    CIVILISATION

    LES LOISIRS

For the French, hobbies and leisure activities are very important. To them, hobbies are not only a reward, but also a right as well. That is why every Frenchhas about 3.35 hours of free time each day, which represents 25 % of his/herlifetime! In every family, 23 % of the household income is spent on leisureactivities, equivalent to the money spent on accommodation. It is true that theFrench have a lot of free time: they have to work a maximum of 35 hours perweek and the French students are the luckiest in Europe, with 17 weeks ofholidays per year!

The first and the simplest activity enjoyed by the French is la tlvision. Theylove to watch it an average of 3.15 hours per day per person. The French like towatch game shows and movies, but they also enjoy the News and culturalprogrammes such as documentaries and political debates. The public channelsare France 2, France 3, Arte (the franco-german cultural channel), la 5 and TV5

(worldwide francophone channel). The main private channels are TF1, M6 andCanal +, but about 130 channels are accessible with the Cable TV!

Another very important hobby is la musique. The French love to listen to alltypes of music and songs: rap, rock, pop, funk, jazz, classical, traditional, ethnicmusic, etc. They buy a lot of CDs and listen to them alone or with friends, butthey also enjoy attending live concerts and dancing in les discothques. Thereis even a special day to celebrate music! Its la fte de lamusique, held on 21June, every year. This date is important because it is the beginning of summer. From 6 p.m. on this day, in all villages, towns and cities in France, free concertsare given in the streets and all kinds of music can be enjoyed. You can dance all

night long from one end of the town to the other. On top of that, a quarter of theFrench play a musical instrument. Every town with more than 5000 inhabitantshas its own orchestra.

Le sportis also very present in the life of the French since 68% of the populationpractise a sport regularly or occasionally and 14 million people belong to a sportsclub. The most popular sports are: trekking/hiking, football, tennis, ptanqueand judo. However, a few sports are getting more and more trendy these days:

cycling, badminton, horse riding and golf. Most of the French do not practise asport for competition but just to enjoy themselves or to keep fit.

Other popular leisure activities include le cinma, invented by the French in1895, visiting the numerous muses et monuments, (castles, cathedrals, etc.)and le thtre. Some French people also like to stay at home to read (novels, magazines, newspapers, etc.), garden, potter about (bricoler) and even try outnew recipes!

    LA FAMILLE FRANAISE

Marriage is still a highly-valued institution in France. 81% of the French consider the family to be an essentialingredient to happiness, while 87 % are ready to risktheir lives to defend their families. However, it isbecoming increasingly fragile. An average of one out ofthree marriages ends in divorce (1 in 2 in Paris).10% of children are raised by a single parent (in mostcases by their mother), 85% of children of divorcees have a stepfather / motherand 60 % of these have stepbrothers / sisters.

Children of divorcees encounter many difficulties. The absence of one parent, therefusal to accept a stepparent or sibling causes approximately 150 000 children to

run away from home each year.

In 1999, 15 % of the French population was cohabitating (vivre en union libre).Such arrangements, in which couples stay together without getting married, arebecoming increasingly common. This is especially so among young people whomay use it as a trial marriage or as a new model for life as a couple.

Large families are becoming a thing of the past in France, with only 5% offamilies having four or more children. Most couples prefer to keep their familiessmall with usually two children, mostly for economic reasons. They want to devote more time, energy and money to their

children so as to give them a head start in life.

The relationship between the parents and the childrenremains healthy. Children are speaking to their parents morethan to their teachers. They are also staying longer with theirparents.

LES ARTICLES INDFINIS ET DFINIS AU PLURIEL

Remember that in the second lesson (cf. page 5), weve learnt the followingstructure of singular nouns:

    Definite articles LE LA L

    Indefinite articles UN UNE -

In this lesson, we focus on the plural nouns. Plural nouns require plural articles.

    DEFINITE ARTICLE INDEFINITE ARTICLE

    Masculine les professeurs desprofesseurs

    Feminine lestables destables

    1. The plural form of the definite article is always les. The plural form ofthe indefinite article is des*, although it is often omitted in English, the indefinite article must be usedin French.

Les plural of le , la

    Des plural of un, une

    * after il ny a pas, desbecomes de

    Examples :

le livre = leslivresun tudiant = des tudiants

    2. French nouns generallyform their plural by adding s:

    Leprofesseur lesprofesseursLuniversit lesuniversits

    3. If a word already ends in s, -x, -z, the plural is the same as thesingular.

    Lecours Lescours

    Lavoix Lesvoix
