital. Our group decided to coordi-nate and donate the refinishing of one of the palliative care rooms”,said Werstuik. “Our group partnered with Simple with a Twist to achievethe makeover.”

Local photographer, Tina Hudson, donated two beautiful photo-graphs of local landscapes to adorn the walls and Weyburn CanadianTire, Microtel Hotel, Dempsey Laird Trucking Ltd., Weyburn PublicLibrary (Dress Down for Charity) generously donated many of theaccessories with the remainder of the items purchased by the WeyburnCancer Survivor Support Group for Women. Simple with a Twistchose the color palette, shopped and installed the items.

“We felt it was important for the patients and their families to have anicer environment to be in, at a sacred time of closure. We hope ourintension to bring comfort is felt by those that spend time in this room”,stated Heather van der Breggen of Simple with a Twist.

winless team in the CFL following Friday night's 35-32 over-time loss at the B.C. Lions. The Riders are 0-3 and fallingbehind the pack.

The last time the Roughriders were 0-3, Stephen Harperwas the Prime Minister of Canada and Barack Obama wasPresident of the United States!

What's that you say? Oh, so it hasn't been that long.It was 2011 in fact, when the Greg Marshall-led

Roughriders stumbled to a 1-7 mark leading to Ken Millertaking over the coaching reins just prior to Labour Day. Theclub would finish 5-13.

The 2011 season was considered to be a blip on the screen.A misnomer. As it turned out, the hierarchy was right be-cause Corey Chamblin was brought in as head coach in2012 and the club has pretty much improved every year since.

Until now. Time will tell whether this rocky start in 2015is just another blip, or the start of a monumental franchiseslide. Hey, the good times can't last forever.

And Chamblin is getting tarred and feathered by a goodchunk of the fickle Rider Nation these days, as he's become theface of the organization. He's made so many moves with playersand coaches that it's crystal clear the buck stops with him.

In 2013 he got the Grey Cup, the Coach of the YearAward and a fat, long, new contract.

Now, he's facing the firing squad. Although any sugges-tion his job is on the line is ludicrous.

But it seems like this year is moving so fast, it's like a blur.I'm sure the Riders would love to throw a challenge flag onthe season just to have a moment to collect their thoughts.But they can't.

What am I talking about? Well here's how they got here:Saskatchewan has held fourth quarter leads in all three of

its games only to watch them dwindle into losses each gut-wrenching time.

Friday's extra-time loss at B.C. Lions was utterly flabber-gasting and very likely left an emotional wound.Saskatchewan had an 11-point lead with 2:15 to go! Just playsome defense and let's get out of here.

Not so fast. The game came down to two 3rd-and-1situa-tions which sealed the Riders' fate. On the first with lessthan a minute to go and the Riders leading 29-26,Saskatchewan turned the ball over on downs at their own48-yard line when quarterback Brett Smith couldn't converton a sneak. The Lions took over and kicked a 56-yard fieldgoal to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The Riders faced the same scenario in overtime at theB.C. 26-yard line and given the fact Chamblin couldn't trusthis offense to convert just moments earlier, he elected tohave Paul McCallum kick a 33-yard field goal. After that, allB.C. had to do was score a touchdown to win. They accom-plished that feat alarmingly easily with a four-yard EmmanualArceneaux touchdown reception to send the 23,062 in at-tendance into a frenzy.

The Riders fell to 0-3 and were appropriately shocked,stunned and bewildered. I'm told you could hear a pin dropin the locker room for quite a period of time afterwards.

Who's to blame? The players backed - but failed to execute- the first third down gamble.

Aggressive playcalls show confidence in your team. Bettertackling would've cinched these victories in all three games,long before it came down to the final minutes or seconds.

You can scratch your head and point as many fingers asyou'd like but all roads eventually lead back to Chamblin.

Now it's up to the head coach to keep this locomotive onthe tracks before they fall any further behind and theirblossoming confidence is obliterated.

"We gotta find a way. Everybody else is," Chamblin fumedon CKRM's postgame show. "Clean football is what wehave to play. Whether we call a three-, four-, or five-manrush, we just have to find a way to get off the field."

The loss wasted a superb outing for star Rider receiverWeston Dressler (9 catches for 122 yards and two touch-downs), who says they need to reach rock bottom soon be-fore they can start climbing again.

"I think the biggest thing right now for us is recognizingthe pain," Dressler said in a silent locker room after thegame. "It should hurt. We should have guys in the lockerroom that care about winning football games. I'd be worriedif guys weren't quiet in there and weren't hurting."

So again the Roughriders will try for their first win thisFriday when they host those same B.C. Lions at MosaicStadium (8:00 pm, TSN, CKRM) in Week 4.

Trudy Morken and her dog, Rocky,were two attendees at the Bark in thePark event held at Tom Laing Park onJuly 12. Melanie Adderley, the ownerof the Weyburn Pet Valu, organized theevent in conjunction with the WeyburnBeavers baseball team. Both the PrairieSky Dog Rescue and the Weyburn Hu-mane Society sent representatives tothe event, which helped raised aware-ness and funds for both non-profit or-ganizations. Fans were encouraged tobring along their pets for the afternoonand watch the Beavers baseball doubleheader. The Weyburn Pet Valu storehas been busy with events includingtheir fundraising efforts to aid animalswhich have been displaced due to theSaskatchewan wildfires. So far, theyhave donated 1,162 pounds of dogfood, 180 pounds of cat litter and 165pounds of cat food, along with numer-ous items including treats, collars,leashes and harnesses.
